Synthesis and Characterisation of a New Class of Heterotrimetallic Isopropoxides of Strontium and Barium

New heterotrimetallic isopropoxides of the types {M2(OPr-i)9}M1{M11(OPr-i)5} (M = Zr, Sn(IV); M′ = Sr, Ba; M″ = Ti, Sn(IV)) and {Sn2(OPr-i)9}Sr{Al(OPr-i)4} have been synthesised for the first time by the single-pot reactions of metal isopropoxides (e.g., M1(OPr-i)2 (M′ = Sr, Ba), Ti(OPr-i)4, Sn(OPr-i)4.i-PrOH, or Al(OPr-i)3) in the desired molar ratios in refluxing benzene. All of these novel derivatives have been characterised by elemental analyses, molecular weight measurements, and spectroscopic [IR, NMR (1H, 13C, 27A1, 119Sn)] studies. Reactions of the derivative {Zr2(OPr-i)9}Ba{Sn(OPr-i)5} with alcohols (Me3CCH2OH and Me3COH) have been carried out to shed light on its possible structural features.

Rapid Synthesis of Hyperbranched Aromatic Polyetherimides

High molecular weight hyperbranched polyetherimides have been synthesized in a single-pot reaction in as little as 2.5 min from an easily synthesized and scalable AB2 monomer using a rapid catalytic arylation method. NMR integration experiments and model compound studies revealed a degree of branching (DB) of 67% for hyperbranched polyetherimide 4 relative to the expected statistical value of 50%. Molecular weights were determined by gel permeation chromatography in two different solvent systems and varied widely. The polymers are highly soluble in common organic solvents and are among the most thermally stable hyperbranched polymers yet prepared.

Synthesis of an extremely stable ceramic in the system Si/B/C/N using 1-(trichlorosilyl)-1-(dichloroboryl)ethane as a single-source precursor

A new material discovered in the Si/B/C/N system was found to remain in the amorphous state up to a very high temperature of 2000°C. This material, with the composition Si2B2N5C4, is the only material in this system which does not undergo any microstructural changes until such high temperatures. Furthermore, the substance shows an extremely high resistance to oxidation up to 1500°C. The synthesis of amorphous Si2B2N5C4 was achieved by using the novel single-source precursor 1-(trichlorosilyl)-1-(dichloroboryl)ethane (TSDE), which can be synthesized in high yields from inexpensive starting materials in a simple single pot reaction. Examination of the structural properties of the pyrolytic ceramic reveals a substructure consisting of tetrahedrally and trigonally-planar coordinated silicon and boron, respectively. Si-C- and B-C-bonds present in the molecular precursor could not be distinguished from SiN- and B-N-bonds in the fully pyrolized ceramic. EDX and X-ray-diffraction showed the material to have a homogeneous elemental distribution, and no phase separation could be detected.

The crystal structure of a novel dinuclear copper(II) complex, with the bridging ligand bis-1,3-(cis,cis-1,3,5-triaminocyclohexane)xylylidiene has been obtained; the complex was prepared using a single-pot reaction of copper(II) salts, isophthalaldehyde and cis,cis-1,3,5-triaminocyclohexane.

Boron Spirochelates Derived from Some Hydroxamic Acids and Carboxylic Acids

A number of boron spirochelates of the general formula B[R′CON(R)O]Y have been synthesized by the single-pot reaction of boric acid, a hydroxamic acid R′CON(R)OH and a carboxylic acid H2Y. The spirochelates have been characterized by elemental analyses, by IR, NMR (1H and 11B) and UV spectra and conductance measurements. They are non-electrolytes.
