The European public sphere and the debate about humanitarian military interventions

Studies on the democratic control and legitimacy of Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) have thus far mostly focused on formal institutions. However, a comprehensive analysis requires including the ‘sociocultural infrastructure’ in which such formal institutions are embedded. Students of democracy have argued that the public sphere is a crucial dimension, if not a precondition for all mechanisms of democratic control in general. This paper investigates whether and in which ways Europeans participated in transnational European communication on humanitarian military interventions (1990–2005/2006). The paper analyzes a full sample of 108,677 newspaper articles published in leading newspapers of six EU member states, and the US as a comparative case. It demonstrates that the ‘national’ arenas of political communication are intertwined and allow ordinary citizens to make up their minds about common European issues in the highly controversial and normatively sensitive realm of humanitarian military interventions.

Patterns and forms of Latino cultural landscapes: southwest Detroit, a case of incremental re-adaptive use

Latino immigrants are transforming and retrofitting lifeless, dilapidated, auto-oriented urban areas to create distinctive pedestrian-oriented places filled with urban activities and cultural representation. Two of the central questions this paper seeks to address are, why do Latino neighborhoods form in large urban areas and what are the forces that shape them? I have discovered that a three-part approach is critical in documenting the influence that Latinos have on communities. Part one looks at the current changes in the demographic landscape and patterns of consumption. Part two explores the issues and topics relating to neighborhood selection based on the presence of socio-cultural infrastructure and support. Part three looks in detail at the physical aspects of urban composition and neighborhood structure. By better understanding the issues contained in each part of the creation of a Latino neighborhood, policy makers, civic leaders, urban planners and designers can more effectively repopulate and facilitate healthier urban Latino communities while benefiting from the economic revitalization of derelict urban areas.

A review on salt lake city, Kolkata, India: Master planning and realization

Motivation for construction of Salt Lake City comes from the circumstances characterizing life in Calcutta known by its social, political and cultural activities. Among many problems, the City was faced with poverty and overcrowding. West Bengal Government realized that serious steps have to be taken to resolve the situation. One of the biggest actions of the Government was creation of so called 'NEDECO' Plan for reclamation certain area of the Salted Lakes, followed by the tender for urban planning. The enterprise for water ways Ivan Milutinovic was considered the most convenient for both: reclamation and planning. The Conceptualization covers the Main Aims and interests forming plan basis where three factors were selected: urban character, new vs old town, inhabitants and town growth. Follows Existing Land Use Pattern of the Municipal Area. The realization of the Salt Lake Master Plan, as a part of the Municipal Area, is shown through an Overview of Achieved Infrastructure covering Roads, Water Supply, Sewerage, Area Level Storm Water Drainage, Solid Waste Management and, finally, through the Other Municipal Services, such as: Administrative Infrastructure, Health Infrastructure, Greeneries, Water bodies, Socio-Cultural Infrastructure. .

Aging Society as Late Modernity and “Radical Aging”

Beginning with a historical recognition of aging society, this paper attempts to construct a framework which links the issue of human aging with social reform.Firstly, this paper regards the historical context of aging society as a phase of “reflexive late modernity.” Secondly, based on this recognition, this paper critically examines social gerontological studies in Japan, and discusses the efficacy of the concept of human development. I will then introduce the concept of “radical aging.” The following sections of this paper applies the term “radical aging” to a specific issue. In particular, the “turning point in midlife” in contemporary Japan is considered to be an intensive phenomenon of “radical aging.” As a result, “reflexive socialization” is introduced as a key concept of “radical aging.” In addition, this paper examines how this concept contributes to the issue of reforming the socio-cultural infrastructure.
