Challenges in the Social and Psychological Adaptation of Ukrainian Forced Migrants (in the Context of Poland)

The dramatic changes that have taken place in Ukraine since the time of full-scale military operations have caused a fatal demographic, social and economic crisis, which has led to significant changes in people’s lifestyles, migration of a large number of Ukrainian citizens who have to adapt to the new living conditions and integrate into the receiving country. This definitely affected the social attitudes and mental states of both the forced (war) migrants and the receiving nations, who also have to adapt to coexistence with representatives of other culture. Among the main factors that hinder the social and psychological adaptation of forced migrants in the new settings are the following: language barrier, lack of communication within the Polish community, difficulties related to the legalization of stay, and working in a field unrelated to their specialization. The lack of constructive communication and interaction with local residents leads to the appearance of maladaptive feelings in forced migrants ‒ alienation, social isolation, uselessness and futility. Further development and self-realization of an individual in society depends on the result of social and psychological adaptation. A significant factor influencing one’s adjustment to a new reality is the position (active or passive) an individual adopts that is, the readiness to accept the existing situation and change one’s attitudes, behavior and way of life. This choice determines various personal strategies of adaptive behavior. Social integration of migrants is a two-way process characterized not only by adaptation (in social, economic, cultural and psychological aspects) of people to a new environment, but also by the reaction of hosting society to changes and its adaptation to migrants as well. Therefore, it is important to develop a strategy of behavior 42 | WEEReview 13 | 2024 and interaction on the basis of tolerance and mutual understanding that would satisfy both parties.

Purpose: This paper examines the changing patterns of social inequality and stratification in relation to migration, ethnicity, gender, class, and education
 Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries.
 Findings: Changing patterns of social inequality and stratification are influenced by migration, ethnicity, gender, class, and education. Migration can lead to economic disparities for immigrants, either through improved opportunities or exploitation. Ethnicity remains a significant factor, with ethnic minorities facing discrimination and limited access to resources. Gender inequality persists with disparities in pay and leadership roles, while class-based inequality continues through inheritance and income distribution. Access to quality education plays a vital role in social mobility, but disparities in resources and rising tuition costs can limit opportunities.
 Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Intersectionality theory, Human capital theory & Transnationalism theory may be used to anchor future studies on changing patterns of social inequality and stratification in relation to migration, ethnicity, gender, class, and education. Organizations and institutions should implement diversity and inclusion programs that go beyond tokenism. Develop and implement comprehensive immigration reform policies that address the rights and social integration of migrants.

 Bu çalışma halkla ilişkiler faaliyetlerinde reklam afişlerinin sosyal entegrasyon bağlamında göçmenleri Almanca öğrenmeye ve sosyal hayata katılmaya teşvik rolünü ele almaktadır. Günümüzde milyonlarca insan savaş, şiddet, açlık veya doğal afetlerden kaçtığı gibi milyonlarcası da emek göçü, eğitim göçü, yatırım göçü vs. yaparak doğduğu topraklardan çok uzaklarda yaşamına devam etmektedir. Bu insanların göç rotalarına bakıldığında günümüz göç eylemlerinin bir anlamda küresel eşitsizliğin de bir göstergesi olduğu görülmektedir. Küresel göçmenlerin sayıca artışıyla ortaya çıkan kavramlardan biri olan sosyal entegrasyon; göç eden bireylerin geldikleri ülkenin toplumuyla uyum içinde bütünlük sağlamasıdır. Almanya 1960’lı yıllardan beri çoğunluğu Türklerden oluşan milyonlarca göçmenin en çok tercih ettiği ülkelerin başında gelmektedir. Ülkede göçmenlerin sosyal entegrasyonundan sorumlu kamu kurumunun dışında yarı resmi kurumlar ve sivil toplum kuruluşları konuyla ilgili iletişim faaliyetleri yürütmektedir. Bu çalışmada, göçmenleri sosyal entegrasyona teşvik eden Alman Entegrasyon Vakfı'nın (Deutschlandstiftung Entegrasyonu) (DSI) halkla ilişkiler faaliyetlerinden Almanca öğrenmenin kilit rolünü vurgulayan yirmi yedi reklam afişinden üçü örnek olarak seçilmiştir. Bu üç reklam afişi Roland Barthes’in göstergebilim yaklaşımıyla analiz edildi. İncelenen reklam afişlerinde göçmenlerin Almanca öğrenmesi “başarı” ve “şöhret” mitiyle sunulmuştur.

Social integration of migrants from Ukraine and Belarus in Lithuania

The phenomena of migration in today’s society is not surprising, but how often do we think about immigrants and their interactions with the local population, within themes of language, culture, social life, employment and general integration. International organizations say that although basic rights and protection of immigrants is ensured in Lithuania, immigrants in our country still do not have the opportunity to participate in public life as well as they should. The aim of this article is to refresh our knowledge of migrants' own experiences with regards to social integration and their own subjective welfare, by specifically examining the two largest groups of immigrants, Ukrainians and Belarusians. For the purpose of the study, 20 semi-structured interviews were conducted, of which 10 were with Ukrainians and 10 with Belarusians. The study revealed that language is an important factor in the formation of a new identity and social integration. It was also noted that immigrants from Ukraine and Belarus have varying degrees of success entering the local labor market and they usually have to work in lower-skilled jobs. It is also worth mentioning that immigrants support their immigration efforts by way of similar culture and adaptation in their national communities, churches or social networks. Lastly, immigrants from Ukraine and Belarus are satisfied with life in Lithuania and notice positive differences compared to their country of origin, such as transparency and order in the country, a well-functioning banking and public transport system. They also note that the mentality of local Lithuanians and their own is similar, which is a development that has happened due to a shared Soviet experience and proficiency in the Russian language.

Performing Arts As A Medium For Social Integration Of Migrant With Local Community: Lesson From Indonesia

The migrants in Barito Kuala Regency developed the art of dance originating from their area. However, the art performances they show are one of the reinforcements for their social integration with the local community. This paper aims to: (1) describe the reasons for the migrants to develop their performing arts. (2) analyzing the role of performing arts as a medium for social integration of migrants with local communities. This research uses qualitative research methods and has been carried out in Sidomulyo Village and Dandan Jaya Village, Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan Province. 10 Informants were interviewed. Data was carried out by observation, in-depth interviews, and diaries and was analyzed by ethnographic analysis. This study found that (1) the reason of migrants to develop art is to always remember their original identity. (2) Art becomes a medium for social integration through (a) adapting the art of the migrant community to the art of the local community (b) Performing arts As a means of public entertainment (c) social interactions that are developed among all residents during performing arts performances. Based on the research findings, this study suggests strengthening arts that adapt local arts to strengthen social integration, especially in multi-ethnic communities.

Family Migration and Social Integration of Migrants: Evidence from Wuhan Metropolitan Area, China.

The social integration in host cities of China’s migrant population and its determinants has received much attention from researchers. However, few have directly addressed the family migration in differentiating migrants’ social integration. This study employs descriptive statistics and multivariate regression to explore the social integration across different family migration types, based on the data of China Migrants Dynamic Survey 2013 and 2017 in Wuhan metropolitan area. The findings show that the family migration in Wuhan metropolitan area is prevalent, and the central city Wuhan has advantages both in the proportion of whole-family migration and the scores of migrants’ social integration. In addition, the migrants’ family migration is significantly positively associated with their social integration, but the effect is variance in the regression models of social integration’s four dimensions. The findings reveal the Wuhan City’s leading position in promoting migrants’ social integration within the Wuhan metropolitan area. Furthermore, migration with more family members has higher levels of integration in economy and public service. This implies that the convenience provided by inflow cities’ government for family migration is crucial. To provide high-quality public services is of great significance to attract and retain migrants and then promote their overall social integration.

Sport, migration and integration in Denmark: local political responses and policies in Copenhagen

ABSTRACT Denmark in recent years has seen a significant increase in immigration. The topic has become a major political issue, due mainly to the rise of far-right political parties that advocate not only for a more restrictive immigration policy, but also for an assimilation strategy for those migrants currently resident in the country. Using the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF), the aim of this article is to analyse the role of sport policy in Copenhagen as an instrument for the social integration of migrants between 2010 and 2018. This paper focuses on female immigrants and women-only swimming, exploring the impact on policy of the interactions between national, municipal and sports club policy actors. The main findings of the research are: a) sport was identified in Copenhagen as an important vehicle for the inclusion of recent migrants into communal associationalist life and their introduction to Danish societal values and norms; b) the Municipality of Copenhagen was granted by central government considerable autonomy in interpreting their responsibilities and collaborated closely with sports clubs in the design and delivery of sports programmes related to immigrants; c) two competing advocacy coalitions were identified, one favouring inclusion through assimilation and the other integration through multiculturalism; d) the assimilationist coalition was composed of centre-right and far-right political parties. As these parties controlled the municipal sport department, it was the sports clubs that pursued a multicultural policy; and e) the issue of gender-segregated swimming was a focal issue for disputes over approaches to integration.

Social Integration of Migrants from Central Asia and other post-Soviet States (Comparative Study)

The article examines the relationship between migrants to Russia and the host society, using surveys taken in the spring of 2017 and in the autumn of 2020. According to German-speaking authors, social integration is one of the stages of forming comprehensive integration of foreigners. Public opinion surveys show that migrants from Central Asia are the most undesirable for Russians. That is why the article gives comparative study of social integration of immigrants from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan compared to other post-Soviet states (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Ukraine). The central focus is given to migrants’ self-perception of their place in the Russian society and to evaluation of quality of interpersonal interaction with the citizens. The results obtained from the study show that migrants from Central Asia are the least integrated into the host society and more oriented towards the sending state compared to migrants from other countries. Also, despite reasonable Russian language proficiency, migrants from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan communicate with the representatives of their own ethnos in every aspect of their lives more often than migrants from other Soviet republics. At the same time, they identify themselves with the citizens of Russia less frequently. The reason for such low social integration of Central Asian migrants compared to other migrant groups could be their desire to return to their homeland and that they may view migration to Russia just as a way of survival in the unfavourable conditions in their country of origin.

Intimate partner violence against women on the Colombia Ecuador border: a mixed-methods analysis of the liminal migrant experience

BackgroundIntimate partner violence (IPV) has serious long-term health and psychological consequences and is highly prevalent in Latin America and among displaced populations. Liminality - the ambiguous in-between state of individuals completing a migratory journey - represents a state of legal, economic, and physical insecurity. Through the framework of liminality, this analysis seeks to understand the unique challenges faced by displaced Colombian women in Ecuador including their experience of IPV.MethodsWe performed a secondary analysis of 15 in-depth interviews and 319 longitudinal surveys, conducted on the border of Ecuador and Colombia, following a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. We analysed interviews thematically and mapped the main themes onto complementary quantitative variables. We conducted logistic regression with identified risk and protective factors (measured at time 1) and recent IPV (measured at time 2), controlling for demographic characteristics and IPV at time 1.ResultsOur mixed-methods analysis revealed four main mechanisms by which displacement influenced the social and economic realities of Colombian women years after crossing the border, compounding their risk of IPV and limiting their ability to escape it. Lack of legal residence and documentation, violence experienced along life course and migratory continuums which increased their risk for later revictimisation, social isolation including loss of support networks and restricted mobility and lastly, financial stress.ConclusionsThis research highlights the critical importance of supporting the economic and social integration of migrants and refugees in host communities, as well as the need to carefully consider migration-related vulnerabilities in IPV prevention and response interventions. As the regional refugee crisis grows, policy makers must consider how the long-term marginalisation of refugee women contributes to their victimisation. This research also supports the idea of incorporating gender synchronised, transformative IPV prevention and response programmes into migration-related and poverty alleviation international development efforts.

The role of physical culture and sport activities in migrant integration

The relevance of the research topic consists in solving the scientific and practical problem of integrating migrants into the host community. The purpose of the research is to identify the role of physical culture and sports in the social integration of migrants. The methodology of the research is presented by the theories of assimilation of migrants with the local population; multiculturalism as the idea of the existence of a multinational state; transnationalism implemented in the conditions of globalization, informatization and digitalization of the society. The research methods used are content analysis of documents; analysis of statistical data, secondary analysis of sociological data, comparative analysis. The novelty of the research issue lies in the critical understanding of the advantages and limitations of physical training and sports as tools for integrating migrants into host communities in foreign countries. The results of the research have been defined: the role of physical training and sports activities in the process of migrants' integration based on the domestic and foreign research; the main approaches to the implementation of migration policy measures in world practice (assimilation, multiculturalism and transnationalism) as well as the assessment of its success, by using the Migrant Integration Index. The study allows us to draw a conclusion about the dual nature of the integration potential of physical culture and sports in the implementation of migration policy: on the one hand, it is a way of revealing socio-cultural capital, searching for additional opportunities for self-realization in a new socio-cultural environment, overcoming social isolation, eliminating barriers of social exclusion; on the other hand, it is a deterrent effect of migrants' age, gender, ethnicity, religion, level of education, attitude to various sports and physical activity in the countries of entry and exit on the integration process.

The EU refugee crisis as a factor of destructive influence on the policy of multiculturalism

The article examines the problem of the refugee crisis as a factor of destructive influence on the policy of multiculturalism. The causes of the refugee crisis and its features are revealed. The reasons for the departure of migrants from their countries of origin are identified, the key ones being military operations, economic and social. The grounds for the emergence of the refugee crisis in the European Union have been established.The legal status of refugees and the regulatory framework for their integration into European Society are studied. The main documents regulating this process are defined. The main signs of assimilation and multiculturalism policies are revealed. Based on this, the policy of integration of migrants into EU society, its advantages and disadvantages are analyzed.The results of modernization of the multiculturalism policy are described on the example of Germany. Special attention is paid to the existing problems that have developed since the beginning of the crisis, based on the key miscalculations of this policy. The challenges that have arisen in European Society during this time are identified.The assessment of the degree of integration of migrants into the EU society, the state of ensuring their rights and freedoms is given. The article analyzes the obstacles to the social integration of refugees into European society, their education and employment. The nature of conflict-causing factors of coexistence of the local population and refugees, as well as side threats that waves of migrants carry with them, is revealed.Recommendations are proposed for further modernization of the policy of integration of refugees into EU society. The main measures to implement this policy have been identified. In particular, the creation of a flexible system of social integration of migrants, which would provide for the implementation of measures for social assimilation, while preserving the basic principles of multiculturalism and freedom of religion.

The native-migrant gap in job satisfaction across European countries

PurposeThis paper aims to contribute to the body of research on job satisfaction as a subjective dimension of the quality of working life. Specifically, it addresses the comparison of job satisfaction between native-born and foreign-born workers in 28 European countries.Design/methodology/approachA multilevel modelling framework is used for exploring the variability associated with every hierarchical level (individuals constitute the first-level units, combinations country-activity sector are the second-level units and countries are the third-level units).FindingsThe country-specific native-migrant gap in job satisfaction displays some heterogeneity across countries when accounting for socio-demographic and job-related characteristics. Country-level factors have a significant effect on job satisfaction score of all resident workers. Nevertheless, they do not moderate significantly the effect of immigrant status on job satisfaction across countries.Research limitations/implicationsThe unavailability of data on migrants' country of origin and duration of stay in the host country prevents from exploring in more details the integration issues of migrants.Social implicationsJob satisfaction of migrant workers, as an indicator of their working conditions, is fundamental for evaluating the degree of social integration of migrants in their host countriesOriginality/valueA distinctive trait of this research is the use of the 2013 ad hoc EU-SILC module on subjective well-being, which contains subjective evaluations of the satisfaction with the job as well as with other different life domains. Further distinctive aspects are the investigation of (1) the direct effect of country-level factors on job satisfaction and (2) whether country-level factors mediate the effect of the immigrant status on job satisfaction.

Social integration of migrants across Chinese neighbourhoods

Existing studies on migrant social integration in China are often focused on urban villages. Very few have explored across different types of neighbourhood. Drawing on the 2014 China Migrants Dynamic Survey, we find that migrants who live in ‘commodity housing’ neighbourhoods have achieved a higher level of social integration in all the dimensions of socio-economic achievement, neighbourly interaction and social relationships with the city. Migrants living in urban and rural villages manage to achieve better economic integration than migrants living in factory dormitories and old neighbourhoods in the central city. However, migrants in these villages show a lower level of social integration. The findings reveal that urban and rural villages as migrant enclaves serve a stepping-stone for migrants to earn an income but do not support migrants to eventually progress into better social integration. By revealing different levels of social integration, the Chinese case seems to suggest a process of spatial assimilation through which migrants living in more mainstream and formal housing with the locals become better integrated. However, such a process does not really happen as many migrants are stuck in the informal housing of villages. That migrant enclaves demonstrate a lower level of integration suggests that a path of segmented assimilation did not exist. That is, migrants could not find a path to integrate into the city in these enclaves.

Study on Social Integration Identification and Characteristics of Migrants from “Yangtze River to Huaihe River” Project: A Time-Driven Perspective

The “Yangtze River to Huaihe River” project is another large-scale trans-basin water diversion project in China, following the South-to-North Water Division Project. The reservoir project is in the period of China’s rapid development of modernization, informatization and marketization. During this period, reservoir-induced migrants have great differences in resource endowment and development opportunities, so they show different characteristics in the integration process. In order to clarify these characteristics and formulate corresponding policies based on these characteristics to help them integrate into the society of the resettlement area as soon as possible, this paper has completed two aspects of work: First, a method for identifying social integration is proposed. Second, the characteristics of social integration of different migrant groups in different time dimensions are analyzed. This study has two important findings: First, the extent of information sources and understanding of policies has a greater impact on the social integration of migrants. The wider the source of information and the more understanding of policies, the more it helps migrants to integrate into society. Second, the social network relationship established by the female migrant group in the maintenance activities will greatly promote their social integration.

The situation of migrant children in the Hungarian and the Austrian education system: Multilingualism, interculturalism, and integration

The migration crisis of the past few years has influenced Hungary and Austria; therefore, migration, as well as its linguistic effect on society and education, and the cultural and social variation came to the front in both countries’ educational policies. Nonetheless, while Austria is a well-developed welfare country, and according to Esping-Andersen’s analysis, a conservative/corporatist welfare regime, Hungary is a post-communist developing welfare state, which is currently conservative. In terms of their divergent historical and political trajectories, immigration policy, the number of immigrants, their native language, and country of origin, the two countries present significant differences. It is controversial whether education has a crucial role in economic and social integration of migrants. Despite contextual differences, Austrian and Hungarian educational systems are confronted with challenges emerging from the presence of migrant children in education. The aim of this article is to present the Austrian and Hungarian models with regard to migrant children in formal education: at macro level to identify the educational policies applying to migrant children, analyzing the syllabuses that provide control in the consistency of education, and at micro level analyzing the implementation of these guidelines and the syllabuses in the pedagogical practice and the challenges for educational integration.

The importance of friends: social life challenges for foreign physicians in Southern Sweden

ABSTRACT The article connects the fields of work/non-work research with the research on social integration of migrants. It is based on in-depth interviews with foreign physicians in the south of Sweden which explored their work/non-work experiences and their subjective perceptions of managing work, family, social and private domains of life. Based on individual reflections of social life as experienced in the workplace, in the locations of everyday life and transnationally, the analysis does not pursue the existence and composition of social networks but focuses on non-instrumental aspects of social life and explores their significance for high-skilled migrants’ own sense of integration. The findings suggest that migrants who are privileged in terms of education and employment still face extensive challenges in the social domain of life, especially with regard to close friendships. The findings furthermore suggest that social integration is a process that is influenced by place, time and individual life trajectories and therefore cannot be truthfully accounted for by looking at the numbers and ethnic composition of a migrant’s social relations. It is the quality of relations – notably friendships – that matters most.

Barriers of Culture, Networks, and Language in International Migration: A Review

Along with the increasing pace of globalization, recent decades faced a dramatically increase in international migrant flows as well. Compared to the flows of trade, capital and knowledge, we observe that contemporaneous complex institutional differences, historical backgrounds, and individuals' diverse socio-demographic characteristics make the migrant workers' choice of destination arguably much more uncontrollable. This study shows that migration is in a complex way intertwined with culture, networks and language, (i) by reviewing related studies on the barriers of culture, networks and language in international labor mobility, and (ii) by exploring missing gaps and prospective avenues for research. Nowadays, the migration pressure on Europe and the United states has created substantial challenges, leading to an urgent need to address the economic assimilation and social integration of migrants. Against this background, we emphasize that these non-economic factors have played an increasingly critical role in shaping international migration and its future socio-economic consequences for destination countries.

To move or to stay in a migrant enclave in Beijing: The role of neighborhood social bonds

ABSTRACTThe social integration of migrants in developing countries has long been an important issue in academic research, and analyzing migrants’ intentions to stay in current migrant enclaves may shed light on how they view their prospects in host cities. Given the importance of migrant social bonds in helping to build their urban lives, this article evaluates the effect of neighborhood social bonds on migrants’ intentions to stay in migrant enclaves. Based on data collected from one of the largest migrant enclaves in Beijing in 2012, this article concludes that neighborhood social bonds, rather than residential satisfaction, act as the strongest predictor of intention to stay as well as intervening variables. However, some widely accepted moving triggers among urban residents show little effect in this study, suggesting that China’s migrants follow a different mobility decision-making process because of institutional barriers.
