A paradox of the social production of urban space: environmental sustainability and vulnerable territories in Londrina/PR/Brazil

The social production of urban space is marked by the segregationist pattern. This encourages denial of decent housing for a portion of the Brazilian population, which has to seek vulnerable territories (favelas) as a survival strategy. The aim of this article is to present the reality scenario where these vulnerable territories (favelas) are present in the urban space of Londrina/PR, which unfolds in the concern to enter into the paradox between the formal construction environment and these territories, as most of them are located in areas of permanent preservation (APP's), which by precept of the Laws: Forest Code (2012) Environmental Code of Londrina (2012), should be preserved. A qualitative approach was the used methodology in the research, with the theoretical-methodological framework based on Lefebvre (2006) and primary and secondary sources were used to obtain the data. Environmental laws clash with the information obtained in the survey: the existence of 69 vulnerable territories, with 3,160 families (10,867 people, 2017) rising to 3,815 families (12,240 people) in 2020 (LONDRINA, 2021). This reality results in the lack of convergence between the territorial planning policy (PDM) and policies such as: environmental, housing, environmental sanitation (other sectoral policies) that should be integrated in favor of the development of inclusive and socially and environmentally sustainable cities, which could contribute to overcoming the paradox of the social production of space

The expansion of the urban perimeter of Londrina-Pr combined with the peripheral construction of housing complexes: in search of a sustainable development

Under the dominance of the capitalist system, cities follow the logic of the market, since the interests of the most varied agents, such as land and real estate producers, with the consent of the State, determine the social production of urban space, a reality that can be found in the city of Londrina-PR. In this context, the objective of this article was to present what is - and if it exists - sustainability in the expansion of the urban perimeter of the city of Londrina-PR, having as a parameter the construction of housing complexes in peripheral areas of the city. To achieve this objective, the dialectic was used as a guiding paradigm, based on the document analysis method. It is concluded that despite being considered a relatively young city, Londrina-Pr was - and continues to be - the stage of an accelerated and disorderly territorial and population growth, where the construction of housing complexes contributed to the increase of the city's territorial area, placing in motion real estate speculation due to the emergence of large urban voids. This reality contributes to the perpetuation of a segregationist logic, where a large part of the population does not have access to basic infrastructure, demonstrating that the city does not have a sustainable development aimed at the quality of life of the population. There is an urgent need to change this reality.

Production of Railwayscape in urban environment: Analysing railway heritage tourism potential in Siliguri City, India

For a long time, it has been argued that the theories and practices devoted to urban planning and management should conform to the fundamental role of planning policies in the production of urban space, but not merely the spatial distribution of the produced services. Towards this wider connotation, this study introduces the notion of Railwayscape, grounded on the theory of ‘The Production of Space’, to examine the role of railway station districts as catalysts of urban development through the social production of urban space. The present research sets out to establish the notion of Railwayscape and apply it in a railway heritage, i.e., the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) and its point of inception, Siliguri City, India. Accordingly, a criteria-based evaluation of four railway station districts (New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri Town, Siliguri Junction, and Sukna) in Siliguri and its surroundings was performed. The information regarding the selected four railway station districts is obtained through field observation and key informant consultation, supplemented by published literature and remote sensing data. This evaluation is succeeded by the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis accentuating the potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with the selected four railway station districts and their prospects to become the potential Railwayscape. The results of this research show that there is no railway station district in Siliguri that can fully meet the demands of the locals and tourists, therefore, relfecting a lack of awareness of the historical values of these districts. The results also indicate that there are significant differences in the relative potentials of railway station districts to become the Railwayscape in urban environment. The outcomes of this research, therefore, are expected to encourage policy-making insitutions and practitioners to realise the ‘place value’ of some railway station districts and their potentials to yield better economic, social and structural virtue for a wide range of actors.

The effects of “new centralities” on Goiania’s urban space

This article describes the process of configuration of new centralities in the city of Goiânia and its effects on urban space production, mainly in the last 50 years. Initially, the concepts of center and centrality are presented, followed by the analysis of three fundamental conditions of urban structuring in the metropolis: “unplanned” urban expansion; multiple urban development axes; and (apparently) disconnected and fragmented centralities. Subsequently, the production of urban space in Goiânia (1933-2020), is the object of analysis, as well as the effects of the “new centralities” in its urban expansion process. The urban analysis methodology consists of the analysis of historic documentation from its urban planning process through the last decades and fieldwork documentation. Thus, this article discusses the (re)configuration and (re)signification of centralities as a result of the social production of urban space, as well as its effects on urban expansion and on the expansion of socio-spatial segregation in Goiânia in the 21st century. Therefore, we focus in the description of the strategies of economic and political control of the territory in the emergence of “new centralities”, understanding it as protagonists of the urban structuring of the metropolis of Goiás, influencing urban expansion, socio-spatial segregation and institutionalization of the urban peripheries.

Making the city through participatory video: implications for urban geography

ABSTRACT Participatory video-making represents a significant opportunity within urban geography. Reflecting on two participatory video-making processes in Seville, Spain, this article examines, firstly, the epistemological opportunities contained within a participatory video-making process. Specifically, it reflects on the potentials and limitations of participatory video as a mode of urban geographical inquiry. Secondly, this article draws on critical urban theory to examine the dialectical relations between the practice of participatory video-making and the social production of urban space. In doing so, the article sets out a potential approach toward constructing a critical ontology of urban geographical research, which elucidates the relations between research, methodology, subject, and place.

Public Space and Social Polarization. A case study of the New Wave Turkish Migrants with a comparative analysis of Berlin, İstanbul & Ankara

Public space is by no means a place for complete unity or harmony. It is always open to contradiction and struggle. It is a space in which dwellers of the city find various ways to cope with living with one another. This could be in the form of negotiation, or confrontation. Or, it could be where they avoid others, where they maintain distance. Yet, there is always the expectation of all parties, to have one’s own place in that struggle. Turkey has experienced increased social polarization in recent years, and this is reflected in its public spaces. With the ‘us’ versus ‘them’ mentality in politics being also found in everyday urban life, the gap between different lifestyles has greatened, hostility among people has intensified and urban space became a battlefield rather than a ground for commons. Hate and intolerance began to define what is public. In the meantime, a great number of high-skilled, young individuals, particularly from İstanbul and Ankara, began to leave the country to carve out a better future; and, one of the popular destinations was Berlin, Germany. This paper addresses this group of young migrants to make a comparative analysis on the definitions of public space and to rethink the social production of urban space. With thirty interviews and two focus groups, it aims to consider the reflections of social polarization on public space.

La Producción Elitista del Espacio Urbano Carioca: de los Cortiços y Favelas al Porto Maravilha

The city of Rio de Janeiro, as other Latin-American cities, have been experiencing the impacts of neoliberal policies exaggerated in periods of FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games: Among them, the persistent violations of the right to housing and the right to the city, especially of marginal and marginalized sectors of population. Nevertheless, the exclusionary and elitist city project was planned before, in the beginnings of the modern urban planning in Brazil. In this way, the present article pretends to analyze –from the review of previous studies– the process of social production of urban space in Rio, in order to confirm the hypothesis that the social-spatial segregation is the result of an historic process of an elitist development, that materializes on the urban reforms from beginnings of the twenty first century. The modern and contemporary urban reforms define and reinforce the characteristic informal scenario of Latin- American cities: favelas, villas miseria, barriadas and many others forms of popular habitat.

There is something irrevocable in architecture. In contrast with a painting or a musical play, one cannot alter an architectural work of art other than by blowing it up or pulling it down. Streets, buildings, squares and parks are part of the hard, physical environment in which we organize our lives. But why conceptualize architecture as a finished product? What happens when the plans have been drawn, the buildings completed, the public space decorated and the pictures taken for design journals and marketing advertisements? How does the ‘hard’ city of architecture and urban planning relate to the ‘soft’ city of residents and users? How do people appropriate the planned city and make it their home? The thesis ‘Hard city, soft city’ is an anthropological study on the role of images and symbolic representations in the social production of urban space in Nieuwland, a post-war neighborhood of Schiedam, which is undergoing a process of large-scale restructuring. A central theme of the book is the intersection between planned and lived space. That is, between the city as object of planning and policy and as an object of everyday identity formation. The architecture and urban structure of post-war neighborhoods have been subject of numerous publications, but it is striking how little we know about everyday life that has unfolded in the years after completion. The book sets out to approach urban space not only from a physical and architectural point of view, but also as a social and cultural domain which is claimed by various groups and institutions. This is examined through the images, symbols and stories used by professionals and residents to give form, meaning and substance to urban space, such as in branding and narrative cartography. Using the philosophical work of Michel de Certeau and Henri Lefebvre, the book examines how an anthropology of urban space contributes to our knowledge on the city, as a political object of policy, architecture and planning and as an everyday living environment.

Gentrificação e resistência popular nas feiras e portos públicos da Estrada Nova em Belém (PA)

Resumo Este artigo considera a resistência popular nas feiras e portos públicos da Estrada Nova, atual av. Bernardo Sayão. Interpreta a ocupação da parte sul da orla de Belém, analisada em termos da produção social do espaço urbano. A resistência popular busca manter os portos públicos da Palha e do Açaí como lugar de trocas econômicas e culturais múltiplas, contra a intenção do poder público municipal de ‘gentrificar’ ou enobrecer essa margem urbana da cidade, removendo os atuais usuários, mediante o projeto denominado Portal da Amazônia. A resistência de feirantes, trabalhadores e moradores contrapõe a metáfora ‘janelas para o rio’, que funciona como uma espécie de pensamento único na cidade, com outra metáfora, a de ‘portas para o rio’, que diz respeito à necessidade de ir e vir dos ribeirinhos, que reivindicam seu direito à cidade. O movimento de pessoas e mercadorias nos portos e redondezas configura um espaço de economia e vida popular em Belém. Esse movimento proporciona identidade aos bairros do Jurunas, Condor e Guamá e condiz com preceitos urbanísticos recomendados por autores como Jane Jacobs e Marshall Berman, que valorizam a vida cotidiana da rua. O projeto avança de forma obscura, sem qualquer critério de diálogo e transparência.

Cities and the shaping of memory in the ancient Near East

This book investigates the founding and building of cities in the ancient Near East. The creation of new cities was imagined as an ideological project or a divine intervention in the political narratives and mythologies of Near Eastern cultures, often masking the complex processes behind the social production of urban space. During the Early Iron Age (c.1200–850 BCE), Assyrian and Syro-Hittite rulers developed a highly performative official discourse that revolved around constructing cities, cultivating landscapes, building watercourses, erecting monuments and initiating public festivals. This volume combs through archaeological, epigraphic, visual, architectural and environmental evidence to tell the story of a region from the perspective of its spatial practices, landscape history and architectural technologies. It argues that the cultural processes of the making of urban spaces shape collective memory and identity as well as sites of political performance and state spectacle.

From Momentary to Historic: Rhythms in the Social Production of Urban Space, the Case of CalÇAda De Sant'Ana, Lisbon

This paper presents a study of one street, Calçada de Sant'Ana in Lisbon, Portugal. In 2007, the authors lived on that street for a month. The stay facilitated observations that together help to understand how the social and the spatial are woven together, and how seemingly very different processes, time-scales and types of actor, such as momentary human encounters and slow decay of buildings, produce a specific socio-spatial continuum, a ‘street-phenomenon’. Calçada de Sant'Ana can be characterized as a collective work, an oeuvre. Inspired by Henri Lefebvre's notion of rhythmanalysis, the paper explores how form, use and meaning are co-constitutive. Building on Doreen Massey's notion of urban places as specific articulations of both local and global, Gernot Böhme's idea that urban atmospheres concern the style and manner of the unfolding urban life, and Walter Benjamin's discussion of the porosity of space, we explore in detail a variety of moments in the social production of urban space. The study shows that an attention to urban rhythms provides important new insights in the analysis of public urban space. Calçada de Sant'Ana turns out to be a very positive example of open and inclusive contemporary public space, providing a counter-example to the dominant discourse of ‘erosion’ of its public character. Aspects of the case might be generalized as new tools of analysis and activism to create differential urban spaces elsewhere.

O real panorama da polis: conflitos na produção do espaço em favelas localizadas em bairro da elite de São Paulo

Based on the particular circumstances of the southwest region of São Paulo, this article discusses conflicts related to the social production of urban space, describing and analyzing three events in the slums located in this region. These events, treated as descriptive scenes, include: the purchase by a builder of 70 homes located in the Jardim Panorama shantytown; an eviction taking place in the Real Parque shantytown; and an uprising in the Paraisópolis shantytown. By analyzing these events, we infer that the process of evicting the poor from this region is primarily through economic coercion, made possible by the gradual process of privatization of urban management. This process is consolidated by both legality and illegality on the part of the government, the difficulty of publicizing the demands by the poorer population and the transformation of these sectors in the consumer markets.

Right to food, right to the city: Household urban agriculture, and socionatural metabolism in Managua, Nicaragua

The ‘right to the city’ has been understood as the right of urban inhabitants to produce urban spaces, and has generally drawn on Henri Lefevbre’s work on the social production of urban space. This paper examines the socioenvironmental aspects of the right to produce urban space. The aim of the paper is to draw on and contribute to the literatures on urban political ecology and the right to the city by exploring the concept of the right to urban metabolism through an analysis of everyday food production and consumption in homes in an informal settlement in Managua. The article argues that the ecologies of informal household urban agriculture (primarily the cultivation of fruit trees) are a key way that marginalised urban inhabitants in Managua appropriate and produce urban space, and consequently, demand their rights to urban metabolism. Through the production of home ecologies based on physiological necessities and cultural food practices, households simultaneously challenge their exclusion from urban spatial practices and address the increasing insecurity of access to food in Managua.

Espacio urbano y riesgo de desastres: la expansión de las urbanizaciones cerradas sobre áreas inundables de Tigre (Argentina)

El crecimiento espacial de las ciudades y de los llamados desastres "naturales" son dos temas que adquieren cada vez mayor notoriedad a nivel mundial. El trabajo parte de considerar a ambos fenómenos como productos sociales, por lo que intenta avanzar en el conocimiento sobre la articulación entre producción social del espacio urbano y de riesgo de desastres, a partir de un estudio de caso: la expansión de las urbanizaciones cerradas ocurrida desde fines del siglo XX sobre áreas inundables de Tigre (Argentina).
