John Porter's Sociology: A Theoretical Basis for Canadian Education

Le sociologue canadien le plus souvent cit6 est John Porter de Carleton University, comme 1'est son livre The Vertical Mosaic, lorsqu'on refere a une analyse de la societ canadienne. L'ouvrage contient implicitement une sociologie de l'education portant a la fois sur les rapports ideaux et reels cntre l'education et la societe canadienne. Depuis 1965, Porter a precise ses conceptions sur l'education et la place qu'elle occupe dans le developpement du Canada, mais son oeuvre n'a pas fait l'objet de cette critique approfondie qu'exigent les travaux academiques pour depasser les ebauches de quelque auteur que ce soit. James Heap, Edwin Black et Harvey Rich, parmi d'autres, ont amorce la critique de Porter. Cet article apporte de l'eau au meme moulin en s'attachant specifiquement aux analyses de Porter sur l'education, et conclut que les ecrits de Porter dans ce domaine portent l'empreinte d'un fonctionnalisme elementaire et ne devraient par consequent servir d'assise A la comprehension des rapports entre la soci&et canadienne et l'education.

On Parsimonious Explanations of Production Relations

This paper examines three bodies of macroscopic evidence that are relevant to testing the classical theory of production. No one of these bodies of evidence offers any persuasive support for the classical theory. Fits to data of the Cobb-Douglas and ACMS functions appear to be artifactual, the data actually reflecting the accounting identity between values of inputs and outputs. Similarly, there is little or no support for the U-shaped long-run cost curve, the data on firm size distributions being better explained by the Gibrat hypothesis and constant costs. Finally, observed distributions of executive salaries are explainable in simple sociological terms, without recourse to classical theory.

Mental handicap and the general practitioner

The condition in which a lack of intelligence may interfere with the competence of an individual to care for himself is officially called ‘subnormality’ (‘mental deficiency’ in Scotland), but generally the term ‘mental handicap’ is used. The Mental Health Act of 1959 defines subnormality mainly in terms of the needs for medical treatment and training, and severe subnormality in sociological terms. The clinical and educational assessment is customarily supplemented by the intelligence test, to categorise the mentally handicapped.

Why Belgium?

‘Why belgium?’ is the question that American and Belgian colleagues and friends have asked me recurrently since I began doing research in that society in 1959. Ever since then, Belgium has been one of the consistent sites of my sociological inquiry, reflection and analysis. (Zäire, Belgium's former colony in Central Africa, became another such site, beginning in 1962). With a mixture of real interest, conventional politeness, perplexity and, on the part of Belgians, a tinge of traditional irony, those who have followed my fieldwork have often wondered out loud what I was discovering and learning in that small society that could possibly preoccupy me for so many years. Through some of my publications on the sociology of Belgian medical science and research or, more accurately, on ‘Belgium through the windows of its medical laboratories’, I have implicitly responded to this question (1). And I have periodically speculated on it more privately in my fieldnotes, and in letters to friends. But I have never dealt with it in an explicit, public way. This article constitutes my first formal attempt to do so.
