John I. Lacey (1915-2004).

John I. Lacey died on June 27, 2004. He was one of the pioneers in the integration of psychology and physiology. He worked to establish concepts that cut across disciplines -- eschewing specialization within a cross-disciplinary area. Although a guiding figure in the founding of the Society for Neuroscience, John remained very active in the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Society for Psychophysiological Research until his professional retirement. John's career was characterized by a focused search for specific mechanisms defining how psychological processes interact with physiological processes. John Lacey has left us a legacy of a scientific approach that focuses directly on the relation between psychological concepts and their realization in physiological function. His creativity and breadth of knowledge contributed mightily to the currently burgeoning fields of neuroscience and behavioral medicine. His approach reminds us to continue to include solid psychological science when venturing into these fields.

Forensic “Lie Detection”

This paper provides a critical overview of the scientific status of the control question test (CQT), the type of polygraph test most likely to be used in forensic settings. The CQT is based on an implausible set of assumptions that makes it biased against innocent individuals and easy for guilty persons to defeat using countermea-sures. Due to serious methodological problems that characterize research on CQT validity, it is not possible to use the existing literature to provide a satisfactory error rate estimate. Scientists, including members of the Society for Psychophysiological Research and APA Fellows, hold negative views about the CQT. They do not believe that it is based on sound theory, that it has adequate psychometric properties, or that it should be used as evidence in court.

1998 Tursky Award Winner

The Society for Psychophysiological Research is pleased to announce Mark W. Miller of Florida State University as the recipient of the 1998 Tursky Award for excellence in predoctoral research. His presentation was selected from all submissions listing pre‐doctoral students as senior author at the 38th Annual SPR Meeting in Denver, Colorado. His award‐winning presentation, entitled “Startle reflex and reaction time examination of the anxious individual's response to threat,” was coauthored by Christopher J. Patrick.

精神生理学会（アメリカ）勧告による皮膚コンダクタンス測定器の試作

It has been recommended by The Society for Psychophysiological Research (USA) that skin conductance should be recorded by the application of constant voltage 0.5 V across the electrodes, and the resultant current should be measured by the amplification of potential across a small resistor in series with the skin. A simple and inexpensive circuit has been recommended for this purpose. However, we cannot afford the same circuit in Japan, since the reference diode LM 113 T is not available. A Japanese version for this purpose is proposed, with satisfactory results.

Abstracts of Papers Presented at the Fifteenth Annual Meeting of The Society for Psycho physiological Research

The Fifteenth Annual Meeting of The Society for Psycho physiological Research was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Toronto, Ontario. Canada. October 16. 17. 18, and 19, 1975, Members of the Program Committee were: J. Richard Jennings. Chairman; James Averill; Anne Schell: Neil Schneiderman; and Gary E. Schwartz.Symposia and mini‐courses comprised most of the day‐time program. Research reports accepted for presentation were given and discussed informally at two Science Fairs, one during the evening of October 17 and the other on the afternoon of October 18. and in addition, two paper sessions were given, one on the evening of October 16 and the other an the morning of October 19th. Following are the abstracts of those research reports, and of additional acceptable ones for which there was no room in the meeting program (Read By Title Only).
