The Internal Line-of-Sight Kinematics of NGC 346: The Rotation of the Core Region

We present the stellar radial velocity analysis of the central of the young massive Small Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 346. Using VLT/MUSE integral field spectroscopy in combination with Hubble Space Telescope photometry, we extract 103 spectra of cluster member stars suited to measure accurate line-of-sight kinematics. The cluster member stars show two distinct velocity groups at and , relative to the systemic velocity of (165.5 ± 0.2) km s−1, and hint at a third group at . We show that there is neither a correlation between the velocity groups and the spatial location of the stars, nor their locus on optical color–magnitude diagrams, which makes the stellar velocity a key parameter to separate individual stellar components in such a young star cluster. Velocity group 2 shows clear rotation with Ω2 =(−0.4 ± 0.1) Myr−1, corresponding to (−4.9 ± 0.7) km s−1 at radial distance of 10 pc from the center, a possible remnant of the formation process of NGC 346 through the hierarchical collapse of the giant molecular cloud. The ionizing gas has lost any natal kinematic imprint and shows clear expansion, driven by far-ultraviolet fluxes and stellar winds of the numerous OB stars in the cluster center. The size of this expanding bubble and its expansion velocity of 7.9 km s−1 are in excellent agreement with the estimate that the latest star formation episode occurred about two million years ago.

Evidence of globular cluster abundance anomalies in the SMC intermediate-age cluster Kron 3

ABSTRACT Using spectra obtained with the VLT/FORS2 and Gemini-S/GMOS-S instruments, we have investigated carbon, nitrogen, and sodium abundances in a sample of red giant members of the Small Magellanic Cloud star cluster Kron 3. The metallicity and luminosity of the cluster are comparable to those of Galactic globular clusters but it is notably younger (age ≈ 6.5 Gyr). We have measured the strengths of the CN and CH molecular bands, finding a bimodal CN band-strength distribution and a CH/CN anticorrelation. Application of spectrum synthesis techniques reveals that the difference in the mean [N/Fe] and [C/Fe] values for the CN-strong and CN-weak stars are Δ <[N/Fe]> = 0.63 ± 0.16 dex and Δ <[C/Fe]> = −0.01 ± 0.07 dex after applying corrections for evolutionary mixing. We have also measured sodium abundances from the Na D lines finding an observed range in [Na/Fe] of ∼0.6 dex that correlates positively with the [N/Fe] values and a Δ <[Na/Fe]> = 0.12 ± 0.12 dex. While the statistical significance of the sodium abundance difference is not high, the observed correlation between the Na and N abundances supports its existence. The outcome represents the first star-by-star demonstration of correlated abundance variations involving sodium in an intermediate-age star cluster. The results add to existing photometric and spectroscopic indications of the presence of multiple populations in intermediate-age clusters with masses in excess of ∼105 M⊙. It confirms that the mechanism(s) responsible for the multiple populations in ancient globular clusters cannot solely be an early cosmological effect applying only in old clusters.

Residual velocities of Small Magellanic Cloud star clusters

ABSTRACT We analysed the largest Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) cluster sample (32) with proper motions and radial velocity measurements, from which we obtained their space velocity components. By adopting as a reference, the recent best-fitting rotating disc of SMC star clusters as a function of the position angle, we computed their residual velocity vectors, and compared their magnitudes ($\Delta \, V$) with that of a cluster with residual velocity components equal to the velocity dispersions along the three independent SMC rotating disc axes of motion ($\Delta \, V$ = 60 km s−1). We found that clusters that belong to SMC tidally induced structures have $\Delta \, V\, \gt $ 50 km s−1, which suggests that space velocities of clusters in the process of escaping the rotating disc kinematics are measurably different. Studied clusters pertaining to a northern branch of the Magellanic Bridge, the main Magellanic Bridge, the Counter-Bridge, and the West Halo give support these findings. NGC 121, the oldest known SMC cluster, does not belong to any SMC tidal feature, and has $\Delta \, V$ = 64 km s−1, slightly above the boundary between bound and kinematically perturbed clusters.

The kinematics of Small Magellanic Cloud star clusters

We report results of the proper motions of 25 known Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) clusters (ages ∼ 1–10 Gyr old) derived from Gaia EDR3 data sets. When these mean proper motions were gathered with existent radial velocity measurements to compose the clusters’ velocity vectors, we found the parameter values of a rotation disk that best resemble their observed motions, namely: central coordinates and distance, inclination and position angle of the line-of-nodes, proper motion in right ascension and declination, systemic velocity, rotation velocity, and velocity dispersion. The SMC cluster rotation disk seems to be, at some level, kinematically synchronized with the rotation of the field red giants recently modeled using DR2 data sets. Such a rotation disk is seen in the sky as a tilted edge-on disk, with a velocity dispersion perpendicular to it that is twice as large as that in the plane of the disk. Because the direction perpendicular to the disk is nearly aligned with the Magellanic Bridge, we interpret the larger velocity dispersion as a consequence of the SMC velocity stretching caused by the tidal interaction with the Large Magellanic Cloud. Rotation alone does not seem sufficient to explain the observed kinematic behaviors in the SMC.

Strömgren metallicities for intermediate-age and old star clusters

We report results that show that the straightforward star cluster metallicities obtained from Strömgren vby photometry are age-dependent and need to be corrected for further use. This outcome arises from the comparison of [Fe/H] values derived from Strömgren photometry with those metallicities published in the literature for 26 Large and Small Magellanic Cloud star clusters, whose ages range from ∼1 Gyr up to the oldest-known globular cluster ages in these galaxies. While deriving mean star cluster metallicities, we carried out a thorough selection of red giant branch candidates to comply with the Strömgren metallicity calibration validity regime. We paid attention to the effect of contamination by field stars, particularly those that lie inside the star clusters’ radii, that are distributed along the star cluster red giant branches and that have [Fe/H] values covering a similar range as that for the selected stars. We find that the measured Strömgren metallicities are systematically more metal-poor than the published ones and that a quadratically age-varying function reproduces the relative metallicity values with an overall uncertainty of ∼0.05 dex. We finally performed a similar comparison relying on a fully independent approach, which consisted in using theoretical red giant branches of old globular clusters spanning [Fe/H] values from −2.0 up to 0.0 dex as standards. We then superimposed onto them the red giant branches of star clusters with ages in the range 1.0−12.5 Gyr and estimated their associated metallicities by interpolation. The derived theoretical relative metallicities follow a similar trend as a function of the star clusters’ ages as what has been found from observations of star clusters.

The WAGGS project – I. The WiFeS Atlas of Galactic Globular cluster Spectra

We present the WiFeS Atlas of Galactic Globular cluster Spectra, a library of integrated spectra of Milky Way and Local Group globular clusters. We used the WiFeS integral field spectrograph on the Australian National University 2.3 m telescope to observe the central regions of 64 Milky Way globular clusters and 22 globular clusters hosted by the Milky Way's low mass satellite galaxies. The spectra have wider wavelength coverage (3300 {\AA} to 9050 {\AA}) and higher spectral resolution (R = 6800) than existing spectral libraries of Milky Way globular clusters. By including Large and Small Magellanic Cloud star clusters, we extend the coverage of parameter space of existing libraries towards young and intermediate ages. While testing stellar population synthesis models and analysis techniques is the main aim of this library, the observations may also further our understanding of the stellar populations of Local Group globular clusters and make possible the direct comparison of extragalactic globular cluster integrated light observations with well understood globular clusters in the Milky Way. The integrated spectra are publicly available via the project website.

AGE DETERMINATION OF 15 OLD TO INTERMEDIATE-AGE SMALL MAGELLANIC CLOUD STAR CLUSTERS

We present CMDs in the V and I bands for fifteen star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on data taken with the Very Large Telescope (VLT, Chile). We selected these clusters from our previous work, wherein we derived cluster radial velocities and metallicities from Calcium II infrared triplet (CaT) spectra also taken with the VLT. We discovered that the ages of six of our clusters have been appreciably underestimated by previous studies, which used comparatively small telescopes, graphically illustrating the need for large apertures to obtain reliable ages of old and intermediate-age SMC star clusters. In particular, three of these clusters, L4, L6 and L110, turn out to be amongst the oldest SMC clusters known, with ages of 7.9 +- 1.1, 8.7 +- 1.2 and 7.6 +- 1.0 Gyr, respectively, helping to fill a possible "SMC cluster age gap" (Glatt et al. 2008). Using the present ages and metallicities from Parisi et al. (2009), we analyze the age distribution, age gradient and age metallicity relation (AMR) of a sample of SMC clusters measured homogeneously. There is a suggestion of bimodality in the age distribution but it does not show a constant slope for the first 4 Gyr (Piatti 2011), and we find no evidence for an age gradient. Due to the improved ages of our cluster sample, we find that our AMR is now better represented in the intermediate/old period than that we derived in Parisi et al. (2009), where we simply took ages available in the literature. Additionally, clusters younger than aprox. 4 Gyr now show better agreement with the bursting model, but we confirm that this model is not a good representation of the AMR during the intermediate-age/old period. A more complicated model is needed to explain the SMC chemical evolution in that period.

Integrated parameters of star clusters: a comparison of theory and observations

This paper presents integrated magnitudes and colours for synthetic clusters. The integrated parameters have been obtained for the whole cluster population as well as for the main-sequence (MS) population of star clusters. We have also estimated observed integrated magnitudes and colours of the MS population of galactic open clusters, Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) star clusters. It is found that the colour evolution of the MS population of star clusters is not affected by the stochastic fluctuations, however, these fluctuations significantly affect the colour evolution of the whole cluster population. The fluctuations are maximum in (V−I) colour in the age range 6.7 < log(age) < 7.5. Evolution of integrated colours of the MS population of clusters in the Milky Way, LMC and SMC, obtained in the present study is well explained by the present synthetic cluster model. The observed integrated (B−V) colours of the MS population of LMC star clusters having age ≥500 Myr seem to be distributed around the Z= 0.004 model, whereas (V−I) colours are found to be bluer than those predicted by the Z= 0.004 model. The (V−I) versus (B−V) two-colour diagram for the MS population of the Milky Way star clusters shows a fair agreement between the observations and present model, however, the diagrams for LMC and SMC clusters indicate that observed (V−I) colours are relatively bluer. Possible reasons for this anomaly have been discussed. Comparison of the synthetic (U−B) versus (B−V) relation with the observed integrated parameters of the whole cluster population of the Milky Way, LMC and SMC star clusters indicates that the majority of the bluest clusters [(B−V)0 < 0.0] follow the MS population relation. The colour evolution of young Milky Way, LMC and SMC clusters [6.5 ≤ log(age) ≤8.0] also indicates that a large number of young clusters follow the MS population relation. Therefore, in the absence of a careful modelling of stochastic effects, age determination of young star clusters by comparing their integrated colours with whole cluster synthetic colours may yield erroneous results.

STRUCTURAL PARAMETERS OF SEVEN SMALL MAGELLANIC CLOUD INTERMEDIATE-AGE AND OLD STAR CLUSTERS

We present structural parameters for the seven intermediate-age and old star clusters NGC121, Lindsay 1, Kron 3, NGC339, NGC416, Lindsay 38, and NGC419 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We fit King profiles and Elson, Fall, and Freeman profiles to both surface-brightness and star count data taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Clusters older than 1 Gyr show a spread in cluster core radii that increases with age, while the youngest clusters have relatively compact cores. No evidence for post core collapse clusters was found. We find no correlation between core radius and distance from the SMC center, although consistent with other studies of dwarf galaxies, some relatively old and massive clusters have low densities. The oldest SMC star cluster, the only globular NGC121, is the most elliptical object of the studied clusters. No correlation is seen between ellipticity and distance from the SMC center. The structures of these massive intermediate-age (1-8 Gyr) SMC star clusters thus appear to primarily result from internal evolutionary processes.

Star cluster ‘infant mortality’ in the Small Magellanic Cloud (Redivivus)

The early evolution of star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) has been the subject of significant recent controversy, particularly regarding the importance and length of the earliest, largely mass-independent disruption phase (referred to as ‘infant mortality’). Here, we take a fresh approach to the problem, using an independent, homogeneous data set of UBVR imaging observations, from which we obtain the SMC's cluster age and mass distributions in a self-consistent manner. We conclude that the (optically selected) SMC star cluster population has undergone at most ∼30 per cent (1σ) infant mortality between the age range from about (3–10) Myr, to that of approximately (40–160) Myr. We rule out a 90 per cent cluster mortality rate per decade of age (for the full age range up to 109 yr) at a >6σ level. We independently affirm this scenario based on the age distribution of the SMC cluster sample.

A spectroscopy-based Age-Metallicity Relation of the SMC

The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is the only dwarf galaxy in the Local Group that is known to have formed and preserved populous star clusters continuously over the past 12 Gyr. Due to its proximity (≈ 60 kpc), stars can be resolved well below the oldest main sequence turnoff points. This facilitates accurate age and metallicity determinations without suffering from the age-metallicity degeneracy. Therefore, the SMC star clusters provide a unique closely spaced set of single-age, single-metallicity tracers to derive a well-sampled age-metallicity relation required for the understanding of the star formation history of this satellite galaxy. Up to date spectroscopically based metallicity estimates exist only for the small number of 7 clusters (Da Costa &amp; Hatzidimitriou 1998). Our project now more than doubles the available data set by the observation of 10 additional clusters.

Star formation in the Small Magellanic Cloud: the youngest star clusters

AbstractWe recently launched a comprehensive ground based (ESO/VLT/NTT) and space (HST &amp; SST) study of the present and past star formation in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), in clusters and in the field, with the goal of understanding how star and cluster formation occur and propagate in an environment of low metallicity, with a gas and dust content that is significantly lower than in the Milky Way. In this paper, we present some preliminary results of the “young cluster” program, where we acquired deep F555W (~V), and F814W (~I) HST/ACS images of the four young and massive SMC star clusters: NGC 346, NGC 602, NGC 299, and NGC 376.

The SMC star cluster Lindsay 1

We present new CCD photometry of the Small Magellanic Cloud star cluster Lindsay 1 in UB V Ifilters. It is the first photometry in U and I filters. We determine the reddening E(B V)= 0:014. Using a variety of metallicity indicators in the optical and the infrared regions we determine a cluster metallicity (Fe=H)CG97= 1:05 0:14 and (M=H)= 0:83 0:14. We find that Lindsay 1 has an age of 9-10 Gyr.

The Small Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 458. A new UBVI photometric study

We present a new photometry of the Small Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 458 in UBVI filters. We determine the reddening $E(B-V)=0.04\pm0.02$. By comparison with the isochrones by Bertelli et al. (1994) we derive an age of ≈ 140 Myr. Three candidate blue straggler stars are proposed. The evolved “blue loop” stars of NGC 458 have masses between 4 and 5 $\cal M_\odot$ and are hotter than model predictions.

The Oldest Star Clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud

We present our analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) observations in F450W (~B) and F555W (~V) of the intermediate-age populous star clusters NGC 121, NGC 339, NGC 361, NGC 416, and Kron 3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We use published photometry of two other SMC populous star clusters, Lindsay 1 and Lindsay 113, to investigate the age sequence of these seven star clusters in order to improve our understanding of the formation chronology of the SMC. We analyzed the V vs B–V and MV vs (B–V)o color-magnitude diagrams of these populous Small Magellanic Cloud star clusters using a variety of techniques and determined their ages, metallicities, and reddenings. These new data enable us to improve the age-metallicity relation of star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud. In particular, we find that a closed-box continuous star-formation model does not reproduce the age-metallicity relation adequately. However, a theoretical model punctuated by bursts of star formation is in better agreement with the observational data. The full details of this analysis are reported in Mighell, Sarajedini, &amp; French (1998, AJ, 116, 2395).

WFPC2 Observations of Star Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. II. The Oldest Star Clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud

CLC]Ca[/CLC] [CSC]ii[/CSC] Triplet Spectroscopy of Giants in Small Magellanic Cloud Star Clusters: Abundances, Velocities, and the Age-Metallicity Relation

We have obtained spectra at the Ca II triplet of individual red giants in seven Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) star clusters whose ages range from ∼4 to 12 Gyr. The spectra have been used to determine mean abundances for six of the star clusters to a typical precision of 0.12 dex. When combined with existing data for other objects, the resulting SMC age-metallicity relation is generally consistent with that for a simple model of chemical evolution, scaled to the present-day SMC mean abundance and gas mass fraction. Two of the clusters (Lindsay 113 and NGC 339), however, have abundances that are ∼0.5 dex lower than that expected from the mean age-metallicity relation. It is suggested that the formation of these clusters, which have ages of ∼5 Gyr, may have involved the infall of unenriched gas, perhaps from the Magellanic Stream. The spectra also yield radial velocities for the seven clusters. The resulting velocity dispersion is 16 ± 4 km s-1, consistent with those of the SMC planetary nebula and carbon star populations.
