Apron Design for Light Airplanes

This paper presents information for the design of parking aprons for single engine and light twin-engine aircraft. Standard dimensions are suggested for laying out tie-downs, and various geometric configurations are analyzed. The operational functions of the apron are then reviewed with respect to their needs and with respect to each other.

Compact Microwave Refractometer for Use in Small Aircraft

A microwave refractometer has been developed for use in a Type L-20 ``Beaver'' single-engine light aircraft. A two-channel recording system is used providing simultaneous profile and turbulence records with rms noise levels of approximately 0.05 and 0.01 N unit, respectively. Power requirement is 25 amperes at 28 volts dc, and installation requires one-half hour for two men. No structural modification of the aircraft is required. The results of flight tests are presented.

A Statistical Guide for Accident Research, Illustrated by Application to Non-Air-Carrier Flying, 1949–51

Because of lack of information on flying time it is difficult to appraise the statistics published by the C.A.B. on frequencies of accidents of aircraft used in non-air-carrier flying. Comparison of relative frequencies, however, may still be a useful guide in accident research. This paper develops a rating index for this purpose, illustrates its application to six important single-engine aircraft used in non-air-carrier flying in 1949-51, and discusses the difficulties and dangers in the use of the index when applied to aircraft accidents. The technique may be found equally useful in other fields of accident research.
