A novel design of a 2 × 2 array antenna with linear polarization (LP) and circular polarization (CP) characteristics is proposed. Each array elements is composed of a simple ground plane with an inverted L-shaped element and a modified radiating patch based on two inverted L-shaped components. The whole system is fed by a slotted feed line. The proposed single antenna operates over the frequency band of 3–4 GHz, 4.9–5.2 GHz, and 8–14 GHz, whitin which CP is seen at 3.5–4.5 GHz and LP is observed over the remained frequency bands. To improve the performance, four of aforementioned single antennas are arranged in a 2 × 2 array antenna. The feeding mechanism is developed based on a 270° square ring with varying widths in each quarter. Four branches, stemmed from the square ring, are connected to each of the constituent antenna elements for excitation purposes. Proper feeding strategy, suitable design of the elements positions, and wise-tuning of the dimensions of the antenna elements result in coverage of wide bandwidth ranging from 2.8 to 3.8 GHz, 4.5–7 GHz, and 7.3–8 GHz. As noticed, WiMAX and WLAN communication frequency bands are satisfactorily covered. Moreover, CP is attained at the frequency bands of 4.65–4.75 GHz and 5–7.2 GHz.
