Socio-Economic Strategy of Sustainability and Post-Mining Land Use in South Sumatra

This open-pit mining activity has a very helpful environmental potential, soil chemistry, erosion and sedimentation. Change in land use from mining actively after mining requires land and energy closure to ensure that the land is safe for and returned. In accordance with the local spatial pattern in Muara Enim, South Sumatra, the transfer of post-mining land after the dismissal of mining operations will be used as a conservation area managed by the mining community. The concept is an environmental addressing plan to determine the sustainability of various aspects of community life, including local sustainability, food environment, awareness, biodiversity, and sustainability. This study aims to ensure community sustainability after mining operations. The methodology that is an interview with Experts. The results of this research indicate that community empowerment in mining area can use one of the community's natural resource management strategies to ensure social sustainability with land use as agroforestry and integrated agricultural industries.

ВЫЗОВЫ ГЕОПОЛИТИЧЕСКОГО И ГЕОЭКОНОМИЧЕСКОГО ХАРАКТЕРА ЦЕНТРАЛЬНОАЗИАТСКИМ ТЕРРИТОРИЯМ В КОНТЕКСТЕ ИХ УЛЬТРАКОНТИНЕНТАЛЬНОГО ПОЛОЖЕНИЯ

Central Asian territories are too large and diverse to be ignored by the world’s leading actors. Geopolitical and geo-economic interests intersect in this middle space of the Asian part of the world in various ways. The space under consideration has a very large potential for ethnic, resource, political and cultural conflict. Some of them are already underway, but many are still latent and are being held back by external stronger powers. Recently received the independence of the Central Asian countries are faced with a choice of ways of development of their countries. The option proposed by China for the development of TRANS-continental transit routes is very tempting, but carries with it many risks at the same time. Geopolitical and geo-economic problems are analyzed and interests of the main players on the world political map in the considered region are shown. The article substantiates the perspective way of creation of interstate Association on the given ultra-continental space for effective preservation of national sovereignty and culture, integration into the world economy, maintenance of order and security. The importance of the formation of a common socio-economic strategy, taking into account the local characteristics of such a heterogeneous territory, is emphasized. It is impossible to allow excessive competition between the countries of the Central Asian space, otherwise the maximum dividends from the existing advantages of the territories will not be realized and so small opportunities will be scattered. A new innovative way to reconcile the multilateral interests of Central Asia is needed.

MANAGEMENT OF PROFILE FACTORS OF MODERNIZATION OF INDUSTRIAL ENTERPRISES

In the article, using econometric methods to analyze various aspects of identification of relevant factors of modernization of industrial enterprises, determined the most effective relations between them, their ranking is carried out. The paper provides an understanding of the role and place of the accelerated technological modernization of the industry as one of the imperatives of the state socio-economic strategy that currently updates the problem identification forms, mechanisms, strategies to build domestic industrial capacity. Along with this, SMEs require clear mechanisms of organizational-economic providing of the implementation of comprehensive modernization, including taking into account the specifics of the industrial complex and the accumulated socio-economic potential of the region. This predetermines the importance of the formulation of problems of organizational-economic providing of processes of technological modernization of the industry at the regional level. Discusses the changes in the process of modernization: the emergence of the latest procedures and devices of resolving social problems on the basis of improvement of all system of public relations and modification of way of life the emergence of innovative technologies; development of commodity-money relations, the acquisition of the highest level of professional expertise of managers and employees; the modification of social relations. The generalized algorithm effective management of the enterprise in terms of innovation, the tools identify the time lags of development of the enterprise. It is concluded that the identification of the relevant factors provides the possibility of optimizing the process of active management of innovative activity taking into account the stage of development of the enterprise.

Wild-captive interactions and economics drive dynamics of Asian elephants in Laos

The interactions between wild and captive populations of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) persist in most countries of the species distribution, notably through the reproduction between captive females and wild males. However, these complex interactions have been poorly studied, despite their relevance for conservation of this endangered species. Laos has a centuries-long tradition of raising Asian elephants. Besides being cultural icons, captive elephants are inextricably linked to economics through their work in forestry. Using an ecological-economic model, we investigated the effect of socio-economic strategies on fecundity of the Lao population whose dynamics is shaped by human practices. We demonstrated that fecundity is impacted by: i) the dynamics of the wild elephant pool through mating of captive females by wild males, and ii) the financial incentive of elephant owners to breed their animals. As a result, we expect fecundity to rise in response to increases in elephant prices. The captive population will tend towards an asymptotic limit determined by the wild pool growth rate. However, the population will tend to extinction if exports continue. Our ecological-economic approach, by accounting for economic incentives, allows us to predict new equilibria that can serve as a baseline for designing sustainable management strategies for the species.

Ukrainian Scientific Society in intellectual space late nineteenth – early twentieth century

This article examines creation of «Scientific Society named after Taras Shevchenko in Lviv» and «Ukrainian Scientific Society in Kiev». Trends of their activity witch provide joining with global academic community are discoursed. Particular attention is paid to the role of M.Hrushevskyi in establishment of scientific and academic foundations of Ukrainian scientific societies functioning. It is proved that in the XIX century science has become an almost ideological monopoly that shaped not only the natural cosmological segment of people's world outlook, but also an understanding of reality that shaped the socioeconomic and political strategies for its reform or even revolutionary transformation. It is determined that this attitude impressed the Ukrainian national intelligentsia. The conclusions note that the foundations of scientific institutions were perceived by intellectuals of oppressed nations as a means of national-cultural liberation, the positioning of their nation among civilized nations. Convincing object-object orientation of scientific publications of NTU and CNT caused their recognition by the academic world. Imperative observance of academic performance parameters by Ukrainian societies formed their functional equivalents with academies of sciences, contributed to the incorporation of these societies into the world scientific space, establishing dialogue with the culture and science of Europe. The scientific reputation of Ukrainian societies is confirmed by the membership of a number of outstanding foreign scientists in them.

Development and prioritization of socio-economic strategies to elevate public participation in natural resource management using TOPSIS approach; Case Study: Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province (Iran)

Proper implementation of the participatory projects to conserve national natural resources has become much more important over the recent decades. This socio-economic research seeks developing effective strategies to increase public participation in experts' opinions of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province (Iran), in order to achieve sustainable and integrated management of natural resources. In the first step, the literature review led to the identification of 57 social parameters influencing public participation in the province. In the second step, from the parameters identified, with the help of the Delphi technique, 15 parameters were finalized by experts. This led to the formulation of the effective socioeconomic strategies in the study area. The next step was to prioritize these parameters. For this purpose, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was used in Topsis solver software. The study’s statistical population was comprised of the executive experts of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province. The results of the prioritization indicated that the strategy of "the development of alternative livelihoods (A6)" ranks first with normal weight of 0.31, followed by "focus on profitable projects (A2)" with the normal weight of 0.2, and "strengthening social cohesion and trust (A7 )" with the normal weight of 0.12, as the most important strategies to increase public participation. The results of this study can be used by managers and executive decision-makers to protect natural resources and increase feasibility of management activities in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province.Keywords: Strategies effective on public participation, Delphi technique, Executive experts, TOPSIS, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province

The aim of this article is to emphasize that higher education institutions are now attributable to a significant role in creating development processes. Therefore, the records included in the European, Polish and supraregional strategic documents, which directly relate to higher education, have been analysed. In particular, the following documents were analysed: “Europe 2020”; “Concept of National Spatial Development 2030” (CNSD); “Long-term National Development Strategy - Poland 2030. Third Wave of Innovation” (LNDS); “National Development Strategy 2020” (NDS); integrated strategies i.e. “National Strategy of Regional Development 2010-2020: Regions, Cities, Rural Areas” (NSRD), “Strategy for Innovation and Economic Efficiency. Places have long felt a need to differentiate themselves from each other, to assert their individuality in pursuit of various economic, political or socio-psychological objectives. This is especially true of cities, which are increasingly importing the concept and techniques of product branding for use within place marketing. This present paper examines linguistic and socio-economic strategies as they are used in city branding. The City of Magdeburg, capital of Saxony-Anhalt, serves as an example of how different media and different interactive techniques can be coordinated to increase the promotional effect. Since 2010 Magdeburg bears the slogan ‚Ottostadt Magdeburg‘, and therewith refers to its history which is connected to two great men who were both called Otto: Otto the Great, who made the city his capital and from there ruled the Holy Roman Empire, and Otto von Guericke, who revolutionised the sciences in the 17th century by establishing the physics of vacuums. The campaign itself aims to raise the identification of Magdeburg‘s residents with their city as well as to raise national and international awareness in order to attract investors, tourists and students. The aim of the study is twofold: firstly, to find out what makes city branding successful, and secondly, what happens when the residents themselves use the campaign for their own purposes, e.g. by modifying, destructing or reinterpreting slogans.

Socio-economic developmental strategies as retail performance indicators: A balanced scorecard approach

ABSTRACTThis research analyses the commitment to and use of ‘balanced scorecards’ by retailers in generating sustainable profitability, whilst contributing to socio-economic development in South Africa. An international literature review of scorecard frameworks, plans and reports by major retail companies and semi-structured dialogic interviews with a purposive sample of retail business stakeholders and government officials formed the methodology. By contrasting the literature and empirical insights, a summary of findings was generated, which conclude that most retailer scorecards (formal or informal) seek to balance financial with ‘cause-related marketing’ targets, but implementation differs according to factors such as company size, developmental maturity and managerial competence. Furthermore, collaboration between retailers and state institutions in scorecard management is not a reality, as has been achieved in other industries. It is therefore recommended that a Retail Charter scorecard framework be considered, to promote public/private-sector knowledge-sharing and socio-economic development.

Perceived stress among 20-21 year-olds and their future labour market participation \u2013 an eight-year follow-up study

BackgroundLabour market participation among young adults is essential for their future socioeconomic status and health. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between perceived stress among 20–21 year-olds and their labour market participation 8 years later as well as investigate any potential gender differences.MethodsA cohort of 1640 young adults born in 1983 completed a questionnaire in 2004 in which perceived stress was measured. The cohort was followed in a register of social benefits for 12 months in 2011–2012 and was categorized into active and passive labour market participation. Logistic regression was used to analyse the association between perceived stress and future labour market participation, taking into account effects of potential confounders. The analyses were stratified by gender.ResultsThe effects of perceived stress on future labour market participation differed significantly among young women and young men (p = 0.029). For young men, higher levels of perceived stress reduced the risk of future passive labour market participation, when adjusting for socioeconomic factors, self-rated health and copings strategies (p = 0.045). For young women, higher levels of perceived stress increased the risk of future passive labour market participation, when adjusting for the same potential confounding factors, although unlike the men, this association was not statistically significant (p = 0.335).ConclusionThe observed gender difference has important implications from a public health point of view. Healthcare professionals might need to differentiate between the genders in terms of health communication, research and when developing preventive strategies.

Analýza indikátoru udržitelného rozvoje v oblasti klimatických změn z hlediska plnění strategie Evropa 2020

The objective of this paper is to present the results of an analysis of the indicator Greenhouse gas emissions (GGE). The GGE is one of the headline indicators tracked under the EU’s main socioeconomic strategy until the year 2020 - the EUROPE 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. In the area of sustainable growth, the Resource-efficient Europe initiative was established. For 2020, the EU has made a unilateral commitment to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions from its 28 member states by 20 % compared to 1990 levels. The GGE indicator shows total man-made emissions of the so-called Kyoto basket of greenhouse gases. It presents annual total emissions in relation to those observed in 1990. The aggregate greenhouse gas emissions are expressed in units of CO2 equivalent. The development of the GGE indicator in the EU and in the Czech Republic from 2000 to 2014 from the point of view of the ability to achieve the Strategy objectives is analyzed. In terms of the level of the analyzed indicator, the set of the EU countries can be divided into two significantly different groups - the euro area and the non-euro area; or into groups by the year of their joining the EU. Analyses of the dependency between the growth of GGE and the GDP growth for both the set of the 28 EU countries and the Czech Republic are presented as well.

İbn Haldun un Mukaddime sinden Pazar Bölümlendirme Stratejilerine Bakış

The concept of market segmentation strategies was firstly used by Wendell R. Smith (1956) in marketing literature. However, if we look carefully at the work of Ibn Khaldun, it is possible to see these strategies already in his Muqaddimah. Ibn Khaldun discussed these strategies nearly 650 years ago but because he didn’t conceptualize them, his analysis has not been given an adequate attention. The purpose of this study about market segmentation strategies is to present marketing literature and compare it to the Muqaddimah of Ibn Khaldun. For implementing this purpose, in the first section market segmentation strategies which are mentioned in marketing literature are determined and some of them are explained in detail. In the second section statements about market segmentation strategies are included from Muqaddimah of Ibn Khaldun and in the third section a comparison is done followed by a conclusion.In his work Ibn Khaldun argues that the world can be segmented into two main parts, the north and the south. The northern part of the world is further segmented into seven climate areas. He indicates that for example people who live in the first, second, sixth and seventh areas have different requirements as those people from the third, fourth and fifth areas. He argues for the first group “Their houses are from mud and bamboo. They acquire their nutrients, millet and grass. Their clothes are from tree leaves or pelt.” For the second group, he also argues that “People of these areas are richer than the first group because of the climate condition. Their houses are from stone and their clothes, foods are more sufficient than the first group”. These terms show clearly that people who live in different areas have different requirements because of the climate conditions. This situation explains marketing literature as geographic segmentation. At the end of this study a conclusion is made that geographic segmentation, psychographic segmentation, geo-demographic and socio-economic segmentation strategies were already found in the Muqaddimah of Ibn Khaldun.

Reflections on the Arab Uprisings

This chapter offers reflections on the Arab uprisings grouped under four headings: (1) the entrenchment of autocracy in the region, (2) the unravelling of autocracy, (3) the uncertainty of the transition process, and (4) the challenges of sustaining democratic transitions. Among the primary factors underlying the general entrenchment of Arab autocracy, at least prior to the uprisings, are the relative abundance of oil resources and the region’s multi-faceted conflicts, along with all their attendant disruptive foreign interventions. Youth unemployment rising to very high levels and the persistence of deep economic inequality were important factors contributing to the uprisings. They were also reinforced by long frustrated aspirations for greater freedom and political participation on the part of social groups that have felt largely excluded from the benefits of economic development. As of late 2016 the outcome of the uprisings remains highly uncertain especially with the rise to power of strictly fundamentalist groups and the ensuing armed conflicts that have come in their wake. The struggle between forces pushing for a move towards democracy and those pushing for the maintenance and/or regeneration of autocracy is presently in full play. Transition experiences point to two fundamental challenges facing the consolidation of democratic transitions: firstly that the political victors be able to move in the direction of establishing genuinely representative and accountable political institutions. Secondly that they succeed in implementing an inclusive socio-economic strategy that not only focuses on growth and expanding employment opportunities but also eliminates ‘elite capture’ of the public sector.

Its aim is to examine the ways in which pastoralism operates as a highly flexible system, through the adaptations of both the domestic animals and the socioeconomic strategies of human groups to different environments and contexts. The volume achieves this through taking a comparative approach, drawing together a range of case studies from Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas, and importantly through including both present and past perspectives on pastoral societies.

Industrial development zone and South African environmental legal initiatives post-1994: a quest for sustainable industrial development

Many developing countries are currently undergoing increased industrialization, which has accelerated environmental degradation. This study aims to examine South Africa's industrial development path as a socio-economic strategy pursued along the rill-lines of sustainable industrial development (SID) in view of the post-1994 environmental legislative initiatives. An exploratory review guided the study analysis. As industrial development zones (IDZs), environmental sustainability research is virtually non-existent, leading to the poor understanding of this programme's role in SID. This study reveals that the government political commitment, 1996 South Africa's Constitution and National Environmental Act (No. 107 of 1998) are key pillars reconciling the environment and industrial development in diffusing apartheid legacies. Non-compliances re-occur in industries outside the IDZs due to shortage of environmental monitoring inspectors and government priorities changes. Therefore, there is need to ‘green’ IDZ stakeholders for proper environmental legislation implementation. Finally, the study highlights new potential directions for research into SID zoning.

Understanding Household Subsistence Activities in Neolithic Inner Mongolia, China: Functional Analyses of Stone Tools

This study attempts to reconstruct household subsistence activities in order to understand the socioeconomic strategies adapted by the earliest Neolithic populations in south-central Inner Mongolia during the fifth millennium bc. These people are likely to have originated in the Yangshao culture in the Central Plain, where millet-based agriculture was already established. We conducted residue and use-wear analyses on the most recurrent tool types found in residential areas, including grinding stones, spades, and knives. The results suggest that the Yangshao culture migrants adapted to a local foraging tradition, involving hunting large animals and collecting/cultivating diverse plant foods, mainly tubers and roots. They also maintained their Neolithic technology and probably social organization and household structure, as indicated by the presence of Neolithic toolkits, pottery, domesticates, and house structures.
