A mid-Permian mafic intrusion into wet marine sediments of the lower Shoalhaven Group and its significance in the volcanic history of the southern Sydney Basin

A mid-Permian (late Kungurian) micro-dolerite dyke/sill complex located at Kinghorn Point intruded into the then unconsolidated upper Wandrawandian Siltstone of the lower Shoalhaven Group, southeastern Sydney Basin. The dark grey siltstone was deposited in the deeper part of a coastal seaway characterised by northward-directed paleocurrents, with a Cruziana ichnofacies, crinoid stem fossils and abundant glendonites indicating a cold climate. Thin periodic storm deposits, or tempestites, of fine-grained sandstone of volcanogenic origin are scattered through the siltstone. These paler sandy beds were probably derived from island volcanoes to the south or southeast, indicating that regional volcanism was pervasive during this glacial episode. Evidence for penecontemporaneous igneous emplacement into mid-Permian wet unconsolidated shallow marine sediments includes: destruction of primary sedimentary structures caused by extensive interaction and intermingling between the sedimentary and igneous materials, the presence of brecciated contacts and peperite, angular and rounded dolerite fragments in the siltstone, fluidisation and entrainment of the sediments into cooling and flow fractures in the magma, and the presence of tube-like flow features. There are also hyaloclastite and baked sediments along the contact margins, fumaroles and vesicles within both the sediment and magma. High vesiculation is characteristic of intrusion near the surface, and possibly extrusion at the sediment–water interface. The geochemistry of the intrusion, especially key element ratios of the high-field-strength, major and trace elements, is very different from that of the shoshonites of the nearby Permian (mid Wordian to Capitanian) Gerringong Volcanics, having much lower Zr/TiO2, Nb/Y, Nb/Zr, K2O, P2O5, Rb, Th, U, Y, Zr and Nb, and higher MgO, suggesting they are unrelated. This indicates that the Kinghorn Point intrusion was associated with an earlier intermediate pre-Gerringong Volcanics phase, or it may be distinctive and unrelated. Magmatic geochemical comparisons further afield along the northern Sydney Basin and Tamworth Fold Belt boundary coasts show that volcanism was pervasive during the Wandrawandian glacial episode and that regional mid-Permian mafic volcanism was well evolved in the southern Sydney Basin during sedimentation. KEY POINTS A mid-Permian syndepositional dolerite intrusion at Kinghorn Point shows classical peperite and soft-sediment deformation features. Previously unreported mafic tuffaceous sandstone beds within the Wandrawandian Siltstone were probably derived from island volcanoes to the south or southeast. Geochemistry of the intrusion shows that it is not related to the mid Wordian to Capitanian Gerringong Volcanics. Regional volcanism was pervasive during the Wandrawandian glacial episode along the southeast Panthalassan margin of Gondwana.

Ichnology and Sedimentology of the Lower Cretaceous Wabiskaw Member (Clearwater Formation) Alberta, Canada

Identifying facies and paleoenvironmental interpretation of the rock record is complicated due to the interplay of independent variables (i.e. wave-, river- and tidal-input) in marginal- and shallow-marine environments. This study integrates sedimentology and ichnology to characterize the depositional environments of the Lower Cretaceous Wabiskaw Member. The deltaic and strand plain shoreface-offshore deposits of Wabiskaw Member of Clearwater Formation of northeast Alberta provide an excellent case study to evaluate the ichnological and sedimentological characteristics associated with laterally and vertically variable stresses in wave-influenced nearshore settings. The Wabiskaw Member is studied using four sedimentary facies associations (Ten sedimentary facies). Facies association 1(FA-1) consists of massive, sharp-based mudstones and lenticular sandstone with small-scale soft-sediment deformation features, syneresis cracks and small-scale oscillation ripples. The ichnological suite mainly includes small grazing and deposit-feeding traces, representing the Phycosiphon Ichnofacies. Facies association 1(FA-1) is interpreted to record deposition in a prodeltaic setting. Facies association 2 (FA-2) is fine-to-medium-grained sandstone and thin mudstone with current, oscillation and combined flow ripples. The low angle and trough cross-beds, soft-sediment deformation structure, mud chips and coal debris are common. The trace fossil suite includes sporadically distributed deposit-feeding traces belonging to the Rosselia Ichnofacies. This facies association is interpreted to be deposited in the delta front to a mouth bar setting. Facies association 3 (FA-3) is gray to bluish-gray mudstone with minor sandstone interbeds (massive, planar parallel to hummocky cross-stratified). FA-3 is moderate to highly bioturbated. The ichnodiversity and abundance is high with dominant horizontal and subordinate vertical traces, including the dominance of deposit and detritus feeding traces representing the archetypal Cruziana Ichnofacies ichnological suite. Facies association 3 (FA-3) is interpreted as being deposited in a storm-influenced offshore environment. Facies association 4 (FA-4) is upper fine to fine-grained glauconitic sandstone with minor mudstone interbeds at the base. Physical sedimentary structures including massive and planar (horizontal and low angle), hummocky, and swaley crossing-stratification. FA-4 is heavily burrowed with a diverse suite of horizontal and vertical traces of deposit and detritus-feeding structures, representing a proximal expression of Cruziana Ichnofacies. Facies association 4 (FA-4) represents distal lower to middle shoreface deposition. The Wabiskaw Member deltaic (prodelta-delta front) deposits, producing characteristic sedimentological-ichnological signatures, distinguishing these deposits from related strand plains. In addition to characteristic deltaic traits (e.g. soft-sediment deformation structures, fluid mud and syneresis cracks), these deposits commonly contain comparably stressed low-diversity and diminutive trace-fossil suites. On the other hand, fully marine strand plain shoreface-offshore complexes are characterized by comparably robust trace fossils with high ichno-diversity and bioturbation intensities.

Soft sediment deformation features in Dauki Fault region: evidence of paleoearthquakes, Shillong Plateau, NE India

The northeastern region (NER) of India has several complex regional geological structures, out of which the Dauki fault (DF) is a prominent one. The E–W trending reverse DF, which is inferred to go through the southern margin of Shillong Plateau (SP), has played major role in the regional deformation of the adjoining areas and was believed to be active during the Late Quaternary time. Previous paleoseismological studies conducted on the eastern and western part of the DF, Bangladesh, revealed that the fault ruptured in AD 849–920 and AD 1548, respectively. However, there were no studies on the DF from southern side of the SP, India. For the first time, from Indian side, soft sediment deformation structures (SSDS) are reported from five trenches in and around the DF zone, SP. Close to the Dauki village, five trenches in the eastern part of the DF, SP, show micro faulting, sand dykes, disturbed strata, and water escape structures. The detailed investigation of SSDS indicates that the origin of deformation is seismic trigger. The 14C AMS dating of deformation structures generated by earthquakes suggests three seismic events occurred between 130 and 920 year BP, 5415 to 9140 year BP, and at about 4285 year BP. This study confirms that DF is indeed active, at least, since the mid-Holocene. More trenching and dating of seismically induced deformation features are needed to accurately calculate the recurrence interval of significant earthquakes that can strike the fast-expanding urban areas in India and Bangladesh.

The Liquefaction Record of Past Earthquakes in the Central Virginia Seismic Zone, Eastern United States

Abstract Following the 2011 moment magnitude, M 5.7 Mineral, Virginia, earthquake, we conducted a search for paleoliquefaction features and found 41 sand dikes, sand sills, and soft-sediment deformation features at 24 sites exposed in cutbanks along several rivers: (1) the South Anna River, where paleoliquefaction features were found in the epicentral area of the Mineral earthquake and farther downstream to the southeast; (2) the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers east of the Fall Line, where liquefiable sediments are more common than in the epicentral area; and (3) the James River and Rivanna River–Stigger Creek, where a few sand dikes were found in the 1990s. Liquefaction features are grouped into two age categories based on dating of host sediment in which they occur and weathering characteristics of the features. A younger generation of features that formed during the past 350 yr are small, few in number, and appear to be limited to the James and Pamunkey Rivers. Though there are large uncertainties in their locations and magnitudes, one or more preinstrumental earthquakes, including the 1758, 1774, and 1875 events, likely caused these features. An older generation of liquefaction features that formed between 350 and 2800 yr ago are larger, more numerous, and more broadly distributed than the younger generation of features. Several earthquakes could account for the regional distribution of paleoliquefaction features, including one event of M 6.25–6.5 near Holly Grove, or two events of M 6.0 near Mineral and M 6.25 near Ashland. Amplification of ground motions in Coastal Plain sediment might have contributed to liquefaction along the Mattaponi and Pamunkey Rivers.

Polygenetic mélange in the retrowedge foredeep of an active arc-continent collision, Coastal Range of eastern Taiwan

The Plio-Pleistocene Lichi Mélange in the Coastal Range of eastern Taiwan offers an excellent opportunity to study processes of mélange development at the continent-ocean interface of an active arc-continent collision. This paper presents new results of detailed geologic mapping, lithofacies analysis, magneto-biostratigraphy, paleocurrent, and paleoslope analyses in the southern Coastal Range to investigate the origins and significance of this mélange. The results show that the Lichi Mélange consists of mass-transport deposits including well-stratified block-in-matrix beds (olistostromes), extra-formational blocks (olistoliths), and broken formation with abundant soft-sediment deformation features that transition laterally into distal mega-slump beds and pebbly mudstones (subaqueous debrites). Abundant observations of depositional contacts and interbedding of mélange with contemporary (ca. 4–1 Ma) flysch units of the Fanshuliao and Paliwan formations confirm their sedimentary origin. Compacted sedimentological shear fabrics in olistostromal facies are broadly parallel to internal stratification and bedding, and are readily distinguishable from cross-cutting brittle fault zones related to post ~1 Ma west-vergent thrust faults. Paleoslope and paleocurrent analyses record down-slope gravity-driven transport toward the east and southeast.The data provide evidence for a polygenetic origin of the Lichi Mélange, in which sedimentary mass-wasting deposits are overprinted by younger tectonic shear zones. Slide blocks, conglomerate clasts, and detrital sand were all derived from an eroding source in the east-vergent eastern retrowedge of the Taiwan collisional orogen. The source area included tectonically accreted fragments of the two converging plates that represent shallow-crustal equivalents of the Miocene Yuli Belt and Eastern Slates exposed in the modern Central Range. Reconstructed stratigraphic panels record eastward progradation of olistostromal facies over distal basinal flysch deposits, which we infer resulted from eastward (oceanward) migration of a steep submarine slope at the leading edge of the retrowedge orogenic front. Thus, the Coastal Range basin evolved as a migrating retro-foredeep basin that formed on top of older, pre-collisional volcanic arc and forearc crust. These results demonstrate a unique type of sedimentary basin that is formed and then rapidly inverted at a convergent continent-ocean interface during the transition from intra-oceanic subduction to arc-continent collision. This revised history of the Lichi Mélange provides a new perspective on the dynamics of rapid crustal mixing and tectonic recycling at the convergent suture of an active arc-continent collision system.

Hierarchical scales of soft-sediment deformation in erg deposits, Lower Jurassic Navajo Sandstone, Moab area, Utah, U.S.A.

ABSTRACTExtensive soft-sediment deformation (SSD) of multiple expressions and scales record active and dynamic events and processes in erg deposits of the Lower Jurassic Navajo Sandstone near Moab, Utah. The erg deposits preserve depositional environments of eolian dune, interdune, fluvial, playa, lake, and spring. A large range of SSD features, from intact beds showing little deformation to pervasively disturbed beds, exist in many of these deposits. A simplified classification index captures the different scales of SSD in ascending order of deformation intensity: 1) mostly intact bedding with small-scale wavy or undulatory deformation structures within single beds; 2) dish and flame structures; 3) meter-scale, kinked, slumped, rolled, overturned, vertical, and detached contorted crossbedding, and associated centimeter- to meter-scale pipes; and 4) disruptive diapirs and laterally extensive massive sandstone. The SSD features of deformed crossbed sets, diapirs, and massive sandstone beds, are consistently juxtaposed, and are thus genetically linked.Although the Navajo Sandstone has been considered a classic example of an extensive dry eolian system, both individual and combinations of strata bounded SSD features exemplify dynamic deformation, liquefaction, and fluidization that took place at various times after deposition. The lowest degree of deformation, SSD 1, is largely attributed to autogenic––inherent to the eolian system––or local allogenic processes. Larger degrees of deformation, SSD 2–4, were more likely produced by allogenic, external-forcing processes from regional changes in climate and/or near-surface groundwater conditions originating from the Uncompahgre uplift, with the deformation triggered by some event(s). Possible significant ground motion could have led to large-scale disruption in the Navajo sand sea across kilometer-scale intervals. The Navajo example establishes valuable hierarchical relationships of processes and products for recognizing and interpreting SSD in other ancient and modern eolian systems. This has particular relevance to sedimentary discoveries on Mars, where SSD features are visible from remote sensing imagery and rover exploration.

Sedimentary features influencing the occurrence and spatial variability of seismites (late Messinian, Gargano Promontory, southern Italy)

Seventeen layers characterized by soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDS) were identified within the “calcari di Fiumicello”, an upper Messinian (Miocene) stratigraphic unit (30 m thick), cropping out in the northern sector of the Gargano Promontory (Apulia, southern Italy). Facies analysis was performed on the whole outcrop and detailed sedimentological investigations were carried out on the deformed beds, in order to interpret the deformation mechanism, the driving mechanism and the possible trigger agent. Deformed layers occur in some thin-bedded ooidal limestones, skeletal calcarenite, as well as in some pebble-size conglomerate, alternated with marls, deposited in a protected embayment or barrier-island-lagoon system, possibly characterized by high salinity, and tidal influx. SSDS can be classified as load- and slump/slide structures. The continuous exposures allow us to follow a single deformed layer along tens of meters, hence several types of lateral variations were observed that can be summarised as follows: (1) SSDS disappear within a few meters (with a decreasing pattern of their deformation or in an abrupt way); (2) deformed layers laterally change in thickness and morphology; and (3) a single deformed bed can laterally correspond to two deformed beds. Most of the soft sediment deformation features were identified as liquefaction and/or fluidization features related to seismic shocks (seismites). Seismites are often used as an indicator of seismic events, especially along small outcrops, trench excavation and core analysis. This study highlights the value of the sedimentological analysis for paleoseismic investigations, with the aim of improving criteria for identifying seismites in the sedimentary record, and their suitability as marker of seismic events.

Typical Soft–Sediment Deformation Structures Induced by Freeze/Thaw Cycles: A Case Study of Quaternary Alluvial Deposits in the Northern Qiangtang Basin, Tibetan Plateau

AbstractWith the objective of establishing a distinction between deformation structures caused by freeze/thaw cycles and those resulting from seismic activity, we studied three well–exposed alluvial deposits in a section at Dogai Coring, northern Qiangtang Basin, Tibetan Plateau. Deformation is present in the form of plastic structures (diapirs, folds and clastic dykes), brittle structures (micro–faults) and cryogenic wedges. These soft–sediment deformation features (except the micro–faults) are mainly characterized by meter–scale, non–interlayered, low–speed and low–pressure displacements within soft sediments, most commonly in the form of plastic deformation. Taking into account the geographic setting, lithology and deformation features, we interpret these soft–sediment deformation features as the products of freeze/thaw cycles, rather than of earthquake–induced shock waves, thus reflecting regional temperature changes and fluctuations of hydrothermal conditions in the uppermost sediments. The micro–faults (close to linear hot springs) are ascribed to regional fault activity; however, we were unable to identify the nature of the micro–faults, perhaps due to disturbance by subsequent freeze/thaw cycles. This study may serve as a guide to recognizing the differences between deformation structures attributed to freeze/thaw cycles and seismic processes.

Paleoliquefaction Studies and the Evaluation of Seismic Hazard

Recent and historical studies of earthquake-induced liquefaction, as well as paleoliquefaction studies, demonstrate the potential usefulness of liquefaction data in the assessment of the earthquake potential of seismic sources. Paleoliquefaction studies, along with other paleoseismology studies, supplement historical and instrumental seismicity and provide information about the long-term behavior of earthquake sources. Paleoliquefaction studies focus on soft-sediment deformation features, including sand blows and sand dikes, which result from strong ground shaking. Most paleoliquefaction studies have been conducted in intraplate geologic settings, but a few such studies have been carried out in interplate settings. Paleoliquefaction studies provide information about timing, location, magnitude, and recurrence of large paleoearthquakes, particularly those with moment magnitude, M, greater than 6 during the past 50,000 years. This review paper presents background information on earthquake-induced liquefaction and resulting soft-sediment deformation features that may be preserved in the geologic record, best practices used in paleoliquefaction studies, and application of paleoliquefaction data in earthquake source characterization. The paper concludes with two examples of regional paleoliquefaction studies—in the Charleston seismic zone and the New Madrid seismic zone in the southeastern and central United States, respectively—which contributed to seismic source models used in earthquake hazard assessment.

Carboniferous glaciotectonized sediments in the southernmost Paraná Basin, Brazil: Ice marginal dynamics and paleoclimate indicators

Carboniferous glaciogenic strata (Itararé Gp.) in the southernmost Paraná Basin, Brazil exhibit soft-sediment deformation features previously interpreted as glaciotectonism. These sediments were studied in detail to confirm that they were deformed by ice and to assess the nature of the glaciation, depositional environments, and paleoclimate in this region during the Carboniferous. Five outcrops were described along a railroad transect that contains a conglomerate and diamictite facies with striated and faceted clasts, a medium sandstone facies, a fine grained silt/clay rhythmite and mudstone facies with dropstones and diamictite pellets, a sandy clinoform facies, and a folded sandstone with interbedded mudstone facies. The depositional environment for these sediments is interpreted as an outwash fan and fan delta from an ice-proximal, transitional terrestrial-to-estuarine setting. Rb/K values from the rhythmites reflect a transition from a freshwater to brackish environment and the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) of the rhythmites ranges from 65 to 73, reflecting a relative increase in the degree of chemical weathering through time. Deformation features include widespread folding, thrust faults, hydrofractures, décollement surfaces, and piggyback fold-thrust complexes. The deformation is interpreted as evidence of a push-moraine complex formed by at least two complete ice advance/retreat cycles. The occurrence of décollement surfaces, plastically deformed proglacial sediments, and hydrofractures indicate a dynamic, warm-based or polythermal glacier. Abundant outwash sediments, rhythmites with dropstones, and the shift to average CIA values all support a temperate paleoclimate. Deformation structures indicate a NW direction of ice shove that is in agreement with the regional-scale hypothesis that a NNW flowing lobe extended out of Uruguay during the Carboniferous and terminated in the southernmost Paraná Basin. This study demonstrates that late Paleozoic glaciation in this region was more dynamic than previously understood, with high frequency fluctuations in ice marginal positions.

Clastic pipes and mud volcanism across Mars: Terrestrial analog evidence of past martian groundwater and subsurface fluid mobilization

Clastic pipes are cylindrical injection features that vertically crosscut bedding with sharp contacts. Terrestrial pipes have cylindrical morphologies, massive or radially graded interiors, and raised outer rims. Increased grain size and subsequent cementation along the more porous edges makes the rims more resistant to weathering. Pipes have crosscutting relationships with other pipes due to multiple formation events or migrating eruption centers, and are associated with other soft-sediment deformation features. Terrestrial clastic pipes form via liquefaction and fluidization, which require a near-surface groundwater system to initiate (i.e., sand-sized sediments must be saturated for pipes to form).Clastic pipes (cm to 1000+ m diameters) occur on Mars across multiple time periods and terrains and are recognized in both rover and orbital imagery. A conical or cylindrical geometry and massive interior/core characterize these features. The pipes on Mars show various geomorphic expressions and are classified into five types by the presence or absence of a raised outer rim, or a central pit. These types are interpreted to represent the erosional evolution of pipes at different stages from their initial surface eruptive structures to their weathered remnants (eroded conical hills). Martian pipes formed via fluidization as evidenced by: 1) raised outer rims possibly indicating textural differences along the pipe edges from traction interactions of fluid-suspended sediment; 2) crosscutting relationships with other pipes suggesting reactivated fluidization pathways or migrating eruptive vents; and 3) close spatial association between pipes and other features thought to form by soft-sediment deformation (e.g., contorted bedding). Integration of terrestrial analog data with the Mars observations provides evidence for past Martian groundwater and subsurface fluid mobilization.

Soft-sediment deformation structures related to tectonomagmatic activity: A case study from the borate-bearing lacustrine deposits of early Miocene Bigadiç Basin, NW Turkey

This study documents soft-sediment deformation structures in the lacustrine Bigadiç Basin, one of the early Miocene terrestrial basins in the extensional tectonomagmatic province of northwestern Anatolia. The focus is on the Upper Borate Unit of the basin-fill succession, which consists of sedimentary facies including massive conglomerates, stratified sandstones, siltstones, organic-rich claystones, laminated limestones, organic-rich limestones, marlstones, borates and volcaniclastics. Their deposition, including borates, occurred in a deep lacustrine environment. Possible phases of lake shallowing are represented by stratified sandstones facies. Soft-sediment deformation features include small-scale folds formed by convolution with occasional basal décollement (minor slumps); load casts and related flame structures; fragmented and mixed beds, brecciated by pore-water explusion; shallow- and deep-rooted synsedimentary extensional faults with related neptunian dykes; and large slump sheets of thick bed packages with recumbent folds. These deformation features are interpreted to be of seismo-tectonic and seismo-volcanic origin, related to syndepositional strike-slip faulting and volcanic eruptions. Seismic tremors combined with the basin floor updoming by magma intrusions caused deep-rooted normal faults and intra-basinal slumps tens of metres thick. The study may serve as a guide to similar deformation structures in the underlying part of the Bigadiç lake-fill succession and in the other Neogene basins of northwestern Anatolia – which shared the region's seismo-tectonic, magmatic, palaeogeographic and sedimentation history.

The Coconino Sandstone (Permian, Arizona, USA): Implications for the origin of ancient cross-bedded sandstones

The Permian Coconino Sandstone is one of the most prominent layers of rock in the Grand Canyon and is important to creationists because it has often been used by conventional scientists to discredit the Bible since it is a supposed wind-blown (eolian) deposit. Their argument is that deposits like this would be impossible to form in the midst of a global flood as described in Genesis. Over the past forty years, new data has been collected by us and others that we believe indisputably identifies the Coconino as a subaqueous sandstone--data that will be difficult for our critics to counter. These data include evidence from petrology, fossil footprint studies, sedimentology, regional stratigraphy and soft sediment deformation features. In our studies we found that there are many misconceptions or “urban myths” about the Coconino Sandstone including its grain roundness, grain sorting, grain frosting and angle of cross-bed dips. There are no modern analogs that match the precise sedimentology of the Coconino, but we believe that subaqueous sand waves may be a start in the right direction to understand how the Coconino was deposited. Instead of the Coconino being a problem for creationists, it can be one of our most powerful arguments in support of the biblical account of the Flood. There are many other similar cross-bedded sandstones around the world; the Coconino may be the key to unlocking their origin as well.

Seismically-induced soft-sediment deformation structures associated with the Magallanes–Fagnano Fault System (Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, Argentina)

In this paper, evidence of paleoearthquake-induced soft-sediment deformation structures associated with the Magallanes–Fagnano Fault System in the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, southern Argentina, has been identified. Well-preserved soft-sediment deformation structures were found in a Holocene sequence of the Udaeta pond. These structures were analyzed in terms of their geometrical characteristics, deformation mechanism, driving force system and possible trigger agent. They were also grouped in different morphological types: sand dykes, convolute lamination, load structures and faulted soft-sediment deformation features. Udaeta, a small pond in Argentina Tierra del Fuego, is considered a Quaternary pull-apart basin related to the Magallanes–Fagnano Fault System. The recognition of these seismically-induced features is an essential tool for paleoseismic studies. Since the three main urban centers in the Tierra del Fuego province of Argentina (Ushuaia, Río Grande and Tolhuin) have undergone an explosive growth in recent years, the results of this study will hopefully contribute to future analyses of the seismic risk of the region.

New sedimentary structures in seismites from SW Tanzania: Evaluating gas- vs. water-escape mechanisms of soft-sediment deformation

Seismite horizons are abundant in Cretaceous sandstones of the Rukwa Rift Basin, southwestern Tanzania. Diverse morphologies of soft-sediment deformation are preserved, including two new, unusual sedimentary structures, herein referred to as 1) balloon-shaped inflation structures and 2) surface fractures with linked sandstone splays. This original description of new sedimentary structures contributes to the growing catalogue of seismically induced deformation features. Their unusual morphologies bring to the forefront an important, though seldom touched upon, question of how to differentiate between gas- and water-escape in soft-sediment deformation features. The recognition of the spectrum of soft-sediment deformation structures contained in strata and their deformational mechanisms is important because it permits the differentiation between triggering mechanisms, particularly seismic activity, and can constrain such events spatially and temporally. We interpret the surface fractures and linked sandstone splays to reflect a high gas effusion rate, formed by the release of high-pressure gas followed by a limited expulsion of water. The balloon-shaped inflation structures reflect lower gas effusion rates due to expulsion of lower pressure gas that did not breach the Cretaceous surface seal. When these gas pulses did breach the paleosurface, they formed gas-discharge pits. These seismogenic structures are consistent with deposition of Cretaceous strata in the Rukwa Rift during periods of active carbonatite volcanism, seismicity, and possibly hot spring activity. This documentation serves as an important data point for the re-examination of the classification scheme of soft-sediment deformation structures as primarily water-escape structures to accommodate for the genesis of some secondary sedimentary features by gas-escape.

Giant seismites and megablock uplift in the East African Rift: evidence for Late Pleistocene large magnitude earthquakes.

In lieu of comprehensive instrumental seismic monitoring, short historical records, and limited fault trench investigations for many seismically active areas, the sedimentary record provides important archives of seismicity in the form of preserved horizons of soft-sediment deformation features, termed seismites. Here we report on extensive seismites in the Late Quaternary-Recent (≤ ~ 28,000 years BP) alluvial and lacustrine strata of the Rukwa Rift Basin, a segment of the Western Branch of the East African Rift System. We document examples of the most highly deformed sediments in shallow, subsurface strata close to the regional capital of Mbeya, Tanzania. This includes a remarkable, clastic ‘megablock complex’ that preserves remobilized sediment below vertically displaced blocks of intact strata (megablocks), some in excess of 20 m-wide. Documentation of these seismites expands the database of seismogenic sedimentary structures, and attests to large magnitude, Late Pleistocene-Recent earthquakes along the Western Branch of the East African Rift System. Understanding how seismicity deforms near-surface sediments is critical for predicting and preparing for modern seismic hazards, especially along the East African Rift and other tectonically active, developing regions.

Spatial patterns of deformation and paleoslope estimation within the marginal and central portions of a basin-floor mass-transport deposit, Taranaki Basin, New Zealand

This study describes the character of submarine mass movement and associated deformation as revealed by an exceptionally well-exposed portion of a seismic-scale mass-transport deposit (MTD) within the upper Miocene Mohakatino Formation (Taranaki Basin, New Zealand). The North Awakino MTD is at least 55 m thick and crops out along the northern Taranaki coastline for ∼11 km in wave-cut platforms and in cliffs as much as 100 m high. Spectacular soft-sediment deformation features are developed in remobilized sediment gravity flow deposits that initially accumulated within a low-gradient intraslope basin. Sedimentary facies within the North Awakino MTD comprise laterally extensive, thick- to thin-bedded volcaniclastic sandstone and mudstone. Distinct postdepositional deformation styles are associated with bedding type: folds developed in thick-bedded sandstone are larger (fold heights to tens of meters) and more laterally continuous (to 1 km) than those developed in thinner bedded facies.

Late Pleistocene-Holocene earthquake-induced slumps and soft-sediment deformation structures in the Acequion River valley, Central Precordillera, Argentina

Abstract Evidence of earthquake-induced liquefaction features in the Acequión river valley, central western Argentina, is analysed. Well-preserved soft-sediment deformation structures are present in Late Pleistocene deposits; they include two large slumps and several sand dikes, convolutions, pseudonodules, faults, dish structures and diapirs in the basal part of a shallow-lacustrine succession in the El Acequión River area. The water-saturated state of these sediments favoured deformation. All structures were studied in a natural trench created as a result of erosion by a tributary of the Acequión River, called El Mono Creek. They form part of a large-scale slump system. Two slumps occur in the western portion of the trench and must have moved towards the ENE (70°), where the depocentre of the Boca del Acequión area is situated. Considering the spatial relationship with Quaternary faults, the slumps are interpreted as being due to a seismic event. The thickest dikes in the El Mono Creek trench occur in the eastern portion of the trench, indicating that the responsible earthquake was located to the east of the study area, probably at the Cerro Salinas fault system zone. The slumps, sand dikes and other soft-sediment deformation features are interpreted as having been triggered by earthquakes, thus providing a preliminary palaeoseismic record of the Cerro Salinas fault system and extending the record of moderate-to high-magnitude earthquakes in central western Argentina to the Late Pleistocene.

An example of liquefaction-induced interdune sedimentation from the early Jurassic Navajo Sandstone, USA

Extensive outcrops of Navajo Sandstone in the southwestern United States expose eolian dune deposits that are subdivided in a complex array of foresets and bounding surfaces. In the Glen Canyon region, and other places, this architecture is frequently disrupted by large-scale, soft-sediment deformation features. These features have been attributed to episodic liquefaction events that affected saturated sand below the level of the interdune surface. Though erosional truncation of deformation features indicates that liquefaction often occurred in the uppermost levels of Navajo dune deposits, very few paleotopographic disruptions due to subsurface deformation have been documented.Navajo Sandstone outcrops in West Canyon, Utah, provide unusually comprehensive exposure of architectural details linking large-scale deformation features and associated interdune deposits, enabling a well constrained appraisal of their genesis. At this location, a 23m succession of sandstone, mudstone, carbonate, and chert deposits overlies a zone of deformation that extends, laterally, for hundreds of meters. This horizontally stratified lens occupies an abrupt synform along a bounding surface between successive crossbeds that otherwise appears as a featureless, sub-horizontal plane. Large-scale foresets below this bounding surface oversteepen at the margins of the synform and grade downdip into contorted stratification and structureless expanses.The authors propose that liquefaction in the Jurassic erg caused localized subsidence of a minor portion of a dry interdune surface to a position several meters below the contemporary water table. A succession of hyperpycnal sand flows, lacustrine evaporites, and eolian sheet and dune deposits filled this depression prior to the advance of large dunes across the site. The process/response dynamics evident in this outcrop suggest that deformation may have exercised significant, non-systematic control over depositional architectures in areas of the erg prone to liquefaction. Similar dynamics are unknown from modern desert environments and their intrinsic scale defies laboratory simulation; therefore, close investigation of these ancient features is essential for exploring the full range of depositional controls that may be encountered in other ancient eolianites on Earth and in eolian accumulations on other planets.
