CAA Annual Meeting

The 58th annual meeting of the College Art Association of America, Inc. (convening jointly as in past years with the Society of Architectural Historians) was held in Washington, D.C. on January 28, 29, 30, 31 and February 1, 1970 with headquarters at the vast Sheraton-Park Hotel. For once (the first time in years) the lobbies and public rooms of the hotel were adequate for the crowds that come to these meetings. From the report of CAA's harassed business manager, Gene Lessard, we gathered some interesting statistics. As of January 1, 1970 the Association had 6067 paid members of which approximately 2500 are students. During 1969 there was an increase of 488 new members over the cancellations (each year there is a large turnover, coming mainly from graduate students who join to gain use of the Placement Service, and presumably lapse their membership temporarily thereafter). There were over 3,000 paid registrations at the meeting of which approximately one third were from students. It is estimated that at least half of those attending were members of CAA.

College Art News

AbstractThe 48th Annual Meeting of the College Art Association of America was held in New York on January 28, 29, and 30, 1960 with headquarters at the Sheraton-Atlantic Hotel (formerly McAlpin, see our previous issue, XIX, 2, for preliminary program). Slightly over 1000 persons registered, and the Society of Architectural Historians, meeting jointly reported 200 registrations, making a total of over 1200, the largest yet recorded. They came from 43 states including Hawaii, many members were from Canada and a few from other parts of the world. 229 schools, colleges and universities sent representatives, also 7 libraries, 30 museums, and 14 galleries. Unfortunately, the lobby outside the lecture rooms was utterly inadequate for the large crowds, which caused frequent noisy interruptions of the speakers and general confusion. The “slave market” was brisker than ever. Multitudes gathered in corridors, lecture rooms, elevators, bars—everywhere except the business meeting, which as usual was sparsely attended.

44th Annual Meeting

AbstractThe forty-fourth annual meeting of the College Art Association was held in Pittsburgh, jointly with the Society of Architectural Historians, from January 26 through January 29, 1956. Headquarters were in the Webster Hall Hotel, registration at the Henry Clay Frick Fine Arts Department on the seventh floor of the Cathedral of Learning, University of Pittsburgh. Meetings were held in several buildings nearby, the University's Stephen Foster Memorial Auditorium, the Mellon Institute, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and in the Cathedral of Learning. The total enrolled attendance was 383. One hundred twenty-eight colleges, universities and art schools, thirty-four museums and galleries, four foreign institutions, and sixteen professional art organizations were represented.
