Measurement of the differential cross section for neutral pion production in charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with the MicroBooNE detector

We present a measurement of neutral pion production in charged-current interactions using data recorded with the MicroBooNE detector exposed to Fermilab’s booster neutrino beam. The signal comprises one muon, one neutral pion, any number of nucleons, and no charged pions. Studying neutral pion production in the MicroBooNE detector provides an opportunity to better understand neutrino-argon interactions, and is crucial for future accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. Using a dataset corresponding to 6.86×1020 protons on target, we present single-differential cross sections in muon and neutral pion momenta, scattering angles with respect to the beam for the outgoing muon and neutral pion, as well as the opening angle between the muon and neutral pion. Data extracted cross sections are compared to generator predictions. We report good agreement between the data and the models for scattering angles, except for an over-prediction by generators at muon forward angles. Similarly, the agreement between data and the models as a function of momentum is good, except for an underprediction by generators in the medium momentum ranges, 200–400 MeV for muons and 100–200 MeV for pions. Measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable in deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at HERA

These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data.

Exploring the impact of high-precision top-quark pair production data on the structure of the proton at the LHC

The impact of recent LHC top-quark pair production single differential cross section measurements at 13 TeV collision energy on the structure of the proton is explored. In particular, the impact of these high-precision data on the gluon and other parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton at intermediate and large partonic momentum fraction x is analyzed. This study extends the CT18 global analysis framework to include these new data. The interplay between top-quark pair and inclusive jet production as well as other processes at the LHC, is studied. In addition, a study of the impact of scale choice on the theory description of the new 13 TeV tt¯ measurements is performed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Ionization Cross Sections of Hydrogen Molecule by Electron and Positron Impact.

We present ionization cross sections of hydrogen molecules by electron and positron impact for impact energies between 20 and 1000 eV. A three-body Classical Trajectory Monte Carlo approximation is applied to mimic the collision system. In this approach, the H2 molecule is modeled by a hydrogen-type atom with one active electron bound to a central core of effective charge with an effective binding energy. Although this model is crude for describing a hydrogen molecule, we found that the total cross sections for positron impact agree reasonably well with the experimental data. For the electron impact, our calculated cross sections are in good agreement with the experimental data in impact energies between 80 eV and 400 eV but are smaller at higher impact energies and larger at lower impact energies. Our calculated cross sections are compared with the scaled cross sections obtained experimentally for an atomic hydrogen target. We also present single differential cross sections as a function of the energy and angle of the ejected electron and scattered projectiles for a 250 eV impact. These are shown to agree well with available data. Impact parameter distributions are also compared for several impact energies.

Ionization of CH[formula omitted] under fast He-like Si-ion impact

We have studied the absolute double differential cross section (DDCS) of electrons ejected from the methane molecule (CH4) under the impact of highly charged fast projectile ions. The energy and angular distributions of electrons have been measured in interactions with 70 MeV Si12+ ions. These DDCS data together with the derived single differential cross sections and the total cross section (TCS) have been compared with predictions of the continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state model using different approaches for the molecular orbitals. It has been found that the theories overestimate the measured DDCS values at low ejection energies, which may indicate shortcomings of the model in the case of strong perturbation. At the same time, applying the model to a previous measurement using fast C ions having a lower perturbation strength, excellent agreements have been obtained with the experimental data. Considering the scaling properties, the available TCS data have been plotted with a scaled parameter, namely the perturbation strength, q/v (where q= charge state, v=velocity of the projectile). The KLL Auger e-emission as well as the KLL hyper-satellite peaks are analyzed for different emission angles. The double K-vacancy production shows a considerable enhancement i.e. 37% of the single production cross section which is consistent with some of the recent experiments on K-ionization using x-ray techniques.

Ionization of uracil molecule in collisions with 2.5-MeV/u Si12+ ions

The energy and angular distribution of electron emission from a RNA base molecule, uracil (C 4 H 4 N 2 O 2), are investigated in collisions with 2.5-MeV/u Si12+ ions under high perturbation strength. The absolute double differential cross sections (DDCS) are measured using electron spectroscopy for emission angles between 20° to 160° in the electron energy range 1-620 eV. The single differential cross sections (SDCS) are evaluated by integrating the DDCS over emission angles or energies. The measured cross sections (DDCS and SDCS) are compared with the state-of-the-art continuum distorted wave-eikonal initial state (CDW-EIS) theoretical model. The DDCS obtained by the CDW-EIS is found to provide better agreement with the measurements in the backward angles. With an increase in perturbation strength from 0.5 to 1.19 a.u., the DDCS is found to increase by 10 times in comparison to the earlier reported uracil data for 3.5-MeV/u bare C-ions [Phys. Rev. A 87, 032716 (2013)]. The significant enhancement in the TCS is found for the total cross section in case of Si12+ ions over that predicted by a scaling law as derived for lower charge state projectiles. The forward-backward angular asymmetry is found to increase monotonically with the velocity of emitted electrons and shows very good agreement with the model. For a comparative study, the DDCS is also measured for oxygen molecule using same ion impact, which is found to be about ten times lower than that for the uracil. The forward-backward angular asymmetry for oxygen is found to be almost the same as uracil.

Next-to-leading power resummed rapidity distributions near threshold for Drell-Yan and diphoton production

We consider Drell-Yan production and QCD-induced diphoton production and compute their rapidity distributions up to next-to-leading power (NLP) in the threshold variable. We give results for rapidity distributions of the Drell-Yan process up to NNLO accuracy and show that a factorised structure occurs for the leading logarithms (LL) at NLP, generalising the result at leading power. For diphoton production, we generalise methods based on kinematical shifts to find the NLO cross section up to NLP for rapidity distributions. From the results for these two processes, we derive resummed cross sections at NLP LL accuracy that are double differential in the threshold variable and the rapidity variable, which generalise results for single differential resummed cross sections.

First Double-Differential Measurement of Kinematic Imbalance in Neutrino Interactions with the MicroBooNE Detector.

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated double-differential quasielasticlike neutrino-argon cross sections, which have been made using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data are presented as a function of kinematic imbalance variables which are sensitive to nuclear ground-state distributions and hadronic reinteraction processes. We find that the measured cross sections in different phase-space regions are sensitive to different nuclear effects. Therefore, they enable the impact of specific nuclear effects on the neutrino-nucleus interaction to be isolated more completely than was possible using previous single-differential cross section measurements. Our results provide precision data to help test and improve neutrino-nucleus interaction models. They further support ongoing neutrino-oscillation studies by establishing phase-space regions where precise reaction modeling has already been achieved.

Total and differential ionization cross sections in collision between nitrogen atom and singly charged sodium ion

We present a theoretical study of the ionization of nitrogen atom by a singly charged sodium ion using the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. Although we suffer from a lack of cross section data of this collision system, the knowledge of the basic cross sections is essential in fusion science, because this reaction has potential applications in the diagnostic of magnetically confined fusion plasmas. In our investigations, the Na+–N collision system is reduced to a three-body problem. The interaction between the collision partners is described by the Garvey-type model potential. The results of our study provide insight into the dynamics of singly charged sodium–nitrogen interactions. The total cross sections are presented in the impact energy range between 10 keV and 10 MeV and compared them with the available experimental data. The single and double differential cross sections are presented at 30, 40, 50 and 60 keV energies related to the energies of the plasma diagnostic used in the nuclear fusion.

Electron impact ionization cross-sections for CH3 and SiH3 radical targets

Single differential cross sections as a function of secondary electron energy at fixed incident electron energies 100 and 200 eV for the targeted molecule CH3 and SiH3 have been evaluated by using a modified Jain-Khare semi-empirical approach. The integral or total electron-impact ionization cross-sections and the averaged energy loss from differential ionization cross-sections are calculated for incident electron energy from the ionization threshold to the 5 keV regimes. The temperature-dependent ionization rate coefficient is also calculated from total ionization cross-sections and Maxwell-Boltzmann electron energy distribution.The calculated values of total ionization cross sections corresponding to (e, 2e) processes for CH3 and SiH3 molecules are in good accord with available theoretical and experimental results.

Measurement of the double-differential muon-neutrino charged-current inclusive cross section in the NOvA near detector

We report cross-section measurements of the final-state muon kinematics for νμ charged-current interactions in the NOvA near detector using an accumulated 8.09×1020 protons on target in the NuMI beam. We present the results as a double-differential cross section in the observed outgoing muon energy and angle, as well as single-differential cross sections in the derived neutrino energy, Eν, and square of the four-momentum transfer, Q2. We compare the results to inclusive cross-section predictions from various neutrino event generators via χ2 calculations using a covariance matrix that accounts for bin-to-bin correlations of systematic uncertainties. Electron Emission Cross Section from Methane under 250 keV Proton Impact

We measure double differential cross sections (DDCS) of electrons emitted from CH4 molecules in collisions with 250 keV protons. The projectile ions are obtained from a 400 kV electron cyclotron resonance-based ion accelerator (ECRIA). We study the energy and angular distributions of the electron DDCS. The observed double and single differential and the total cross section are compared with the state-of-the-art continuum distorted wave eikonal initial state (CDW-EIS) model predictions. Two different approaches are used considering the different target descriptions: complete neglect of differential overlap (CNDO) and molecular orbital (MO) approximations. The MO model uses two different scaling parameters (d = 0.7 and 1.0). In the energy distribution of the DDCS, the carbon KLL Auger line is also observed at 240 eV. The single differential cross section (SDCS) and total cross section (TCS) are derived. Both the MO-based CDW-EIS models are in good agreement with the experimental results; however, the CNDO approach overestimates the data.

Quasielastic charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering with relativistic nuclear models

Charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering is studied in the quasielastic region with various relativistic nuclear models that include the relativistic Hartree, the nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}$, the quark-meson coupling, and the chiral quark-meson coupling models. Theoretical results at several kinematics are compared with experimental data measured from MiniBooNE, T2K, MicroBooNE, and SciBooNE. While the theoretical double-differential cross sections in terms of the kinetic energy and polar angle of outgoing muon describe the T2K data well, the single-differential cross sections in terms of energy loss and the total cross sections of incident neutrino energy do not properly describe MiniBooNE, MicroBooNE, and SciBooNE data. Additionally, differences from the relativistic nuclear models are examined in detail by comparing with the experimental data. In particular, the MiniBooNE data are not consistent with MicroBooNE and SciBooNE data, where the incident neutrino energies are below 1 GeV.

Measurement of the ν_{e}-Nucleus Charged-Current Double-Differential Cross Section at ⟨E_{ν}⟩=2.4 GeV Using NOvA.

The inclusive electron neutrino charged-current cross section is measured in the NOvA near detector using 8.02×10^{20} protons-on-target in the NuMI beam. The sample of GeV electron neutrino interactions is the largest analyzed to date and is limited by ≃17% systematic rather than the ≃7.4% statistical uncertainties. The double-differential cross section in final-state electron energy and angle is presented for the first time, together with the single-differential dependence on Q^{2} (squared four-momentum transfer) and energy, in the range 1 GeV≤E_{ν}<6 GeV. Detailed comparisons are made to the predictions of the GENIE, GiBUU, NEUT, and NuWro neutrino event generators. The data do not strongly favor a model over the others consistently across all three cross sections measured, though some models have especially good or poor agreement in the single differential cross section vs Q^{2}.

Electron emission from water vapor under the impact of 250-keV protons

Absolute double differential cross sections (DDCS) of low-energy electron emission from water molecule were measured upon collisions with 250-keV protons for emission angles between 30--150 degrees. The electrons having energies between 1 and 600 eV were detected by using hemispherical electrostatic analyzer. The single differential (SDCS) and total cross section (TCS) were calculated by integrating the DDCS and SDCS, respectively. The measured DDCS, SDCS, and TCS were compared with the classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) model, using a dynamical approach in which a time-dependent screening is considered. The continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial state (CDW-EIS) theoretical model has also been used to explain the energy and angular distribution data. The angular distribution of the DDCS are very well reproduced by the CTMC approach. The TCS calculated by the CTMC model matches better with the measured values as compared to the CDW-EIS estimation. The forward-backward angular asymmetry parameter was also estimated to test the validity of the state-of-the-art theoretical models used. Finally the recently developed CDW-EIS calculations considering a residual target dynamic charge (DC-CDW-EIS) is shown to provide an improved agreement with the experiments compared to the CDW-EIS. The present data and interpretation should provide inputs towards energy loss calculations required for the radiobiology involved in the hadron therapy of cancer.

Electron ionisation cross sections of CF3Cl and CF2Cl2 molecules

In this paper, we have investigated partial and total integral ionisation cross-sections of CF3Cl and CF2Cl2 molecules by a modified Jain-Khare semi-empirical approach during the direct and dissociative ionisation by electron impact. Present results show good agreement with the available data. Besides integral ionisation cross-sections, for the first time, we evaluated partial and total single differential cross sections for these molecules. No other results are available for single differential cross sections to compare the present calculated results.

The Binary-Encounter-Bethe Model for Computation of Singly Differential Cross Sections Due to Electron-Impact Ionization

In the present work, we assess the effectiveness of singly differential cross sections (SDCS) due to electron-impact ionization by invoking the binary-encounter-Bethe (BEB) model on various atomic and molecular targets. The computed results were compared with the experimental and theoretical data. A good agreement was observed between the present and the available results. This agreement improves as the incident energy of the projectile increases. The model can be applied to compute the SDCS for the ions produced due to the electron-impact dissociative ionization process and the average energy due to the secondary electrons. Both these quantities are of interest in plasma processing and radiation physics.

Inelastic scattering of electrons in water from first principles: cross sections and inelastic mean free path for use in Monte Carlo track-structure simulations of biological damage.

Modelling the inelastic scattering of electrons in water is fundamental, given their crucial role in biological damage. In Monte Carlo track-structure (MC-TS) codes used to assess biological damage, the energy loss function (ELF), from which cross sections are extracted, is derived from different semi-empirical optical models. Only recently have first ab initio results for the ELF and cross sections in water become available. For benchmarking purpose, in this work, we present ab initio linear-response time-dependent density functional theory calculations of the ELF of liquid water. We calculated the inelastic scattering cross sections, inelastic mean free paths, and electronic stopping power and compared our results with recent calculations and experimental data showing a good agreement. In addition, we provide an in-depth analysis of the contributions of different molecular orbitals, species and orbital angular momenta to the total ELF. Moreover, we present single-differential cross sections computed for each molecular orbital channel, which should prove useful for MC-TS simulations.

Light-nuclei gluons from dijet production in proton-oxygen collisions

The prospects of measuring a single-differential dijet cross section during the proposed short proton-oxygen data taking at LHC Run 3 are studied using next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions. With reasonable experimental cuts and luminosity estimates, such a measurement is found to be feasible, and a few inverse nanobarns of integrated luminosity is estimated to be enough to yield new constraints on parton distribution functions (PDFs) of light nuclei. In the absence of a dedicated proton-proton reference, a mixed-energy nuclear modification ratio is proposed for canceling free-proton PDF uncertainties to obtain a direct access to the nuclear modifications of the parton distributions in oxygen.

Evaluation of electron ionization cross-sections of CFCl3 molecule by using a semi-empirical approach

In the present paper, we have investigated partial and total electron ionization cross-sections for CFCl3 molecule from ionization threshold to 5 keV incident electron energy using a modified Jain-Khare semi-empirical approach. The present results of ionization cross-sections show good agreement with available data sets. We also have investigated the ionization rate coefficients for its partial and total ionization cross-sections. The first time we have investigated single differential cross-sections at constant incident energies and double differential cross-sections at different incident energies and different incident angles. No other data of differential cross-sections are available to date for comparison to our results.
