Detection of electron paramagnetic resonance of two electron spins using a single NV center in diamond

An interacting spin system is an excellent testbed for fundamental quantum physics and applications in quantum sensing and quantum simulation. For these investigations, detailed information on the interactions, e.g., the number of spins and their interaction strengths, is often required. In this study, we present the identification and characterization of a single nitrogen vacancy (NV) center coupled to two electron spins. In the experiment, we first identify a well-isolated single NV center and characterize its spin decoherence time. Then, we perform NV-detected electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to detect surrounding electron spins. From the analysis of the NV-EPR signal, we precisely determine the number of detected spins and their interaction strengths. Moreover, the spectral analysis indicates that the candidates of the detected spins are diamond surface spins. This study demonstrates a promising approach for the identification and characterization of an interacting spin system for realizing entangled sensing using electron spin as quantum reporters.

An instructional lab apparatus for quantum experiments with single nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Hands-on experimental experience with quantum systems in the undergraduate physics curriculum provides students with a deeper understanding of quantum physics and equips them for the fast-growing quantum science industry. Here, we present an experimental apparatus for performing quantum experiments with single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. This apparatus is capable of basic experiments such as single-qubit initialization, rotation, and measurement, as well as more advanced experiments investigating electron–nuclear spin interactions. We describe the basic physics of the NV center and give examples of potential experiments that can be performed with this apparatus. We also discuss the options and inherent trade-offs associated with the choice of diamond samples and hardware. The apparatus described here enables students to write their own experimental control and data analysis software from scratch, all within a single semester of a typical lab course, as well as to inspect the optical components and inner workings of the apparatus. We hope that this work can serve as a standalone resource for any institution that would like to integrate a quantum instructional lab into its undergraduate physics and engineering curriculum.

Digital noise spectroscopy with a quantum sensor

We introduce and experimentally demonstrate a quantum sensing protocol to sample and reconstruct the autocorrelation of a noise process using a single-qubit sensor under digital control modulation. This Walsh noise spectroscopy method exploits simple sequences of spin-flip pulses to generate a complete basis of digital filters that directly sample the power spectrum of the target noise in the sequency domain, from which the autocorrelation function in the time domain, as well as the power spectrum in the frequency domain, can be reconstructed using linear transformations. Our method, which can also be seen as an implementation of frame-based noise spectroscopy, solves the fundamental difficulty in sampling continuous functions with digital filters by introducing a transformation that relates the arithmetic and logical time domains. In comparison to standard, frequency-based dynamical-decoupling noise spectroscopy protocols, the accuracy of our method is only limited by sampling and discretization in the time domain and can be easily improved, even under limited evolution time due to decoherence and hardware limitations. Finally, we experimentally reconstruct the autocorrelation function of the effective magnetic field produced by the nuclear-spin bath on the electronic spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, discuss practical limitations of the method, and avenues to further improve the reconstruction accuracy.

Using a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond to detect microwave magnetic field vectors at resonant frequency

This study introduces a method for reconstructing vector microwave magnetic fields using a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in locally strong effective fields with two different orientations in diamond, without the previously required external magnetic field. Due to the varying orientations of the effective fields, NV centers exhibit two distinct sets of switchable ground states. The resonant Rabi oscillations of an NV center in these two distinct states were utilized to reconstruct vector microwave magnetic fields. Remarkably, this technique achieves an angular resolution of 0.02 mrad/Hz. Overcoming the limitations inherent in previous practices of using NV ensembles, this breakthrough has the potential to substantially enhance both the spatial resolution and the sensitivity of microwave magnetic field imaging, a meaningful development for various scientific and technological applications.

Suppression of Pulsed Dynamic Nuclear Polarization by Many-Body Spin Dynamics.

We study a mechanism by which nuclear hyperpolarization due to the polarization transfer from a microwave-pulse-controlled electron spin is suppressed. From analytical and numerical calculations of the unitary dynamics of multiple nuclear spins, we uncover that, combined with the formation of the dark state within a cluster of nuclei, coherent higher-order nuclear spin dynamics impose limits on the efficiency of the polarization transfer even in the absence of mundane depolarization processes such as nuclear spin diffusion and relaxation. Furthermore, we show that the influence of the dark state can be partly mitigated by introducing a disentangling operation. Our analysis is applied to the nuclear polarizations observed in ^{13}C nuclei coupled with a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond [Randall etal., Science 374, 1474 (2021)SCIEAS0036-807510.1126/science.abk0603]. Our Letter sheds light on collective engineering of nuclear spins as well as future designs of pulsed dynamic nuclear polarization protocols.

Mapping a 50-spin-qubit network through correlated sensing

Spins associated to optically accessible solid-state defects have emerged as a versatile platform for exploring quantum simulation, quantum sensing and quantum communication. Pioneering experiments have shown the sensing, imaging, and control of multiple nuclear spins surrounding a single electron spin defect. However, the accessible size of these spin networks has been constrained by the spectral resolution of current methods. Here, we map a network of 50 coupled spins through high-resolution correlated sensing schemes, using a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. We develop concatenated double-resonance sequences that identify spin-chains through the network. These chains reveal the characteristic spin frequencies and their interconnections with high spectral resolution, and can be fused together to map out the network. Our results provide new opportunities for quantum simulations by increasing the number of available spin qubits. Additionally, our methods might find applications in nano-scale imaging of complex spin systems external to the host crystal.

Single-Shot Readout of a Solid-State Electron Spin Qutrit.

Quantum systems usually feature a rich multilevel structure with promising resources for developing superior quantum technologies compared with their binary counterpart. Single-shot readout of these high-dimensional quantum systems is essential for exploiting their potential. Although there have been various high-spin systems, the single-shot readout of the overall state of high-spin systems remains a challenging issue. Here we demonstrate a reliable single-shot readout of spin qutrit state in a low-temperature solid-state system utilizing a binary readout scheme. We achieve a single-shot readout of an electron spin qutrit associated with a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond with an average fidelity of 87.80%. We use this spin qutrit system to verify quantum contextuality, a fundamental test of quantum mechanics. We observe a violation of the noncontextual hidden variable inequality with the developed single-shot readout in contrast to the conventional binary readout. These results pave the way for developing quantum information processing based on spin qutrits.

Temperature Dependence of Photoluminescence Intensity and Spin Contrast in Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers.

We report on measurements of the photoluminescence properties of single nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond at temperatures between 4K and 300K. We observe a strong reduction of the PL intensity and spin contrast between ca. 10K and 100K that recovers to high levels below and above. Further, we find a rich dependence on magnetic bias field and crystal strain. We develop a comprehensive model based on spin mixing and orbital hopping in the electronic excited state that quantitatively explains the observations. Beyond a more complete understanding of the excited-state dynamics, our work provides a novel approach for probing electron-phonon interactions and a predictive tool for optimizing experimental conditions for quantum applications.

Variable bandwidth, high efficiency microwave resonator for control of spin-qubits in nitrogen-vacancy centers.

Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are attractive tools for sensing and quantum information. Realization of this potential requires effective tools for controlling the spin degree of freedom by microwave (mw) magnetic fields. In this work, we present a planar microwave resonator optimized for microwave-optical double resonance experiments on single NV centers in diamond. It consists of a piece of wide microstrip line, which is symmetrically connected to two 50Ω microstrip feed lines. In the center of the resonator, an Ω-shaped loop focuses the current and the mw magnetic field. It generates a relatively homogeneous magnetic field over a volume of 0.07 × 0.1mm3. It can be operated at 2.9GHz in both transmission and reflection modes with bandwidths of 1000 and 400MHz, respectively. The high power-to-magnetic field conversion efficiency allows us to produce π-pulses with a duration of 50ns with only about 200 and 50 mW microwave power in transmission and reflection, respectively. The transmission mode also offers capability for efficient radio frequency excitation. The resonance frequency can be tuned between 1.3 and 6GHz by adjusting the length of the resonator. This will be useful for experiments on NV-centers at higher external magnetic fields and on different types of optically active spin centers.

Experimental Investigation of Quantum Correlations in a Two-Qutrit Spin System.

We report an experimental investigation of quantum correlations in a two-qutrit spin system in a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond at room temperatures. Quantum entanglement between two qutrits was observed at room temperature, and the existence of nonclassical correlations beyond entanglement in the qutrit case has been revealed. Our work demonstrates the potential of the NV centers as the multiqutrit system to execute quantum information tasks and provides a powerful experimental platform for studying the fundamental physics of high-dimensional quantum systems in the future.

Toward the Speed Limit of High-Fidelity Two-Qubit Gates.

Most implementations of quantum gate operations rely on external control fields to drive the evolution of the quantum system. Generating these control fields requires significant efforts to design the suitable control Hamiltonians. Furthermore, any error in the control fields reduces the fidelity of the implemented control operation with respect to the ideal target operation. Achieving sufficiently fast gate operations at low error rates remains therefore a huge challenge. In this Letter, we present a novel approach to overcome this challenge by eliminating, for specific gate operations, the time-dependent control fields entirely. This approach appears useful for maximizing the speed of the gate operation while simultaneously eliminating relevant sources of errors. We present an experimental demonstration of the concept in a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond at room temperature.

Magnetometry based on the excited-state lifetimes of a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond

So far most well-established quantum sensing techniques based on the negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond utilize the recorded fluorescence intensity to detect the electronic spin states. However, the fluorescence intensity of a NV center is not only dependent on its spin state, but also affected by measurement issues, such as fluctuations of the excitation laser power and charge state transformation of the NV center. Instabilities in terms of output power or polarization changes in the laser source as well as sample drifts during a measurement are common factors that weaken the precision. Here, we demonstrate proof-of-principle of a sensing method making use of the excited-state lifetimes of a NV center for magnetometry experiments.

Nanoscale Vector AC Magnetometry with a Single Nitrogen-Vacancy Center in Diamond.

Detection of AC magnetic fields at the nanoscale is critical in applications ranging from fundamental physics to materials science. Isolated quantum spin defects, such as the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, can achieve the desired spatial resolution with high sensitivity. Still, vector AC magnetometry currently relies on using different orientations of an ensemble of sensors, with degraded spatial resolution, and a protocol based on a single NV is lacking. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a protocol that exploits a single NV to reconstruct the vectorial components of an AC magnetic field by tuning a continuous driving to distinct resonance conditions. We map the spatial distribution of an AC field generated by a copper wire on the surface of the diamond. The proposed protocol combines high sensitivity, broad dynamic range, and sensitivity to both coherent and stochastic signals, with broad applications in condensed matter physics, such as probing spin fluctuations.

Dynamically Encircling an Exceptional Point in a Real Quantum System.

The exceptional point, known as the non-Hermitian degeneracy, has special topological structure, leading to various counterintuitive phenomena and novel applications, which are refreshing our cognition of quantum physics. One particularly intriguing behavior is the mode switch phenomenon induced by dynamically encircling an exceptional point in the parameter space. While these mode switches have been explored in classical systems, the experimental investigation in the quantum regime remains elusive due to the difficulty of constructing time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in a real quantum system. Here we experimentally demonstrate dynamically encircling the exceptional point with a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The time-dependent non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are realized utilizing a dilation method. Both the asymmetric and symmetric mode switches have been observed. Our Letter reveals the topological structure of the exceptional point and paves the way to comprehensively explore the exotic properties of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians in the quantum regime.

Selective noise resistant gate

Realizing individual control on single qubits in a spin-based quantum register is an ever-increasing challenge due to the close proximity of the qubits resonance frequencies. Current schemes typically suffer from an inherent trade-off between fidelity and qubits selectivity. Here, we report on a new scheme which combines noise protection by dynamical decoupling and magnetic gradient based selectivity, to enhance both the fidelity and the selectivity. With a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, we experimentally demonstrate quantum gates with fidelity = 0.9 $\pm$ 0.02 and a 50 kHz spectral bandwidth, which is almost an order of magnitude narrower than the unprotected bandwidth. Our scheme will enable selective control of an individual nitrogen-vacancy qubit in an interacting qubits array using relatively moderate gradients of about 1 mG/nm.

Exploring 2D Synthetic Quantum Hall Physics with a Quasiperiodically Driven Qubit.

Quasiperiodically driven quantum systems are predicted to exhibit quantized topological properties, in analogy with the quantized transport properties of topological insulators. We use a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond to experimentally study a synthetic quantum Hall effect with a two-tone drive. We measure the evolution of trajectories of two quantum states, initially prepared at nearby points in synthetic phase space. We detect the synthetic Hall effect through the predicted overlap oscillations at a quantized fundamental frequency proportional to the Chern number, which characterizes the topological phases of the system. We further observe half-quantization of the Chern number at the transition between the synthetic Hall regime and the trivial regime, and the associated concentration of local Berry curvature in synthetic phase space. Our Letter opens up the possibility of using driven qubits to design and study higher-dimensional topological insulators and semimetals in synthetic dimensions.

Identification and Control of Electron-Nuclear Spin Defects in Diamond.

We experimentally demonstrate an approach to scale up quantum devices by harnessing spin defects in the environment of a quantum probe. We follow this approach to identify, locate, and control two electron-nuclear spin defects in the environment of a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. By performing spectroscopy at various orientations of the magnetic field, we extract the unknown parameters of the hyperfine and dipolar interaction tensors, which we use to locate the two spin defects and design control sequences to initialize, manipulate, and readout their quantum state. Finally, we create quantum coherence among the three electron spins, paving the way for the creation of genuine tripartite entanglement. This approach will be useful in assembling multispin quantum registers for applications in quantum sensing and quantum information processing.

Construction and operation of a tabletop system for nanoscale magnetometry with single nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

A single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a prime candidate for a solid-state quantum magnetometer capable of detecting single nuclear spins with prospective application to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at the nanoscale. Nonetheless, an NV magnetometer is still less accessible to many chemists and biologists as its experimental setup and operational principle are starkly different from those of conventional NMR. Here, we design, construct, and operate a compact tabletop-sized system for quantum sensing with a single NV center, built primarily from commercially available optical components and electronics. We show that our setup can implement state-of-the-art quantum sensing protocols that enable the detection of single 13C nuclear spins in diamond and the characterization of their interaction parameters, as well as the detection of a small ensemble of proton nuclear spins on the diamond surface. This article provides extensive discussions on the details of the setup and the experimental procedures, and our system will be reproducible by those who have not worked on the NV centers previously.

Reconstruction-Free Quantum Sensing of Arbitrary Waveforms

We present a protocol for directly detecting time-dependent magnetic field waveforms with a quantum two-level system. Our method is based on a differential refocusing of segments of the waveform using spin echoes. The sequence can be repeated to increase the sensitivity to small signals. The frequency bandwidth is intrinsically limited by the duration of the refocusing pulses. We demonstrate detection of arbitrary waveforms with $\sim 20 {\rm ns}$ time resolution and $\sim 4\mu{\rm T}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ field sensitivity using the electronic spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond.
