Strong Snow White Requires Stronger Marriageable Huntsman

In this article, we discuss a media discussion group for female students with disabilities, which we created and facilitated using fairy tales to discuss and critique gender norms. Disability was not the primary focus for our media sessions; however, participants occasionally extended dialogue to include intersections between disability and gender. In this article, we discuss literature related to gender, disability, popular culture, and fairy tales. We detail our case study methodology and explain our findings regarding participants’ views of gender representations in fairy tales, the character of Snow White as portrayed in the film Snow White and the Huntsman, and the concept of happily‑ever‑after endings. Finally, we discuss benefits experienced by the participants in the context of forming a community of learners and building relationships with each other.

Hercules by Walt Disney is a fairy-tale type movie that re-tells well-known greek myth about Heracles, ancient Greek hero. In this paper I try to analyze the title character in order to prove that he is a monomythical realization of the contemporary superhero, with it’s main features, like: „the otherness”, being a celebrity and a potential lover. The movie also provides the actualization of a myth with its new American conservative values. However, many suggestions in it imply creating a distance between this new production and the classical Disney’s animations, like Snow White. Contes et identité: Wanto dans les contes gbaya et dans la communication actuelle

Gbaya tales portray gods, humans and animals living as human beings in villages, hunting, gathering and cultivating plants. Wanto, a spider, is the most recurrent character of these tales: he is the one who brings civilization to Gbaya people. My paper points out Wanto’s difference from the other characters and analyzes the complexity of his status. He is the only character whose name can be used as a name for a man. Most other names are specific to a tale, like Snow White in European tales, and cannot be attributed to people. For the Gbaya, Wanto epitomizes the essence of human beings. In fact, on the Internet, it appears that Wanto is always mentioned and claimed as the symbol of Gbaya identity by Gbaya artists. The fundamental role of Wanto in building Gbaya identity shows that oral literature is still vibrant and finds its place in new communication media.

Red as a Pomegranate. Jewish North African versions of Snow White

Abstract:The article presents and discusses oral Jewish North African versions of Snow White, preserved in the Israeli Folktale Archive. Unlike previous interpretations that suggested viewing the relatively active heroine in these tales as reflecting maidens' ability to choose their own destiny, this article suggests viewing them as warning tales, aimed at guiding young maidens on how to manage their sexuality in Arab-Jewish society. The versions in which the father (rather than the mother) decrees the daughter's murder, due to suspected promiscuity or cases in which the heroine is an incest victim, serve to support this idea.

 The performance has a distinctive tripartite structure. The first part unfolds as a lecture given by Professor Per Øhrgaard on education based on Goethe’s special view on formation. Øhrgaard is an expert on Goethe and he is an obvious choice for a performance dealing with formation as its theme and staging a part of a drama by Goethe. Nobody else could be better as an intellectual readymade. In Calling Clavigo (2002), Øhrgaard is staged in a similar position to that the dwarfs and twins in The Picture of Snow White.
 
 

La Lij en la publicidad: Un ejemplo de intertextualidad y lecturas multimodales en el Grado en Educación Primaria

Nuestro estudio describe y analiza el Seminario dedicado a “LIJ y Publicidad” en el marco de las Lecturas Multimodales de la asignatura Didáctica de la Literatura Infantil del tercer curso del Grado en Educación Primaria. En concreto, se estudian cinco anuncios de marcas de automóviles cuyo intertexto está representado por un relato infantil. La noción de Mendoza Fillola de “competencia lectora” o “intertexto lector” se amplía pues a la de “competencia multimedial”, dado que los anuncios resaltan iconográficamente elementos secundarios de los cuentos y se convierten de esta forma en centrales. Del análisis se desprende la metamorfosis que experimentan en el marketing publicitario los textos de Cenicienta, La Cigarra y la Hormiga, Blancanieves y La Liebre y la Tortuga, además del personaje de Gulliver.

Este artigo está inserido em um processo de pesquisa de doutorado As idades do Expressionismo – criação de estilo e atmosfera em filmes de animação, que tem sua origem no questionamento sobre as possíveis influências que o cinema de animação recebeu do movimento expressionista – mais particularmente de suas vertentes nas artes plásticas e no cinema. O cinema de animação teria, portanto, além das influências de meios como, por exemplo, os cartoons, os livros infantis e o próprio cinema live action, a influência específica do Expressionismo Alemão na constituição de sua linguagem. Dentre as várias possibilidades de análise, adotamos aqui uma abordagem histórica e formal, para identificar um dos principais elementos expressivos formais do Expressionismo Alemão – a iluminação em claro-escuro –, e, em seguida, verificar a ocorrência deste elemento expressivo formal no filme Branca de Neve e os sete anões.

Reevaluation of Snow White and the Queen in the Postmodern Retellings of Grimms’ “Snow White”

This article examines how the two main characters of “Snow White”― Snow White and the queen―have been reevaluated, modified, and vivified in a number of postmodern fairytale retellings. First, by switching the traits of Snow White and the queen, the retellings disconnect the automatic correlation of the stereotypes of the characters at the mention of their names. And second, by depicting the relationship between Snow White and the queen in terms of the natural cycle of female life, the retellings do away with a simple opposition of good and evil and explore the complex psychology and the motivations behind the deeds of the characters. By closely analyzing the two main characters depicted in several postmodern retellings, this article substantiates that the fairytale retellings revisit the past texts with a critical impulse in mind. Using the similar elements that allow for an intertextual reading of the texts, these retellings highlight the differences. By employing the past texts while carrying contemporary sensibilities and ideology, they reevaluate the traditional ideology that has been assumed as “natural.” (Korea Baptist Theological University/Seminary)

Era um, eram dois, eram três contos : os contos e me encanto outra vez

As atividades desenvolvidas foram feitas no Centro de Convivência Infantil – CeCI/ Unicamp, na Turma do Contos, contendo 20 crianças de 5 e 6 anos. Ocorreu em 2015, as histórias infantis levaram a curiosidades e observações das crianças, através de desenhos, das brincadeiras de faz-de-conta. Queriam conhecer mais sobre as histórias tradicionais infantis. A partir disso, iniciamos as vivências das historias Branca de neve, Chapeuzinho Vermelho, Rapunzel, e assim por diante. Contamos historias tradicionais sob outras perspectivas, tais como , Chapeuzinhos Coloridos, Branca de neve e as Sete Versões, Joões e Marias, Rapunzel, um Conto da Fadas Fabuloso. O objetivo foi reconhecer a importância da literatura infantil e o seu incentivo na formação do hábito de leitura das crianças na educação infantil, sendo esse um meio pelo qual a criança a desenvolve a imaginação, emoções e sentimentos de forma prazerosa e significativa. As vivências resultaram em atividades como construção de fantoches, desenhos, recontos e dramatizações. As linguagens foram os meios simbólicos pelos quais as crianças puderam fazer intercâmbio entre o repertório de símbolos e significados adquiridos a partir das histórias lidas e do mundo que as cercam. Os resultados foram positivos das atividades realizadas. Observou-se a importância de inserir o indivíduo no mundo simbólico, através das histórias e as influências sofridas por elas, pois “as histórias estimulam o desenvolvimento [...], o pensamento hipotético, o raciocínio lógico, pensamento divergente ou convergente, as relações espaciais e temporais", e valorizando a contribuição das histórias infantis.

Snow White in Hellenic primary classrooms: children’s responses to non-traditional gender discourses

ABSTRACTThis paper sets out to investigate how children make sense of and negotiate non-traditional gender discourses promoted through the feminist version of the fairytale of Snow White. The research was based on work with 120 pupils aged 9–11 years old in 2 Athenian primary schools. The data were collected through semi-structured group interviews. The findings suggested that schoolchildren gave conflicting accounts in relation to gender discourses and identities. There is a strong indication that girls of this age are more prepared than boys to challenge traditional gender discourses.

Looking Glass Worlds: The Queen and the Mirror

The realization of absolute beauty: an interpretation of the fairytale Snow White.

This paper interprets the fairytale Snow White (Bruder Grimm 1857) in terms of the realization of absolute beauty. Jung's understanding that 'in myths and fairytales, as in dreams, the soul speaks about itself' (Jung 1945, para. 400), underpins such an approach. From this perspective a fantasy image is not about us, not about our unconsciousness, but is essentially about itself. The idea of absolute beauty first arises in the Queen's mind as a wish. Despite the Queen's strong desire to be named as the most beautiful person in the world, her mirror reflects that it is actually her daughter Snow White who is the fairest. Snow White might be regarded in the language of Giegerich as her internal other. Effectively they are separated into the Real that conceives the idea of absolute beauty and the Ideal that embodies it. The exchange that takes place between the two - mediated by mirror and window - generates the corpse of surpassing beauty that never decays but lies inaccessible behind the glass coffin. However the loving and penetrating gaze of the Prince, representing masculinity, succeeds in reanimating Snow White. Thus the Prince as the Other that is completely external and unknown to both the Queen and Snow White, specifically to their femininity, facilitates the realization of absolute beauty as the Ideal in the Real.

The Writing of “Dreck”: Consumerism, Waste and Re-use in Donald Barthelme’s Snow White

This paper examines the relationship between material waste, late capitalism, and the language and structure of Donald Barthelme’s fiction, with particular attention to Snow White (1967). Going against established modes of allegorizing the theme of waste in Barthelme’s work, I suggest the fruitfulness of a literal reading, and propose that his waste objects are framed as inevitable outcomes of a successful advertising campaign. They are the physical evidence or counterpart to the lexicons of marketing and advertising that so preoccupied the author. Such a reading is particularly apt given that Barthelme’s early fiction coincided with the birth of the environmental movement, and builds on recent scholarship in the fields of New Materialism and waste studies. By examining Barthelme’s depictions of waste through the dual lens of New Materialism and waste studies, and in relation to the work of his contemporaries as well as the literary experimentations of earlier avant-gardists, the paper establishes the different ways in which Barthelme articulates value.

This study aims to determine which cultivars of Brassica oleracea var.Botrytis.L highest potential and determine the optimum dose combinations that produce productivity Brassica oleracea var. Botrytis.L best. The study was conducted at the Green-House Fak.Pertanian UPB from May to October 2014. Using RAL design. With Factorial consist of: Factor I (cultivars) with the code K: K1 = White Shot , K2 = Profta and K3 = Snow White. Factor II combination Cromolaena odorata (O), corn waste compost (J) and NPK fertilizer with C code consists of: C0 = Control; C1 = 100%NPK; C2 = 5%O+5% J+0%NPK; C3 = 5%O+2,5%J+50%NPK; C4 = 2,5%O+5% J+50%NPK; C5 = 5% O+5%J+50%NPK. Each treatment combination was repeated 3 times with 2 sample so that there are 108 plant experiments. Observation research through parameter; plant height (cm), number of leaves (leaf), weight of flower (gr), and dry weight (gr). Based on the analysis of waste compost corn and Chromolaena odorata, nutrient content is relatively high compared to NPK-manure. From the analysis of the interaction parameter is generated on a dry-weight that significantly, plant height, leaf number, the weight of flowert significantly affect compost while cultivars real effect on the number of leaves. The highest rates of plant height k1c3 (22.67cm), number of leaves k2c2 (22:00 leaf), dry weight k2c3 (45.75 gr) and weight of flower k3c3 (119.03 gr). Based on the data analysis of the influence of the observer and cultivars with waste compost corn and Cromolaena odorata more responded by vegetatitif growth while the generative growth is not maximized. “Espelho, Espelho Meu...” O Tema da Beleza e Demais Traços de Contemporaneidade na Transmutação Fílmica de Branca de Neve e o Caçador

A filmografia contemporânea manifesta uma notável tendência para remakes de contos de fada e contos maravilhosos. Nem todos, no entanto, trazem novidades subversivas em relação aos textos paradigmáticos, os contos literários e os desenhos animados de Walt Disney. Dentro da proposta de Iuri Lotman, de memória e evolução cultural da textualidade, se analisa a nova versão fílmica do conto Branca de Neve e o Caçador no sentido de apontar os elementos observados pelo célebre pensador e analisar o que se julgou válido preservar e/ou transformar no remake. Dentre os elementos que se modificaram ou se enfatizaram na nova versão ressaltam as mudanças nos papeis dos protagonistas e a significativa contemporaneidade do tema da beleza, aprofundado na transmutação e interpretado no artigo através das teorias de pensadores como Nancy Etcoff, Umberto Eco e Remo Bodei.

“I Am the Wolf: Queering ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Snow White and Rose Red’ in the Television Show Once Upon a Time”

In season one, episode 15 of the television show Once Upon a Time, viewers are given a glimpse into the history of Ruby/Red, the series’ version of Red Riding Hood. The episode reveals that, contrary to most oral and written versions of the ATU 333 tale, Red herself is the wolf: a werewolf who must wear an enchanted red cloak in order to keep from turning into a monster. The episode also features the beginnings of the close friendship between Red and Snow White. The sisterly bond that quickly forms between the two women, combined with the striking images of their respective red and white cloaks, easily calls to mind a less familiar fairy tale not explicitly referenced in the series: “Snow White and Rose Red” (ATU 426). Taking queer readings of this text as starting points, I argue that this allusion complicates the bond between the two women, opening up space for a compelling reading of Red’s werewolf nature as a coded depiction of her then latent but later confirmed bisexuality.

“I’m a I’m a Scholar at the Moment”: The Voice of the Literary Critic in the Works of American Scholar-Metafictionists

Abstract In her seminal book on metafiction, Patricia Waugh describes this practice as an obliteration of the distinction between “creation” and “criticism.” This article examines the interplay of the “creative” and the “critical” in five American metafictions from the late 1960s, whose authors were both fictional writers and scholars: Donald Barthelme’s Snow White, John Barth’s Lost in the Funhouse, William H. Gass’s Willie Masters’ Lonesome Wife, Robert Coover’s Pricksongs and Descants and Ronald Sukenick’s The Death of the Novel and Other Stories. The article considers the ways in which the voice of the literary critic is incorporated into each work in the form of a self-reflexive commentary. Although the ostensible principle of metafiction is to merge fiction and criticism, most of the self-conscious texts under discussion are shown to adopt a predominantly negative attitude towards the critical voices they embody – by making them sound pompous, pretentious or banal. The article concludes with a claim that the five works do not advocate a rejection of academic criticism but rather insist on its reform. Their dissatisfaction with the prescriptivism of most contemporary literary criticism is compared to Susan Sontag’s arguments in her essay “Against Interpretation.”
