Updated state of small scale fisheries on the Romanian Black Sea area

Romanian small-scale fisheries are practiced along the Black Sea coast in five fishing ports (Sulina, Cape Midia, Tomis, Constanta and Mangalia) and 18 other small fishing stations, located between Sulina - Vama Veche, at depths ranging between 2 - 20 m and sometimes up to 50 m, when practicing specialized turbot fisheries. Of significant importance is fishing with divers for the Rapana venosa, the species with the greatest impact on the landed catches. In the coastal area, between Vama Veche and Sulina, which also represents an important area for the reproduction, feeding and rearing of some important fish species, the small-scale fishing is practiced with fixed and active gear, throughout the year, mainly using the following types of fishing gears: pound nets, gillnets, longlines, beach seines, cages/traps, handlines and from 2013 with beam trawl. Catch and fishery productivity vary yearly, depending on environmental conditions, fishing effort, status of main commercial species, and human factors. During the analyzed period (2019 - 2023), catches in shallow waters were between 7149 and 3127 tons, which has an increasing trend compared to the previous period (2012 – 2017).

A Study the Water Quality Measuring Equipment with Automatic Sensor System

This paper studied the water quality in Dong Khoai Village, Xaythani District, Vientiane Capital, which is the primary water pumping location for agriculture. The area has a population of over 1735 citizens and cover more than 450 hectares. Common issue found in Markhiaw river. Stream is its toxicity to certain rice field, causing it inability to grow rice despite using fertilizer. Furthermore, this stream gives dissatisfaction odor, negatively affects people who get into the water for fishing and occasionally found death fish in the areas. In order to assess the water quality and disseminate the results to the public. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the creating of an automated sensor system for high precision water quality monitoring in the water. Four sensors; pH (hydrogen potential), EC (electro conductivity), TDS (total dissolved solid), and temperature are used in this procedure. The sensor system was tested, and build a small station uses solar energy and saves information into the SD card and available online by Blynk, and compare the test results with national environmental standards. The research revealed that, in comparison to the standard instrument S5 pro parameter, the measuring stations for the water quality values of all four sensors are accuracy value of 92.91% to 99.34%. Based on the information gathered over the course of two months, from February 13 and March 18, the pH value will be low, at 5. The pH value is high, at 11, between 13, 17 and 18 February 2024. These numbers are considered to be in the standard ranks. Regarding the dissolved solids in the water vary from 3 to 100 mg/L, and the electrical conductivity is between 100 and 180 µS/cm. They are also fall upon the National Environmental Standard. The Temperature value is high, at 40.81 ºC on 4 February 2024 and from 02 March 2024, the Temperature value will be low, at 24.4ºC.

Design and Implementation of an S-band Receiver for Small Satellite Based on the Manufactured Subsystems

In this work the design and implementaion of a receiver for small satellites in range of 1.9 GHz to 3.0 GHz frequency were presented. We concentrated on developing a new architecture for receiving satellites in challenging environments and integrated some of the author’s previously published designs. By using the protected mechanism for RF circuit of receiver, a mutil-stage in IF amplifier and automatic gain control in IF amplifer has been designed, this receiver has a higher gain (78 dB), a larger dynamic ranger (80 dB), a high stability and sensitivity (110 dBm) at 2.15 GHz frequency. The receiver module works well; and due to the flexible structure, easy assembly and low-cost characteristics, it can be applied for small satellites and ground stations.

Determination of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in serum by nucleic acid screening

The determination of serum hepatitis B Virus (HBV) DNA is of paramount significance in the comprehensive management of HBV infection. It aids in diagnosis, disease staging, and treatment monitoring, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing the burden of HBV-related morbidity and mortality. In this work, serum HBV DNA detection was performed using a novel nucleic acid screening system. The sensitivity, selectivity, repeatability, cross reactivity, and HBV DNA stability were evaluated and compared with published data. The detection limit of 95% was 29.12 IU/mL and the 95% confidence interval was from 23.71 to 34.55 IU/mL. Blood samples that contain free hemoglobin (1 g/L, 2 g/L, 4 g/L) and triglycerides (3 mmol/L, 6 mmol/L and 9 mmol/L) were also analyzed. The results demonstrated that the system can also be used in the presence of free hemoglobin and triglycerides. The mean of the cycle threshold (Ct) in 5-day replicates was 35.71 ± 0.35 with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 0.97%. The results of negative samples in the anti-cross contamination experiment showed no response. The coincidence rate for 3001 samples over 20 days of real-time stability measurements and external quality assessment samples was 100%. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the nucleic acid system for HBV-DNA, providing a theoretical basis for other small and medium-sized blood stations or hospitals to these devices.

Power Forecasting for Photovoltaic Microgrid Based on MultiScale CNN-LSTM Network Models

Photovoltaic (PV) microgrids comprise a multitude of small PV power stations distributed across a specific geographical area in a decentralized manner. Computational services for forecasting the output power of power stations are crucial for optimizing resource deployment. This paper proposes a deep-learning-based architecture for short-term prediction of PV power. Firstly, in order to make full use of the spatial information between different power stations, a spatio–temporal feature fusion method is proposed. This method is capable of exploiting both the power information of neighboring power stations with strong correlations and meteorological information with the PV feature data of the target power station. By using a multiscale convolutional neural network–long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) network model, it is capable of generating a PV feature dataset containing spatio–temporal attributes that expand the data source and enhance the feature constraints. It is capable of predicting the output power sequences of power stations in PV microgrids with high model generalization and responsiveness. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, an extensive numerical analysis is also conducted based on a real-world PV dataset.

Response of soil moisture to rainfall following deep soil drying in China's hilly loess lands

Deep soil drying is a physical soil phenomenon that has become increasingly characteristic to artificial afforestation on China's Loess Plateau. Current research is largely short of conclusive reports on soil moisture recovery following deep soil drying in afforested lands. In this study, a 10-m deep underground column was constructed at Pengyang Experimental Station in Ningxia. The CS650-CR1000 automatic soil moisture monitoring system and BLJW-4 small meteorological observation stations were used to respectively monitor soil moisture and meteorological conditions in the study area for the period 2014–2019. The local rainfall was classified and the characteristics of soil infiltration analyzed at both monthly and annual scales. The results showed that: i) Deep soil moisture recovery in the semi-arid Loess Plateau region depended mainly on 25–49.9 mm and >50 mm types of rainfall; together accounting for 35.44 % of the precipitation. ii) Deep soil moisture replenishment occurred mainly for the period from April to October. While this accounted for 30.13 % of the precipitation, evaporation loss accounted for 69.87 % of it. With increasing monthly rainfall (Pm), the variation in monthly infiltration depth (Zm) was quadratic in shape — where Zm = −0.0094 Pm2 + 3.7702 Pm (R2 = 0.9577). iii) At the annual scale, deep soil moisture replenishment was mainly driven by year-on-year infiltration water accumulation. This is because a single year precipitation infiltration was not enough to replenish deep soil moisture. The cumulative infiltration depth for 2014–2019 was 180, 260, 400, 700, 1000 > 1000 cm. It suggested that soil water infiltration and deep dry soil recovery occurred at different times under rainfed conditions in the semi-arid loess hills in China. This is key for in-depth studies of the hydrological process in dry soil regions.

Predicting transit ridership using an agent-based modeling approach

Accurate ridership estimation is pivotal in the advancement of sustainable transit systems, be it for proposed or existing transit networks. A multitude of methods, including travel demand models, direct ridership models, and regression models, have been employed by practitioners and researchers to estimate ridership at both station and network levels. However, travel demand models, frequently utilized for new transit lines, exhibit intrinsic limitations due to their aggregate nature and complexity based on their types. Researchers have also identified deficiencies, such as the incapacity to capture small spatial resolutions and specific station characteristics, as these models are predominantly designed for large-scale analyses.This study aims to overcome these limitations by introducing a novel approach that utilizes three microscopic agent-based models to develop a travel demand modeling suite, providing a policy-sensitive forecasting tool. The suite comprises three agent-based models: SILO-MITO-MATSim. Validation of the model against previous year data is conducted, and projections are made for future years. The model is applied to estimate network-level ridership for the proposed ‘Purple Line,’ a light rail transit line planned by MDOT, MTA, Maryland, which will integrate with the Washington D.C. Metro, the fourth largest transit system in the USA, boasting an average daily ridership of half a million. The study’s findings indicate an anticipated ridership of approximately 31,230 passengers in the inaugural year of 2027. The proposed model offers a robust and policy-sensitive solution empowering decision-makers to make informed choices to support a sustainable transportation system.

Impact of Restricted Public Transport Since COVID-19 on Women in Rural India: A Qualitative Study

PurposeRailways are crucial as public transport in rural India in connecting the villages with cities. Since COVID-19, most of the trains in rural India have not stopped at small railway stations, which has impacted the mobility of the villagers. This study is conducted in Piprai, a village in North India, to explore the impact of non-halting trains since COVID-19 on young girls in rural India. Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts a qualitative research design to explore the impact of non-halting trains since COVID-19 on young girls in rural India. Qualitative data was collected from three sources. Two physical participatory workshops were conducted in Piprai in March 2021 and October 2022 with 10 and 12 participants, respectively. A WhatsApp group was formed with six girls for continuous feedback and discussions. A social activist from the same area was the point of contact and was interviewed to understand the overall condition of women in the village. FindingsThe results provide valuable insights into how the lack of public transportation since COVID-19 has affected young girls in rural India. Women's mobility has been limited, which has led to a halt in higher studies, being unable to visit hospitals regularly and meeting relatives, especially parents in different cities. Furthermore, the above reasons have led to anxiety and mental disturbance. Originality/valueThis study is among the first to explore the impact of lack of transportation since COVID-19 on women in rural India. This is the first time any such study has been conducted in the remote area of Bundelkhand, UP, India.

Natural Plague, Manmade Dilemmas: Satirical Art in Disorder in Cholera

More than two decades after the publication of Disorder in Cholera by Chi Li, a sudden pandemic has brought this satirical work to the attention of literary enthusiasts. Deriving from the past experience of Chi Li as an epidemiologist, this novella recounts fragments of the lives and experiences of members of a small epidemic prevention station during a cholera epidemic, and reveals the multiple pitfalls of epidemic prevention and governance systems in China. This study tries to look into the satirical art from the perspective of Wen Da, interpret the multiple manmade dilemmas during the natural epidemic, and finally, offer insights for modern epidemic prevention and control.

Off-Grid Electric Vehicle Charging Station with Integrated Local Server OCPP Protocol as a Management System

Abstract Electric vehicles are widely regarded as pivotal in driving the sustainability of transportation networks forward, thanks to their capacity to diminish carbon emissions, enhance air quality, and bolster the robustness of electricity grids. The accessibility of charging infrastructure and the subjective norms that endorse electric mobility actively shape the electric vehicles acceptance. In this study, Our main goal is to provide off-grid electric vehicle charging infrastructures and the data communication protocols that connect to servers. We analyze the specifications of the OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) with an emphasis on its applicabillity for electric charging stations for vehicles. Our research concludes that off-grid electric vehicle charging systems can be effectively applied to small electric vehicles such as electric motorcycles, scooters, and bicycles. The OCPP data communication protocol can also support interactions between small electric vehicle charging stations and central server management systems (CSMS). Furthermore, we tested the electric vehicle charging process for a duration of two hours, and the charging station consistently produced stable voltage, current, and power output, matching the inverter outputs and fulfilling the specifications required by electric vehicle charging adapters. Analysis of throughput data indicates a positive correlation between the number of operational ports at a charging station and the volume of data processed by the server. However, beyond a certain threshold a decline in data transactions was observed, attributable to data loss.

A railway modernity. Izmalkovo train station in Ivan Bunin’s work

The article discusses the everyday life of Izmalkovo, a train station in Imperial Russia’s Oryol governate. Among its frequent visitors and commuters was Ivan Bunin. The writer often resided in the area and used the station’s postal and passenger services. Housed in a small and inconspicuous railway station building of the fourth rank, Izmalkovo gradually became an important logistical hub for the writer. Izmalkovo’s postmark grew increasingly familiar to prominent figures of Russian modern art and literature. Following the devastating events of 1917, life in the Russian provinces becomes perilous for those living there. The political crisis forced Bunin to move from Izmalkovo to Yelets, where he had to seek a secret sanctuary at the local notary’s house. Next, the writer was forced to flee the country. Nostalgic memories of the humble station’s chronotope haunted Bunin for the rest of his life. Using an extensive body of examples, the scholar traces the changing perception of the station in the Nobel Prize winner’s writings, from the romantic impressions of his youth to the agonizing reflections on the ‘cursed days.’

WSN-Based Data Acquisition System for Collecting Environmental Pollution Factors for Green City

Implementation with a portable, intelligent weather station is to upgrade the system for environmental management and monitoring. This gadget measures and assesses meteorological and air quality data by real-time implementation through the Internet of Things technology to provide important environmental condition insights. The monitoring station's hardware parts include the ESP32 board, MQ2, MQ3, and MQ135 sensors for gas detection. Such an intelligent weather monitoring station can easily be deployed in different environments due to its portability and versatility. This small station size and its wireless link will enable effective data collection and transfer and integration into other systems of the present day. The existing environmental monitoring system takes the temperature and humidity and measures ammonia, benzene, alcohol, smoke, and carbon monoxide. Therefore, data is brought to the monitoring station, where it communicates in real time for the users to review and analyse on the online platform Blynk. It enables users to easily make data presentations and create notifications and dashboards using a mobile app of Blynk and the web platform, enabling them to create interfaces that meet their satisfaction easily. Users may also upload the uploaded data to a web server for remote access and analysis, which eases scalability and flexibility. Portable intelligent weather monitoring station has significant areas of influence on applications like public health, urban planning, and environmental monitoring, among others. It thus provides decision-makers with information on pollution management and climate resilience. This provides a sustainable and resilient future; it is approachable since the interface used in the system is accessible, befitting the two settings: urban and rural. The Intelligent Portable Weather Monitoring Station provides great usefulness in the disclosure, development, innovation of technology, and practice in the quest for meeting challenges of the environment with the promotion of sustainability. This not only allows smarter and more sustainable city development with effective environmental monitoring and management that includes IoT technologies but can also allow flexible data transmission facilities.

A BIM-FDS Based Evacuation Assessment of Complex Rail Transit Stations under Post-Earthquake Fires for Sustainable Buildings

Post-earthquake fire is considered as a catastrophic secondary disaster to personal and property safety, especially in complex rail transit station. This is primarily attributed to intricate infrastructure, densely populated floors, and the unrestricted layout of these areas. The aim of this study is to evaluate the evacuation capacity of complex railway stations under post-earthquake fires, and provide sustainable recommendations for building design. In this article, an evacuation assessment of a complex rail transit station under the post-earthquake fire for sustainable buildings was conducted from the internal environment and external rescue based on Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Fire Dynamic Simulation (FDS). The internal environment evacuation assessment simulation experiments were conducted in six hypothetical high-risk scenarios. In addition, the external rescue assessment was based on investigation of the route and the required rescue time during different periods of holidays and workdays. The results show that (1) The influence caused by different sizes of fire area in the power distribution room is smaller than those in the train at the platform floor. (2) In fire scenarios with the same fire area but different fire locations, the temperature is more affected than the CO concentration in the power distribution room. (3) It shows slight differences between single-floor fire and double-floor fire on evacuation of small area fire in power distribution room. Meanwhile, optimized design recommendations are proposed to reduce the risk of emergency evacuation in both internal and external environments of rail transit stations for sustainable future buildings, which include strategically locating the power distribution room away from public areas, installing fire-resistant doors around the room, increasing the quantity of smoke detectors and alarms with regular maintenance, minimizing the size of the power distribution room, developing specific emergency plans for train fires, and incorporating small fire stations in urban planning near complex public buildings to mitigate post-earthquake road obstruction challenges.

Technical achievable potential of photovoltaic conversion of solar radiation for the conditions of Ukraine

This study investigates solar energy photovoltaic conversion processes while exploring new approaches to identify potential areas for the installation of photovoltaic stations. This research aims to enhance existing methodologies of technical-achievable potential calculation, considering the specificity of territories, the possibility of installing rooftop photovoltaic stations, and the current development of photovoltaic technologies. The developed methodology considers the type of stations, urban building specifics during the calculation of suitable areas for photovoltaic station installation, the potential for installing small and medium rooftop stations, and the modern technical characteristics of photovoltaic modules. The refinement of the PV panels and PV station area ratio calculations revealed that its value depends on the type and power of the station, varying from 0 to 1. This approach simplifies the determination of power capacity of a station that can be installed in a designated area. Consideration of the technical characteristics of the latest photoelectric conversion technologies demonstrates a significant potential increase compared to the existing calculation methodologies. Calculations conducted using the developed methodology revealed that the technically achievable potential of solar energy conversion for Ukraine is 369 TWh/year (254 GWp DC). This figure exceeds the estimations of existing calculation methodologies at least twice. The obtained results showed a significantly greater potential for solar energy in Ukraine, which expands the possibilities of using photovoltaic technologies to supply energy to consumers. This is especially important during the war because of the insufficient electricity production by existing power plants, many of which have been destroyed.

Renewable Energies, Option of Future.

The solar photovoltaic power, solar thermal power, wind power, biomass, biofuels, energy from waste power & small hydro power stations, etc. are part of the installations that allow the use of a huge number of different energies, called renewable energies, clean energies or new energies. In fact the innovation resides fundamentally in technologies applied today to obtain energy, and the role assigned to these methods of power generation in the world of energy generation. This paper presents the development of this type of energies emphasizing its use to generate electricity. The advantages and trade-offs will be analyzed, as well as short and mid term expectations, studying their incidence on the environment. Moreover, the main renewable energies will be described: Minihydroelectric power stations, solar thermal stations, solar photovoltaic stations, wind power stations biomass and urban waste power stations.

Geoecological and economic consequences of creation, drainage and possible variants of restoration the Kakhovsky reservoir

In the article, in the aspect of engineering and geological safety of structures and communications, the long-term hydrogeological consequences of the support and drainage effects at coastal areas of destroyed Kakhovsky hydro node reservoir as a leading eco-forming component of a giant natural and man-made geosystem are considered. In particular, it included Zaporizhia NPP, the largest in Europe, and the largest irrigation systems in Ukraine. The consequences of the hydrodynamic disaster due to explosion of Kakhovskaya HPP, the dynamics and current state of drainage of the bed of its reservoir are briefly described, according to the data of GIS analysis of space images. And also – the state of hydrogeological and engineering-geological conditions in the reservoir support zone at the time of disaster and in retrospect. A calculated assessment of changes in hydrogeological conditions for the next 10-15 years has been carried out. Long-term natural and man-made threats that arose as a result of such changes in hydrogeological (geofiltration and geodynamic) conditions are named. The set of socio-economic threats that arose due to the negative consequences of Kakhovsky reservoir existence and draining is described. It is emphasized that the restoration of hydrotechnical and water management parameters of the reservoir in the previous values (according to the conservative version) will lead to secondary geospatial water saturation of subsiding loess-loamy silty-clay floatingable rocks that have already undergone deformations due to a decrease in geotechnical stability during the initial flooding and subsequent drainage. This will start a new stage in the formation of dangerous violations of stress-deformed state of coastal slopes, of Zaporizhzhya NPP responsible structures foundation and in nearby cities and towns. A socially and ecologically favorable option for the rehabilitation of affected region is possible only on the modern European ideological and technological basis of taking into account the maximum permissible changes in the hydrological network, i.e. by means of: creating a cascade of low support channel reservoirs with locks and small hydroelectric power stations, reconstruction of riverside ponds and water supply systems, transfer of domestic water supply to underground sources, irrigated lands – for drip irrigation, ecological reclamation and afforestation of drained lands.

“White Coal” for Petrograd: Attempts at Energy Transition During First World War

This article examines the origins of Russian hydropower in the prerevolutionary period. From the 1880s, entrepreneurs in the Russian Empire began constructing small hydroelectric power stations for industrial purposes. Despite a lack of statelevel attention for these technologies for an extended period, they were studied by the Imperial Russian Technical Society. The First World War sparked interest in hydropower among government authorities as fuel and financial crises forced the government to seek cheaper energy sources. Legislative measures for regulating the use of water bodies and the practical application of hydropower, which were carried out by the government between 1915 and 1917, received further implementation in Bolshevik Russia. The author analyzes the process of transitioning from discussions about the potential uses of hydropower to the practical implementation of the first hydroelectric projects, emphasizing the key role of the war in accelerating this transition. The source base of the study consisted of administrative documents from the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, official statistics, press materials, and scholarly literature.

Charging autonomous electric vehicle fleet for mobility-on-demand services: Plug in or swap out?

This paper compares two prevalent charging strategies for electric vehicles, plug-in charging and battery swapping, to investigate which charging strategy is superior for electric autonomous mobility-on-demand (AMoD) systems. To this end, we use a queueing-theoretic model to characterize the vehicle waiting time at charging stations and battery swapping stations, respectively. The model is integrated into an economic analysis of the electric AMoD system operated by a transportation network company (TNC), where the incentives of passengers, the charging/operating shift of TNC vehicles, the operational decisions of the platform, and the planning decisions of the government are captured. Overall, a bi-level optimization framework is proposed for charging infrastructure planning of the electric AMoD system. Based on the proposed framework, we compare the socio-economic performance of plug-in charging and battery swapping, and investigate how this comparison depends on the evolving charging technologies (such as charging speed, battery capacity, and infrastructure cost). At the planning level, we find that when choosing plug-in charging, increased charging speed leads to a transformation of infrastructure from sparsely distributed large stations to densely distributed small stations, while enlarged battery capacity transforms the infrastructure from densely distributed small stations to sparsely distributed large stations. On the other hand, when choosing battery swapping, both increased charging speed and enlarged battery capacity will lead to a smaller number of battery swapping stations. At the operational level, we find that improved charging speed leads to increased TNC profit when choosing plug-in charging, whereas improved charging speed may lead to smaller TNC profit under battery swapping. The above insights are validated through realistic numerical studies.

Analysis of Competitiveness of Small Ports of the Azov-Black Sea Basin in Multimodal Transportation: Technological Aspects, Transportation Problem Optimisation

A new approach is proposed to the study of functioning of the connecting and transforming link of the multimodal transport and logistics chain, implemented by railway cargo transportation. The methodological basis of the research is classical principles of egalitarianism in the theory of welfare, which allow, based on assessment of the transport and technological infrastructure of the network segment and tariff rates, to build mathematical models that are economically justified, customer-oriented and in demand in management of cargo transportation processes. An algorithm for solving a multi-criteria and multi-extremal problem of integer linear programming with a set of cost objective functions has been developed in the medium of the analytical computing system. The computational experiment is used as a guiding heuristic tool in finding the optimal level of organization and economic efficiency of the cargo transportation process.Optimal combinations of distributions of the number of departure routes per loading stations and related plans of transportation to the reloading stations were found with the help of the Pareto criterion. The obtained values of cost indicators provide the participants of the transportation process with the opportunity to choose competitive options in transportation schemes using small port transshipment stations of the Azov-Black Sea basin.

Disaster response, confined space medicine and safety systems against railway accidents: 2023 Odisha railway accident from India

AbstractRailways are a major mode of transportation for passengers as well as goods. Across the world, minor and major accidents involving railways causing damage to life and property have been reported. The recent triple train derailment and collision near a small railway station in the state of Odisha, India, on 02.06.2023 is a major calamity. The accident resulted in 292 deaths, and more than 1000 injuries were attributed to the accident. In its comprehensive enquiry report, the Commissioner of Railway Safety found lapses in the signalling mechanism and oversight as the reasons for the accident. Immediate rescue, emergency transport and treatment are essential in reducing the mortality and morbidity of such accidents. The relatively newer domain under pre‐hospital and disaster medicine is confined space medicine, which deals with patients trapped in places with limited access to conventional intervention and reduced ventilation. Confined space medicine employs a multi‐hazard and interprofessional approach to treating individuals who are trapped in a structural collapse. It is also essential to critically evaluate and disseminate the entire disaster response systems that functioned during and after the railway accident to identify the existing system's best practices, bottlenecks, and gaps. The train's speed, lack of track and signal maintenance, absence of safety oversight, driver fatigue and distractions are some major determinants of train accidents, highlighting the need for comprehensive planning and training in rail safety. It is essential to improve the timely implementation of maintenance activities and completion of accident inquiries on time. A comprehensive review of the preparedness, rescue and response must be undertaken at the earliest possible opportunity to prevent and prepare for any such disasters in the future.
