An Analysis of Social Values in the Silent Child Film and Its Relevance to Characteristics of a Teacher’s Social Competence

Today the presence of mass media has a great influence on society. One of the mass media that provides a function in providing entertainment to the public is film. Film is one of the communication media in conveying a message to a group of people that is audio-visual. This study aims to find out the social values contained in the film The Silent Child and to find out the relevance of social values in the film The Silent Child with the characteristics of a teacher's social competence. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach. This research method is descriptive and included in library research, because the main source of data for this research is the silent child film. The data collection technique in this study was by means of observation, namely observing and watching every scene of the film The Silent Child carefully. The results of this study are social values of affection, namely family, loyalty, care, and there are social values of responsibility, namely possession, discipline and empathy in the film The Silent Child. The relevance of the social values in the silent child film with the characteristics of a person's social competence, namely first, empathy and polite communication, second, knowledge of human relationships, and third, mastering social psychology.

Project-based learning as a means of forming leadership qualities in senior preschool children

The relevance of this research is determined by the modern demands of Ukrainian society for the formation of motivated, responsible citizens who can successfully fulfil leadership roles. The aim of the study was to find an answer to the question of how project-based learning contributes to the development of leadership qualities in older preschool children. The research employed structural-functional, terminological, humanistic, genetic, activity-functional, and competency-based approaches, as well as general scientific logical methods (analysis, the unity of induction and deduction, modelling, and systematisation). Leadership qualities (independence, initiative, creativity, responsibility, communicativeness, organisational skills, partnership, empathy) were defined as components of leadership as a child’s social competence. It is shown that project-based learning involves the organisation of children’s activities to create a project, which is based on the need to solve a life problem, achieve a certain goal, to obtain a specific result through the sequential solution of current tasks. Project-based learning aligns with the demands of the modern age, expanding the space for children’s creativity, stimulating thinking, boosting motivation, and enabling educators and children to be partners, avoiding displays of dominance. Project-based learning successfully fosters leadership qualities such as communicativeness, organisational skills, partnership, and empathy in senior preschool children, as it is built on group interaction with its inherent phenomena of role distribution, communication, and mutual understanding. By modelling the process of solving real-life problems during the project, children develop leadership qualities such as independence, initiative, creativity, and responsibility. The specific capabilities of project-based learning in developing leadership qualities lie in providing opportunities for children to exhibit leadership qualities in interactions with both peers and adults; fostering various types of leadership (communicative and business, formal and informal, etc.) and the acquisition of different leadership roles (organiser, expert, idea generator, communicator); and preventing “negative” leader traits such as arrogance, dominance, and egocentrisms

Effectiveness of Teaching and Professionalism of Islamic Education Teachers from the Perspective of Educational Psychology

This study discusses the effectiveness of teaching and the professionalism of Islamic Religious Education teachers from the perspective of educational psychology. Islamic Religious Education, taught at various educational levels, has unique characteristics and content compared to other subjects. Islamic Religious Education teaching emphasizes spiritual and social attitudes, requiring effective teaching approaches. Islamic Religious Education teachers must possess professionalism that includes professional, pedagogical, personal, and social competencies. Teacher professionalism is directly related to their ability to teach effectively, which impacts students' academic achievement. Effective teaching involves a deep understanding of the material, selection of teaching strategies, thorough planning, as well as skills in classroom management, student motivation, and the use of technology. This study uses a literature review method to examine relevant literature on Islamic Religious Education teaching and teacher professionalism, identifying psychological elements that support effective teaching. The results show that professional Islamic Religious Education teachers are those who master various aspects of teaching and the psychological skills needed to create an effective and conducive learning environment.

The Development of Raya-In: Learning Media Based on Smart Apps Creator to Improve Primary School Social Science Learning

Technology-based learning media in social science are not readily available in primary schools. Meanwhile, learning media, especially technology-based, supports social science competencies for primary school students. This study aimed to develop learning media, named Raya-In (Ragam Budaya Indonesia), based on Smart Apps Creator to improve the social science learning of fourth-grade students in SDN Kangkung 01 within the Indonesian cultural diversity theme. This study used the Borg and Gall model design, which consisted of 8 stages: potential and problem analysis, data collection, product design, product validation, revision, small-scale trial, large-scale trial, and final product. The study involved media experts and content experts to validate the media. The subjects were fourth-grade students of SDN Kangkung 1 (n=39). Data was collected by observation, interview, pretest, questionnaire, documentation, and posttest. The final result showed that Raya-In passed the media and content experts' evaluation and revision processes. The media and content experts gave high scores in the qualified category. The Pretest, posttest, T-test, and N-gain tests showed that Raya-In supported social science learning. The study aligned with learning in the current era, using technology-based media. Raya-In development based on Smart Apps Creator was validated to support social science learning in primary school.

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY IN ADOLESCENTS WITH SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a prevalent condition among adolescents, characterized by an intense and persistent fear of social situations or performance, which results in significant distress and impairment in daily activities. Adolescents with SAD often avoid social interactions, which can negatively affect their academic, social and emotional development. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been widely recognized as an effective approach to treating SAD, offering practical strategies to reduce anxiety symptoms and improve social functioning. This abstract will explore the effectiveness of CBT in adolescents with social anxiety disorder, highlighting the main techniques used and the clinical outcomes observed. The aim of this paper is to review and evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of adolescents with social anxiety disorder. The aim is to analyze the main techniques of CBT, the mechanisms by which it promotes anxiety reduction and the results of clinical studies that show its effectiveness. In addition, the challenges and specific considerations in applying CBT to this age group will be discussed. This literature review aims to analyze the effectiveness of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in the treatment of social anxiety in adolescents. To this end, references from relevant studies and meta-analyses were selected and reviewed, covering various approaches and results related to the topic. The selection of references was based on the relevance and impact of the publications in the field of psychotherapy and social anxiety. CBT is a form of psychotherapy based on identifying and modifying dysfunctional patterns of thought and behavior. In the context of SAD in adolescents, CBT aims to help patients recognize and restructure irrational beliefs about themselves and social situations, develop appropriate social skills and reduce avoidance of social interactions. With this in mind, the main CBT techniques include cognitive restructuring, gradual exposure and social skills training. Cognitive restructuring involves helping adolescents to identify negative automatic thoughts and replace them with more realistic and balanced interpretations. Gradual exposure consists of exposing adolescents, in a controlled and progressive way, to feared social situations, allowing them to face their fears and reduce the associated anxiety response. Social skills training focuses on developing social competencies, such as initiating and maintaining conversations, asking and answering questions, and dealing with criticism and rejection in an assertive manner. Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of CBT in reducing SAD symptoms in adolescents. Research indicates that adolescents who receive CBT show a significant decrease in levels of social anxiety, improved quality of life and greater participation in social and school activities. For example, a study conducted by Masia Warner et al. (2005) showed that adolescents who participated in a group CBT program had a notable reduction in social anxiety symptoms compared to a control group. Another study by Beidel, Turner and Morris (2000) showed that individual CBT resulted in substantial improvements in adolescents’ social anxiety and social functioning. Despite the promising results, the application of CBT to adolescents with SAD presents specific challenges. Adherence to treatment can be hampered by adolescents’ resistance to engaging in therapy sessions and facing feared social situations. In addition, parental involvement and coordination with schools are important components for successful treatment, as social and environmental support is crucial for the generalization of therapeutic gains. Therefore, cognitive-behavioral therapy has proven to be an effective approach for treating adolescents with social anxiety disorder. Cognitive restructuring techniques, gradual exposure and social skills training are key to helping adolescents overcome their fears and improve their social functioning. Clinical studies provide robust evidence that CBT can significantly reduce SAD symptoms and improve quality of life for adolescents. However, it is essential to consider the challenges specific to this age group, including resistance to treatment and the need for support from parents and schools. With a careful and collaborative approach, CBT can provide lasting benefits for adolescents with social anxiety disorder, promoting their emotional and social well-being.

The power of routines: Impact of parent-grandparent coparenting relationship quality on post-lockdown child adjustment over the COVID-19 pandemic in China

Child routines and coparenting relationships are respectively recognized in past literature as valid predictors of child adjustment, representing structured daily living and source of support in children’s lives. Under the difficult times of the COVID-19 pandemic, established family processes were shaken by social and mental challenges, which lacked relevant literature regarding the working mechanism in the Chinese cultural context, where parent-grandparent coparenting families commonly reside. The current longitudinal study explores the role of child routines in the effect of mother-grandmother coparenting relationship quality on child adjustment over the period of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. The study collected data from 163 mother-grandmother coparenting families before, during, and after the pandemic lockdown in Beijing, China, in a one-year span. The results showed that the consistency of child routines during the pandemic mediated the effect of mothers’ perceived coparenting relationship quality before the pandemic on child social competence after the lockdown, but not on child behavioral and emotional problems. Grandmother’s perceived coparenting relationship quality before the pandemic negatively predicted behavioral and emotional problems after the lockdown, while no indirect effects were found. The current study reiterates the critical role of routine maintenance in the coparenting context on child social-emotional development, particularly when other parts of daily lives were disturbed. Also, separately examining mothers’ and grandmothers’ perceived coparenting relationship quality validates the idea that caregivers played different roles in the family, resulting in disparities in child development mechanisms.

Examining the Link Between Social Affect and Visual Exploration of Cute Stimuli in Autistic Children.

Baby schema refers to physical features perceived as cute, known to trigger attention, induce positive emotions, and prompt social interactions. Given the reduced visual attention to social stimuli observed in individuals on the autism spectrum, the current study examines whether the sensitivity to baby schema is also affected. We expected that the looking time towards cute-featured stimuli would vary with symptom severity levels and would be associated with social affect. Ninety-four children (31 typically developing; 63 diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder - ASD) aged 20-83 months (M = 49.63, SD = 13.59) completed an eye-tracking visual exploration task. Autistic participants were separated into two groups based on symptom severity: children with high autism severity symptoms (HS ASD; N = 23) and low-moderate autism symptoms (LMS ASD; N = 40). Animals and neutral objects were simultaneously presented on the screen along with either human babies (condition 1) or adults (condition 2). The results indicated that visual attention oriented to cute-featured stimuli varied with autism symptom severity: only LMS and TD groups spend more time looking at cute-featured stimuli (babies; animals) than neutral objects. Moreover, children with higher severity in the social affect domain spent less time on the stimuli depicting cute than non-cute stimuli. These findings suggest that autism symptom severity and social skills are linked to variations in visual attention to cute stimuli. Implications of baby schema sensitivity are discussed in relation to the development of social competencies and play, responsiveness to robot-based interventions, as well as appraised relevance in autistic children.

Exploring Links Between Social Competence, Immigrant Background, and Children’s Preschool Adjustment

ABSTRACT Research Findings: In the present study, we investigated the roles of children’s social competence and immigrant background in the prediction of the quality of children’s relationships with peers and teachers and school adjustment. Participants were N = 212 children (M age = 58.32 months, SD = 10.72; n = 98 with an immigrant background) and their teachers (two per class). One teacher in each class assessed children’s social competence and behavior problems, whereas the other rated the quality of their attachment relationships with the children and their adaptation to school. Social acceptance was assessed via peer sociometric nominations. Among the results, children with an immigrant background evidenced greater conflict and dependence in their relationships with teachers, poorer social acceptance, and less pleasure in school. Among children with an immigrant background, externalizing behaviors were associated with conflict in relationships with teachers, whereas internalizing behaviors were associated with dependence. Practice or Policy: The study highlights how social behaviors and immigrant background can affect the quality of attachment relationships with teachers in the preschool classroom.

Empathy and Socio-Emotional Competencies: The Perception of Portuguese Adolescents in Today’s Changing Environment

According to the literature, recent world events seem to play a significant influence in the acquisition and upgrowth of empathy and socio-emotional competencies (SEC), especially in adolescents. In this study we sought to assess the level of socio-emotional competencies and interpersonal reactivity of Portuguese adolescents in today’s context and analyze differences due to sex, relationship status, residence, and educational level on the dimensions of inter-personal reactivity and socio-emotional competencies. Participants were 230 adolescents of both sexes, living in Portugal, with ages between 16 and 18 years old, mostly female, with a secondary educational level, living in an urban area, and not in a relationship. An online questionnaire was applied using the Social and Emotional Competencies (SEC-Q) scale and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI). The results were that adolescents had an above-average global interpersonal reactivity, with empathic concern and perspective-taking presenting the higher values. Adolescents showed a medium-high average level of SEC, with the highest domains being self-awareness, social awareness, and pro-social behavior. Girls showed significantly more interpersonal reactivity in empathic concern, personal distress, and fantasy, and boys presented more self-awareness. As for the relationship status, adolescents not in a relationship manifested more personal distress, while those in a relationship presented higher values in all dimensions of SEC. Neither residence, nor educational level, presented significant main effects. These results can contribute to thinking about youth protection policies and designing more appropriate interventions to promote well-being in this crucial period of life, especially in times of change.

OCIAL COMPETENCE OF 5TH-FORM STUDENTS WITH NORMATIVE AND DELAYED MENTAL DEVELOPMENT

The article presents a theoretical basis for studying the social competence of adolescents as a complex feature including three groups of competencies: social-cognitive, social-behavioural and social-emotional. The author describes the results of an experimental assessment of the social competence in 5th grade students with normative and delayed mental development. General trends are highlighted, and features specific to delayed development are characterised.

Diagnostic Evaluation of the Contribution of Complementary Training Subjects in the Self-Perception of Competencies in Ethics, Social Responsibility, and Sustainability in Engineering Students

Higher education institutions, as organizations that transform society, have a responsibility to contribute to the construction of a sustainable and resilient world that is aware of the collateral effects of technological advances. This is the initial phase of a research that aims to determine whether subjects in the complementary training area have a significant effect on ethical, social responsibility, and sustainability (ERS) competencies in engineering students at a public higher education institution (HEI). To this end, a quantitative approach was used, adopting a descriptive comparative cross-sectional design and applying a self-perception instrument to a population of 418 students in the first and last semesters of engineering undergraduate programs. As a result, it was found that students that took subjects in the complementary area did not show significant development in social responsibility and sustainability competencies but did in ethical dimensions. Furthermore, in the triad of ERS competencies, there was a significant difference in students over 36 years of age, suggesting that time and academic experience contribute to a greater understanding and application of ethical and moral principles. These results support the idea that ethics and social responsibility are the pillars of sustainability. The findings highlight the importance of intervening in these subjects and complementing them with educational strategies that promote the continuous development of ERS competencies throughout the entire training itinerary, not only in complementary subjects, but as cross-cutting components of all specific engineering discipline subjects.

Family Perceptions About the Methodology of the “We All Are Campus” Training Program

<p style="text-align:justify">The transition to adulthood involves not only the acquisition of professional skills but also the development of social and emotional competencies that enable individuals to fully integrate into society. The educational program "We all are campus" of the University of Murcia focuses on preparing young people with intellectual disabilities for the ultimate goal of employment. In this study, 30 family members or guardians of people with intellectual disabilities (PcDI) participated and were consulted about their perceptions of this educational program. The research was conducted using a mixed qualitative methodology, adopting a case study approach. The main results indicate that the training received by the students improves aspects such as their interpersonal relationships and development. In addition, it is relevant to highlight that the family members emphasize an increase in maturity and the knowledge of the people with intellectual disabilities who attended the program "We all are campus". It is concluded that there are several aspects that are relevant to the families, among them, the optimism and support that their relatives need in the face of the uncertainty of their future.</p>

Transformational Leadership Training for Vocational School Principals in Ponorogo District : Strengthening Professional Learning Communities

This community service aims to improve the social competence of school principals through transformational leadership training to encourage professional learning communities in the Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity era. The method used in this community service used an IGROW- based coaching approach. The target participants of the training consisted of principals and vice principals of vocational schools in Ponorogo District who were accompanied by coaches from the field of education management with expertise in transformational leadership and educational organizations. The evaluation of this training was conducted using questionnaires. The data collected from these instruments were then analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of this activity showed that this transformational leadership model training was carried out well and smoothly so that the targets and outcomes of this community service activity could be achieved. Participants were active in conveying and elaborating on the leadership problems faced in their schools. The analysis of the training implementation evaluation data showed that principals were highest in applying the inspirational motivation aspect of transformational leadership. This aspect of inspirational motivation could include the principal's ability to inspire and motivate staff and teachers to achieve the school's vision and goals. This indicates the importance of the principal's role in fostering a positive work environment and motivating their team to achieve better.

The Influence Of Employee Performance Competence On The Indonesian Coast Guard Ships

This research aims to determine (1) the influence of intellectual competence, emotional competence and social competence of employees on employee performance and, (2) the most dominant factors influencing employee performance on the State Ships of the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency or Indonesian Coast Guard (KN Bakamla RI) in 2023. There are the diverse competencies possessed by Bakamla employees who serve on the Republic of Indonesia's KN Bakamla cause less than optimal organizational performance so that an effort is needed to fill this gap. This research is mix method research, namely a combination of quantitative methods and qualitative methods. Data was collected using the methods (1) interviews, (2) documentation, and (3) questionnaires. Next, the data was processed and analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis, SPSS version 22 program and descriptive analysis. The results of the research show that employee competency influences employee performance at KN Bakamla RI, both partially and simultaneously. Partially, intellectual competence has a partial influence of 76.6% on performance, then emotional competence has a partial influence of 58.3% on performance, and social competence has a partial influence of 62.8% on performance. Simultaneously, intellectual competence, emotional competence, and social competence have a large influence on 62.3% of employee performance. There needs to be regular competency development so that employees can develop their competencies to further improve performance. This research was conducted in April-May 2024.

Wanting to matter and learning to care: A neurodevelopmental window of opportunity for (Pro) social learning?

Wanting to matter—to feel socially recognized, appreciated, and capable of actions that benefit others—represents a fundamental motivation in human development. The motivational salience of mattering appears to increase in adolescence. Evidence suggests this is related to pubertal increases in the incentive salience for gaining social value and personal agency. This can provide a useful heuristic for understanding motivational proclivities (i.e. wanting to matter) that influence action-outcome learning as young adolescents are exploring and learning how to navigate increasingly complex social and relational environments. Adolescence also brings new capacities, motives, and opportunities for learning to care about and contribute to the benefit of others. Together, these create a window of opportunity: a sensitive period for learning to gain salient feelings of mattering through caring prosocial actions and valued societal contributions. Successfully discovering ways of mattering by doing things that matter to others may contribute to formative socio-emotional learning about self/other. Advances in understanding these social and relational learning processes and their neurodevelopmental underpinnings can inform strategies to improve developmental trajectories of social competence and wellbeing among adolescents growing up in a rapidly changing and increasingly techno-centric world.

Currently, the importance of extracurricular activities in the educational process of students is considered great. Various types of activities create conditions for the comprehensive development of students and active participation in public life. This article discusses the benefits of their extracurricular activities and describes in detail the formation of students’ social competencies using examples. Activities that require leadership develop students’ organizational and leadership skills. In the future, they can become successful leaders in their social and professional lives. Overcoming challenges in activities and learning from failures increases students’ resilience and psychological stability. This prepares them for various life challenges. And sports activities improve students’ physical fitness and strengthen their health. This improves their overall quality of life and develops healthy habits.

ASD-similar social behaviour scores affect stimulus generalization in family dogs

Generalization, the tendency to respond in the same way to different but similar stimuli, is one of the main cognitive abilities that make category formation possible and thus is a prerequisite for efficiency in learning. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience pervasive difficulty with producing generalized responses across materials, people, places, and contexts. Increasing evidence suggests that “ASD-like” social impairments appear endogenously and spontaneously in family dogs providing a high-validity model for understanding the phenotypic expression of human ASD. The present study aims to further investigate the dog model of ASD by the approach of searching for analogues in dogs showing “ASD-like” social impairments of cognitive phenomena in humans specific to ASD, specifically impairments of generalization abilities. We have tested 18 family dogs with formerly established “ASD-like” behaviour scores (F1, F2, F3) in a generalization task involving three conditions (size, colour and texture). We found a significant association between F1 scores and test performance as well as improvement during testing sessions. Our study provides further support for the notion that dogs with lower social competence—similarly to humans with ASD—exhibit attentional and perceptual abnormalities, such as being sensitive to minor changes to a non-adaptive extent.

Full and Partial Facial Affect Recognition in Pediatric Brain Tumour Survivors and Typically Developing Children Following COVID-19 Pandemic.

Affect recognition has emerged as a potential mechanism underlying the social competence challenges experienced by pediatric brain tumour survivors (PBTSs). However, many social interactions were altered during the pandemic, with the widespread use of masking potentially impacting affect recognition abilities. Here, we examine affect recognition in PBTSs and typically developing youth (TD) after the onset of the global pandemic. Twenty-three PBTSs and 24 TD between 8 and 16 years old were recruited and completed two performance-based affect recognition tasks (full and partial facial features) and a self-reported questionnaire on mask exposure in their social interactions. Their parents completed parent proxy questionnaires on their child's social adjustment and sociodemographics. The scores between the PBTSs and TD did not differ significantly in full (t(45) = 1.33, p = 0.19, d = 0.39, 95% CI [-0.69, 3.40]) or partial (t(37.36) = 1.56, p = 0.13, d = 0.46, 95% CI [-0.47, 3.60]) affect recognition, suggesting similar affect recognition between the two groups. These skills were also not significantly correlated with social adjustment or mask exposure (p > 0.05). However, the combined sample had significantly better scores in affect recognition when exposed to partial facial cues versus full. Additionally, participants obtained lower scores on a measure of full facial affect recognition and higher scores on a measure of partial affect recognition compared to pre-pandemic data. The pandemic may have influenced affect recognition across youth, underscoring the importance of further research into its lasting impact on the social competence of youth.

Social and Emotional Learning Interventions for Preadolescents and Adolescents: Assessing the Evidence Base.

The social and emotional learning (SEL) framework is widely recognized as being effective for developing social and emotional competencies among students of all ages. However, the evidence for specific intervention models with older student populations is less established. The objective of this systematic review was to rate the evidence supporting the effectiveness of SEL interventions aimed at improving mental health outcomes among preadolescents and adolescents. A search of major databases, gray literature, and evidence base registries was conducted to identify studies published from 2008 to 2022 that assessed the effects of SEL interventions on mental health outcomes among students ages 10-19 years. The authors rated the evidence for SEL interventions as high, moderate, or low based on established rating criteria. In total, 25 articles reporting on 17 original research studies were reviewed. Sixteen intervention models were assessed, with 11 resulting in improved mental health symptoms; however, no intervention was evaluated in a large enough number of studies to surpass a low evidence rating. Some studies reported cost benefits and high effectiveness of an intervention with students from diverse racial-ethnic or low socioeconomic backgrounds. SEL interventions can improve mental health outcomes among preadolescents and adolescents. Additional research is needed to strengthen the evidence base for specific intervention models.

Pengaruh Kompetensi Sosial Guru Terhadap Proses Pembelajaran: Studi Kualitatif Di Kelas 5 SDN Batukali

Social competence is the ability of teachers to communicate and interact with students during the learning process. This competence is very important so that teachers can be good examples for students, help students develop individuals who are full of empathy, attention, and concern for others. This study aims to assess in detail the influence of social competence possessed by class teachers. This study uses a qualitative approach. The main subjects of the study, namely grade V teachers and supporting objects, namely students. Data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman's theory, including data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study showed that the social competence of grade V teachers, including inclusive attitudes, polite communication, adaptability, and communication with the professional community, had a positive effect on the learning process. Teachers who are effective in social competence create a pleasant learning atmosphere, increase comfort, motivation, and student learning achievement. This study concludes the importance of strengthening social competence in improving the quality of the learning process in the classroom.
