Experiences of Teaching English to a Deaf University Student

The present research reports the perspective of teachers' experiences in teaching a deaf university student. The main objective is to analyze teachers' experiences in teaching English to a deaf student in the Pedagogy of National and Foreign Languages major of the sixth semester at the Technical University of Cotopaxi, Ecuador in the year 2023-2024. This study had a qualitative approach. Three interviews were used to obtain data. The first was the teacher interview adapted from Sultanbeova. The second was the interpreter interview adapted from Mazoue. These two interviews were conducted to triangulate information and corroborate the data provided by teachers. The population was 4 teachers who were teaching in the sixth semester of the Pedagogy of National and Foreign Languages course at the Technical University of Cotopaxi and the Interpreter of sign language. This population was selected by the "Sampling Method. The results showed that teachers had positive experiences but difficulties in the teaching process. Among the positive experiences, it was shown that they used the appropriate methodology, techniques, and strategies to teach a deaf student. On the other hand, the teachers had difficulties because they did not know sign language and had no previous experience with deaf students. Another difficulty was to ensure the teaching process because the deaf college student has a low level of English, which complicated the process

VIVÊNCIA DAS ESTUDANTES DE ODONTOLOGIA DA FACULDADE DO AMAZONAS – IAES NO PROJETO DE EXTENSÃO REFERENTE ÀS PRÁTICAS MULTIDISCIPLINARES EM ODONTOLOGIA HOSPITALAR – UM RELATO DE EXPERIÊNCIA

Introduction: The role of the university is to train critical, reflective and ethical professionals. In this context, as an educational strategy, aligning theoretical teaching with practice, this experience took place at the Hospital and Emergency Room 28 de Agosto. The study was carried out by undergraduate students of the Dentistry course, in their sixth semester, with the practice taking place on two days a week, monthly, with a total duration of eight hours. The activities included lectures to patients, such as oral hygiene care and intraoral examinations, under the supervision of Prof. MSc. Guilherme Ferreira. Hospital Dentistry is a consolidated specialty in the care of hospitalized patients, encompassing a multidisciplinary approach and dental interventions. The care structure at the hospital was organized, ensuring safety and comfort for patients. In the Intensive Care Unit, there was one intubated patient, receiving continuous monitoring, and the other patients demonstrated good health. This experience report aims to share the experience acquired in the practice of Hospital Dentistry, highlighting the multidisciplinary work, the application of the relevant legislation and the challenges faced. Methodology: Descriptive in nature, providing an insight into the dental practices applied in the hospital environment – ​​description of the care provided, the clinical conditions of the patients, the multidisciplinary approaches and the difficulties faced by the professionals. Results and Discussion: Dental care provided to patients with various clinical conditions was observed, allowing an immersion in hospital dentistry. There was an opportunity to learn about hospital protocols and how they align with the hospital's standards and procedures, in relation to infection control and patient safety. The experience highlighted the complexity of dental care and highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration. Conclusion: The experience was an essential act for future professional practice, providing theoretical and practical learning, the opportunity to observe in a real clinical environment, to verify the complexity of hospital dental care and to adapt to the challenges of the environment.

Effectiveness of Online and Offline Learning: Comparative Study at English Education Department University of Mataram

This thesis aims to find the effective implementations between online and offline learning and determine which learning mode is effective at the University of Mataram. This study focused on comparing the effectiveness of different modes of learning implementations based on students’ perceptions. The subject of this study is the students at the English Education Department University of Mataram who had experience with online, offline, and blended learning in the class. The researcher analyzes data using mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) according to Sugiyono (2017). In this thesis researcher chose the sixth semester, that frequently used between online and offline learning with five classes, and chose one class to observe consisting of 27 students, the researchers collected the data using two different instruments, there are questionnaires researcher collected data related to the effectiveness of online and offline learning using a closed-ended questionnaire and the second one is an interview that’s researcher interviewed some students to know about students' perceptions of online and offline learning in the class. The result that the researcher compared was that offline learning was perceived to be a more effective learning mode this is shown by the higher agreement percentage in key aspects such as syllabus (58.3%), teaching method (44.4%), and discussion (48.1%). Moreover, the implementation of offline and online learning has various aspects in the learning process that can help a teacher and researcher in the future explore more pedagogical strategies and instruction design principles that promote effective offline and online learning experiences.

Challenge-based learning applied with computer engineering students

Society demands professionals with technical and cognitive skills applicable in workplace contexts. Consequently, university students must be acquainted with issues linked to the professional sphere, and it is necessary that innovative teaching strategies such as Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) be implemented to enable students to acquire skills for the working world. The purpose of this research was to ascertain the perception that 32 Computer Engineering students had regarding the application of CBL during the fifth and sixth semesters of their education. To achieve this, students were tasked with solving a challenge that involved three subjects: databases, software engineering, and internet programming. A holistic approach was followed, and the research was descriptive. Data were collected through an instrument consisting of five open-ended questions, querying students about advantages, disadvantages, encountered difficulties, experiences, and suggestions regarding the implemented strategy. A qualitative analysis technique was applied to the comments provided by the students. The results highlighted expressions of resistance to change, teamwork, and product delivery time, as well as learning difficulties on topics enabling them to solve the challenge. They also expressed organizational difficulties for teamwork. Additionally, they indicated that collaboration necessitated better group communication to proceed with the challenge and provided them with insight into professional practice. The students suggested further implementation of such strategies, preferably with projects proposed by themselves.

FACTORS INFLUENCING DIFFICULTIES IN SPEAKING ENGLISH OF SIX SEMESTER STUDENTS OF THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY KOTABUMI ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024

In this study, researchers examined and discussed the issue of factors that influence the speaking ability of sixth semester students majoring in English at Muhammadiyah University Kotabumi for the 2023/2024 academic year. Researchers used descriptive qualitative research methods. The instruments used in this research were documents and interviews. In this research, the data collection technique used by researchers was an in-depth interview technique with 6 sixth semester students. The results of this study illustrate that there are 5 factors that influence speaking ability. The five influencing factors are performance conditions (time pressure, planning, quality of performance and amount of support), effective factors (confidence and anxiety), listening ability and topical knowledge. The results in the working conditions factor consist of time pressure, there are 4 students, in planning there are 6 students, in the quality of performance there are 5 students and in the amount of support there are 2 students in problems. In the effective factor consisting of the self-confidence aspect, there are 3 students and in the anxiety aspect there are 6 students in trouble. In the listening ability and topical knowledge factors, there were 5 students who were low in listening ability and topical knowledge in English.

The Correlation of Watching English Movies Habit and Listening Skill

English movies are one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to develop listening skills. However, some students still find it difficult to understanding listening in teaching English. This research aims to determine whether there is a correlation between students’ habit in watching English movies and listening skill. The research method used quantitative correlational approaching involving 30 sixth semester students at English Education Department of IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo. The data collection was done using a questionnaire about watching habit to English movies and a listening test. The data analysis was performed using Pearson Product Moment Formula. The result showed that there is a strong positive correlation between habit in watching English movies and listening skill of English Education Department sixth semester students (r = 0.667). This indicates that the more intense the students’ habit in watching English movies, the better their listening skill.Keywords: Watching Habit, English Movies, Students’ Listening

Evaluation by app in smartphones of awake bruxism at the return of presential classes in two university centers

Background. The return to normality post-pandemic brought some inconveniences to the population, especially students. To evaluate the frequency of awake bruxism behaviors through the use of an app on smartphones in dental students returning to presential classes. Awake bruxism was evaluated with the creation of an app that according to the authors evaluates: relaxed jaw muscles, dental contact, jaw effort, clenching teeth and teeth grinding, 5 frequent oral conditions in the population. The frequency of awake/daytime bruxism (AB) in healthy individuals when comparing other populations with possible risk factors for additive bruxism (psychological factors, depression, suicide delusions, etc.), evaluating consequent clinical signs (fatigue, muscle pain, attritions and dental openings). Methods: The sample of three hundred (n=300) young adults legally enrolled in two Ecuadorian universities, the sample was selected among fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth semester students legally enrolled and who are attending Faculty of Dentistry classes in 2 different cities (Quito and Guayaquil). The app was configured to provide 20 alerts during the day x seven days a week, in real time. Results. The study obtained 95% reliability and 5% error in research, was used. The relaxation condition was present in all users, but 40% of the alerts were associated with jaw and tooth discomfort, 39% corresponded to the discomfort of mandibular clenching, and 24% corresponded to tooth contact. A direct significant association was found between the state of relaxation and nonrelaxation, with a high probability of reports related to nonrelaxation (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: Awake bruxism with the app was evaluated, identifying 5 behaviors such as: relaxed mandibular muscles, dental contact, mandibular effort, clenching and grinding teeth, frequent conditions in the population; reporting a state of mandibular relaxation, there is a high probability that a condition of nonrelaxation would be reported (p≤0.05).

Exploring Emotional Intelligence and College Adjustment in Final-Year College Students

This study aims to analyze the relationship between the dimensions of college adjustment and domains of emotional intelligence among final-year students (7th semester) with the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) curriculum. This research used a correlational method with a non-experimental quantitative approach. The study respondents were final-year students of the Faculty of Psychology, Padjadjaran University, who participated in MBKM activities outside the university during the sixth semester and resumed regular classes during the seventh semester. Among 72 eligible students, 67 participated in the study. The instruments used to measure college adjustment and emotional intelligence were the translated version of Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) and an instrument based on Goleman's emotional intelligence theory, respectively. Correlation tests were conducted using the Pearson Product Moment. The findings revealed a significant positive correlation between college adjustment and emotional intelligence (r = 0.410, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the analysis proved correlations among certain dimensions of college adjustment and domains of emotional intelligence. The implications highlight the role of MBKM activities in enhancing students' skills to support their adaptation and emotional intelligence.

A GRAMMATICAL ERROR ANALYSIS ON THE TRANSLATION OF SIXTH SEMESTER STUDENTS ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM OF STIT IBNU RUSYD TANAH GROGOT

The objectives of the study are to know the most common grammatical errors made by the sixth semester students of English Education study program, STIT Ibnu Rusyd Tanah Grogot in translation recount text, and to identify the causes of the errors. The sample of this research 10 students. The method which is used in this research is descriptive analysis. Firstly, students were given the text in Bahasa about recount text. Afterwards, the data were collected, identified, and then classified based on grammatical classification. The result of the study showed that The most common errors made by sixth semester students of English Education study program in the level of grammar were Misformation (regularization). First, the frequency of misformation (regularization is 260 errors under the percentage 69,5 % of total errors. Second, the total error of omission (content of morphemes is 81 errors under the percentage 21,7 %. The third is 10 errors or 2,7 % from misformation (archi-forms), 9 errors or 2,4 % from addition (simple), 6 errors or 1,6% from addition (double marking), 5 errors or 1,3 % from misformation (alternating-forms), 2 errors or 0,5 % from omission (grammatical of morphemes) and 1 errors or 0,3 % from misordering. However, there are no errors in addition (overgeneralization). The errors were suspected because they were unappropriate with the learning style. It still confused the students which one the learning style that appropriate with theirself in learning grammar. RELIGIOUS MODERATION LEVELS AMONG THE STUDENTS OF ISLAMIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT IN THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION AND TEACHER TRAINING AT UIN MATARAM

The issue of intolerance on campus is a compelling subject for study today, particularly within the Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam: PAI) programmes under the Ministry of Religion, which should exemplify a positive attitude towards religious moderation. This research aims to examine the level of religious moderation among Islamic students of the Religious Education programme. In particular, the study describes the level of religious moderation of 2021 batch students of the Islamic Religious Education programme at the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Mataram. To assess the level of religious moderation among the students, the researchers used a descriptive qualitative research method. Data were collected through interviews, observation and documentation. The research findings indicate that religious moderation is an attitude and effort to establish religion as a principle for avoiding extreme positions and consistently seeking middle ground in uniting society. The level of religious moderation among the students of the 2021 batch (sixth semester) of the Islamic Religious Education programme can be classified as high, as evidenced by their effective implementation of the religious moderation indicators. These indicators consist of four elements: national commitment, tolerance, anti-violence stance, and accommodation of local culture.

Students’ Experience of Online Interpreting Learning with Native Speakers

Interpreting is one of the skills that is very necessary in global communication. The use of digital technology and web-based technology in interpreting classes has been widely used in Indonesia, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Learning interpreting is very challenging, especially directly with native speakers and done using e-learning. This research aims to describe the experience of online interpreting learning with native speakers from the student's perspective regarding the problems and advantages of this learning method. This research was qualitative in nature, involving all sixth semester students in the English Literature study program who took Interpreting Workshop course totaling 25 students. Data were obtained through observation and questionnaires. The finding of the study shows learning interpreting online with native speaker has several advantages as well as it has less psychological impact. It is hoped that after finding problems, solutions can be found to overcome these problems and utilize the advantages of this learning method to maximize learning outcomes.

Learning styles and test anxiety in nursing students.

Test anxiety has always been a common problem among students, which may be influenced by various factors such as learning styles. Considering the high prevalence of test anxiety in nursing students, the present study investigated the relationship between their learning styles and test anxiety. The present research was a correlational descriptive study conducted in January of 2023, in which 235 students from the first to sixth semesters in two nursing schools affiliated with Zanjan University of Medical Sciences were selected by stratified random method. The data collection tools included demographic questionnaires, Kolb's learning styles, and Sarason's test anxiety, completed by the self-report method. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics by SPSS (v. 26). The mean test anxiety score in students was 28.30 ± 3.56, which showed a high level of test anxiety, and most of them had a divergent learning style (32.2%). The highest mean of test anxiety was among students with divergent learning styles. Also, the relationship between learning styles and test anxiety is statistically significant. The LSD test for more detailed information showed that the level of test anxiety with divergent learning styles is significantly higher than those with convergent learning styles (P < 0.05). The findings showed that students with divergent learning styles suffer the highest test anxiety level. Considering that most nursing students participating in this research had divergent learning styles, it can be one reason for their high test anxiety. Because students with divergent learning styles mainly learn through seeing and experiencing, one of the solutions to reduce test anxiety in these students is to use observational learning methods as much as possible during teaching. Holding anxiety control and management workshops before the exam by psychological experts can be considered by educational managers.

Correlation between Students’ Self-Confidence and Speaking Ability

The title of this research is “THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENT'S SELF-CONFIDENCE AND SPEAKING ABILITY”. The objective of the research is to find out whether there is significant correlation or not between student’s self-confidence and speaking ability of sixth and eighth semester student of 2022-2023 academic year English Language Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember. The researcher use correlational research, quantitative nonexperimental research. The sample of this study is 33 students from sixth and eighth grade semester English Language Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember, which consists of 16 students from 6th semester and 17 students from 8th semester. The collecting data technique used a speaking test and a questionnaire. The results of this study show that there is a significant relationship between self-confidence and speaking ability.

The Relationship between The Big Five Personality and Student’s Time Management

This study aims to determine whether there is the relationship between The Big Five Personality on students’ time management. This study also explores The Big Five Personality each traits, which consists of neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness on student’s time management. The approach used is quantitative method. The data collection tool uses The Time Management Scale and The Big Five Factor Inventory. The population in this study were college students of Universitas Muria Kudus. The number of samples collected was 59 college students in their sixth semester. The data analysis method consisted of normality test, homogeneity test, and hypothesis testing with Pearson Corellation. The results of the analysis revealed a significant and positive relationships between The Big Five Personality on students’ time management. However, further correlation and regression analysis revealed neuroticism as the most predictive student’s time management but revealed a non-significant relationship. Additionally, only conscientiousness trait showed a significant relationship with student’s time management.

Competencia Intercultural en los estudiantes de Traducción e Interpretación: conocimientos teóricos, conocimientos operativos y sensibilidad cultural

Intercultural competence represents an essential part of a translator/interpreter’s training, as it enables effective communication between languages and cultures. This paper is aimed at measuring the intercultural competence of Translation and Interpreting students at a Peruvian university in three dimensions: theoretical knowledge, operational knowledge and cultural sensitivity. For this purpose, descriptive research was conducted and 3 instruments were elaborated and applied to a sample of 58 students of the Translation and Interpreting program: students of the sixth and seventh semester who begin the translation and interpreting workshops, and students of the tenth semester who are about to graduate. The results show that students had high scores in cultural sensitivity, medium-high scores in theoretical knowledge and low scores in operational knowledge, where there were important differences in the ability to identify cultural references and verbalize translation strategies. Therefore, it might be concluded that students are in the process of acquiring intercultural competence and, enhancing their learning in this area requires textual exercises that expose them to diverse cultural manifestations from the dominant and minority cultures.

Analysis of Creativity and Critical Thinking Skills Through Project-Based Learning of Smart Solar Panel System

The challenges of today's world of work are very complex. Not only abilities based on grades on paper but other supporting abilities must also be possessed by graduates. In this era, graduates are expected to have other skills to support their academic abilities. These skills are known as 21st-century skills. This research aims to determine the level of creativity and critical thinking of students in the sixth semester of the Electrical Engineering Education Study Program. Analysis of these two skills is carried out through project-based learning, taking the project focus on smart solar panels. The selection of research focus is based on bibliometric analysis, where in the last 10 years, research related to project-based learning on renewable energy for creativity analysis and critical thinking still needs to be carried out. The research method used in this research is descriptive research with a qualitative and quantitative approach. The data collection process was carried out through direct observation in the field and also through assessment sheets by colleagues and lecturers. Based on the results of data processing, results were obtained which showed that project-based learning was suitable for analyzing critical thinking skills and also honing creativity.

Students’ Perception in Reading English Novel

The objective of this research is researcher conducted several indicators that in improving students' language and cultural awareness. The researcher used descriptive-quantitative research where the data gained from the questionnaires. The population of the research was the sixth semester of English Education FKIP Unismuh Makassar. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling technique there were 20 students.The result showed that mostly students perceived that reading novel can make it easier for students to understand language improvement and cultural awareness based on the values showed in table 4.11 is 5% disagree and 95% Partially agree to Strongly Agree in their daily activities. It means that, language improvement and cultural awareness of students can be increased through Reading English Novels.It was concluded that there was an improvement in students' writing skills related to content and organization writing skills in the use of tutorial video.

Peran Mata Kuliah Microteaching Dalam Mengembangkan Keterampilan Dasar Mengajar Mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Sejarah STKIP Sinar Pancasila

Microteaching is one of the courses that must be programmed by all students in the history education study program, in the sixth semester as a prerequisite before students go to school to carry out practical field experiences. The micro teaching course is a very vital activity for every student at the Teaching Faculty, and fulfills the need to be able to position himself completely and professionally in the teaching field. The aim of this microteaching course is to train basic teaching skills and prepare students in the history education study program as prospective teachers to face full teaching work in the classroom by having the knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes as professional teachers. The role of lecturers in microteaching courses and student activity in learning activities is very important. In Micro Teaching learning activities, there are 10 basic skills that are really needed by a prospective teacher, including, 1) skills to open learning, 2) skills to explain, 3) skills to provide variations, 4) skills to ask questions, 5) skills to guide group discussions, 6) skills in guiding group discussions, 6) small group and individual teaching skills, 7) class management skills, 8) reinforcement skills, 9) skills in using media or tools, and 10) skills in closing learning. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, where the data obtained is processed in narrative form.

An Analysis of Writing Assignments Through The Critical Thinking Skills in The Sixth Semester of English Department UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi

The purpose of the research was to find out the implementation of the indicators of critical thinking skills in the writing assignments of sixth-semester students in the English department. This analysis involved an in-depth understanding of writing structure, language choices, and students' ability to formulate arguments critically. The research proved useful for increasing knowledge about pedagogical writing and providing an in-depth analysis of students' writing assignments. This research was a quantitative descriptive analysis method research. The population of this research were all of the students in the Sixth semester of English Department UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi year 2022/2023. According to the findings of the study, students showed inadequate critical thinking skills while creating 17 specific sub-indicators with scores below of 50%. It was found that students encountered difficulties when writing a thesis assignment. It means that the majority of students were unable to organize thoughts into thesis writing assignments.

Exploring the Impact of Technology in Enhancing English Reading Skill

This research sought to investigate the influence of technology on improving English reading proficiency among students in the sixth semester of English instruction at Dong Nai Technology University. This research used a qualitative descriptive methodology and utilized purposive sampling. The research included a total of 34 individuals. Data is collected using observation, interview, and documentation methods. The study revealed that the majority of kids felt at ease using the new technology to enhance their reading abilities. The need to acquire knowledge in the modern day is driven by the reliance on technology. The statement is corroborated by the outcome of the interview. The students said that using e-books is more convenient than physical books due to their compatibility with various devices such as smartphones. Furthermore, the documentation serves the purpose of incorporating the data obtained via observation and interviews. Ultimately, technology has a positive influence on enhancing kids' proficiency in reading.
