The fourth ‘notebook of expenditures’ (December 1924 – May 1929) personally written by archbishop M. Reinys (1884–1953) is a superb source that records the expenditure of money within the period of 54 months indicating the exact dates and sums of money as well as the reasons for payment. Investigation into the notebook reveals the ways M. Reinys gave material aid: the press, cultural events, meetings, concerts and theatres, organizations of Catholic youth and sick adults, the needy, the construction of churches, theological seminaries, monuments and other buildings. He financially supported his relatives, school learners and university students.Three factors determined his activity as a philanthropist. The first one is personal experience which is physical stimulus; the second – his manifestation of the Catholic way of life – is a spiritual stimulus. These two criteria formed the third factor – his concern about the future of Lithuania as a state and nation and its prosperity.M. Reinys found only one way to achieve his task – training educated, religious, spiritual, cultured moral, responsible, dutiful, honest and strong – willed youth. Thus, it was important to teach young people so that they could establish free and economically strong Catholic Lithuania. The Notebook of Expenditures has the records of 3220.50 Lt donation to the daughters of his sister Julijona Martinėnienė: to student Elena and a considerably smaller sum of money to other daughters Adelė and Pulcherija who were schoolgirls. Later, when Adelė became a university student, she was given an amount of 156.15 Lt.Archbishop M. Reinys took care not only of his relatives. Long term or extraordinary grants were awarded to more young people. For instance, Valė Saparaitė was paid 2324.75 Lt for longer than 22 months (January 1927 – October 1928), Filomena and Emilija Strazdaitės received 3100 Lt (August 1927 – April 1929). It is noteworthy that some large extraordinary sums of money were paid to Mural (the full name has not been found out) – 500 Lt (29 April 1926), student Jonas Grinius was awarded a scholarship of 300 Lt to study in France (16 June 1926), in 1929, student D. Juska received 1000 Lt to go to Rome (500 Lt on April 20 and May 23), student Lusys was given an amount of 500 Lt. On 23 June 1928, Salomėja Bacinskaitė-Nėris was donated 1000 Lt which demonstrated M. Reinys’ solicitude for the cultivation of young talents. Archbishop Reinys donated the abundant sums of money to the organizations of ateitininkai and pavasarininkai and their social gatherings, including congresses, summer courses, conferences, foundations, banner acquisition, constructing buildings, fund – raising events and concerts. Over 54 months, he sponsored these organizations giving them an amount of 5368 Lt (3645 Lt for ateitininkai and 1723 Lt for pavasarininkai). The donations of smaller sums received other Catholic organizations which contributed to the enlargement of these organizations. The Notebook of Expenditures shows Venerable Mecislovas Reinys attitude towards the role of financing which discloses that money must serve as the chief foundation for creating goodness and making other people’s life more joyful and easier.
