The Influence of Parental Education Involvement on the Social Development Level of Adolescents: The Mediating Role of Parent-child Relationship

In this study, 302 junior high school students aged 12 to 15 were selected as the research objects to investigate the overall situation of parental education investment, parent-child relationship and social development level of junior high school students. Simultaneously, the relationship between parental education investment and parent-child relationship and adolescent social development level was investigated. The results indicate that significant differences exist in the level of social development between adolescents with high scores and those with low scores. whether it is parental education involvement or parent-child relationship. There is a significant positive correlation between parental education involvement and parent-child relationship, parental education involvement and adolescent social development, parent-child relationship and adolescent social development; among them, parent-child relationship plays a significant mediating role in the path of parental education involvement affecting adolescents ' social development. Therefore, we should increase the participation of parents in education and strengthen the construction of parent-child relationship to promote the social development of adolescents.

The Role of Fathers' Involvement in Parenting and Adolescent Social Harms: A Narrative Review

Background: In today's society, the issue of fatherhood and involvement in the upbringing of children has been emphasized. The study aimed to investigate the impact of fathers' involvement in parenting on the social victimization of adolescents. Methods: The present research utilized a narrative review methodology, with technical terms being explained at the beginning. Relevant sources were identified by conducting searches on reputable academic databases, including ISI Web of Knowledge, PubMed, Google Scholar, ProQuest, Ovid, Elsevier, SID, and Magiran, covering the period from 2000 to 2023. The search keywords encompassed various related themes, such as fatherhood, absent fathers, childrearing, adolescents, father involvement, engagement, social problems, and Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT). Compilation procedures were conducted according to the SANRA checklist. In the initial search, 162 articles were obtained. After removing duplicates and evaluating their titles and abstracts, 9 articles were selected for the review. Results: Based on the findings of this literature review, paternal involvement in child-rearing is shown to positively affect the intellectual, moral, and social development of adolescents. Conversely, the absence of a father figure has been linked to negative outcomes such as drug addiction, decreased academic performance in both school and university, anti-social attitudes, separation anxiety, aggression, feelings of insecurity, and negative thoughts in teenagers. Conclusion: The involvement of fathers in upbringing of their children fosters critical thinking and reinforces children's empowerment in making pivotal decisions, while simultaneously acting as a safeguard against social risks.

Association Between Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychopathic Traits Among Justice-Involved Adolescents.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global public health problem and is highly prevalent among justice-involved populations. Pediatric TBI is linked with long-term negative outcomes and is correlated with substance use, criminal behavior, psychiatric disorders, and disruptions in neurocognition. These same TBI correlates are evident among youth with psychopathic traits. Given ongoing neurobiological and social development in adolescence, understanding the link between psychopathic traits and TBI in justice-involved youth is critical. A sample of 263 male adolescents were recruited from a maximum-security juvenile justice facility. Using a structural equation modeling (SEM) framework, measurement invariance of psychopathic traits (TBI ±) was tested, and psychopathy scores were accounted for in terms of TBI variables (severity, age of first TBI, total number), participant's age, IQ, substance use, and internalizing psychopathology. There was evidence of strong invariance across TBI status and those with TBI had higher affective and impulsive lifestyle psychopathic traits than adolescents without TBI. The SEM indicated that TBI severity was associated with lower IQ scores, which in turn were associated with increased lifestyle/antisocial (Factor 2) psychopathic traits. Total number of TBIs was associated with higher substance use, which was associated with both increased interpersonal/affective (Factor 1) and Factor 2 psychopathic traits. These TBI variables also had indirect associations with psychopathic traits through IQ and substance use. The findings indicate that TBI is associated with psychopathic traits and suggest that disturbances in cognition and substance use may be treatment targets for youth with TBI and psychopathic traits.

Evaluation of a New Adolescent Social Communication Assessment: The Transition Pragmatics Interview.

This study evaluated the psychometric functioning of a new criterion-referenced assessment of adolescent social communication, the Transition Pragmatics Interview (TPI), based on the synthesis model of pragmatics. Two ways of interpreting item difficulty were explored: (a) as a function of the synthesis model elements of social communication ability that items were designed to assess, and (b) as a function of the developmental level required for a successful response based on an adapted situational-discourse-semantics (SDS) model (Norris & Hoffman, 1993). Thirty-seven participants aged 14-22 years completed the TPI. Responses were analyzed using Rasch analysis to evaluate the functioning of the scale and to determine item difficulty. Items were coded for the SDS developmental level required for an adequate response. The mean Rasch item difficulty for items at each SDS developmental level was analyzed for the five adapted SDS domains. Consistent with the first approach for interpreting item difficulty, TPI items varied in difficulty as a function of the element of social communication they were designed to assess (p < .001). Interpreting item difficulty based on the adapted SDS model was not supported: Items requiring higher SDS developmental levels were not more difficult than those requiring less (p = .55). The TPI responses fit the Rasch model, supporting the TPI as a unidimensional measure and supporting the use of all items together to compute a single number that summarizes the level of social communication for each examinee. Teenage rebellion is a part of social development in adolescents in order for them to develop an identity independent from their parents or guardians. Moreover, teens shape identity through revolt. This phenomenon affected also members of the Philomath Society, which was formed in 1817 at the Imperial University of Vilnius. Philomaths rebelled against the old generation, upbringing methods, weakness in the Society, idleness of youth. They were not indifferent to the political situation, so that they mutinied against the Russian Empired. The Philomath Society’s rebellion manifested in rule of the secrecy, pedagogic activity (formation of the youth associations, work as teachers), prosocial activity, language and tradition preserving. Teenage rebellion of Philomaths aimed at changing the reality, which was unacceptable.

IMPROVING SOCIAL COMPETENCES THROUGH SPORT: AN EXPLORATION OF THE EDUCATIONAL ROLE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT

Depressive and Anxiety Disorders in Adolescents. A Psycho-spiritual Approach and Statistical Contextualization

At the beginning of the third millennium, depression is under a lot of debate and specialist studies, literature, artistic manifestations and people's testimonies highlight this form of mental disorder that is growing and giving rise to complex and various problems. Depression means a state of pathological sadness and, at the same time, is a permanent negative state, an emotional pain overwhelming an individual in moments almost normal of life, but which are perceived disproportionately. Besides sadness, cognition, thought process, will and decision-making power are also impaired. Usually, depressive states do not have an organic cause, but some existential causes, linked to the absence of perception of life meaning and the connection to God.Depressive disorder is a real public health issue, with a major impact on the cognitive, psychological and social development of adolescents. Therefore, this work aims to identify, from a theoretical perspective, the factors that generate a context favoring the triggering and amplification of some forms of depressive or anxiety disorders in adolescents, and also to highlight some multidisciplinary methods of understanding and intervention proposals.

Improving Empathy and Peer Relationships in Adolescents: A Social Cognition Training Approach

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a social cognition training intervention in enhancing empathy and peer relationships among adolescents. By focusing on these critical social and emotional competencies, the research sought to provide empirical evidence supporting the utility of targeted interventions in developmental psychology. Methodology: Employing a randomized controlled trial design, the study involved 30 adolescents aged 13-16 years, randomly assigned to either an experimental group undergoing a structured social cognition training program or a control group receiving no intervention. The program comprised 10 sessions, each lasting 75 minutes, focusing on developing empathy, understanding peer dynamics, and enhancing interpersonal skills. Empathy and peer relationships were measured at baseline, immediately post-intervention, and at a three-month follow-up using standardized tools, with data analysis conducted via SPSS-27 using ANOVA with repeated measurements and Bonferroni post-hoc tests. Findings: Significant improvements were observed in the experimental group, with empathy scores increasing from a pre-test mean of 55.92 (SD = 13.37) to a follow-up mean of 63.95 (SD = 14.44), and peer relationship scores rising from a pre-test mean of 51.71 (SD = 9.66) to a follow-up mean of 58.99 (SD = 10.21). The control group showed negligible changes. Statistical analysis revealed significant effects of time and group, as well as time × group interactions for both empathy (Time × Group: F = 8.30, p &lt; 0.01) and peer relationships (Time × Group: F = 7.33, p &lt; 0.01). Conclusion: The social cognition training intervention significantly enhanced empathy and peer relationships among adolescents, underscoring the potential of such programs to foster essential social skills and emotional understanding. Parental Burnout and Prosocial Behavior among Chinese Adolescents: The Role of Empathy.

Parental burnout refers to exhaustion caused by the parenting role. This devastating negative emotion can have repercussions for adolescent social development. Nevertheless, much remains unclear about the association between parental burnout and adolescent prosocial behavior and the potential mechanisms underlying this relationship. Based on theoretical and empirical evidence, the current study examined the relationship between parental burnout and adolescent prosocial behavior by using a sequential mediation model that included both parental empathy and adolescent empathy as potential mediators. A total of 488 parent-adolescent dyads (for adolescents: 45.7% men, 54.3% women, Mage = 15.28 ± 1.67 years; for parents: 36.5% fathers, 63.5% mothers, Mage = 41.30 ± 3.79 years) completed questionnaires regarding demographics, social desirability, parental burnout, parental empathy, adolescent empathy, and adolescent prosocial behavior. After controlling for demographic covariates and social desirability, the results showed that parental burnout had a negative effect on adolescent-reported prosocial behavior through parental cognitive empathy and adolescent other-oriented empathy (adolescent cognitive empathy and empathic concern) sequentially. These findings contribute to our understanding of the role of parental burnout as a family environmental factor detrimental to the positive functioning of adolescents through parental reactions to their children's emotions and children's own social competence.

This study aims to understand more deeply about the influence of the social environment on the personality of adolescents in the vuca era. This research was made using a descriptive method and this study had the aim of analyzing and understanding the impact of environmental influences on the personality of adolescents in the vuca era. As time goes by, there are many changes in the nature and character of teenagers in this vuca era. In the social development of adolescents, peers play an important role. the role of peers towards adolescents is mainly related to attitudes, interests, and behavior. Integrity over fidelity: transformational lessons from youth participatory action research to nurture SEL with adolescents.

Much has been written about social and emotional learning (SEL) and its positive impact on young people's academic and life outcomes, yet most of this research is based in early childhood and elementary settings. SEL programming for adolescents has shown mixed results, with many programs proving to be largely ineffective or even showing slightly negative impacts for some youth. Adherence to scripted SEL curricula, or "fidelity" to the program components, is often seen by young people to be "lame", inauthentic, and condescending, failing to connect to the topics and issues that feel most critical to them in this stage of their development. For all students, and especially for those whose identities have been systematically marginalized or oppressed by the dominant culture, SEL programming that fails to explicitly address these experiences of injustice often feels inauthentic and out of touch for youth. Therefore, effective implementation of SEL for adolescents is likely to require skillful adaptation and responsiveness to the identities, interests, and motivations of students by educators. In this case, effective SEL may look less like fidelity to a specific set of scripts, sessions, or activities, but rather a commitment to the wholeness of a set of core principles, relationships, and opportunities for adolescent exploration and leadership/empowerment, or what we will call integrity of implementation. In this paper, we present one promising approach to adolescent social and emotional development - youth participatory action research (YPAR) - and the ways in which studying the YPAR process (in addition to the research topics selected by youth) can provide key insights into the social and emotional learning and development of youth.

Dating and friendships in adolescence: Variation across same-sex and other-sex romantic partners.

This research examined associations between dating and number of friends for rural adolescents with same-sex and other-sex dating partners using longitudinal sociometric data (N = 2826; 55% female, 87% White, mean age = 14 at baseline). In multilevel models assessing within-person change, boys gained female friends when they were in same-sex romantic relationships, compared to when they were single. In contrast, girls in same-sex relationships lost female friends and gained male friends. Adolescents in other-sex romantic relationships gained same-sex friends compared to when they were single. Results advance understanding of adolescent social and sexual development, suggesting that sexual minority adolescents find allies when dating but may struggle to maintain same-sex friendships.

THE ROLE OF FATHER INVOLVEMENT IN SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT OF FEMALE ADOLESCENTS

Previous research has shown that this process of social adaptation is related to the process of parenting and its relationship with parents. In parenting, of course, there is not only the role of the mother but there is the role of the father who participates in the parenting process. This study aims to determine the role of father involvement in teen girls' adjustment. The study used quantitative methods with purposive sampling technique methods. The participants were 145 female adolescents, aged 12-15 years, who had fathers living together. The instruments used in this study are the scale of social adjustment compiled from the theory of Schneiders and the scale of Father involvement, from Risnawati, Fihadinata, and Wardhni. Data analysis using simple regression. The results showed that there was a relationship between Father Involvement and Social Adjustment in teen girls with R = 0.240, p (0.000) &lt;(0.05), which showed that father involvement played a role of 24% in the social adjustment of teen girls. This research presents a new paradigm that fathers have a significant role in the social development of adolescents, especially teen girls.

Pengaruh Pola Asuh Orangtua terhadap Perkembangan Sosial pada Masa Remaja di SMP Negeri 17 Kota Jambi

This study is based on the difference in child development of children based on parenting patterns. The purpose of this study is to reveal the level of parenting, and reveal the level of social development of teenagers in SMP Negeri 17 Jambi city and revealed the influence of parenting pattern of social development in adolescence. In this study are limited to 1) the level of social development in teenagers 2) students who have parents (father and mother) work 3) research subjects to students of class VIII SMP Negeri 17 Jambi city. Social development is the achievement of maturity in social relationships. While the parent's pattern works is a parent way in guiding, treating and educating children despite the occupational work. How parents are parenting without leaving her job. This type of research is quantitative with expost facto method. Data collection techniques are using questionnaire and sampling technique using total sampling with sample amount of 80 students. Based on the results of the study showed that there was a significant influence between variables X and variable Y. The influence was evidenced by the value of the sig. 0.05 which shows there is an influence between variables. At the same time, the value of the counter is 0,170 which is interpreted quite strongly. Therefore cooperation between teachers and parents will be well in order to be able to equalize and guide the direction of child's social development.

The Relationship between the Application of Social Distancing and the Achievement of Adolescent Social Development Tasks During the COVID-19 Pandemic at Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Junior High School Medan

The phenomenon in the field during the COVID-19 pandemic that restricts students from carrying out activities in schools, conducting online learning which has now begun to do limited face-to-face learning while still carrying out social distancing rules so that there are still teenagers who have not been able to solve their problems correctly. This results in the task of adolescent social development needing to be improved. This study aims to identify whether or not there is a relationship between the application of social distancing and the achievement of adolescent development tasks during the COVID-19 pandemic at SMP Kemala Bhayangkari 1 Medan. This research design is descriptive quantitative using Non-Probability Sampling (Purposive Sampling) technique. That is, the sample is selected according to what the researcher wants. The results were that teenagers who implemented social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic at Kemala Bhayangkari Junior High School were categorized as obedient as 38 teenagers (57.6 %) and 35 teenagers (53%). The conclusion is that there is a significant relationship between the direction of a positive relationship and a reasonably good strength between social distancing and the achievement of adolescent social development tasks. This means that in the COVID-19 pandemic, teenagers who obediently apply social distancing can achieve their social development tasks quite well. This can mean that some teenagers must still achieve their developmental tasks well. It is recommended that teenagers continue to learn to understand the importance of implementing social distancing and achieving the tasks of adolescent social development that must be realized properly and optimally so that they can adapt to their surrounding environment.

Voices of Young Deaf Adults: Supporting Adolescent Social Capital Development.

For most young people, social capital plays an important role in transitioning to postsecondary education and employment. For youth who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), social capital can mitigate negative effects of challenges they will likely encounter after high school. In phase 2 of a two-phase qualitative study in Australia, we investigated DHH young adults' perspectives on how DHH adolescents could best be supported to develop and use social capital to benefit their postschool transition. Nine university students whose primary communication mode was spoken language participated in semistructured interviews, discussing practical ways educators and families could assist DHH high school students. We close by recommending ways schools and families can facilitate social capital development of DHH adolescents in preparation for postsecondary education and employment. Importantly, this research gives voice to young DHH adults with the objective of improving DHH adolescents' outcomes.

Parenting is genetically influenced: What does that mean for research into child and adolescent social development?

AbstractIndividual differences in child and adolescent social development are due to a combination of variation in genetic propensity and environmental conditions. That is, variation in social domains like bullying‐victimization, loneliness and pro‐ and antisocial behaviour is genetically influenced to a substantial extent. That is not to say that social contexts also do not play an important role in shaping social development. Indeed, parenting and parent–child relationship quality have been associated with various aspects of social development. What complicates matters is that environmental conditions – including parenting – are under genetic influence as well. Genetic influence on parenting has not received sufficient attention in the literature on social development although it likely biases estimates of parental effects on offspring social development. To change this situation, I review recent twin and molecular research on genetic influence on parenting and discuss why genetically‐informed studies improve and enrich contemporary research into social development. The aim of this topic review is to provide an accessible introduction to genetics of parenting and encourage genetically‐informed research into social development.

The moderating role of neighborhood social cohesion on the relationship between early mother-child attachment security and adolescent social skills: Brief report.

Social skill is a critical asset for adolescents, and early mother-child attachment is an essential contributor to their development. While less secure mother-child attachment is a known risk factor for adolescent social development, the protective factor of neighborhood context in buffering this risk is still not well understood. This study used longitudinal data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (n = 1,876). Adolescent social skills (at age 15) were examined as a function of early attachment security and neighborhood social cohesion (age 3). Children with higher mother-child attachment security at age three had higher adolescent social skills at age 15. The findings show that there was an interaction effect such that neighborhood social cohesion buffered the relationship between mother-child attachment security and adolescent social skills. Our study highlights that early mother-child attachment security can be promotive for cultivating adolescent social skills. Furthermore, neighborhood social cohesion can be protective among children with lower mother-child attachment security.

Uncertainty about others’ trustworthiness increases during adolescence and guides social information sampling

Adolescence is a key life phase for developing well-adjusted social behaviour. An essential component of well-adjusted social behaviour is the ability to update our beliefs about the trustworthiness of others based on gathered information. Here, we examined how adolescents (n = 157, 10–24 years) sequentially sampled information about the trustworthiness of peers and how they used this information to update their beliefs about others’ trustworthiness. Our Bayesian computational modelling approach revealed an adolescence-emergent increase in uncertainty of prior beliefs about others’ trustworthiness. As a consequence, early to mid-adolescents (ages 10–16) gradually relied less on their prior beliefs and more on the gathered evidence when deciding to sample more information, and when deciding to trust. We propose that these age-related differences could be adaptive to the rapidly changing social environment of early and mid-adolescents. Together, these findings contribute to the understanding of adolescent social development by revealing adolescent-emergent flexibility in prior beliefs about others that drives adolescents’ information sampling and trust decisions.

Understanding the Dynamics of the Developing Adolescent Brain Through Team Science.

One of the major goals for research on adolescent development is to identify the optimal conditions for adolescents to grow up in a complex social world and to understand individual differences in these trajectories. Based on influential theoretical and empirical work in this field, achieving this goal requires a detailed understanding of the social context in which neural and behavioral development takes place, along with longitudinal measurements at multiple levels (e.g., genetic, hormonal, neural, behavioral). In this perspectives article, we highlight the promising role of team science in achieving this goal. To illustrate our point, we describe meso (peer relations) and micro (social learning) approaches to understand social development in adolescence as crucial aspects of adolescent mental health. Finally, we provide an overview of how our team has extended our collaborations beyond scientific partners to multiple societal partners for the purpose of informing and including policymakers, education and health professionals, as well as adolescents themselves when conducting and communicating research.
