This study discussed the essence of the psychological conflict the university students who graduated from science gifted high school and the experiences in the process of building their identity and the direction of psychological support for them. The gifted have a heavy burden of achievement. And the prejudice from others makes them lonely. And the discourse of the gifted in our society pushes them into an excessive competitive situation. The gifted are likely to lose their true self and reinforce their false self. Therefore they need the others who can accept them as beings rather than achievements and listen to the inner truth beyond the frame of the gifted. We should also encourage them beyond socio-cultural discourse. When the value of horizontal diversity is prioritized over vertical superiority and inferiority, they will be able to enjoy their own life while giving back the gifts from God.

Writing Depression: Li Lanni’s Nobody in the Wilderness

Nobody in the Wilderness: A Mental Health Record of a Patient with Depression (2008) is the first of a number of memoirs that contemporary Chinese writer Li Lanni (1956- ) has composed to document her fight against the depression that hit her in 2003, after being cured of thyroid cancer. The memoir brings together Li’s diary entries from different moments of her life, excerpts from her (semi-)autobiographical literary production since the 1980s, memories of life during the Cultural Revolution, medical reports, extracts from scientific studies of mental illness, Bible citations, accounts of the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) epidemic, and much more. This stratified narrative, where different genres, discourses, and temporalities intersect, encourages a new reflection on depression, its embodiment, and its meanings. Drawing on literary and medical anthropological understandings of embodiment and illness, this article examines Li Lanni’s articulation of depression to shed light on the potential of writing to destigmatize depression and legitimize her particular embodiment of illness against objectifying biomedical and socio-cultural discourses. The analysis of the narrativization of depression as a “montage” of heterogeneous elements and of the reconfiguration of illness as “hereditary”—at once bound to personal, familial, and collective experiences—illuminates the multiple ways in which the memoir complicates body/mind dichotomies and notions of responsibility in contexts of illness. Ultimately, bearing witness to suffering that transcends Li’s own suffering, the memoir acquires an ethical dimension that rests on the ambiguous relationship between the personal and the collective.

The revenge as a motive for becoming and committing domestic violence

The presented research results provide a theoretical generalization of the phenomenon of revenge, its nature and qualitative characteristics. Taking into account the multifaceted nature of the phenomenon of revenge and the mutual influence of various cultural matrices, the author considered the voiced phenomenon through the prism of domestic violence.The topicality of the topic is due to insufficient scientific development of the motivational function of revenge in the formation and deployment of domestic violence. The purpose of the research involved the formation of theoretical aspects regarding revenge as a socio- legal phenomenon and as a motive for committing domestic violence. In the course of the conducted research, the state of scientific development of the problems of the phenomenon of revenge, forgiveness and domestic violence is highlighted. It has been established that revenge is based on the desire or obligation to punish the offender for an insult, injury, damage, or evil. It is emphasized that revenge is a deliberate, purposeful act, which is produced as a response (reaction) to an insult received, a violation of rights, interests, and is associated with the desire of people to satisfy the need to repay the offender for the insult caused. The author’s vision of revenge is formulated as a deliberate purposeful punishment in the sense of retribution, which is implemented both by legitimate legal institutions and informal methods, methods in an open or closed form: intentional harm for the purpose of revenge, poisoning, intentional beatings, murder, torture, intentional bodily harm and other criminal acts motivated by revenge. It is substantiated that the learned narratives, value orientations, level, degree, form of inflicted pain, evil, opportunity, ability and readiness in combination with the co-dependence of the participants of domestic violence emphasize the multi-vector nature of revenge, which, in turn, allows the researcher to come to a conclusion about the dualistic nature of the voiced phenomenon when formation and perpetration of domestic violence.The conclusions and proposals formulated in the scientific article can be used in: - the scientific research field - for further scientific research in the field of prevention and countermeasures against domestic violence; - the applicable field of law - as recommendations for improving the procedural activity of pre­trial investigation bodies; - the educational process - for the preparation of lectures on the disciplines «Criminal Law», «Criminology», «Legal Psychology», «Preventive Psychology», «Prevention, Counteraction to Domestic Violence». We see the prospect of further investigations in the legal-psychological analysis of the emotional- cognitive, behavioral (conative) components of jealousy and revenge through the prism of the socio-cultural discourse « domestic violence».

Re-visiting copyright: is there a way to tackle selective enforcement and non-contextual algorithmic takedowns? A discussion through the lens of internet meme culture

ABSTRACT Internet memes, a bourgeoning form of communication, resemble accessory elements of language. However, internet memes are conceptually complex. Their collective re-creative process relies heavily on copying underlying works, usually without asking for prior-permission from their rightsholders. Internet memes challenge core copyright assumptions on reasons of re-creation and modes of exploitation. Without a fundamental rethink of this mismatch, internet meme culture may be threatened. Going forward, copyright reforms should be holistic and distinguish between traditional and newer forms of re-creative processes. This article proposes that existing copyright can be flexibly interpreted to limit private property rights of underlying works and meme variations when they are used as internet memes, so as to facilitate their adaptation and support socio-cultural discourse. This article proposes a two-step holistic interpretation: copyright can conceptualise and confer limited rights for underlying works and meme variations when they are copied and re-used as internet memes. Copyright can also conceptualise a narrower scope of property rights by flexibly interpreting a combination of fundamental notions, including joint authorship, fair dealing, idea-expression, or user rights. This holistic approach sits comfortably with user-creators and their blurry cultural production-consumption patterns, alongside their nuanced (non)economic use of internet memes.

Technology: metaphors of "machine" and "mechanism" in the history of philosophical thought

The article is devoted to the study of the concept of "technology" in the history of philosophical thought. The authors have consistently analyzed the psychological, symbolic and socio-cultural factors of influence on the processes of the origin and evolution of technology, which is represented in the history, primarily of classical philosophy, in the form of metaphors of "machine" and "mechanism". This research focus makes it possible to study the interaction of human and technical in a historically and culturally mediated philosophical discourse. In conclusion, a brief overview of the models of representation of technology and the image of a person associated with it as a machine or mechanism dominating in modern information culture is given, epistemological philosophical and natural scientific factors of the functioning of this process are highlighted, and a conclusion is made about the dominant concept of technology as a "supporting structure" of modern culture Using the comparative method, ancient, medieval, and modern concepts of technology, as well as the binary opposition of "man–machine" formed by it, are studied. For the first time, the reconstruction of the concept of technology was carried out through the analysis of socio-cultural discourse in philosophical constructions. The role of these constructions in culture is determined. The authors came to the following conclusions: 1.The genesis of the concept of technology was associated with the understanding of technology as technology, but technology in ancient thought was a broader concept, denoting the totality of artificial human activity represented in technology (specific objects, images) as a means of defining reality. 2.The "supporting structure" of the concept of technology in Western European culture are the metaphors of "machine" and "mechanism", which laid the foundations for understanding man in a post-industrial society. 3.Modern culture can be considered as a technical and technological reality that continues the reconstruction of the metaphor of the "machine" that has developed in the history of philosophical thought.

Historical and cultural dimensions of the philosophy of the future: globalisation and identity

The purpose of the research is to highlight the prospects for the influence of philosophy in the context of the socio-cultural dichotomy associated with the confrontation between the principles of globalisation and identity. The turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries was marked by a focus on the synergistic potential in the worldview paradigm, which corresponded to the meanings of global character. At the same time, the dialectical component of society's development has retained its influence, expressing the desire of a person or community to preserve identity. The purpose of the article is to identify the specifics of philosophical thought within the two dominant dimensions of socio-cultural progress - interaction and confrontation. Achieving a balance between these two tendencies is the key to harmonising the world picture and avoiding destructive manifestations of a socio-cultural nature. The methodological basis of the study is focused on the analysis of philosophical ideas on the historical and cultural status of man, society and civilisation. The analysis of scientific and philosophical works was carried out within the framework of a variation sample, which allowed to use both philosophical and dialectical, as well as synergistic methodological potential. The results of the study point to the levelling of the positions of the philosophical interpretation of globalisation and identity in the socio-cultural discourse. The analysis of 50 philosophical works published over the past five years has demonstrated approximately equal indicators in the cultural and historical characteristics of social activity. This indicates that the worldview paradigm of our time is at the stage of choosing a strategy for civilisational development, considering the two most popular ways of development: globalisation and identity. The research perspectives are focused on the role of philosophical interpretation of the prospects for socio-cultural development. Strategic thinking is an advantage of the philosophical potential in terms of forming a strategy for civilisational progress. Conclusion. Contemporary philosophical discourse is at the stage of determining the dominant strategy for the development of a person, community and humanity. Globalisation and identity reflect the principles of two fundamental worldviews - dialectics and synergy. The role of philosophy involves a thorough description of these two socio-cultural dimensions in order to determine a favourable scenario for the development of society.

Sociocultural discourse of the theory of socialist realism and its reflection in village prose

In the work, in the light of the dominant ideas of modern cultural studies, the issues of reflecting the principles of socialist realist art in the artistic texts of the so-called “village prose”, in particular, in the works of V. Shukshin, are considered. Based on the analysis of the early Shukshin stories, it is shown that, contrary to established ideas, the canons of the theory and practice of the art of socialist realism did not restrict the creative freedom of the bright Soviet novelist, did not conflict with his author's will and creative task. It is demonstrated that Shukshin’s stories of the 1960s and 1970s, unlike the avant-garde trends of underground literature of those years, remained in the general mainstream of socialist realism literature, without opposing it. On the contrary, in the historical situation of the heyday and strengthening of socialism, the rustic writer continued to work in the tradition of realistic literature, on the one hand, inheriting classical foundations, on the other hand, at the creative level expanding the boundaries of ideological, thematic and moral-psychological principles of socialist realism literature.

Franz Kafka and the Problem of Literary Reputation (On the 100th Anniversary of the Writer’s Death)

The article is structured in the form of the author’s reflections on E.G. Etkind’s essay “The Image of Kafka in the Soviet Union” (1980). The theoretical objective of the article is to substantiate the concept of “literary reputation” as applied to a foreign writer. It is proved that the literary and aesthetic discussion of the 1960s about realism and modernism was ideologically colored, and the Soviet reception of Kafka’s modernist work provides an expressive example of the formation of the writer’s reputation under the influence of the socio-political context of the receiving culture. Literary criticism, as well as reader reception, was dominated by the social theme of exposing totalitarian power and the destruction of the individual as its victim, while the metaphysical meaning of Kafka’s mythology of alienation was at best relegated to the background. Kafka’s reputation in the USSR should be seen as a function of one of the competing sociocultural discourses. It was created by the forces of the opposition intelligentsia on the basis of the elimination of metaphysical discourse and its replacement with the liberal-democratic discourse of freedoms, which asserted its dominance in conditions of degradation and decay of Soviet ideology. Today, 100 years after the death of the writer, a new phase of our dialogue with his work begins.

Deciding who we are: A classroom agreement process that cultivates caring relations and dialogic value-orientations

Classroom communities are shared, value-laden, relational time-spaces. One way a classroom community makes explicit and cultivates its values and sought-after ways of interacting is through classroom rules or agreements. What they consist of, and how they are agreed upon, taken up and/or imposed communicates who and what is valued. While some classroom commuities co-author rules, they have typically focused on classroom management and student behaviors. In contrast, we examine the classroom talk of one second-grade classroom community’s process of co-authoring six classroom agreements that focus on valuing self, each other and their classroom. Our sociocultural discourse analysis of whole-class talk provides context for, and explicates ways, this co-­authored classroom agreement process set expectations and obliged commitment to honor these classroom agreements. Findings show ways this process cultivated caring relations and dialogic value-­orientations. This study is significant because it lays out not only the process of agreeing upon and making explicit what matters in a community, but also the values and practices such a process can cultivate.

Дискурсы примирения и проблемы институционализации примирительных процедур по уголовным делам

<p style="text-align: justify;">The global trend of development of new approaches in criminal proceedings, as well as the emerging domestic practice of restorative justice in the last two decades set objective prerequisites for the institutionalisation of conciliation procedures in criminal cases in Russian law. However, attempts to legislate them have not yet been successful. The author considers the clash of socio-cultural discourses as a key factor of resistance to innovation. The article analyses the difference between the understanding of reconciliation in the concept of restorative justice and the dominant legal discourse on reconciliation in criminal cases, and considers the main ideas of the draft laws developed by the initiative working group of the Public Centre for Judicial and Legal Reform in 2020 and 2021. It is shown that interpreting the characteristics of restorative justice in terms of unproblematised legal axioms contradicts the proposed initiatives. The identification of the discursive grounds behind the different positions, against the background of increasing recognition of the role of reconciliation procedures, is a prerequisite for improving the conceptual system that corresponds to the objectives of modern humanistic criminal justice.</p>

Translation Properties of Vulgar and Invective Vocabulary in Political Media Discourse

The present research is an attempt to specify vulgar and invective vocabulary in modern political media discourse and to determine their translation properties (from English into Russian and Armenian, from Russian into English and Armenian, from Armenian into English and Russian) within the frames of pragmatic and socio-cultural discourse analyses. The article aims at indicating the language code differences in terms of cultures. Such analysis fosters also the determination of ways and methods of transmitting discrepancies between positive and negative connotations of various language units and to create the balance of emphatic equivalence when translating from source languages (SLs) into target languages (TLs). Invectives contain universal cultural values, they indicate aggression, anger, hostility and indignity. To translate invective proverbs, aphorisms, jargon, obscenities, the translator uses various transformations to pragmatically adapt them for the target cultural environment, since the source culture cognitive principles do not always coincide with those of the target culture.

Subjectivities of Older Spousal Caregivers in Rural Northern Thailand: A Qualitative Study on Sociocultural Influences

The aging society and changes in living arrangements significantly impact family caregiving patterns, particularly in older spousal caregivers. This study examined how the subjectivities of older spousal caregivers have been shaped by social discourse and practices. A qualitative research approach was adopted in rural northern villages in Thailand. Data collection included 1) narrative interviews with eight older primary spousal caregivers and eight family members and neighbors, 2) in-depth interviews with ten healthcare providers, and 3) participatory observation. Both thematic and inductive methods of data analysis were applied. The finding demonstrated three distinct subjectivities regarding caregivers: older persons, medical, and sociocultural discourse. Medical and older people’s discourses influenced negative subjectivity on older caregivers regarding their physical decline with age; however, positive subjectivity of being a compassionate and capable caregiver was regarded as a valuable role. The findings reflected the changing sociocultural discourse in the northern region of Thailand. A caregiver is perceived as kon jàa, which refers to the committed role of both wife and husband, who care for their spouse for the rest of their lives. The implications of this study can benefit community-based care systems by enhancing the understanding of social and cultural discourse on caring and couplehood and incorporating caregiver needs into the care plan of older people with chronic illnesses.

Probing university teachers’ self-study experiences: insights from a systematic review spanning two decades

ABSTRACT This systematic review examines self-study literature within higher education from 2002 to 2022, aiming to delineate the landscape of this emergent research paradigm by identifying salient research trends, insights, and contributions. Findings reveal a continuum of motivational orientations among researchers, ranging from practice-driven to self-exploratory. Emphasizing a predominant qualitative research orientation, the self-study process centers on exploring researchers’ own practices, learning journeys, and identities within their institutional and socio-cultural contexts. While this review depicts the professional gains of self-studies, including improvements in pedagogy, social and emotional growth, as well as personal and existential reflections, it also identifies challenges such as accommodating diverse perspectives, navigating power dynamics, and managing emotional intensity. Various strategies in the reviewed studies are identified to tackle these challenges, including situating concerns and issues within the larger institutional and socio-cultural discourse, drawing on relevant theories and literature as a conceptual basis, and building upon a democratic and respectful relationship. The review concludes by offering research directions for university teachers interested in conducting self-studies to seek their professional development.

The sociolinguistic navigation of sexual normativities among same-gender-attracted men in contemporary Chengdu, China

In this article, the navigation of normativities by same-gender-attracted, male-identified individuals in Chengdu, China is considered with reference to their linguistic identity work. It foregrounds the relevance of plural normativities, which often arise from intersecting structural forces with diverse cultural roots, to better acknowledge the rich diversity of the broader sexual minority community in China. In turn, it argues that individual performances of sexual identity cannot be accurately accounted for using essentialist notions of culture. Furthermore, it is suggested that a sociocultural discourse analysis approach can provide an important and novel perspective on sexual identity in the region. Taking up this perspective questions and challenges assumptions of a characteristic orientation to normality in ‘Chinese culture’ and complicates oversimplified conceptualisations of normativity.

Beyond the Spotlight: Unveiling the Takarazuka Revue's Complex Legacy of Art, Gender, and Society

The Takarazuka Revue, a distinctive all-female Japanese musical theatre troupe, is renowned not only for its lavish productions and the unique approach of having women perform male roles but also as a subject of extensive socio-cultural discourse. This article meticulously examines the troupe as a microcosm reflecting a broader spectrum of societal issues in Japan, such as deep-rooted gender discrimination, systemic bullying, and the subjugation and objectification of women. The investigation is both critical and detailed, unveiling the darker aspects of the institution, including the oppressive and authoritarian practices within the Takarazuka Music School, the gruelling transformation of women into performers, and the manipulation of art as a medium to perpetuate traditional gender norms and societal expectations. Furthermore, the article delves into the psychological impacts on the individuals involved, scrutinising the long-term effects of power dynamics and stringent training regimes. It artfully argues that the Takarazuka Revue, once a beacon of theatrical innovation and excellence, now stands as a complex symbol of the intertwined relationships between art, gender roles, and societal structures in Japan. The article provides a balanced perspective, acknowledging the artistic value and cultural significance of the Revue while critically analysing its broader societal implications. Through this in-depth analysis, the article aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the Takarazuka Revue and its role in Japanese culture, encouraging a reassessment of the intersection between art and social norms, including gender dynamics.

Российская модернизация в контексте социокультурного дискурса

Solving the problems of modernization of Russia includes not only the transformation of basic economic, social, and political institutions, but also profound changes in the socio-cultural sphere of society, the formation of a value-normative complex adequate to modernity. This section of the modernization theme is the subject of socio-cultural discourse, the analysis of the methodological specifics of which is devoted to this article. The author focuses on the differences between the versions of socio-cultural modernization of Russia in comparison with the concept of "multiple modernity", showing its methodological potential in solving the problems of modernization of non-Western societies.

"I can't escape my scars, even if I do get better": A qualitative exploration of how adolescents talk about their self-harm and self-harm scars during cognitive behavioural therapy for depression.

Emerging evidence indicates that perceptions of self-harm behaviours and self-harm scars may thwart recovery from depression, yet limited research has explored adolescent accounts of their self-harm and scars during therapy. This study sought to explore how adolescents describe their self-harm behaviours and scars during Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and explore the sociocultural discourses that may influence these descriptions. The participants were six female adolescents (aged 14-17years old) with clinical depression, who were engaging in self-harm. All participants accessed CBT as part of clinical trial evaluating three psychological treatments for major depressive disorder in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Audio-taped CBT sessions were analyzed using discourse analysis. Within CBT sessions, adolescents drew upon stigma discourses in talking about their self-harm. Adolescent also described their self-harm scars as shameful and stigmatizing, and as "proof" of the legitimacy of their depression. It is important for CBT practitioners to understand the context of sociocultural discourses around self-harm behaviours and self-harm scars, which are reflected in how adolescents with depression describe these within therapy and may serve to maintain distress. The study indicates that awareness of use of language and intersecting sociocultural discourses can inform CBT practice.

Предрассудок как предмет междисциплинарного исследования

The subject of the study is the phenomenon of prejudice, studied in various specialized discourses and con-texts – linguistic, philosophical and psychological. In this regard, the problem under study can quite reasonably be attributed to the objects of multidisciplinary research. An attempt has been made to consider and rethink the well-known term and the problems behind it in a fairly wide field of view. An additional objective of the study is to justify the need to rethink both the very nature of prejudice and the role it actually plays. In accordance with the aim of the study, a wide range of methods was used, used in specific local areas, but requiring a certain general unifying methodological link, technique or principle. This, according to the author, is the so-called sys-temic or rational eclecticism, used in various fields of humanities. Its use allowed, within certain limits, to com-bine ideas contained in relatively localized scientific fields, as well as to turn to artistic and literary genres of creativity as an illustrative background. The main conclusion of the study was the proposition that the phenom-enon of prejudice contains not only a negative emotional and affective connotation, but can also be used as an effective tool to counter undesirable phenomena in specific cognitive, psychological, sociocultural discourses and areas of behavior. The main result that can be used in solving actual specific cognitive, ideological and behavioral problems is proposed to understand the phenomenon of prejudice, where an unprejudiced attitude should be formed towards the prejudice itself, that is, this would mean actually getting rid of prejudice in the opinion regarding the prejudice itself as a phenomenon.
