Bibliometric analysis of the papers on urban education

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the papers published on urban education and analyze the characteristics of these papers to contribute to the urban education research over the recent years. Design/methodology/approach Researchers generated a comprehensive list of the articles published between 2010 and 2017 in the field of “urban education” by searching the Social Sciences Citation Index database, using the keywords of “urban” and “education.” As an additional criterion, all the articles published between 2010 and 2017 in the journals of Urban Education and Education and Urban Society were included. Findings There are a total of 2,123 publications that were checked and retrieved in the field of “urban education” between 2010 and 2017. Although the number of publications differs year by year, the sum of the citations received the increase from year to year on a regular basis. There are 35 articles that were cited more than h-index, as h-classics in this field for this period and top 10 of these h-classics are reported in this study. Urban Education and Education and Urban Society were revealed as the most prominent journals in the field of urban education. Also, the results show that the most cited articles, the most prolific authors and organizations, and top journals in this field are from the USA. Research limitations/implications The scope of this study is not extensive enough, and the data obtained are not comprehensive enough. The survey was limited to the keyword of “urban education” in the fields of title, abstract, author keywords and keywords plus. Practical implications This bibliometric analysis contributes to the literature of urban education through a historical perspective. Results show that the “urban education” field attracts more attention of the researchers and the impacts of these publications are increasing from year to year. Also, there is a prevalence of the USA in the field of urban education. Originality/value The information presented in this paper provides insight into the development of urban education research over the recent years. The data obtained in this study can be used as a reference for future researchers in urban education.

The importance of policy entrepreneurs in developing countries: A systematic review and future research agenda

SummaryHow and with what effect policy entrepreneurship occurs is a persistent and intriguing question for scholars of public policy and administration and political science. So far, the main interest has been on policy entrepreneurship in developed countries rather than developing countries, which largely remains a black box. Adopting a systematic approach to reviewing the literature, this article aims to fill this void. It investigates when, why, and how policy and institutional reforms in developing countries take place, with special reference to the role of policy entrepreneurs. It reviews selected articles published in the Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge Social Science Citation Index database from 1984 to 2018. It aims to show the current state of empirical and theoretical knowledge about policy entrepreneurship in developing countries and persistent knowledge gaps. The present review contributes to the body of knowledge on this topic in three main ways. First, we provide a comprehensive review of policy entrepreneurship in developing countries. Second, we consolidate existing research in the political science, public policy and administration, and politicial economy disciplines. Third, we establish connections between fragmented literatures, identify gaps between different research streams, and suggest promising paths for future research on policy entrepreneurship in developing countries.

A BIBLIOMETRIC OVERVIEW OF THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF STRATEGIC PROPERTY MANAGEMENT BETWEEN 2008 AND 2019

The International Journal of Strategic Property Management (IJSPM) is an interdisciplinary journal which provides a forum for a broad range of strategic property management research. The topics such as asset and facilities management, property policy, risk management, residential property value enhancement, and housing finance are included in the scope of the IJSPM’s investigation. The aim of this study is to provide a bibliometric analysis of the papers published by the IJSPM which is collected in the well-known Social Science Citation Index database and analyse the current status and the emerging trends of the research outputs in the IJSPM with some broadly utilized as well as diversely designed indicators. By analysing the annual publication distribution, the citation structure, the co-citation and cooperation networks, and the influential contributors on the aspects of specific countries/regions, institutions, cited journals, and authors, the status quo of the IJSPM publications is presented. Also, the emerging trends are explored through the analyses of timeline view and burst detection. We make the contributions in terms of visualizing the complex and significant results based on the objective and quantitative data. This paper assists researchers with an understanding of the development of the IJSPM, which gives useful information for further researches and submitting works.

Mapping the research of energy subsidies: a bibliometric analysis

A review of energy subsidy research from a bibliometric perspective was conducted. Based on the bibliometric method, a statistical analysis of energy subsidy-related publications from 1997 to 2016 was undertaken using the Science Citation Index (SCI) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) databases. A total of 1182 publications were retrieved, with a significant increase in the number of publications observed after 2006. The majority of these publications were within the disciplines of Energy & Fuels and Environmental Science & Ecology. Although the USA and China contributed the most papers, authors from 96 countries were involved in the various studies. The USA was the center of global collaborations, while other countries/territories mainly conducted bilateral or regional collaborations in their research activities. Five of the top 11 most productive institutes were from China, followed by the USA. The frequency of collaborations among institutes was relatively low. However, the institute-keyword 2-mode network showed that institutes had great potential to cooperate on a number of common topics. Five major themes were identified from the co-keywords analysis: general renewable energy research, bio-energies, sustainability, subsidies, and welfare. The findings, as a complement to previous conventional reviews, will be useful in future energy subsidy research.

Policies that limit youth access and exposure to tobacco: a scientific neglect of the first stages of the policy process

BackgroundPolicymakers can adopt and implement various supply-side policies to limit youth access and exposure to tobacco, such as increasing the minimum age of sale, limiting the number or type of tobacco outlets, or banning the display of tobacco products. Many studies have assessed the impact of these policies, while less is known about the preceding policy process. The aim of our review was to assess the available evidence on the preceding process of agenda setting, policy formulation, and policy legitimation.MethodsA systematic literature search was conducted using the PubMed and the Social Sciences Citation Index databases. After selection, 200 international peer-reviewed articles were identified and analyzed. Through a process of close reading, evidence based on scientific enquiry and anecdotal evidence on agenda setting, policy formulation and policy legitimation was abstracted from each article.ResultsScientific evidence on the policy process is scarce for these policies, as most of the evidence found was anecdotal. Only one study provided evidence based on a scientific analysis of data on the agenda setting and legitimation phases of policy processes that led to the adoption of display bans in two Australian jurisdictions.ConclusionThe processes influencing the adoption of youth access and exposure policies have been grossly understudied. A better understanding of the policy process is essential to understand country variations in tobacco control policy.

A Bibliometrics analysis on big data research (2009–2018)

At present, the concepts, technologies and methods of big data are constantly spreading to all areas of the society. The arrival of big data has brought about tremendous changes in many areas of the people’s social life, and at the same time, it has caused profound changes in the development of society. This paper uses the bibliometric analysis and the visual analysis methods to systematically study and analyze the big data publications included in the Science Citation Index (SCI) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) databases. On the one hand, it analyzes the most influential countries, journals, research institutions. On the other hand, the co-occurrence of author keywords of the publications are investigated, and the current research hotspots and future development trends are explored. The research in this paper is helpful for relevant scholars to understand the development status and trends in this field.

THE EVOLUTION OF "TECHNOLOGICAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF ECONOMY“: A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS

The Technological and Economic Development of Economy (TEDE) journal was founded 25 years ago and it plays an important role in the economic field. The purposes of this study are to present a bibliometric analysis of the TEDE publications that are included in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) database and identify the characteristics and evolution of the TEDE journal through some commonly used as well as various kinds of newly designed indicators. Firstly, annual and geographical distributions, author and manuscript characteristics of the TEDE publications are explored. Secondly, leading contributors including countries/territories, institutions, and authors are presented. The thematic analyses based on co-occurrence of keywords are presented lastly. The main advantages of this study are that all the analysis results are entirely based on objective data and the complex and important results are visualized. This study helps in understanding the development of the TEDE journal and has certain reference value for scholars in the economic field.

What is the difference in global research on Central Asia before and after the collapse of the USSR: a bibliometric analysis

Central Asia currently plays an important role on the global stage due to its geographical position and the region has been receiving increased research attention. We conducted a bibliometric analysis for the years 1900–2016 to evaluate differences in global research on Central Asia before and after the collapse of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), based on the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) databases. This paper adopted a comparative analysis approach and summarized publication outputs, subject categories, country productivity, collaborations, title keywords and institution productivity on Central Asia before and after the collapse of the USSR. We analyzed the relationship between global research outputs on Central Asia and relevant impact factors, including the number of tourists, exports of fuel oil and gross domestic product (GDP). Comparing results before and after the collapse of the USSR, our bibliometric analysis revealed the following: (1) publications on Central Asia experienced a meteoric growth and publications in the SCIE played a dominant role after the collapse of the USSR; (2) Geology, Environmental Sciences & Ecology and Paleontology increased the most while Science & Technology—Other Topics, Geography and Anthropology decreased dramatically; (3) research countries became increasingly diversified and publications were produced by increasing numbers of international collaborations with a diversification of major collaborators; (4) the focus of title keywords differed before and after the collapse of the USSR; (5) institutions became more diversified and most of them focused on natural sciences; (6) there were high correlations between publications on Central Asia and the number of tourists, exports of fuel oil and GDP. These results reflect the close relationship between scholarly outputs on Central Asia and relevant factors, including the number of tourists, export of fuel oil and GDP. Increasing scholarly outputs on Central Asia therefore had a positive impact on global Central Asia research.

The use of the concept of transition in different disciplines within health and social welfare: An integrative literature review.

AimsTo continuing the quest of the concept of transition in nursing research and to explore how the concept of transition is used in occupational therapy, oral health and social work as well as in interdisciplinary studies in health and welfare, between 2003–2013.DesignAn integrative literature review.MethodsPubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, DOSS, SocIndex, Social Science Citation Index and AMED databases from 2003–2013 were used. Identification of 350 articles including the concept of transition in relation to disciplines included. Assessment of articles are in accordance to Meleis' typologies of transition by experts in each discipline. Chosen key factors were entered into Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).ResultsMeleis' four typologies were found in all studied disciplines, except development in oral health. The health‐illness type was the most commonly explored, whereas in social work and in occupation therapy, situational transitions dominated.

Influences on the access to and use of formal community care by people with dementia and their informal caregivers: a scoping review

BackgroundThe literature describes the obstacles to sufficient care faced by people with dementia and their informal caregivers. Although factors influencing access and utilisation are frequently studied, the body of knowledge lacks an overview of aspects related to influence. The frequently used Behavioural Model of Health Care Use (BM) could be used to structure and explain these aspects. An adaptation of the BM emphasises psychosocial influences and appears to enrich the understanding of the use of long-term care for dementia.MethodsWe conducted a scoping review with the aim of providing an overview of the aspects influencing the access to and utilisation of formal community care in dementia. Our search covered the PubMed, CINAHL, Social Science Citation Index and PsychInfo databases, as well as grey literature. Two researchers assessed the full texts for eligibility. A data extraction form was developed and tested. We analysed the main topics investigated by the studies and mapped and described the investigated psychosocial aspects according to the BM after narratively summarising the findings. We used the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool (MMAT) to critically appraise the included studies.ResultsA total of 94 studies were included: n = 55 with quantitative designs, 35 with qualitative designs and four with mixed methods. The studies investigated different services, mainly focusing on health care services. One third of the studies provided information regarding the severity of dementia. The most frequently investigated main topics were ethnicity and attitudes towards services. Psychosocial aspects were frequently investigated, although few studies considered the perspectives of people with dementia. Approximately half of the studies reported a theoretical framework. The adapted BM facilitated the structuring and description of psychosocial aspects. However, this instrument did not address topics beyond the scope of psychosocial aspects, such as sociodemographic characteristics.ConclusionsThe access to and utilisation of formal community care for dementia can only be partly explained by individual influencing aspects. Therefore, a theoretical framework would likely help to describe this complex subject. Our findings indicate that the psychosocial categories of the adapted BM enriched the original BM, and that people with dementia should more often be included in healthcare service research to ensure a better understanding of the barriers to accessing formal community care.

Global trend of open innovation research: A bibliometric analysis

A bibliometric approach was conducted to evaluate the global scientific outputs of open innovation based on literature in Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) database from 2003 to 2017, with the ultimate goal of assisting researchers to fulfil the potentiality of open innovation research and to establish future directions. Overall, 1,046 articles in 318 journals were analysed by research performance of countries, continents and institutes, authorship, journals, most cited articles, first articles, author-keywords, keywords plus and paper titles to identify relevant trends in this period. This study demonstrates that Europe was the most productive continent featured by Italy’s remarkable surge by 150% in total articles between 2016 and 2017. However, with respect to research performance by country, the USA came top with the highest total number of articles. The analysis of keywords groups in this study shows that while intangible assets were given decreasing attention, issues pertaining to business performance, firm openness and innovation capacity became foci in open innovation research. Articles were published by top journals which all featured the “management” field in their subject categories, indicating that open innovation spectrum was mainly explored in the field of management.

The spatial-temporal transfer of scientometrics research topics based on citation analysis

In this study, the spatial-temporal transfer of research topics in the field of scientometrics was analysed through citation analysis and information visualization tools such as CiteSpace and Google Fusion Tables software. We collected 12,839 articles, including 214,748 references, about citation analysis in Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) databases for the period of 1971 to July 2016 as the data source. We obtained the following findings: The transfer of central research topics in the field of scientometrics is accelerating. There have been three milestones: the middle of the 1990s, 2005, and 2010. The number of central research topics has also changed from one between 1971 and 1993 to two after 1994 and three after 2008. At the same time, the geographical centres of scientometrics research showed a general shift from the US and Britain to Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, and China. At present, the countries that are centres of research include the Netherlands, US, Belgium, China, Spain, and Italy. There is a close positive correlation between the transfer of the central research topic and the transformation of the country to a centre of research. The countries acting as centres of research enjoy not only a high output of literature, but also a great academic influence. Both the theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

Evolution of the field of ecological restoration over the last three decades: a bibliometric analysis

Ecological restoration studies have been widely conducted for many years to solve eco‐environmental problems. However, no publications offer a systematic and quantitative analysis of the evolution of the field of ecological restoration. To address this knowledge gap, for the first time, we applied a bibliometric analysis approach to analyze ecological restoration studies. We analyzed 3,929 articles published between 1988 and 2017 catalogued in the Science Citation Index Expanded database and the Social Sciences Citation Index database. The results show that annual article output stably increased after 2004, and the number of annual articles of each country has also increased notably since then. The United States occupies the leading position in ecological restoration studies, with China attaining a close second position in recent years. Four institutions and seven journals are outstanding in the field of ecological restoration. Academic collaborations of authors or institutions exhibit an increasing trend, but international collaboration needs to be strengthened because eco‐environmental problems are a global challenge. Forest, grassland, and wetland ecosystems have received the most attention. Biodiversity, ecosystem services, and climate change are core issues of ecological restoration studies and are predicted to remain the research hotspots in the future. Novel ecosystems are likely to become one of the most important research areas in the near future. More importantly, it is crucial for researchers to places more emphasis on social issues of ecological restoration in the future.

MSME competitiveness in small island economies: a comparative systematic review of the literature from the past 24 years

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this paper is to consolidate the extant literature on firm competitiveness in general and compare it to the literature related to micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) competitiveness generally and then specifically to literature on MSME competitiveness in small island economies (SIEs). The paper contrasts these three research threads to develop a research framework to guide the future MSME research agenda in small island economies. This systematic literature review uses the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) database for citation analysis to identify the most influential research, and the Ex Libris’ Primo Central Index (PCI) and EBSCO Caribbean Search database for small island-specific literature. The review identifies the research themes of most relevance to MSMEs in small island economies. The paper found that research on MSMEs competitiveness in small island economies should focus on the moderating role of country-level characteristics on the relationships between the sources of competitiveness such as, intellectual capital, human capital management, social capital, innovation, internationalization as well as strategy implementation; and firm competitiveness outcomes. The value of the paper is that it shows the differences in the competitiveness priorities of large firms versus MSMEs and small island MSMEs.

Evolution of the Scientific Literature on Input–Output Analysis: A Bibliometric Analysis of 1990–2017

This study attempts to characterize the literature related to input–output analysis between 1990–2017 through bibliometric analysis technology based on the Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index databases. By means of bibliometric tools, this paper provides deep insights on the patterns of these articles, the most influential works and authors, and the emerging research topics. The results imply that China and the United States (USA) are the leading countries in terms of publication output. The Chinese Academy of Sciences is the most productive research institution, followed by Beijing Normal University and the University of Sydney. The Journal of Cleaner Production, Ecological Economics, and Energy Policy are the top mainstream journals in the input–output analysis-related field. Based on network analysis, this paper also discovers the hidden collaboration patterns and interrelations of countries, institutions, and authors. The bibliographic coupling and keywords concurrence networks are adopted to illustrate the input–output analysis evolution over time, and identify the current key research hotspots. The obtained results will help scientific researchers better understand the research status and frontier trends in this field, permit researchers to know the current research interests in the input–output analysis field, and provide useful information for further investigation and publication strategies.

Bibliometric analysis of Central European journals in the Web of Science and JCR Social Science Edition

This paper deals with the multi-perspective bibliometric analysis of Central European scientific journals indexed in the Web of Science database and covered in the Journal Citation Reports – Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). The analysis focuses on the evaluation of the (inter) national orientation of Central European Social Science journals indexed in the period 2012 – 2015. Data were obtained from the Web of Science database on October 20, 2016. The journals are divided in two groups in favour of the scientific discipline identifying the journal in the Web of Science. The first group consists of journals belonged to public health and psychology. The second group includes all social related scientific journals covered in both the SSCI and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) databases. Journals were chosen by language versions of journals in the Web of Science, language versions of articles, authors’ most important institutional affiliations; and other statistically significant indicators provided by Clarivate Analytics. Assessment of the “openness of Central European journals” to foreign authors was analyzed on the basis of the “INO indicator” (Index of National Orientation). Statistical analyses were conducted on the articles which carry the relevant scientific information. Descriptive statistics was used for the data analysis, using frequencies, percentages and means. The results of this research showed a strong orientation towards Slovakian and Czech authors regardless of the two analyzed groups.  Based on INO, most of the Central European journals quality and impact were comparatively low.  A competitive environment has been created for journals in the social science disciplines, especially for those with competitors in neighboring countries in fields such as psychology, economics, geography and sociology. &nbsp

A systematic review of working conditions and occupational health among immigrants in Europe and Canada

BackgroundA systematic attempt to summarize the literature that examines working conditions and occupational health among immigrant in Europe and Canada.MethodsWe established inclusion criteria, searched systematically for articles included in the Medline, Embase and Social Sciences Citation Index databases in the period 2000–2016 and checked the reference lists of all included papers.ResultsEighty-two studies were included in this review; 90% were cross-sectional and 80% were based on self-report. Work injuries were consistently found to be more prevalent among immigrants in studies from different countries and in studies with different designs. The prevalence of perceived discrimination or bullying was found to be consistently higher among immigrant workers than among natives. In general, however, we found that the evidence that immigrant workers are more likely to be exposed to physical or chemical hazards and poor psychosocial working conditions is very limited. A few Scandinavian studies support the idea that occupational factors may partly contribute to the higher risk of sick leave or disability pension observed among immigrants. However, the evidence for working conditions as a potential mediator of the associations between immigrant status and poor general health and mental distress was very limited.ConclusionSome indicators suggest that immigrant workers in Europe and Canada experience poorer working conditions and occupational health than do native workers. However, the ability to draw conclusions is limited by the large gaps in the available data, heterogeneity of immigrant working populations, and the lack of prospectively designed cohort studies.

Large-scale assessment of global green innovation research trends from 1981 to 2016: A bibliometric study

Abstract This work applies large-scale bibliometric, and visual analytic, techniques to green innovation based on the Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Science Citation Index databases over the period of 1981–2016. By analysing the basic characteristics of 2691 publications, the results of this work show that: the domain of green innovation has entered a period of exponential development; the historical development process is distinctly separated into two periods, and the former grew smoothly while the later increased dramatically.; the contributions are geographically and institutionally distinct, with the USA and University of California System the key regions performing such research; the comprehensive strength of the USA sees it rank first in the field, followed by The Netherlands and UK. Only China and India represent the developing nations among the top 15; the extent of auctorial collaboration in this area presents a clear upward trend, but institutional and national collaboration remains low and stable. Besides, distributions of geography, journals and categories, productive authors and frequently cited articles, etc. are obtained: articles in this domain are mainly distributed in the USA, China, and the UK; the most productive journal, and author are the Journal of Cleaner Production, J Blascovich (USA); Environmental Sciences Ecology is the most popular category among all of the publications surveyed; the most highly cited article was written by Laursen K and Salter A and was published in the Strategic Management Journal in 2006. Building on the frequency analysis and co-citation analysis of author keywords, it indicates that: “innovation” is the most highly used keyword; “green technology” is a new emerging topic whose upward trend is accelerating; researchers pay close attention to “environment”, as well as “sustainability”; life cycle assessment theory is the most widely used theory; “patents” as a main explanatory variable to measure technical output in econometric models is widely utilized. Finally, several suggestions for the future research are given.
