Psychological Resilience Following Disasters: A Study of Adolescents and Their Caregivers

Resilience, the process of successful adaptation to adverse circumstances, is traditionally studied as an individual characteristic. However, more recent multisystem perspectives underline the interrelatedness of systems, within and outside of the individual, in shaping coping and adaptation processes. This challenges the assumption that pathways to resilience are the same across the world, given the diversity in people’s contexts globally. In light of the preponderance of resilience research being conducted in higher-income countries, this study taps pathways to resilience in survivors of the 2018 earthquake-tsunami-liquefaction disaster in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Guided by a social representations approach and using a novel free association technique, forty caregiver-adolescent dyads (N = 80) who survived the disaster were interviewed regarding their subjective experiences of coping and adaptation. Thematic analysis of their narratives demonstrated that survivors focused on mutual support, religious beliefs and intrapersonal psychological resources of seeking strength and calmness as routes for fostering psychological recovery. The results foreground group-specific aspects of such resilience: differences between caregivers and adolescents highlight how social roles and life stage shape resilience-related beliefs and practices. Moreover, the form their resilience takes is underpinned by sociocultural values of reciprocity and social cohesion. Thus, this paper points to similarities in resilience processes across contexts, but also to differences shaped by societal roles, developmental stage and cultural values.

Unveiling the Drivers of Social Entrepreneurship Intentions: Insights from Business Graduates in Bangladesh

Young business graduates often show a higher level of entrepreneurial intention due to their ambition, energy, innovation, drive, and capacities. However, there is limited research on what drives them towards social entrepreneurship (SE) in a complex developing country such as Bangladesh. This quantitative study investigates the factors motivating business graduates’ SE intention (SEI) using 314 finalised survey responses from Bangladeshi universities. We used SPSS 25 and SmartPLS 4.0 to analyse the data and found that the need for achievement, self-confidence, and socio-cultural values, have significant positive effects on business graduates’ SEI, whereas risk-taking, and economic factors have no significant effects. These findings add value to the upper echelons theory with implications for the policymakers in similar contexts to foster SE among the youth.

A qualitative study of negative sociocultural experiences of accessing primary health care services among Africans from refugee backgrounds in Australia: implications for organisational health literacy

BackgroundPrimary health care is the first point of contact for patients from refugee backgrounds in the Australian health system. Sociocultural factors, including beliefs and value systems, are salient determinants of health literacy and access to primary health care services. Although African refugees in Australia have diverse sociocultural backgrounds, little is known about the influence of sociocultural factors on their experiences of accessing primary health care services. Guided by the theoretical framework of access to health care, this study examined from the perspective of African refugees how culturally and religiously conditioned, constructed and bound health beliefs, knowledge and practices influence their experiences of access to, acceptance and use of primary health care services and information in Australia.MethodsThis exploratory, qualitative study involved 19 African refugees from nine countries living in New South Wales, Australia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and recorded using Zoom software. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using a bottom-up thematic analytical approach for theme generation.ResultsFour main themes were identified. The themes included: participants' experiences of services as inaccessible and monocultural and providing information in a culturally unsafe and insensitive manner; the impact of the clinical care environment; meeting expectations and needs; and overcoming access challenges and reclaiming power and autonomy through familiar means. The findings generally support four dimensions in the access to health care framework, including approachability, acceptability, availability and accommodation and appropriateness.ConclusionAfrican refugees experience significant social and cultural challenges in accessing primary health care services. These challenges could be due to a lack of literacy on the part of health services and their providers in servicing the needs of African refugees. This is an important finding that needs to be addressed by the Australian health care system and services. Enhancing organisational health literacy through evidence-informed strategies in primary health systems and services can help reduce disparities in health access and outcomes that may be exacerbated by cultural, linguistic and religious differences.

Look on the bright side: the relation between family values, positive aspects of care and caregiver burden

Family-centered values are important for caregiving. However, findings on their association with burden are inconsistent. We aim to analyze whether positive aspects of caregiving are mediating the effect of familism on burden among informal caregivers of older adults in Germany. Participants (n = 277) were drawn from the Attitudes Toward Informal Caregivers (ATTIC) project and include informal long-term caregivers of older relatives (aged ≥ 60) quota-sampled from Germany (December 2023). Mediation analyses (linear OLS regression) with robust standard errors were conducted with the classic and the counterfactual causal mediation framework. The classic approach indicated a significant positive direct effect of familism on burden, a significant negative direct effect of PAC on burden and a significant negative indirect effect of familism via PAC on burden; the total effect was not significant. The causal mediation approach supports this; the interaction between familism and PAC was not significant. Thus, sociocultural family-centered values seemed to worsen burden but also to reduce it through positive experiences of caregiving, which did not depend on the strength of familism values. The findings advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the stress appraisal of the informal care situation and emphasize the role of positive experiences of care.

Development of Islamic Character Education Through The Naqsyabandiyah Qadiriyah Order Among The Sasak Wetu Telu Community

This study aims to analyze the development of Islamic character education through the Naqsyabandiyah Qadiriyah Order among the Sasak Wetu Telu community. As part of the local Islamic tradition, the Wetu Telu community has a unique approach to religious practice and social life. The approach of this order is not only aimed at strengthening spiritual understanding, but also at shaping the moral character of the community through Islamic values, such as honesty, patience, and discipline. The study used a qualitative approach with a field study method involving observation and in-depth interviews with order leaders and the local community. The results of the study indicate that the teachings of the Naqsyabandiyah Qadiriyah Order play a significant role in shaping adaptive Islamic character among the Sasak Wetu Telu such as strengthening Islamic identity, impacts on personal and social life, the role of exemplary tarekat figures, character formation through spiritual discipline, integration of Islam with local culture especially in terms of developing spirituality integrated with local socio-cultural values. These findings confirm that the integration between the order and character education can be a contextual and relevant model of Islamic character development for communities with local Islamic traditions.

Unisex Fashion as a Social Practice: A Comparative Study Between Young Heterosexual Consumers in the United States and China

Using Alan Warde’s tripartite model of practice theory (understanding, procedure, and engagement) as our theoretical framework, we compare how young heterosexual consumers in the United States and China understand, follow the perceived rules of, and engage with unisex fashion, and how different socio-cultural values and political ideologies in these two countries shape consumers’ gendered perceptions and practice of unisex style. We interviewed 15 participants in each country. Our findings suggest that unisex fashion is a more routinized practice for US participants, who appreciate gender fluidity due to a long history of fighting for gender equality and the current political emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Chinese participants, however, demonstrate a more deliberate and reflexive attitude. While they claim to embrace unisex fashion to express their gender identity, they are still restricted by a heteropatriarchal definition of gender, particularly with the recent revival of traditional gender ideologies advocated by the Chinese leadership. This comparative study of a gender-related fashion practice contributes to a reappraisal of cultural meaning within practice theories. We hope this study will stimulate further intellectual interest in the intersections of fashion studies, consumption research, and cultural sociology.

BRINGING CULTURE TO LIFE: UTILIZING WOOD CARVING IN SPEAKING CLASS

Sentani tribe in Papua had diverse cultural heritages that have now been neglected. One of them is wood carving. Despite its aesthetic and socio-cultural values, wood carving (ohomo) has not been acknowledged by most of the young Sentani generation. Thus, preservation is needed so that wood carving can be acknowledged, appreciated, and disseminated. One way of preserving this unique wisdom is by using it as a medium for teaching the English language. This will also help the learning process to be more contextual and challenging. By focusing on learning to speak, the objective of this study is to explore the strategies for teaching speaking using wood carving. This descriptive-qualitative study was conducted in Jayapura Regency Papua between May and July 2022. Data on wood carvings were collected between May and July 2022 from several informants, namely tribal chiefs, wood carvers, Sentani elders, and parents in East Sentani (Waena and Asei Island) and Central Sentani (Hobong and Yoboi). Teaching materials of wood carvings were tried out to 20 students of Senior High School Grade X from 4 different schools in Jayapura Regency via formal class and field trip. By infusing wood carving in learning to speak, the study found two important things, namely (1) the students were enthusiastic and motivated in speaking, and their confidence, as well as self-esteem, were improved; (2) the students appreciated wood carving as their cultural heritage and proud of their identity. Teachers’ creativity in infusing culture and their commitment to teaching played a significant role in reinforcing students’ appreciation of their culture and improvement in their speaking ability.

Social entrepreneurship: recognition of sociocultural competencies in the higher education future

PurposeThe present study aimed recognition sociocultural competencies in social entrepreneurship of higher education.Design/methodology/approachThe study employed a qualitative content analysis technique. In order to identify and select information-rich cases, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 22 experts among the social activists in Iran’s public and private universities based on the criterion-dependent targeted sampling method. Four credibility, transferability, dependability and conformability criteria were used to increase the accuracy of qualitative data the findings were analyzed using thematic analysis through open, axial and selective coding.FindingsSociocultural competencies in social entrepreneurship of higher education are categorized into three cognitive (cognitive requirements of entrepreneurship, sociocultural values) emotional (emotional integration, positive emotions) and behavioral (interactive communication, professional life, entrepreneurial social traits) levels at 34 subcomponents.Originality/valueHigher education with the growing trend of the challenge of cultural diversity and fusion caused by intercultural communication requires competencies that prepare social entrepreneurs for the future of higher education with the lens of socio-cultural capabilities. The neglected gap in the higher education system has empirical value for executive managers. The approach of preparing future higher education leaders for social and human benefits beyond political boundaries and cultural and social tensions, sociocultural competencies have an exclusive appeal.

Informing the development of antipsychotic-induced weight gain management guidance: patient experiences and preferences - qualitative descriptive study.

Antipsychotic-induced weight gain (AIWG) is a substantial contributor to high obesity rates in psychiatry. Limited management guidance exists to inform clinical practice, and individuals with experience of managing AIWG have had no or minimal input into its development. A lack of empirical research outlining patient values and preferences for management also exists. Recommendations addressing weight management in psychiatry may be distinctly susceptible to ideology and sociocultural values regarding intervention appropriateness and expectations of self-management, reinforcing the need for co-produced management guidance. This study is the first to ask: how do individuals conceptualise preferred AIWG management and how can this be realised in practice? 1. Explore the management experiences of individuals with unwanted AIWG. 2. Elicit their values and preferences regarding preferred management. Qualitative descriptive methodology informed study design. A total of 17 participants took part in semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was undertaken using reflexive thematic analysis. Participants reported that clinicians largely overestimated AIWG manageability using dietary and lifestyle changes. They also reported difficulties accessing alternative management interventions, including a change in antipsychotic and/or pharmacological adjuncts. Participants reported current management guidance is oversimplified, lacks the specificity and scope required, and endorses a 'one-size-fits-all' management approach to an extensively heterogenous side-effect. Participants expressed a preference for collaborative AIWG management and guidance that prioritises early intervention using the range of evidence-based management interventions, tailored according to AIWG risk, participant ability and participant preference. Integration of this research into guideline development will help ensure recommendations are relevant and applicable, and that individual preferences are represented.

Aesthetics and Choreography of Bharatanatyam

The word “Aesthetic” in the context of Indian Aesthetics means “Science and philosophy of Fine Art” Bharathe muni wrote the theoretical treatise Natyasastra on Indian performing Arts including theatre, dance acting, and Music. Natyasastra is said to explain Indian aesthetics. Natyasastra is the scientific explanation of classical Indian dances. In this context, Bharatanatyam is also grounded in the principles of the Natyashastra. This research highlights how aesthetic aspects permeate Bharathanatya choreography, which involves designing the dance according to the rhythm of the ragas, along with abhinaya, bhava, and rasa. The choreography of Bharatanatyam is based on body parts and body shape( body proposition) by various elements, including positions (sthāna), hand gestures (mudra), neck movements, eye movements, head movements, karanas, mandalas, and charis. In Bharatanatyam, the body and the shape of the body (including the organs) are the basic source. Beauty is associated with interpretation. Deciphering the symbols means interpretation. The purpose of this study is to explore how aesthetic aspects play an important role in the creation of Bharatanatyam choreography, as Bharatanatyam is an art of both design and creativity this study uses the descriptive research method, observational research method, and qualitative research method. It is descriptive in the sense that it explains the aesthetics of Bharatanatyam choreography and observational since it observes the aesthetic aspects of Bharatanatyam choreography which is method-based. Moreover, the study examines the aesthetic expressions of the performers, who also serve as observers of the art form... When Bharatanatyam is designed with aesthetic aspects in mind, it becomes a powerful and valuable dance form. Systematically, organizing and expressing choreography with these aesthetic elements leads to seamless creativity, effective communication with the audience, relevance for future generations, and the preservation of socio-cultural values.

The Second Life of Abandoned Orchards: Innovative Approaches to Land Use

As globalization accelerates, the issue of abandoned orchards has become increasingly prominent, posing a major challenge for land resource management. This paper reviews innovative approaches to the land use of abandoned orchards, aiming to explore the ecological services, economic benefits, and socio-cultural values in their transformation process. The article first analyzes the environmental impact of abandoned orchards, including soil quality degradation, water resource pollution, and biodiversity loss. Subsequently, it discusses innovative land use strategies such as smart agriculture, ecological restoration, and landscape design, and assesses the role of policy frameworks and planning in promoting sustainable land use. Through the analysis of successful domestic and international cases, the paper demonstrates the various possibilities of orchard transformation. Finally, the article summarizes the challenges and opportunities of land use transformation in abandoned orchards, providing sustainable solutions for future land management.

CULTURAL STANDARDS OF MODESTY IN THE RUSSIAN AND CHINESE LANGUAGES

The article examines cultural standards of modesty in the Russian and Chinese languages. The study is based on dictionaries and text corpora of two languages. The purpose of the work is to determine universal and nationally specific features in the formation of cultural standards of modesty in the Russian and Chinese languages. The object of the study is modesty as a traditional value of Russian and Chinese linguistic cultures. Modesty is encoded using cultural standards that reflect the essential features of modesty as a sociocultural value that characterizes Russian and Chinese cultures. The study found that in the Russian language, modesty, which is predominantly gender-based, is mainly associated with the image of a girl (woman). Modesty as a universal human quality is realized contradictorily: 1) “the modesty of a hero, a real person” and 2) “the modesty of a quiet, timid, dependent person.” In Chinese linguistic culture, “modesty” occupies a strong position, and its “standard” implementation, determined by the ideas of Confucius, is an integral part not only of etiquette, but also the worldview of the Chinese. In the Chinese language, the “standard” implementation of modesty, defined by the ideas of Confucius, is an integral part of etiquette. The Chinese modesty system is associated with natural objects and plant images that are of great importance to Chinese culture. The results of this study can be used in lexicographic practice and in teaching Russian and Chinese languages.

Unpacking Education as Migration Driver among Young Jordanian Women: A Study on Gender, Agency, and Sociocultural Transformations in Jordan

This paper explores young Jordanian women’s desire to migrate, uncovering often-unacknowledged factors influencing their decision to leave their home country. By delving into their dreams, aspirations, and expectations, this research uncovers why they firmly aspire and creatively plan to migrate, shedding light on the intricate interplay of agency and gender in shaping their migration choices. It theorizes that these women employ a co-optation strategy, whereby they reinterpret and leverage the inner meaning(s) of gendered expectations regarding education, to facilitate their journey abroad and enact more desired life trajectories. This paper argues that young Jordanian women’s desire to migrate stems from shifting sociocultural values and norms, mirroring evolving understandings of femininity, gender roles, and social hierarchies. Within this framework, migration emerges as a consequence of the country’s inability to address its young population’s aspirations for change. By addressing these dynamics, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the underlying drivers behind the migration aspirations of a significant segment of Jordan’s youth—a pressing issue the country is facing. Ultimately, the insights offer a valuable perspective on migration as a lens through which ongoing sociocultural transformations can be comprehended.

A social identity approach to understanding sustainability and environmental behaviours in South Africa

ABSTRACT In recent years, change in behaviour towards the environment has gained prominence as a policy tool to influence positive environmental value. Simultaneously, the role played by social identity in promoting pro-environmental action is gaining recognition. Within this work, the intersection between collective group identity and environmental behaviour has received very little attention. Group norms are considered a strong predictor of pro-environmental behaviour, yet the influence of social identity and collective action on environmental action has not been adequately investigated in a multi-ethnic setting. Within this context, this study examines the affective component of social identity influence on pro-environmental action. More succinctly, this study demonstrates how outgroups and in-groups’ relations and broader sociocultural structures, values, interest, and norms impact environmental and sustainability transitions behaviours. Through interviews with participants across the four dominant social groups in South Africa, this study provides compelling evidence that country-wide expressions of social identity and ingroup dynamics shapes the individual behaviour regarding environmental and sustainability concerns and further strengthen the individual’s perspective for social environmental transformation. This study advances the need for a social-identity centred approach to foster pro-environmental and sustainability outcomes. Highlights The influence that social contexts and social group memberships have on individual perception and behaviour provide important insights to build an empirical base for an inclusive environmental and sustainable action. We applied the theory of social identity to explore these processes and how normative group values and group interest shape environmental behaviour.

THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE FORMATION OFCHILDREN'S SOCIO-CULTURAL VALUES

The article analyses theoretical and methodological approaches to the problem of forming children's socio-cultural values based on the principle of multidisciplinarity, from the point of view of the phenomenology of sociology, philosophy, axiology, cultural studies, pedagogy, axiopedagogy and psychology. The author also analyses scientific approaches to the definition of the term «socio-cultural values» and clarifies the essence of the phenomenon. The essence of the concept of socio-cultural values as the basic life meanings on which a person is based in everyday life, in relation to the surrounding reality and which enshrine specific features of a particular culture and model of social behaviour is substantiated. The methodological basis for the process of forming socio-cultural values in children is a combination of personal and activity, axiological, and participatory approaches. The structure of children's socio-cultural values is defined, their typology, criteria, indicators and levels of development are outlined. According to this, the structure of this phenomenon consists of: socio-cultural macro-values; socio-cultural meso-values; socio-cultural micro-values. The components of socio-cultural values are analysed in terms of the importance of the types of values: linguistic and value component, cognitive component, and pragmatic component.

Developing Papuan State Civil Apparatus Competencies and Love for the Republic of Indonesia

Various development policies have been implemented for 61 years in Papua, but until now the welfare of the Papuan people has been far from expectations. This can be seen from the 2023 Papua Human Development Index which is in the medium category. Apart from development problems there is also the problem of political instability. The government continues to take a security and welfare approach but has not made progress in Papua. It is suspected that one of the causes of this failure is that the duties, functions, and roles of the Papuan SCA have not been optimal. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the competency of Papuan SCA through managerial training, namely, Training on PCS, SLT, ALT and NLT-Level II. Papuan SCAs have taken part in the training based on the national curriculum, but it turns out there are still thoughts of propaganda for an independent Papua. This has a negative impact on future development, so the development of SCA competencies with the national curriculum needs to be reviewed; Has the managerial training curriculum fostered Papuan SCA's love for the Republic of Indonesia and is there a managerial training model that can foster love for the Republic of Indonesia? The objectives of this KTI are Describes the love of Papuan SCAs for the Republic of Indonesia based on the implementation of the national curriculum and describes a managerial training model that can foster Papuan SCAs' love for the Republic of Indonesia. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of the research show that the national managerial training curriculum has fostered a love of Papuan SCA. It is realized that Papua has local wisdom, historical background and socio- cultural characteristics as well as development facts that are far from expectations, so the national curriculum needs to be integrated with Papuan local content, namely; Based on the local wisdom, history and socio-cultural values of the Papuan people, the managerial training curriculum in Papua is integrated into a "Papuan style" local wisdom curriculum in order to foster Papuan civil servants' love for the Republic of Indonesia.
