Listening Comprehension Skill: The Forgotten Skill in The Saudi Classrooms

Listening plays a very significant role in language acquisition and language learning. The more input kids and students get, the faster and easier it will be for them to acquire and learn any new language. Unfortunately, over a long period listening didn’t receive enough attention by curricula designers, teachers, and students which affected the output and labelled listening as a difficult skill to teach and understand. This study intends to draw the attention to listening through answering three important questions related to the importance of listening, the challenges that face teaching it and suggestions for enhancing this important skill. To this end, the researchers chose all secondary and intermediate students in Jeddah as a population and fifty male and female students as a sample. A survey of twenty- two items was used as a data collection tool. The findings of the study showed clear enthusiasm for listening comprehension and an urgent need to overcome the challenges and reconsider suggestions to improve this skill including training teachers, facilitating it, and increasing the weight in the schedules. The study recommends giving more attention to listening and including it in any English language test.

Transdisciplinary integration for applied linguistics: the case of electrophysiology

PurposeThis study aims to promote transdisciplinary integration in applied linguistics research by exploring the potential contribution of electrophysiology to enhancing listening comprehension skills. Specifically, it examines the effectiveness of dynamic auto-adjustment of speech rate based on heart rate in mitigating listening stress. The study also discusses the implications and future directions of interdisciplinary efforts in applied linguistics.Design/methodology/approachThis study combines literature review, theoretical analysis, and practical application. It begins with a review of existing literature on transdisciplinary integration in applied linguistics and electrophysiology research. Theoretical frameworks are then synthesized to inform the development of an innovative approach to mitigate listening stress through dynamic auto-adjustment of speech rate based on heart rate.FindingsThe analysis suggests that transdisciplinary integration in applied linguistics research, particularly through the incorporation of electrophysiology, holds significant promise for enhancing listening comprehension skills. The dynamic auto-adjustment of speech rate based on heart rate emerges as a promising strategy for mitigating listening stress, calling for empirical research into this topic.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the field of applied linguistics by advocating for transdisciplinary integration and exploring innovative approaches to address challenges in language learning. Incorporating electrophysiology and dynamic auto-adjustment of speech rate based on heart rate offers novel research directions for practical strategies for enhancing listening comprehension skills. This research has the potential to advance theoretical understanding as well as offering practical implications for educators and policymakers seeking to improve language learning outcomes in diverse educational settings.

Penerapan Media Cerita Bergambar Untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Membaca Pemahaman Pada Pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia

This research aims to improve reading comprehension skills using picture story media in class III students. This research is Classroom Action Research (PTK) which is designed to help teachers find and solve problems during the classroom learning process. This classroom action research was carried out in two cycles, with research subjects consisting of 33 class III students. Data collection techniques are observation and tests. The data analysis technique uses quantitative data analysis. The results of research using picture story media for two cycles, the average value of the test results has increased. In cycle I, the first meeting achieved a score of 57% and in the second meeting 63% with the category not yet reaching the KKM and in cycle II there was an increase. The score at the first meeting was 69% and at the second meeting it increased by 100%. This shows that improving reading comprehension skills using picture story media in Indonesian language subjects can be applied further to improve student learning achievement.

The Influence of the CIRC Learning Model (Cooperative, Integrated, Reading, and Composition) on the Reading Skills Students at Islamic Elementary School

This research describes the influence of the CIRC (Cooperative, Integrated, Reading, and Composition) learning model on reading comprehension skills. This research was carried out at MIN 4 Medan City, which was carried out in the even semester of 2023/2024. This research uses a quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experimental type. This study's population was all class IV MIN 4 Medan City students, totaling 120 students, using proactive random sampling. The research sample consisted of 41 students from classes IV-A and IV-B. The data collection techniques are observation, interviews, documentation, and tests. The data analysis techniques used are descriptive analysis and inferential analysis, namely through normality, homogeneity, and independent t-tests, to test hypotheses with the help of the SPSS 27.0 application. The research results showed a difference in the average score obtained in the control class from 51.05 to 64.47 and in the experimental class from 45.00 to 84.09. This shows that using the CIRC (Cooperative, Integrated, Reading, and Composition) learning model influences students' reading comprehension skills. This is proven by the results of the T-test calculation, which shows a Sig (2-tailed) value of 0.000<0.05 so that H_o is rejected and H_a is accepted, meaning that there is a significant influence between the control and experimental classes.

Applying the Task Assignment Method to Teaching Chinese Reading Comprehension Skills at the Basic Stage at Hung Vuong University

In the trend of global integration, Chinese is increasingly proving its important role as an international language, foreign language and culture subject in university programs. Chinese provides students with a new communication tool to absorb advanced scientific and technical knowledge, learn about rich cultural diversity, and easily integrate with the international community. The teaching staff of the Department of Chinese Language and Culture has been using a number of active teaching methods for Chinese Reading comprehension based on two pedagogical perspectives: "learner-centered" and “process-centric”. Among them, task-based teaching method (任务型教学法) is one of the important teaching methods. This is a task-based language teaching method in which instructors guide language learners in completing tasks in class.

The Correlation between Students’ Reading Comprehension Skill and Reading Interest in High School

This study investigates the correlation between reading comprehension skill and reading interest in high school students specifically in English texts. The main objective of this study is to examine the correlation between reading comprehension skill and reading interest in high school students especially in reading English texts. The population of this study consists of second-grade students of a public school in Kutai Kartanegara regency, with cluster sampling will be employed to determine the sample. An English comprehension test and questionnaire of reading interest will serve as the research instrument, and both correlation test and ANOVA will be utilized for data analysis to examine the correlation between reading comprehension skill and reading interest on students. After the data was analyzed with the correlation test, it showed no correlation between students’ reading comprehension and reading interest in high school. According to ANOVA, the result indicated significant differences between the group that has high level of reading interest and those that has low interest. Future research could explore additional variables that may impact reading interests, such as preferences for different genres, motivational factors, and instructional methods aimed at promoting reading for pleasure.

The Flipped Classroom to Improve the EFL Listening Skill

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the flipped classroom as a method to enhance English listening skills. The population in this study consisted of 26 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) first-year students registered in a Bachelor of Arts program in Teaching Local and Foreign Languages at a Public University. This study is quasi-experimental. A pretest and a posttest were applied to identify the differences in the students' listening comprehension skills before and after using this methodology. This study was conducted in three phases: preparation (where the contents and procedures of the flipped classroom were explained), implementation (where the lessons focused on the flipped classroom were administered), and evaluation (where the overall content of the flipped classroom was tested). Results (significance 0.000; p ≤ 0,05) showcase a significant improvement in participants' listening skills. In general, this study can be considered a further contribution to visualizing the occidental educational methodology as a friendly and effective teaching practice, which may be applied in multicultural milieus.

Difficult Aspects of Reading Comprehension Faced by Non-English Department of Vocational Students

Understanding and interpreting text is a fundamental skill for students across disciplines, not limited to those in the English Department. Proficiency in reading comprehension not only enhances vocabulary and writing abilities but also fosters overall academic growth. This research endeavors to pinpoint the primary challenges encountered by first-semester students at Politeknik Negeri Banjarmasin in comprehending written material. Employing a descriptive quantitative approach, the study aims to identify the most daunting aspects of reading comprehension. A reading comprehension assessment comprising 40 multiple-choice questions, administered via Google Form, was utilized to gather data. Analysis revealed that students encounter significant hurdles in this domain. Across all question types, spanning the five facets of reading comprehension, difficulty levels were consistently high. Particularly, questions assessing the determination of the main idea posed the greatest challenge, with 60% of students struggling in this area, followed by making inferences (44%), locating references (41%), understanding vocabulary (36%), and grasping detailed information (34%). Notably, identifying the main idea emerged as the most formidable task, whereas discerning detailed information proved relatively less challenging. These findings serve to highlight areas for improvement in understanding main ideas and inform strategies aimed at enhancing comprehension skills.

The Effects of Literature Circles on Students’ Reading Comprehension Skills

This experimental research study was conducted to determine the effects of literature circles on 2nd year baccalaureate students’ reading comprehension skills. The sample consisted of two classes of second year baccalaureate Arts stream students studying at the same public high school. The classes which were chosen for either the experimental and control group were pretested using a reading comprehension text test. The treatment lasted for a period of eight weeks. After the experiment, participants were then post-tested using the same test scale. Students who underwent the treatment (literature circles) were randomly assigned to groups of seven or eight students, and were given a role to assume and a short story to read. After reading the story independently and completing their role sheets, students discussed the story within their small groups. The data collected were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistical analyses. The results of the study indicated that there was a positive effect of literature circles on reading comprehension skills (summarizing, inferencing, and paraphrasing); the experimental group gained higher scores on the short answer-test compared to the control group. The results were interpreted using the t-test for independent samples. The t-test revealed that the difference between students who were exposed to the use of literature circles and those who were taught in the ordinary way was significant.

Effects of reading fluency and comprehension supplemental education program (OKA2DEP) on the reading skills of middle school students with intellectual disabilities

This study investigated the impact of the Reading Fluency and Comprehension Supplemental Education Program (OKA2DEP) on enhancing the reading fluency and comprehension skills of middle school students with intellectual disabilities (IDs) in Turkey. We utilised a single-subject design, specifically the changing criterion design, to assess OKA2DEP efficacy. The study involved four middle school students with ID. The results demonstrated that OKA2DEP significantly improved the reading fluency and comprehension skills of the participants. Additionally, feedback on the program’s social validity indicated that both the participants and their teachers were pleased with the program’s outcomes. These findings suggest that OKA2DEP can serve as a valuable tool for reading instructors. By incorporating structured, evidence-based methods, teachers can enhance their instructional practices and better meet the diverse needs of their students with ID.

USE OF SHORT ENGLISH MOVIES WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLED ON IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF ELEVENTH GRADE

Reading in English provides learners with the opportunity to develop their vocabulary, improve their comprehension skills. In this research, the writer wants to know the significant effect on students’ reading comprehension with using short English movies with English subtitled. This research used a quantitative method with quasi- experimental design. The population in this research were eleventh grade students from SMK Gemilang Modernland. During data collection, the writer gave a pre-test and post-test which included a total of five essay questions. The writer used IBM SPSS version 25 to analyze the data. The results of the research showed that the data were not normally distributed, and the data were homogeneous. Hypotheses testing used non-parametric statistics, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test which indicated that, Ha is accepted, and Ho is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using short English movies with English subtitled in improving students’ reading comprehension at eleventh grade students of SMK Gemilang Modernland in the Academic Year 2023/2024.

ENGLISH SPECIFIC PURPOSES PERSPECTIVE: IDENTIFYING ENGLISH LANGUAGE NEEDS OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING STUDENTS

The development of effective English language proficiency among Guidance and Counselling students is crucial for their academic success and future professional endeavours. However, there is a gap in the literature concerning the specific language needs and preferences of this student population within the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP). This study aims to identify the essential English sub-skills required by Guidance and Counselling students currently enrolled in the second semester of the 2022–2023 academic year, encompassing listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Employing a descriptive quantitative method, data was collected through an online questionnaire administered to 53 students. The findings highlight the importance of listening comprehension skills, with 79.3% recognizing the value of understanding lectures and classmates during English lessons. Additionally, the study emphasizes the significance of proficient speaking abilities for facilitating dialogues, with 66.7% valuing discussions on general and current topics with classmates. Furthermore, the ability to critically analyse internet articles (64.4%) emerged as the most valued reading skill for evidence-based practice and cross-cultural sensitivity. Lastly, the participants most recognized the importance of writing skills for conducting group research in English (56.3%). Overall, the study underscores the multidimensional nature of English language proficiency required for Guidance and Counselling students and the need for an integrated approach to language education that fosters well-rounded competence. By addressing these language needs, educational institutions can better prepare students for the communicative demands of their future roles as counsellors.

Integration of Augmented Reality and Modeling Techniques in Dynamic Systems for Teaching Theorems and Demonstrations in University Mathematics Courses: A Differential Equations-Based Approach and Its Applications.

Teaching theorems and proofs in mathematics at the university level poses a considerable challenge due to their high abstraction and conceptual complexity. Augmented reality (AR) emerges as an innovative tool that transforms learning by facilitating the visualization and understanding of complex mathematical concepts, particularly in the realm of differential equations, which are fundamental for modeling dynamic systems. This technology allows students to interact with three-dimensional representations, enhancing their comprehension and analytical skills by visualizing the effects and solutions of equations in real time. Despite technological advancements in education, traditional teaching methods remain static and abstract, limiting the assimilation of concepts. The research employed a quantitative approach and a documentary methodology to analyze the effectiveness of integrating AR and modeling techniques, providing data that evidences their positive impact on academic performance. A thorough review of relevant literature was conducted, consolidating a theoretical framework that highlights the importance of these emerging technologies. The findings suggest that implementing AR in the classroom not only improves knowledge retention but also enriches the discussion on mathematics education in higher education.

EXTENDING THE CONCEPT LEARNING STATAGEY TO INCREASE THE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION AND THEIR SELF-DETERMINATION

This study set intended to determine whether or not students' reading comprehension may be improved by using the concept learning method technique. This study used a mixed method of methodology. Triangulation—questionnaires, interviews, and documentation—was used as a data collection method. The author employed data reduction, display data, and conclusion or verification data to analyze the data. Based on the conducted research, the study's conclusion was: (1) Based on the results of the questionnaire and interview, it can be concluded that using the Concept Learning Strategy technique in the learning process was beneficial. When studying reading comprehension, the idea learning strategy technique is more effective than the traditional teaching approach. Furthermore, there existed a discrepancy in the reading proficiency of students instructed through the concept learning strategy approach when analyzed from the perspective of self-determination. Additionally, there existed a relationship between the concept learning strategy approach and self-determination concerning students' reading comprehension when teaching reading comprehension skills through the principled learning strategy.

The Effect of English Podcast on ESL Students Listening Comprehension Skills

This study aims to evaluate the effect of using English podcasts on the listening comprehension skills of ESL (English as a Second Language) students using a pre-experimental one-group pretest post-test design. The sample consisted of 35 ESL students. The students were given a listening comprehension test before the intervention (pretest) to measure their initial skills. During a four-week period, the students were regularly exposed to English podcasts selected based on difficulty level and relevance to the curriculum. After the intervention period, the same listening comprehension test was administered as a post-test to measure changes in listening skills. The collected data were analyzed using a paired t-test to determine the significance of the difference between pretest and post-test scores. The results showed a significant increase in students' listening comprehension scores after the podcast intervention (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that regular use of English podcasts can improve ESL students' listening comprehension skills. This study suggests that podcasts can be an effective tool in language learning, particularly in enhancing listening skills. The practical implication of this research is to encourage educators to integrate podcasts into their teaching methods. Further research is recommended to address the limitations of this study design and explore other factors that may influence the results.

Situation awareness information requirement for marine engine room monitoring at the future shore control center

Information integration for explicit comprehension can be highly challenging in a large-scale system with interconnected equipment under the influence of the environment. This presents a great challenge in acquiring and maintaining situation awareness during the transition from traditional to remote and, eventually, to autonomous operation. However, the maritime industry appears to approach situation awareness in a highly restricted manner that focuses on visual and navigational awareness only, resulting in no support system for engine room monitoring. This research conducted a goal-directed task analysis with thirty-one subject matter experts, with an average sea experience of 9.78 years, to investigate situation awareness in the engine room. As a result, the situation awareness information requirements for nine machineries and twelve systems are developed. The findings reveal that numerous perception elements, and their complex combinations, for higher-level awareness comprise situation awareness, and situation awareness deterioration is highly likely, due to the replication or reproduction of ship sense and expanded system coverage to compensate for the lack of marine engineers on ships. This research proposes that presenting higher-level situation awareness information in consideration of schema instantiation could be a promising alternative to developing and optimising the situation awareness support system for engine room monitoring at the future shore control center. Comparing Realities: A Study on the Impact of Virtual Reality versus Paper-Based Reading on Higher Education Students' Comprehension Skills

Virtual Reality (VR) stands at the forefront of transformative educational technologies in the 21st century, promising to redefine traditional learning paradigms. This research delves into the impact of VR on higher education students' Reading Comprehension (RC) skills, contrasting it with conventional paper-based reading environments. By conducting a comparative analysis of RC skills among students engaged in reading a selected narrative through VR glasses and those using a paper-based format, this study offers valuable insights into the efficacy and challenges of VR in enhancing reading comprehension. A cohort of 98 undergraduate students participated in this study, which employed a mixed-methods research approach to scrutinize the differences in RC outcomes between the experimental (VR) and control (paper-based) groups. The findings reveal a notable disparity in RC scores, with the control group outperforming their VR counterparts, highlighting the need for further investigation into the obstacles faced by students when reading in a VR setting. Qualitative analysis sheds light on the underlying reasons for the diminished RC levels observed in the VR group, providing a nuanced understanding of the interaction between medium and comprehension. The implications of this research are far-reaching, offering crucial guidance to educational technologists, curriculum designers, policy makers, and educators contemplating the integration of VR into educational frameworks. By identifying the constraints and potential of VR in reading instruction, this study paves the way for optimizing VR-based learning environments to foster higher levels of reading comprehension among students.

Pola Konsumsi Berita dalam Era Digital: Perbandingan Preferensi Generasi Z Terhadap Sumber Berita Tradisional dan Modern

People interaction has changed along with internet development. Digital news (internet-based) is beginning to alter classical ones. The development of social media and other digital platforms is a result of the Internet development. Reading comprehension and audience skills are undoubtedly impacted by this, particularly for Generation Z because of shifting preferences for news-based-content consumption. By comparing Generation Z's preferences for classical and digital news sources, this study aims to comprehend the trends of news consumption in the digital age. This study used a quantitative approach using a descriptive methodology by employing a valid and reliable questionnaire to collect data that were then randomly distributed to 85 communication science students in semesters 2, 4, 6, and 8. The study's findings explain why communication science students do not vary significantly from other Generation Z students in terms of their preferences for news sources or how they consume them. However, since they study communication science, they are more astute when consuming news from contemporary sources that often include false information or aren't grounded in reality.

Implementing Extensive Reading with Wattpad to Improve English Students Reading Comprehension at Senior High School Level

Reading comprehension is important, but low interest among middle school students has led to further research. Using the extensive reading method with Wattpad can improve students' reading skills significantly. This research aims to improve middle school students' reading comprehension by integrating Wattpad as a learning medium, offering an alternative method in English language education. This research uses statistical analyzes such as normality, homogeneity, Howell game post hoc, and Welch's test. This research used a quasi-experimental design with the experimental group using Wattpad and the control group using traditional methods. A quasi-experimental design was chosen because there are external variables that are beyond the researcher's control. The research subjects consisted of two groups: the experimental group received extensive reading treatment with Wattpad, and the control group used traditional methods. . Analysis of this research data confirms the effectiveness of extensive reading with Wattpad. Statistical tests show normality, homogeneity, and significant differences between the experimental group and the control group. These findings are in line with previous research which shows that extensive reading significantly improves students' comprehension skills. In conclusion, this research provides strong evidence that extensive reading with Wattpad has a positive impact on comprehension student reading.
