Spraying drones: efficacy of integrating an avian repellent with drone hazing to elicit blackbird flock dispersal and abandonment of sunflower fields

Multiple management strategies exist to combat bird damage to agriculture. We explored combining two tools, drones as frightening devices and an avian repellent, to assess effectiveness of an integrated method to deter large flocks on complex landscapes. We evaluated the ability of a spraying drone (DJI Agras MG‐1P) deploying Avian Control (i.e. active ingredient: methyl anthranilate; hereafter MA) or water to elicit abandonment, flock reductions, latency to return, and behavioral changes of blackbirds (Icteridae) foraging in sunflower Helianthus annuus. Following hazing and spraying (MA = 32; water = 32 trials), the percent of flocks abandoning, partially abandoning, or remaining was 56%, 31%, and 13% for MA and 50%, 25%, and 25% for water, respectively. Following full abandonment, 14% more flocks returned following MA (83%) than water (69%), averaging 3.96 min ± 3.51 (SD) to return (MA = 4.12 min ± 4.03; water = 3.73 min ± 2.68). When reduction occurred, average decline was 47% ± 35 (SD) with MA and 44% ± 39 (SD) with water. Site conditions impacted the ability to maneuver the drone and observe flock behaviors, potentially resulting in variables other than treatment explaining the probability of abandonment and flock reduction. When controlling for flock size, number of lift‐offs following water treatments (0.23 min−1 ± 0.17 SD) was statistically less than the pre‐hazing period (0.43 min−1 ± 0.28 SD), however no relationship existed for MA treatments (post: 0.29 min−1 ± 0.32 SD; pre: 0.31 min−1 ± 0.20 SD). This difference may be due to a longer latency to return, decreasing the post‐hazing time period, or flightier birds after MA exposure. We found eight mins of hazing, and a 9‐l tank of repellent, was insufficient to elicit differences between water and repellent applications. We suggest extended hazing or additional negative stimuli (e.g. multiple drones, increased repellent) to increase efficacy.

Effect of spatially varying earthquake ground motions on seismic response of a railway viaduct considering multiple site configurations

Currently, it is admitted that extended structures are subjected to spatially varying earthquake ground motions. It has been recognized that the causes of this variability are time delay at each support of the structure, coherency loss effect caused by the propagation of seismic waves and local site effect. The spatial variation of local characteristics of the soil profile defines the site effect, which affects the amplitude and the frequency content of seismic ground motion. The main objective of this work is to provide comparative results and evaluate the variation of the dynamic response of a bridge adopting varying characteristics of soil foundation. Based on the density spectral method, an efficient simulation method of spatially varying earthquake ground motions is developed. The simulation of spatially variable seismic ground motions is performed for different locations on the ground surface with varying site conditions. According to of soil classification described in seismic codes, four different soil configurations were considered for generating sixty-four displacement time series. Several dynamics analyses of a bridge to three cases of spatially variable seismic ground motions, besides the uniform case, are made. The results of this study indicate that depending on soil configurations beneath each support, the seismic response may vary significantly.

Investigation of Unsafe Construction Site Conditions Using Deep Learning Algorithms Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.

The rapid adoption of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the construction industry has revolutionized safety, surveying, quality monitoring, and maintenance assessment. UAVs are increasingly used to prevent accidents caused by falls from heights or being struck by falling objects by ensuring workers comply with safety protocols. This study focuses on leveraging UAV technology to enhance labor safety by monitoring the use of personal protective equipment, particularly helmets, among construction workers. The developed UAV system utilizes the tensorflow technique and an alert system to detect and identify workers not wearing helmets. Employing the high-precision, high-speed, and widely applicable Faster R-CNN method, the UAV can accurately detect construction workers with and without helmets in real-time across various site conditions. This proactive approach ensures immediate feedback and intervention, significantly reducing the risk of injuries and fatalities. Additionally, the implementation of UAVs minimizes the workload of site supervisors by automating safety inspections and monitoring, allowing for more efficient and continuous oversight. The experimental results indicate that the UAV system's high precision, recall, and processing capabilities make it a reliable and cost-effective solution for improving construction site safety. The precision, mAP, and FPS of the developed system with the R-CNN are 93.1%, 58.45%, and 27 FPS. This study demonstrates the potential of UAV technology to enhance safety compliance, protect workers, and improve the overall quality of safety management in the construction industry.

Turbulent Energy and Carbon Fluxes in an Andean Montane Forest—Energy Balance and Heat Storage

High mountain rainforests are vital in the global energy and carbon cycle. Understanding the exchange of energy and carbon plays an important role in reflecting responses to climate change. In this study, an eddy covariance (EC) measurement system installed in the high Andean Mountains of southern Ecuador was used. As EC measurements are affected by heterogeneous topography and the vegetation height, the main objective was to estimate the effect of the sloped terrain and the forest on the turbulent energy and carbon fluxes considering the energy balance closure (EBC) and the heat storage. The results showed that the performance of the EBC was generally good and estimated it to be 79.5%. This could be improved when the heat storage effect was considered. Based on the variability of the residuals in the diel, modifications in the imbalances were highlighted. Particularly, during daytime, the residuals were largest (56.9 W/m2 on average), with a clear overestimation. At nighttime, mean imbalances were rather weak (6.5 W/m2) and mostly positive while strongest underestimations developed in the transition period to morning hours (down to −100 W/m2). With respect to the Monin–Obukhov stability parameter ((z − d)/L) and the friction velocity (u*), it was revealed that the largest overestimations evolved in weak unstable and very stable conditions associated with large u* values. In contrast, underestimation was related to very unstable conditions. The estimated carbon fluxes were independently modelled with a non-linear regression using a light-response relationship and reached a good performance value (R2 = 0.51). All fluxes were additionally examined in the annual course to estimate whether both the energy and carbon fluxes resembled the microclimatological conditions of the study site. This unique study demonstrated that EC measurements provide valuable insights into land-surface–atmosphere interactions and contribute to our understanding of energy and carbon exchanges. Moreover, the flux data provide an important basis to validate coupled atmosphere ecosystem models.

A real-world adverse events study of rimegepant from the FAERS database

ABSTRACT Background The primary objective of this research is to conduct an exhaustive evaluation of rimegepant with the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) repository. Research design and methods This study downloaded the reporting files related to rimegepant from the second quarter of 2020 to the first quarter of 2024. Disproportionality analysis was utilized to explore the relationship between rimegepant and adverse drug events (ADEs). Results This study analyzed 6659 ADE reports associated with rimegepant as the primary suspected (PS) drug. In the disproportionate analysis of system organ classes (SOCs), the significant signal for rimegepant was general disorders and administration site conditions. On the preferred terms level, 35 ADEs were identified following the exclusion. The top 5 ADEs with high signal strengths were medication overuse headache, nasal edema, tension headache, performance status decreased, and motion sickness. The most frequent ADEs were nausea, feeling abnormal, abdominal pain upper, somnolence, and hypersensitivity. In addition, we need to pay attention to the ADEs not mentioned in the instruction and clinically significant: vertigo, hyperacusis, somnolence, Raynaud’s phenomenon, motion sickness, panic attack, and fear. Conclusions This study highlights previously unrecognized safety concerns associated with the use of rimegepant. These novel safety aspects suggest that while these treatments can be effective, additional risks may need further exploration.

Environmental impacts of mechanically stabilised earth walls

Mechanically stabilised earth (MSE) walls have gained widespread popularity in North America because of their cost-effectiveness and reliable performance. Although the use of carbon-intensive materials for MSE walls is significantly lower compared to conventional retaining walls like concrete gravity walls and cantilever walls, heavy earthwork and transportation activities are involved in the construction of MSE walls, which increase their carbon footprint. The intensity of construction and transportation activities need particular attention because these are heavily reliant on the combustion of fossil fuels. In this study, the environmental impacts of MSE walls, reinforced by two common types – steel strips and geogrid – are quantified using life cycle assessment (LCA). A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of (i) soil properties, (ii) material properties of reinforcement, (iii) applied load, (iv) design parameters, and (v) hauling distances of materials on the global warming impact of MSE walls. Based on the study, reference charts are developed for the purpose of quick estimation of global warming impact of MSE walls based on design dimensions, applied load, and site conditions.

Major moisture shifts in inland Northeast Asia during the last millennium

Abstract Previous paleoenvironmental data synthesis indicates that arid central Asia (“westerlies Asia”) and mid-latitude East Asia (“monsoonal Asia”) show anti-phased moisture variations over the last millennium. However, there are very few records from inland Northeast Asia, which obscures the spatial extent of or the boundary between the two domains and hinders the assessment of climate change impacts and consequences across the region. Here, we present a multi-proxy record that combines peat properties, plant macrofossils, and isotopic ratios of Sphagnum moss cellulose from a unique precipitation-fed peatland in northern Northeast China to fill this critical data gap. The results show major centennial-scale moisture anomalies at this site, with drier and wetter conditions during the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age, respectively, which resemble the pattern of moisture changes in “westerlies Asia”. During the period of rapid anthropogenic warming, the site is much drier, with isotopic evidence for threshold-like summer desiccation of peat-forming Sphagnum mosses. This study provides the long-term context and identifies the large-scale pattern of moisture variability in an inland region home to carbon-rich peatlands, forests, and permafrost soils, and highlights their potential vulnerability to future warming-enhanced drying that can be transmitted widely through atmospheric teleconnection.

Protecting a complex intertidal habitat in the severn estuary affected by jetty construction

This case-study presents a coastal engineering scheme that addressed a unique environmental challenge on a marine construction site. Artificially bunded reservoirs were constructed on the rocky shore of the Bristol Channel, United Kingdom, to mitigate the potential impact to ecological features of the Severn Estuary/Môr Hafren Special Area of Conservation resulting from the construction of a jetty at the Hinkley Point C construction site. The installation of piles irreversibly altered the natural supply of seawater from several large rock pools to Corallina officinalis (red seaweed) waterfalls, that the developer, EDF, was obliged to protect. Corallina can die within 30 minutes of drying out. Following rigorous topographic surveys of the foreshore, hydrodynamic modelling, and an evolution of protective measures, concrete structures were designed and installed to ensure the Corallina waterfalls were passively supplied with a constant flow of seawater throughout the tidal cycle. The artificial bunds had to be sympathetic to the natural environment while sufficiently durable to withstand the high-energy conditions of the intertidal site. A local wave buoy 13.5-year dataset shows that the scheme has withstood the two highest wave heights recorded, one of which was the third highest storm peak.

Pre-expanded Local Flaps: Optimal Choice for Repairing Defects Following Extensive Benign Tumor Resection in the Head and Face.

Treating extensive benign tumors of the head and face presents a longstanding challenge, necessitating efficacy at the lesion site, and postoperative esthetic considerations for the donor area. This study aims to explore the clinical outcomes of pre-expanded local flap reconstruction for extensive benign tumors of the head and face post resection. From March 2018 to March 2023, a total of 18 patients with extensive benign tumors of the head and face were admitted, including 13 cases of nevus, 2 cases of hemangioma, 2 cases of neurofibroma, and 1 case of verruca. Based on the location and size of the lesions, suitable local areas were selected for tissue expansion, and expanders were implanted for regular saline injections over 8 to 16 weeks. After reaching the desired expansion, resection of the head and facial tumors and local flap reconstruction were performed. Postoperatively, data on patients' information, tumor types, tumor area, expansion volume, postexpander complications, vascular condition after flap transfer, and donor site condition were collected. In this series of 18 patients, benign tumors of the head and face were completely repaired through 1 to 2 stages of tissue expansion surgeries. Postimplantation complications included hematoma in 1 case and infections in 2 cases, with one instance of expander infection leading to surgical failure. However, all other patients achieved adequate expansion, successful flap survival post-transfer, and experienced no other complications. Follow-up over 6 to 24 months showed no recurrence at the lesion sites, with flaps maintaining consistent color, texture, and thickness matching surrounding skin tissue. In addition, donor site healing was excellent, with no obvious surgical scars. Pre-expanded local flap reconstruction is an ideal method for repairing extensive benign tumors of the head and face postresection.

Artificial ground freezing for underground construction – a brief review of the theory, practice and challenge

Since Artificial ground Freezing (AGF) appeared in the 1880s in the mining sector in Europe, it has been used for various construction applications worldwide. In recent years, it has been increasingly popular in urban projects due to its versatility and applicability to complicated site conditions. So far, it has been used to stabilize substrata to nearly 1,000 m below the ground surface, which is considered not possible for many other ground improvement technologies. Due to the growth in field applications, the practice and theories related to AGF have become more mature in the most recent two decades. The improvement in understanding of this topic is a result of lessons that have been learned through numerous projects, as well as a variety of comprehensive studies that have been completed. This paper reviews the existing practice, the recent development on AGF and the challenges of AGF.

Climatic Effects on the Growth of Fagus sylvatica L. in Mixed Stands with Pinus sylvestris L. in Lithuania

Climate change and warming will potentially profoundly affect forest growth and yield. However, climate change is not only a threat but also an opportunity for tree species to be more productive or colonize new territories where previously they were fragmented or absent. European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is a dominant and significant tree species in European forests with a pronounced ability to grow on a great variety of sites and to form mixtures with other tree species due to its shade tolerance. So far, only a few studies have analysed its growth and reaction to changing climatic conditions outside its natural gradient in the north. The aim of this study was therefore to clarify the main growth patterns and tree ring formation characteristics of beech (outside their natural distribution) in mixed stands with Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) The analyses were carried out in two-layered stands in the western part of Lithuania with tree-ring data measured on stem disks collected at 1 m height that were available from shelter-cut thinning activities in a number of forest stands in the region. Our results show that higher temperatures during the summer months of July and August generally inhibited the radial growth of beech under given site conditions. In contrast, warmer late-autumn and cooler early-winter periods together with warmer springs positively affected the radial increments. Above-average precipitation during the vegetation period contributed to the beech producing additional amounts of radial increments. The increasing temperature trends of the summer months and decreasing monthly amounts of precipitation during the vegetation period in recent decades tend to have adverse effects on the ecological conditions for beech growth and vitality in Lithuania. Despite these results, the European beech successfully grows in the sample region and has produced 200 m3 ha−1 in the analysed stands.

Effects of Light Conditions on Tunnel Construction Workers’ Quality of Life and Work Productivity

Higher lighting intensity promotes workers’ productivity but few studies focus on the problems caused by lower lighting intensities at tunnel construction sites without natural light. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between light intensity and workers’ sleep quality, alertness, vitality, and work productivity through a theoretical structural equation model based on the literature review. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey, and 5792 valid responses were adopted for the analysis. First, the results showed that greater lighting intensity promoted workers’ productivity directly and indirectly through three mediators: sleep quality, alertness, and vitality. Then, the whole sample was classified into four groups: high intensity/high comfort, moderate intensity/moderate comfort, moderate intensity/low comfort, and low intensity/low comfort. The clustered results showed that the lighting conditions of tunnel construction sites were generally poor and that lighting comfort promoted workers’ productivity to some extent. Besides, the influence of lighting intensity on productivity declined with improved lighting conditions while the impact of lighting intensity on workers’ physiological and psychological status showed differing trends as lighting conditions varied. However, the relationships between workers’ physiological and psychological status and productivity remained stable regardless of the lighting conditions. The findings could provide a reference for developing corresponding measures to promote workers’ productivity.

Safety of Inclisiran: A Disproportionality Analysis from the EudraVigilance Database.

Introduction: The discovery of serine protease proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) has revolutionized pharmacological lipid-lowering treatments. The first PCSK9 antagonists (PCSK9-A), evolocumab and alirocumab, were approved in 2015. Targeting PCSK9 synthesis marked a major advancement in this field, leading to the development of inclisiran, a long-acting siRNA targeting PCSK9 mRNA. However, real-world safety data on this drug are still limited. Therefore, this study aims to provide a real-world safety evaluation of inclisiran, comparing its characteristics to those of PCSK9-As. Methods: A retrospective pharmacovigilance study was conducted using EudraVigilance (EV). Inclisiran-related individual case safety reports (I-ICSRs) from 01/01/2021 to 06/30/2023 were retrieved. ICSRs for evolocumab or alirocumab from 01/01/2015 to 06/30/2023 were collected as a reference group (RG). ADRs were classified using the MedDRA dictionary. Data were evaluated using descriptive and disproportionality analyses. Crude reporting odds ratio (ROR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used as disproportionality measures. Results: Of the 15,236 ICSRs, 3.7% (n = 563) involved inclisiran, with the rest in the RG. Most I-ICSRs involved female patients (51.7%) aged 18 to 64 (52.8%). The most-reported ADRs for inclisiran were "general disorders and administration site conditions" (n = 347) and "investigations" (n = 277). Significant disproportionality was found in I-ICSRs compared to the RG for "Myalgia" (ROR: 2.43; 95% CI: 1.94-3.04), "Low-density lipoprotein increased" (ROR: 11.95; 95% CI: 9.10-15.52), and "Drug ineffective" (ROR: 6.37; 95% CI: 4.64-8.74). Conclusions: The inclisiran safety profile aligns with the existing literature and pre-commercial data. However, further studies are needed to fully understand the observed differences with PCSK9-As.

Relations of the species wealth of adventive and aboriginal fractions of floras with the characteristics of climate and relief in the Middle Volga region

Overall, 34 local floras of vascular plants were analyzed at testing sites in the Middle Volga region with an area of 400 km2. Noticeable differences were revealed in the nature of correlations between the number of species of adventitious and native flora fractions and environmental factors: climate and relief. In the region, the number of native species is negatively related to air temperature, evaporation rates, and water deficit, while adventive species show a positive relationship with these characteristics. Adventive species are more often found in gently sloping lowlands in polygons characterized by increased elevation differences and drainage area. In general, adventitious species are more associated with semi-arid conditions in sites with relatively high ranges of environmental factors and standard deviation. Multiple regression showed that adventive species are more closely related to environmental factors than native species. In the region, adventive species are distributed predominantly in places (ecotopes) with increased environmental heterogeneity. An analysis of the relationships with environmental factors of the studied fractions may indicate that their distribution on the test sites is consistent, as a result of which they do not show opposition, which is also confirmed by the weak positive relationship between the richness of their species.

Key factors affecting project delivery system selection in the Chinese construction industry

This study aims to investigate the key factors owners consider when selecting a PDS, the importance degree of these factors, and the perception differences among owners, consultants, and contractors regarding these factors. Interviews and questionnaire surveys were used to determine the importance degree of each influencing factor. And perception differences of the influencing factors on PDS among the three subjects were calculated through SPSS 15.0. The findings show that the three subjects' perceptions of the importance degree of the economic attributes of the engineering project, engineering project complexity, sub-project construction interference degree, and delivery system preference were significantly different, while the perceptions of engineering project scale, investment control requirements, schedule requirements, quality requirements, risk preference, construction management capability, land acquisition, demolition and migration, construction site conditions, local policies and regulations, and construction market development level were insignificantly different. This research can help owners understand influencing factors on PDS selection from different dimensions. Valuable information was provided for owners to select an accurate and reasonable PDS, ultimately reducing project costs and facilitating project management. Additionally, this research complements previous research on PDS selection and proposes a new influencing factors framework by exploring the key factors affecting PDS selection and the perception differences between the three subjects.

The relationships between 2D and 3D green index altered by spatial attributes at high spatial resolution

Understanding the relationship between 2D and 3D green indices holds significant implications for governance, especially amid the escalating demand for urban green spaces during rapid urbanization. However, the existing studies reveal inconsistent results pertaining to the relationships between 2D and 3D green indices and lack a systematic examination of spatial attributes' influence on the relationships. This study addresses these gaps by 1) assessing the correlation between 2D and 3D green indices using high-resolution data, 2) identifying spatial attributes that alter the 2D-3D association, and 3) determining the thresholds of spatial attributes that significantly impact the 2D-3D relationships. The Moderation Model was initially introduced to evaluate the mechanisms within its respective field. High-resolution data was collected from a campus, focusing on key spatial attributes: tree cover density (TC), plot ratio (PR), and vegetation composition (VC). NDVI and GVI were chosen to represent the 2D and 3D green index. The results indicate a significant correlation between NDVI and GVI (R=0.478, p<0.005). TC was identified as the fundamental moderator of the association. A medium TC (32.46 %) was the threshold for a significant NDVI - GVI correlation. Only at low TC (0–10.82 %), interactive effects between spatial attributes were observed: VC (type (e)) substituted NDVI to affect GVI directly; Above a PR of 1.95, the correlation between NDVI and GVI diminishes. In general, NDVI cannot substitutes GVI in areas where TC is higher than 32.46 %, or in areas where TC is lower than 10.82 % with many tall buildings (higher than 8 floors). The findings innovatively reveal the dynamic variation and thresholds in the 2D-3D green index relationships based on site-specific attributes rather than the resolution of data. Practically, a decision-making tree of green index governance is then proposed for relevant stakeholders to choose according to different site conditions.

Safety Assessment of Gas Pipelines Crossing River through Hydrodynamic Analysis

Gas pipelines are buried and installed across rivers to supply the gas necessary for daily life. When crossing rivers, gas pipelines are typically installed on bridges; however, when installation on bridges is not feasible, the pipelines are buried in riverbeds. This study utilized both a one-dimensional model (HEC-RAS) and two-dimensional models (SMS) to simulate river flow and estimate the potential for scour and deposition around buried pipelines. The hydrodynamic simulations considered critical factors, including sediment transport, river discharge, and geological characteristics, to derive the maximum scour depth and assess the risk of pipeline exposure. The findings from the long-term and short-term simulations confirmed that riverbed changes due to natural hydrological events do not exceed the minimum burial depth standards, thereby ensuring pipeline safety. In addition, the study proposed specific reinforcement measures tailored to local site conditions, addressing concerns of continuous subsidence and ensuring long-term structural stability. This research offers important insights into pipeline risk management and contributes to the development of more effective regulatory standards for gas pipelines buried in riverbeds, enhancing both their safety and environmental sustainability

Распределение очагов инвазии литоральных моллюсков партенитами и личинками трематод в губах и заливах Мурманского побережья в мае–июне 2021 года

Species composition and geographical variation in the distribution of digenean parthenite and larvae in intertidal snails in the littoral zones along the Murmansk coast were examined. Four species of littoral gastropods (Littorina saxatilis, L. obtusata, L. littorea and Nucella lapillus) were investigated. We found 10 species of digeneans, of which 9 have marine birds as a final host. The exception was Podocotyle atomon which uses fish as a definitive host. Larvae of trematode Microphallus pygmaeus, M. piriformes and Podocotyle atomon are found everywhere on the Murmansk coast. The richest helminth fauna were recorded in the Kola Bay and in Ivanovskaya Bay, the poorest helminth fauna were recorded in Dvorovaya Bay. No pronounced trends in distribution of infection foci were noted. Trematode prevalence appears to be predominantly determined by local site condition favoring or hindering final host (birds and fishes) abundance.

Impact of Excavation on Adjacent Elevated Bridges and Optimization Analysis of Deformation Control

Based on the deep foundation pit project of the TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) complex of the Shaoxing North High-speed Railway Station, the influence of different construction stages on the deformation and inclination rate of the adjacent elevated bridge and its variation law are studied through field measurement and numerical simulation. The construction process is optimized by the method of reinforcement outside the pit and adjustment of preloaded axial force, and the influence of distance on elevated bridges is summarized. The results show that with the excavation of the foundation pit, the deformation of the bridge pier and bridge pile foundation gradually increases, and the deformation of the bridge piers is larger than that of the bridge pile foundations. As the depth of soil reinforcement outside the pit and the preloaded axial force increases, the maximum vertical displacement of the bridge pier and bridge pile foundations gradually decreases. The deeper the depth of soil reinforcement, the better the displacement control effect on the elevated bridge. In actual construction, it is recommended that the depth of reinforcement be taken as the excavation depth of the pit. It is obvious that the preloaded axial force is subject to the pit angle effect, and the appropriate value of the preloaded axial force should be selected according to the site conditions. The deformation of the bridge pier and bridge pile foundation generally shows a decreasing trend with the increase in the distance between the elevated bridge and the foundation pit. When the elevated bridge is close to the foundation pit, it will be affected by the pit angle effect, and the fluctuation will decrease. The conclusions drawn in the article can serve as the basis and reference for design and construction, and provide reference for similar projects.
