The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission provides state-of-the-art global soil moisture (SM) datasets. However, seasonal SM biases and their contributing factors have not be systematically reviewed. This study evaluated the biases of SMAP V6 dual channel algorithm (DCA), single channel algorithm H-pol (SCA-H) and V-pol (SCA-V) SM products based on core validation sites data. All algorithms perform better under clear- than cloudy-sky, and in cloudless daytime than nighttime. Consecutive clear-sky benefits SM retrieval, progressively lowering the uncertainty of SM retrievals while at the cost of dry biases. Cloudy-sky deteriorates the quality of SM retrievals, and wet biases increase with the duration time of cloudy-sky. The modified V7 DCA has a major improvement, owning the potential to provide accurate retrievals under cloudy-sky. SMAP SM biases are co-determined by vegetation index, soil temperature and their biases, and a single factor only explains at most 54% variance in SM biases. Generally, SMAP SM bias is negatively correlated with soil temperature and positively correlated with its bias. SM bias correlates positively with vegetation index and its bias for single channel algorithms, and the underestimation of SM increases with vegetation density for DCA. To get a complete picture of SMAP SM biases, a total differential of radiative transfer equation is recommended for decomposing SMAP SM biases. To this end, more validation sites are required covering diverse land cover types and providing continuous data records.

Assessing the Spatiotemporal Variability of SMAP Soil Moisture Accuracy in a Deciduous Forest Region

The goal of this study is to assess the temporal variability of the performance of the Soil Moisture Active Passive, SMAP, soil moisture retrievals throughout the seasons as surface conditions change. In-situ soil moisture observations from a network deployed in Millbrook, New York, between 2019 and 2021 are used. The network comprises 25 stations distributed across a 33-km SMAP pixel with a predominantly forest land cover. The in-situ soil moisture observations were collected between 6 and 7 a.m., local time. This article covers the assessment of the temporal accuracy of SMAP soil moisture by incorporating various upscaling methods. Four upscaling methods are used in this study: arithmetic average, Voronoi diagram, topographic wetness index, and land cover weighted average. The agreement between SMAP soil moisture and the upscaled in-situ measurements was gauged using the root-mean-squared difference, the mean difference, and the unbiased root-mean-squared difference. The consistency of the temporal variability of SMAP soil moisture data resulting from the four upscaling methods was analyzed. The results revealed that SMAP retrievals (soil moisture data) are systematically higher than in situ observations during the different seasons. The results indicate that the highest performance of SMAP soil moisture retrievals is in September with an ubRMSD value of 0.03 m3.m−3 for the morning and evening overpasses, which can be attributed to a lower vegetation density during the seasonal transition. The agreement with in-situ observations degrades during March–April with ubRMSD values above 0.04 m3.m−3, reaching ~0.06 m3.m−3 in April, which can be attributed to the non-reliability of in-situ measurements due to freeze\thaw transition and the challenging determination of the soil effective temperature. The ubRMSD is also higher than 0.04 m3.m−3 in the months of May–June, which could be due to the introduced vegetation effect during the growth season. These findings are consistent across all the upscaling methods. The average ubRMSD over the study period is 0.055 m3.m−3, which falls short of meeting the mission’s performance target. This study proves the need to enhance SMAP retrieval over forest sites.

Soil moisture estimation in South Asia via assimilation of SMAP retrievals

Abstract. A soil moisture retrieval assimilation framework is implemented across South Asia in an attempt to improve regional soil moisture estimation as well as to provide a consistent regional soil moisture dataset. This study aims to improve the spatiotemporal variability of soil moisture estimates by assimilating Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) near-surface soil moisture retrievals into a land surface model. The Noah-MP (v4.0.1) land surface model is run within the NASA Land Information System software framework to model regional land surface processes. NASA Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA2) and Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals (IMERG) provide the meteorological boundary conditions to the land surface model. Assimilation is carried out using both cumulative distribution function (CDF)-corrected (DA-CDF) and uncorrected SMAP retrievals (DA-NoCDF). CDF matching is applied to correct the statistical moments of the SMAP soil moisture retrieval relative to the land surface model. Comparison of assimilated and model-only soil moisture estimates with publicly available in situ measurements highlights the relative improvement in soil moisture estimates by assimilating SMAP retrievals. Across the Tibetan Plateau, DA-NoCDF reduced the mean bias and RMSE by 8.4 % and 9.4 %, even though assimilation only occurred during less than 10 % of the study period due to frozen (or partially frozen) soil conditions. The best goodness-of-fit statistics were achieved for the IMERG DA-NoCDF soil moisture experiment. The general lack of publicly available in situ measurements across irrigated areas limited a domain-wide direct model validation. However, comparison with regional irrigation patterns suggested correction of biases associated with an unmodeled hydrologic phenomenon (i.e., anthropogenic influence via irrigation) as a result of SMAP soil moisture retrieval assimilation. The greatest sensitivity to assimilation was observed in cropland areas. Improvements in soil moisture potentially translate into improved spatiotemporal patterns of modeled evapotranspiration, although limited influence from soil moisture assimilation was observed on modeled processes within the carbon cycle such as gross primary production. Improvement in fine-scale modeled estimates by assimilating coarse-scale retrievals highlights the potential of this approach for soil moisture estimation over data-scarce regions.

Understanding root-zone soil moisture in agricultural regions of Central Mexico using the ensemble Kalman filter, satellite-derived information, and the THEXMEX-18 dataset

ABSTRACT An Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF)-based assimilation algorithm was implemented to estimate root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) using a Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Transfer (SVAT) model during a complete growing season of corn in Central Mexico. Synthetic and field soil moisture (SM) observations and NASA SMAP SM retrievals were used to understand the effect of vertically spatial updates and uncertainties in meteorological forcings on RZSM estimates. Assimilation of RZSM every 3 days using SM observations at 4 depths lowered the averaged standard deviation (ASD) and the root mean square error (RMSE) by 60 % and 50 %, respectively, compared to the open-loop ASD. The assimilation of synthetic SM at the top 0-5 cm obtained RZSM closer to observations compared to THEXMEX-18 SM measurements and SMAP SM retrievals. Differences between EnKF estimates and SM observations and SMAP SM retrievals are mainly due to misrepresentation of vegetation conditions. The results improved SM estimates up to 10-cm depth using SMAP SM retrievals; however, additional studies are needed to improve SM at deeper layers. The implemented methodology can estimate SM at the top 10 cm of the soil every 3 days to mitigate the impact of the climate change on agricultural production over rainfed areas, particularly in developing countries.

Deep Learning-Based Soil Moisture Retrieval in CONUS Using CYGNSS Delay–Doppler Maps

NASA&#x0027;s Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission has gained significant attention within the land remote sensing community for estimating soil moisture (SM) by using the Global Navigation System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) technique. CYGNSS constellation generates Delay-Doppler Maps (DDM)s, containing important earth surface information from GNSS reflection measurements. Many previous studies considered only designed features from CYGNSS DDM such as the peak value of DDM, whereas the whole DDM image is affected by SM, topography, inundation, and overlying vegetation. In this paper, a deep learning (DL)-based framework is presented for estimating SM products in the Continental United States (CONUS) by leveraging spaceborne GNSS-R DDM observations provided by the CYGNSS constellation along with other remotely sensed geophysical data products. A data-driven approach utilizing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) is developed to determine complex relationships between the reflected measurements and surface parameters which can help to provide improved SM estimation. The CNN model is trained jointly with three types of processed DDM images of Analog Power, Effective scattering area, and Bistatic Radar Cross-section&#x00A0;(BRCS) with other auxiliary geophysical information such as elevation, soil properties, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and vegetation water content (VWC). The model is trained and evaluated using from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission&#x0027;s enhanced SM products at a 9&#x00A0;km &#x00D7; 9&#x00A0;km resolution with VWC less than 5&#x00A0;kg/m<inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{2}$</tex-math></inline-formula>. The mean unbiased root-mean-square difference (ubRMSD) between concurrent CYGNSS and SMAP SM retrievals from 2017 to 2020 is 0.0366 <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$m^{3}/m^{3}$</tex-math></inline-formula> with a correlation coefficient of 0.93 over 5-fold cross-validation and 0.0333 <inline-formula><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$m^{3}/m^{3}$</tex-math></inline-formula> with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 over year-based cross-validation at spatial resolution of 9&#x00A0;km &#x00D7; 9&#x00A0;km and temporal resolution same as the CYGNSS mission.

Assimilating satellite-based soil moisture observations in a land surface model: The effect of spatial resolution

This article focuses on developing a data assimilation system that combines the modeled surface moisture estimates and satellite observations. Specifically, model states simulated by the Noah-MP land surface model are updated using an Ensemble Kalman Filter with products from the NASA SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) satellite mission. The land surface model is run on two different regular grids, one at 12.5 km and the other at 500 m to produce surface and root zone soil moisture estimates across Oklahoma during April-July 2015. In the first case, the model was forced with the NLDAS-2 (North America Land Data Assimilation System) dataset and in the second with a downscaled version of the same dataset. Ground observations from the Oklahoma Mesonet network are compared to surface and root zone soil moisture output simulated by three different Noah-MP model runs i) an open loop simulation (in which no satellite data are assimilated); ii) assimilation of the 36 km SMAP radiometer-only product, and iii) assimilation of the 9 km SMAP radiometer-radar combined product. Results show that SMAP soil moisture retrievals improve the model performance (i.e., with respect to the open loop run) and that forcing the land surface model with higher resolution atmospheric forcings yields higher correlations and smaller errors in soil moisture simulations with respect to the original NLDAS-2 dataset. Although root zone soil moisture is not directly assimilated (since satellite observations are limited to the top 5 cm of the soil column), the assimilation of SMAP products at the surface is transferred to lower layers by the modeled physical processes and is shown to improve root zone soil moisture estimates as well.

Impact of vegetation water content information on soil moisture retrievals in agricultural regions: An analysis based on the SMAPVEX16-MicroWEX dataset

Soil moisture (SM) retrieval in agricultural regions during the growing seasons is particularly challenging due to high spatial variability and dynamic vegetation conditions. The retrievals have been problematic even when the passive signatures at different spatial scales match well since they depend upon the accuracy of vegetation information such as the vegetation water content (VWC). The VWC used in the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) single channel retrieval algorithm (SCA) is derived from remotely sensed, climatologically-based Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which does not respond to real-time vegetation dynamics and is prone to saturation. This study explored the differences and seasonal trend in passive signatures and SM at satellite- and field-scales and investigated uncertainties in retrievals arising from different approaches used to estimate VWC from optical and radar indices. It used high temporal resolution, ground-based data collected during the SMAP Validation-Microwave Water, Energy Balance Experiment in 2016 (SMAPVEX16-MicroWEX) during a growing season of corn and soybean. Overall, the brightness temperatures (TB) from SMAP matched well with the upscaled, ground-based TB, with a root mean square differences (RMSDs) of about 5 K. In contrast, the SMAP SM retrievals were worse during rapid vegetation growth in the mid-season, with higher RMSDs compared to the upscaled in situ SM, than those in the late-season. In addition, the ground-based TB from corn and soybean were similar in the early and the late seasons, while their emission differences were > 40 K in the mid season. This indicates the importance of accurate VWC information, particularly during the early and late growing seasons, to account for sub-pixel heterogeneities in agricultural regions. VWC obtained from five optical and radar indices were used in the SMAP SCA for soil moisture retrieval for the entire growing season of corn. The NDVI-based VWC provided SM retrievals that were consistently lower compared to those using in situ VWC, with a higher RMSD of 0.030 m3/m3 and a negative bias of 0.020 m3/m3 for VWC > 4 kg/m2. The Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI)-derived VWC resulted in lower SM retrieval RMSD of 0.022 m3/m3 when compared with in situ SM. Among the three radar indices, vertically polarized cross-pol ratio (CRvv)-derived VWC provided similar RMSDs in retrieved SM as the NDWI-derived VWC during the growing season. The radar vegetation index (RVI)-derived VWC improved in the late season compared to the in situ VWC and resulted in SM retrievals with RMSDs similar to the CRvv-derived retrievals. Results presented here suggest that SMAP SCA SM retrievals could be improved through the use of near-real time NDWI and CRvv-derived vegetation information. Microwave data are available regardless of cloud cover, so the guaranteed availability of CRvv to capture seasonal and interannual variability is advantageous.

A simulation-based approach for removing the effect of water contamination on SMAP soil moisture retrieval over the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

ABSTRACT L-band passive microwave remote sensing is currently the optimum tool for the large-scale soil moisture mapping. However, due to the coarse spatial resolution of passive microwave remote sensing, the existence and dynamic changes of water bodies in the field of view would affect the performance of soil moisture retrieval. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is a densely populated area of lakes in China, and the correction of water contamination effect is much more challenging. In this letter, we proposed a simulation-based approach which utilizes a radiative transfer model to simulate the brightness temperature (TB) of water bodies to correct the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) data over the QTP, taking into account of wind speed, surface temperature and salinity of lakes. The simulated data and water area fraction obtained from a dynamic map of water bodies were applied to remove the effect of water contamination. Results showed that the relatively low SMAP TBs surrounding both small and large lakes could be eliminated and do not have correlation with the water area fraction after using the proposed approach. Validation results in the Naqu network demonstrated that the simulation-based approach can effectively remove the water contamination from SMAP data with improved soil moisture retrievals.

Assessment of SMOS and SMAP soil moisture products against new estimates combining physical model, a statistical model, and in-situ observations: A case study over the Huai River Basin, China

Soil moisture often governs the exchange of water between the land surface and the atmosphere and, as a result, has a profound effect on the global water and energy cycles. With the launch of the two new L-band satellite missions tasked with retrieving surface soil moisture (i.e., Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and Soil Moisture Active/Passive (SMAP) missions), new possibilities exist for quasi-global soil moisture monitoring. Here, new soil moisture estimates (CLDAS-BPNN), generated by fusing a land surface model soil moisture product (CLDAS) using in-situ observations via a Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) method, are used to evaluate four satellite-derived soil moisture products (SMOS-L3, SMOS-IC, SMAP_L3_SM_P, and SMAP_L3_SM_P_E) over the highly irrigated Huai River Basin in China. Results indicate that the post-processing of CLDAS (to generate CLDAS-BPNN) reduces soil moisture errors (particularly bias) and preserves temporal correlations with in-situ observations. Due to extensive irrigation present in the basin, CLDAS-BPNN soil moisture time series have weak seasonal differences and the spatial distribution of their means does not reflect known precipitation patterns. Based on the validation of SMOS and SMAP soil moisture retrievals against CLDAS-BPNN, several key findings can be obtained. First, SMAP retrievals are recommended for locations possessing both valid SMOS and SMAP retrievals. However, SMOS provides generally better spatial support than SMAP. Second, the four satellite retrievals present no significant seasonal variation in time-varying errors, and larger soil moisture underestimation is observed in winter than in summer. Finally, all four satellite products exhibit degraded accuracy in mountainous and forested areas of the Huai River Basin relative to flatter terrain in the Huaibei plain.

Evaluation of GEOS Precipitation Flagging for SMAP Soil Moisture Retrieval Accuracy

The precipitation flag in the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Level 2 passive soil moisture (L2SMP) retrieval product indicates the presence or absence of heavy precipitation at the time of the SMAP overpass. The flag is based on precipitation estimates from the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) Forward Processing numerical weather prediction system. An error in flagging during an active or recent precipitation event can either (1) produce an overestimation of soil moisture due to short-term surface wetting of vegetation and/or surface ponding (if soil moisture retrieval was attempted in the presence of rain), or (2) produce an unnecessary non-retrieval of soil moisture and loss of data (if retrieval is flagged due to an erroneous indication of rain). Satellite precipitation estimates from the Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) Version 06 Early Run (latency of ~4 hrs) precipitationCal product are used here to evaluate the GEOS-based precipitation flag in the L2SMP product for both the 6 PM ascending and 6 AM descending SMAP overpasses over the first five years of the mission (2015-2020). Consisting of blended precipitation measurements from the GPM (Global Precipitation Mission) satellite constellation, IMERG is treated as the “truth” when comparing to the GEOS model forecasts of precipitation used by SMAP. Key results include: i) IMERG measurements generally show higher spatial variability than the GEOS forecast precipitation, ii) the IMERG product has a higher frequency of light precipitation amounts, and iii) the effect of incorporating IMERG rainfall measurements in lieu of GEOS precipitation forecasts are minimal on the L2SMP retrieval accuracy (determined vs. in situ soil moisture measurements at core validation sites). Our results indicate that L2SMP retrievals continue to meet the mission’s accuracy requirement (standard deviation of the ubRMSE less than 0.04 m3/m3).

Assimilation of SMAP and ASCAT soil moisture retrievals into the JULES land surface model using the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter

A land data assimilation system is developed to merge satellite soil moisture retrievals into the Joint U.K. Land Environment Simulator (JULES) land surface model (LSM) using the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (LETKF). The system assimilates microwave soil moisture retrievals from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) radiometer and the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) after bias correction based on cumulative distribution function fitting. The soil moisture assimilation estimates are evaluated with ground-based soil moisture measurements over the continental U.S. for five consecutive warm seasons (May–September of 2015–2019). The result shows that both SMAP and ASCAT retrievals improve the accuracy of soil moisture estimates. Especially, the SMAP single-sensor assimilation experiment shows the best performance with the increase of temporal anomaly correlation by ΔR ~ 0.05 for surface soil moisture and ΔR ~ 0.03 for root-zone soil moisture compared with the LSM simulation without satellite data assimilation. SMAP assimilation is more skillful than ASCAT assimilation primarily because of the greater skill of the assimilated SMAP retrievals compared to the ASCAT retrievals. The skill improvement also depends significantly on the region; the higher skill improvement in the western U.S. compared to the eastern U.S. is explained by the Kalman gain in the two experiments. Additionally, the regional skill differences in the single-sensor assimilation experiments are attributed to the number of assimilated observations. Finally, the soil moisture assimilation estimates provide more realistic land surface information than model-only simulations for the 2015 and the 2016 western U.S. droughts, suggesting the advantage of using satellite soil moisture retrievals in the current drought monitoring system.

Evaluations of Machine Learning-Based CYGNSS Soil Moisture Estimates against SMAP Observations

This paper presents a machine learning (ML) framework to derive a quasi-global soil moisture (SM) product by direct use of the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS)’s high spatio-temporal resolution observations over the tropics (within ±38° latitudes) at L-band. The learning model is trained by using in-situ SM data from the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) sites and various space-borne ancillary data. The approach produces daily SM retrievals that are gridded to 3 km and 9 km within the CYGNSS spatial coverage. The performance of the model is independently evaluated at various temporal scales (daily, 3-day, weekly, and monthly) against Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission’s enhanced SM products at a resolution of 9 km × 9 km. The mean unbiased root-mean-square difference (ubRMSD) between concurrent (same calendar day) CYGNSS and SMAP SM retrievals for about three years (from 2017 to 2019) is 0.044 cm3 cm−3 with a correlation coefficient of 0.66 over SMAP recommended grids. The performance gradually improves with temporal averaging and degrades over regions regularly flagged by SMAP such as dense forest, high topography, and coastlines. Furthermore, CYGNSS and SMAP retrievals are evaluated against 170 ISMN in-situ observations that result in mean unbiased root-mean-square errors (ubRMSE) of 0.055 cm3 cm−3 and 0.054 cm3 cm−3, respectively, and a higher correlation coefficient with CYGNSS retrievals. It is important to note that the proposed approach is trained over limited in-situ observations and is independent of SMAP observations in its training. The retrieval performance indicates current applicability and future growth potential of GNSS-R-based, directly measured spaceborne SM products that can provide improved spatio-temporal resolution than currently available datasets.

Are extreme soil moisture deficits captured by remotely sensed data retrievals?

ABSTRACT Accurate soil moisture (SM) data are key for climate and surface-atmosphere simulations associated with prediction and analysis of weather and climate variability. Here, we assessed in situ vs. remotely sensed SM discrepancies in a humid watershed during an extreme drought and an arid watershed under peak dry-season conditions. Using in situ SM measurements from the Soil and Climate Analysis Network (SCAN) we compared timeseries data with two remotely sensed data sources: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) and the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) radiometers. Over a nearly three-year period (31 March, 2015 to 31 December, 2017), SMAP timeseries had a higher correlation with SCAN data (R 2 = 0.24 to 0.75) compared to SMOS estimates (R 2 = 0.04 to 0.68) with lower average RMSE (0.03 vs. 0.19 cm3 cm-3). Possible sources of error were identified related to underlying assumptions in the SM retrieval algorithm, principally that soil and vegetation canopy temperatures are in equilibrium during satellite retrievals and that vegetation scattering and attenuation may be accurately represented when using static, long-term averages of NDVI. We concluded that although SMAP SM retrievals reflect dry periods observed in in situ SM timeseries, the magnitude of extreme conditions were underestimated.

SMAP underestimates soil moisture in vegetation-disturbed areas primarily as a result of biased surface temperature data

The Soil Moisture Active Mission (SMAP) baseline V-pol single channel algorithm (SCA-V) retrieves soil moisture (SM) based on the 2000–2010 Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) climatology. This parameterization scheme might affect SM retrievals in the context of vegetation disturbances, e.g., as a result of drought. By referencing the European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI), the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) L3 (SMOS-L3) and the SMOS-IC SM datasets, this study investigated the effects of SMAP vegetation parameterization on SMAP–reference SM differences in global land areas that are subject to differing vegetation disturbances. The results show that SMAP might underestimate SM by ~0.007 m3·m−3 for a relative NDVI decrease of 10%. The underestimation might be primarily caused by low biases in the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) surface temperature. Although using NDVI climatology might cause an overestimation of SM (due to an overestimation of vegetation effects and an underestimation of surface roughness effects), the concurrent underestimation of the GMAO surface temperature might cause an even larger underestimation of SM. The vegetation biases, particularly the surface temperature biases, should be considered for SMAP SM retrieval. These results have implications for future updates of SMAP SCA-V and applications of time series SMAP SM data for hydroecological studies, especially in the future, which is projected to have strong and long-lasting droughts.

Improving Soil Moisture and Surface Turbulent Heat Flux Estimates by Assimilation of SMAP Brightness Temperatures or Soil Moisture Retrievals and GOES Land Surface Temperature Retrievals

AbstractSurface heat fluxes are vital to hydrological and environmental studies, but mapping them accurately over a large area remains a problem. In this study, brightness temperature (TB) observations or soil moisture retrievals from the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission and land surface temperature (LST) product from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) are assimilated together into a coupled water and heat transfer model to improve surface heat flux estimates. A particle filter is used to assimilate SMAP data, while a particle smoothing method is adopted to assimilate GOES LST time series, correcting for both systematic biases via parameter updating and for short-term error via state updating. One experiment assimilates SMAP TB at horizontal polarization and GOES LST, a second experiment assimilates SMAP TB at vertical polarization and GOES LST, and a third experiment assimilates SMAP soil moisture retrievals along with GOES LST. The aim is to examine if the assimilation of physically consistent TB and LST observations could yield improved surface heat flux estimates. It is demonstrated that all three assimilation experiments improved flux estimates compared to a no-assimilation case. Assimilating TB data tends to produce smaller bias in soil moisture estimates compared to assimilating soil moisture retrievals, but the estimates are influenced by the respective bias correction approaches. Despite the differences in soil moisture estimates, the flux estimates from different assimilation experiments are in general very similar.

Examining the Impact of SMAP Soil Moisture Retrievals on Short-Range Weather Prediction under Weakly and Strongly Coupled Data Assimilation with WRF-Noah

AbstractRemotely sensed soil moisture data are typically incorporated into numerical weather models under a framework of weakly coupled data assimilation (WCDA), with a land surface analysis scheme independent from the atmospheric analysis component. In contrast, strongly coupled data assimilation (SCDA) allows simultaneous correction of atmospheric and land surface states but has not been sufficiently explored with land surface soil moisture data assimilation. This study implemented a variational approach to assimilate the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) 9-km enhanced retrievals into the Noah land surface model coupled with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model under a framework of both WCDA and SCDA. The goal of the study is to quantify the relative impact of assimilating SMAP data under different coupling frameworks on the atmospheric forecasts in the summer. The results of the numerical experiments during July 2016 show that SCDA can provide additional benefits on the forecasts of air temperature and humidity compared to WCDA. Over the U.S. Great Plains, assimilation of SMAP data under WCDA reduces a warm bias in temperature and a dry bias in humidity by 7.3% and 19.3%, respectively, while the SCDA case contributes an additional bias reduction of 2.2% (temperature) and 3.3% (humidity). While WCDA leads to a reduction of RMSE in temperature forecasts by 4.1%, SCDA results in additional reduction of RMSE by 0.8%. For the humidity, the reduction of RMSE is around 1% for both WCDA and SCDA.

Length Scales of Hydrological Variability as Inferred from SMAP Soil Moisture Retrievals

Abstract Hydrological variability at a given location is characterized in part by a horizontal length scale—a measure of how far one can travel from that location and still see similar time variations of a hydrological variable of interest. Here, using Level-2 soil moisture retrievals produced by the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission, we compute global distributions of these length scales for the Northern Hemisphere warm and cold seasons (May–September and November–March, respectively). The length scales show significant spatial and seasonal variability, with, as expected, much larger values (e-folding scales of greater than 500 km) often seen in the cold season, when convective rainfall is less prominent. The SMAP-derived length scales are found to be largely consistent with those derived directly, where possible, from precipitation measurements. This suggests a unique value of the retrievals: outside of well-instrumented areas, satellite-based soil moisture datasets have the potential to provide otherwise unattainable estimates of the horizontal length scales of hydrological variability.

Improving Brightness Temperature Measurements Near Coastal Areas for SMAP

The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission is designed to acquire L -band radiometer measurements for the estimation of soil moisture with 0.04 m3/m3 volumetric accuracy in the top 5 cm for vegetation with water content of less than 5 kg/m2. In regions near the coast or near inland bodies of water, the signal measured by the SMAP radiometer contains emissions from land and water, resulting in errors in the soil moisture estimation. In this article, the effort to extract the brightness temperature (TB) according to the land fraction or water fraction (depending on the center of the footprint location) from the affected SMAP measurements was addressed. A single pixel correction algorithm was applied and its performance was evaluated over simulated data. A data-driven approach for the estimation of land and water TB for data correction was developed. The correction algorithm was then applied to real data and its performance was assessed over the SMAP soil moisture retrievals. We showed that the single pixel algorithm is an effective and computationally efficient algorithm for removing land or water TB contamination from the SMAP data.
