Synthesis of the new sodium pectinate metal complexes with cobalt and nickel ions and their antimicrobial activity

New water-soluble nickel and cobalt complexes-sodium cobalt pectinate (PNaCo) and sodium nickel pectinate (PNaNi)-have been obtained from sodium pectinate with a salt formation extent of 35%, and their physicochemical properties have been studied. Antimicrobial activity of PNaCo and PNaNi against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi has been shown.

Synthesis, properties, and antianemic activity of new metal complexes of sodium pectinate with iron and calcium

A new water-soluble complex based on sodium pectinate with iron and calcium (P-NaFeCa) was synthesized. The regularities of the complexation of sodium pectinate (with a 35% content of COONa groups) with biogenic metals Ca and Fe were studied. The content of macro- and microelements was determined by atomic emission spectrometry; the product was identified by IR spectroscopy. Using atomic force microscopy, it was found that the average particle size of P-NaFeCa is ~170 nm. The efficiency of P-NaFeCa (per os) was studied for the first time in animals with hemolytic anemia modeled by administration of phenylhydrazine. It was experimentally shown that in vivo P-NaCaFe at a dose of 60 mg kg–1 containing 50% of the recommended therapeutic dose of iron helps to recover the number of erythrocytes and mean concentration hemoglobin in erythrocyte, which indicates the efficiency of P-NaCaFe as an agent restoring the blood parameters after exposure to hemolytic poisons.

Shear modulus-concentration relationships for low DE pectin—calcium gels in the temperature range 20–85°C

Gelation of solutions of a DE 35% sodium pectinate (pH 7.4 in 0.2 mol/dm 3 NaCl) by addition of calcium chloride (fixed stoichiometric ratio R = 0.4) was followed by oscillatory mechanical spectroscopy. Shear modulus values ( G′) attained after an appropriately long cure time (and at a particular temperature) were analysed as a function of concentration using a previously described computer approach based on cascade theory. Modulus—concentration data obtained by taking ‘slices’ through gel ‘meltdown’ curves, generated from 20°C gels by steady heating, were also treated in this way. Parameters from the cascade theory, when expressed in terms of temperature, led to estimates for the cross-linking enthalpy and entropy, and to the suggestion that ‘a’, the non-ideal front factor, though close to unity, was a function of the ratio of concentration to critical concentration, i.e. C/C o.

The interaction of polyuronides with calcium ions. 1: binding isotherms of calcium ions with pectic substances

The binding isotherms for Ca 2+ with sodium pectate and sodium pectinate (58% esterification) were constructed. To achieve this, a method of determining free Ca 2+ ions using auxiliary ligand, tetramethylmurexide, was employed. It was demonstrated that the Ca 2+ ion binding to the pectate was cooperative exceeding that expected on the basis of purely coulombic interactions. In contrast, the binding of the ions by the pectinate is close to that predicted for coulombic binding.

Ion complexation of biopolymers: Macromolecular structure and viscoelastic properties of gels

AbstractThe effect of charge density and solvent conditions have been explored on sodium pectinate–calcium system undergoing gelation. Viscosity and shear modulus were determined respectively before and after the transition. More than 55% of sugar residues need to be charged to build a network. The amount of calcium required increases dramatically with the decrease of pH and ionic strength. Pectins in salt–free solutions are rapidly connected by calcium ions but the crosslink density remains lower than in NaCl‐rich solutions. Small angle X‐ray scattering indicates that the junction zones may be viewed as rod‐like cylinders whose cross–section radius increases from 3 to 6 and 8 Å when the ratio R = 2 (Ca2+)/(COO−) changes from 0 to 0.5 and 0.75.

The distribution of free and esterified carboxyl groups within the pectin molecule after the action of pectin esterase from Aspergillus niger and oranges

By reaction of pectin esterase (PE) from Aspergillus niger and oranges as well as lye, with 95% esterified citrus and apple pectin we prepared series of preparations with degrees of esterification between 35 and 77%. In these partial deesterified pectins the form of distribution of the free and esterified carboxyl groups has been determined from the activity coefficient gamma Ca2+ of the calcium counterions in the solutions of the corresponding calcium pectinates, from the electrostatic free enthalpy delta (Gel/N)KCa of the ion exchange Ca2+----2K+ in these systems as well as from the relative activity of the polygalacturonase reacting with sodium pectinate. The PE from A niger hydrolyzes the esterified carboxyl groups more or less randomly, in a manner similar to the effect of lye on pectin. On the other hand PE from oranges brings about block-like groupings of free carboxyl groups in the pectin molecule. The study revealed different reaction mechanisms of the pectin deesterification by pectin esterases from Aspergillus species and higher plants.

Viscosity of Sodium Salt of Polyuronide Hemicellulose from Jute

IT lias been observed by Fuoss and Strauss1 that the viscosity behaviour of a polymer such as polyvinylbutyl pyridonium bromide, containing ionizable groups, in water is not the same as that of a neutral polymer. The reduced viscosity (ηp/C) of the former (a polyelectrolyte), unlike that of a neutral polymer, increases on dilution. A similar behaviour has been noted by Pals and Hermans2 in the case of sodium pectinate. Basu3 has studied the viscosity of sodium thymonucleate, which also behaves as a polyelectrolyte. The present communication describes the viscosity measurements of the sodium salt of methyluronic acid – xylan complex4 (a jute hemicellulose fraction). As this uronic acid is believed to occur in a chain molecule, it was thought that the sodium salt of the complex in aqueous solution might also behave as a polyelectrolyte. This does not appear to have been studied hitherto.

Sodium salts of pectin and of carboxy methyl cellulose in aqueous sodium chloride. II Osmotic pressures

AbstractThe osmotic pressure of solutions of sodium pectinate and three samples of sodium carboxy methyl cellulose in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride were measured in a Fuoss and Mead osmometer. The primary aim was to obtain the molecular weights of the samples. As a by‐product the change of osmotic pressure with polymer concentration and salt content was studied.The reduced osmotic pressure proves to be a linear functon of the polymer concentration. The slopes of the lines p/c versus c vary with the concentration of the sodium chloride in a manner which is in reasonable agreement with the predictions of the Donnan equilibrium. An accurate check is impossible because the activity coefficients are not known.
