Designing a Phenalenyl-Based Dinuclear Ni(II) Complex: An Electrocatalyst with Two Single Ni Sites for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER).

A new dinuclear Ni(II) complex 1, [Ni2II(dtbh-PLY)2], is synthesized from 9-(2-(3,6-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylidene)hydrazineyl)-1H-phenalen-1-one, dtbh-PLYH2 ligand, and structurally characterized by various analytical tools including the single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) technique. In the solid state, both Ni(II) metal centers in complex 1 exist in a distorted square planar geometry and display the presence of rare Ni···H-C anagostic interactions to form a one-dimensional (1-D) linear motif in the supramolecular array. Complex 1 is further stabilized in the solid state by π-π-stacking interactions between the highly delocalized phenalenyl rings. The redox features of complex 1 have been analyzed by the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique in solution as well as in the solid state, revealing the crucial involvement of both the Ni(II) metal centers for undergoing quasi-reversible oxidation reactions on the application of an anodic sweep. A complex 1-modified glassy carbon electrode, GC-1, is employed as an electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH, giving an OER onset at 1.45 V, and very low OER overpotential, 300 mV vs the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) to reach 10 mA cm-2 current density. Furthermore, GC-1 displayed fast OER kinetics with a Tafel slope of 40 mV dec-1, a significantly lower Tafel slope value than those of previously reported molecular Ni(II) catalysts. In situ electrochemical experiments and postoperational UV-vis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies were performed to analyze the stability of the molecular nature of complex 1 and to gain reasonable insights into the true OER catalyst.

Evolution of structure and spectroscopic properties of a new 1,3-diacetylpyrene polymorph with temperature and pressure.

A new polymorph of 1,3-diacetylpyrene has been obtained from its melt and thoroughly characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, steady-state UV-Vis spectroscopy and periodic density functional theory calculations. Experimental studies covered the temperature range from 90 to 390 K and the pressure range from atmospheric to 4.08 GPa. Optimal sample placement in a diamond anvil cell according to our previously presented methodology ensured over 80% data coverage up to 0.8 Å for a monoclinic sample. Unrestrained Hirshfeld atom refinement of the high-pressure crystal structures was successful and anharmonic behavior of carbonyl oxygen atoms was observed. Unlike the previously characterized polymorph, the structure of 2°AP-β is based on infinite π-stacks of antiparallel 2°AP molecules. 2°AP-β displays piezochromism and piezofluorochromism which are directly related to the variation in interplanar distances within the π-stacking. The importance of weak intermolecular interactions is reflected in the substantial negative thermal expansion coefficient of -55.8 (57) MK-1 in the direction of C-H...O interactions.

Analysis of COF-300 synthesis: probing degradation processes and 3D electron diffraction structure.

Although COF-300 is often used as an example to study the synthesis and structure of (3D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs), knowledge of the underlying synthetic processes is still fragmented. Here, an optimized synthetic procedure based on a combination of linker protection and modulation was applied. Using this approach, the influence of time and temperature on the synthesis of COF-300 was studied. Synthesis times that were too short produced materials with limited crystallinity and porosity, lacking the typical pore flexibility associated with COF-300. On the other hand, synthesis times that weretoo long could be characterized by loss of crystallinity and pore order by degradation of the tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)methane (TAM) linker used. The presence of the degradation product was confirmed by visual inspection, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). As TAM is by far the most popular linker for the synthesis of 3D COFs, this degradation process might be one of the reasons why the development of 3D COFs is still lagging compared with 2D COFs. However, COF crystals obtained via an optimized procedure could be structurally probed using 3D electron diffraction (3DED). The 3DED analysis resulted in a full structure determination of COF-300 at atomic resolution with satisfying data parameters. Comparison of our 3DED-derived structural model with previously reported single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for this material, as well as parameters derived from the Cambridge Structural Database, demonstrates the high accuracy of the 3DED method for structure determination. This validation might accelerate the exploitation of 3DED as a structure determination technique for COFs and other porous materials.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Properties of a Titanium(IV)-Tetrathiafulvalene-Based Complex.

To deeply investigate the interaction between a tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) unit and a Ti(IV) center, a monomeric heteroleptic octahedral Ti(IV) complex containing a diimine ligand composed of a 1,10-phenanthroline core fused with a TTF fragment (ligand 2a) was prepared. The stable complex formulated as Ti(1)2(2a), where 1 is a 2,2'-biphenolato derivative, was efficiently synthesized by following a one-step approach. This complex and its model species [Ti(1)2(2b)] were fully characterized in solution, and their solid-state structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Density functional theory calculations allowed the assignment of the frontier orbitals involved in the electronic transitions characterized by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies revealed that the TTF unit within Ti(1)2(2a) can undergo two reversible one-electron oxidation processes; a reversible one-electron reduction of the Ti(IV) atom was highlighted. The photophysical measurements performed for this donor-acceptor molecular system indicated that an electron transfer process upon light excitation occurred within Ti(1)2(2a).

Bioactive Alkaloids from the Mangrove-Derived Fungus Nigrospora oryzae SYSU-MS0024

Chemical investigation of marine fungus Nigrospora oryzae SYSU-MS0024 cultured on solid-rice medium led to the isolation of three new alkaloids, including a pair of epimers, nigrosporines A (1) and B (2), and a pair of enantiomers, (+)-nigrosporine C (+)-3, and (−)-nigrosporine C (−)-3, together with eight known compounds (4–11). Their structures were elucidated based on extensive mass spectrometry (MS) and 1D/2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic analyses and compared with data in the literature. The absolute configurations of compounds 1–3 were determined by a combination of electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations, Mosher’s method, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction technique using Cu Kα radiation. In bioassays, compound 2 exhibited moderate inhibition on NO accumulation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on BV-2 cells in a dose-dependent manner at 20, 50, and 100 μmol/L and without cytotoxicity in a concentration of 100.0 μmol/L. Moreover, compound 2 also showed moderate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activities with IC50 values of 103.7 μmol/L. Compound 5 exhibited moderate antioxidant activity with EC50 values of 167.0 μmol/L.

Discovery of a New Polymorph of 5-Methoxy-1H-Indole-2-Carboxylic Acid: Characterization by X-Ray Diffraction, Infrared Spectroscopy, and DFT Calculations

This study presents a new 5-methoxy-1H-indole-2-carboxylic acid (MI2CA) polymorph investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory (ωB97X-D) calculations employing two basis sets (6-31++G(d,p) and aug-cc-pVTZ). The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c (a = 4.0305(2) Å, b = 13.0346(6) Å, c = 17.2042(9) Å, β = 91.871(5)°, Z = 4). In the crystalline structure, the formation of cyclic dimers via double hydrogen bonds O−H⋯O between MI2CA molecules was observed. Interactions between the NH groups of the indole rings and the adjacent methoxy groups, as well as C–H⋯O contacts, significantly influence the spatial arrangement of molecules. The results from DFT calculations, including dimeric and trimeric structures, agree well with the experimental structural and spectroscopic data. Analysis of the infrared spectra confirms the conclusions drawn from X-ray diffraction studies and reveals differences between the IR spectra of the newly obtained polymorph and that reported earlier in the literature. This comprehensive study sheds some light on the MI2CA polymorphism and is important for a potential pharmacological applications of this compound.

New isoxazolidine derivatives: Synthesis, spectroscopic analysis, X-ray, DFT calculation, biological activity studies

The isoxazolidine skeleton is an important component of biologically active natural products, and many compounds containing isoxazolidine ring exhibit excellent antibacterial and anticancer activities. Based on the variously biological activity of isoxazolidines, a new series of isoxazolidine derivatives were designed and synthesized. All the structure of target compounds was characterized by NMR and HRMS. Especially, compound 8a ((Z)-2-methyl-4-(phenoxymethylene)-3-phenylisoxazolidine) was prepared for single crystal X-ray diffraction and FT-IR. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also performed on compound 8a at the B3LYP/6–311 level. In addition, after evaluation with MTT method of compounds 8a-8k against A549 cells, it was found that some compounds performed well antitumor activities.

Synthesis and Structure of a Coordination Polymer of Ni(II) with 2-(4-Bromophenoxy)acetohydrazide

The coordination compound [NiCl2L(2-PrOH)]n (where L is 2-(4-bromophenoxy)acetohydrazide; 2-PrOH is isopropanol) was obtained for the first time. The complex was characterized by means of elemental analyses, molar conductance, thermogravimetric analysis, IR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. It was determined that the coordination compound exhibits a polymeric structure. The complexing agent is six-coordinated, and its distorted octahedron forms due to the bidentate coordination of 2-(4-bromophenoxy)acetohydrazide through the carbonyl oxygen atom and the amine nitrogen. The oxygen of the molecule of isopropanol, the chlorine atom, and two chlorine atoms serve as bridges between two metal atoms.

Structure–property relationships in dicyanopyrazinoquinoxalines and their hydrogen-bonding-capable dihydropyrazinoquinoxalinedione derivatives

Presented here is the design, synthesis, and study of a variety of novel hydrogen-bonding-capable π-conjugated N-heteroacenes, 1,4-dihydropyrazino[2,3-b]quinoxaline-2,3-diones (DPQDs). The DPQDs were accessed from the corresponding weakly hydrogen-bonding dicyanopyrazinoquinoxaline (DCPQ) suspensions with excess potassium hydroxide, resulting in moderate to good yields. Both families of compounds were analyzed by UV–vis and NMR spectroscopy, where the consequences of hydrogen bonding capability could be assessed through the structure–property studies. Conversion of the DCPQs into hydrogen-bonding capable DPQDs results in modulation of frontier MO energies, higher molar extinction coefficients, enhanced crystallinity, and on-average higher thermal stability (where in some cases the 5% weight loss temperature is increased by up to 100 °C). Single crystal X-ray diffraction data could be obtained for three DPQDs. One reveals pairwise hydrogen bonding in the solid state as well as a herringbone packing arrangement rendering it a promising candidate for additional studies in the context of organic optoelectronic devices.

Potential antiprostatic performance of novel lanthanide-complexes based on 5-nitropicolinic acid.

Two new lanthanide-complexes based on the 5-nitropicolinate ligand (5-npic)were obtained and fully characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that these compounds are isostructural to a Dy-complex, previously published by us, based on dinuclear monomers link together with an extended hydrogen bond network, providing a final chemical formula of [Ln2(5-npic)6(H2O)4]·(H2O)2, where Ln = Dy (1), Gd (2), and Tb (3). Preliminary photoluminescent studies exhibited a ligand-centered emission for all complexes. The potential antitumoral activity of these materials was assayed in a prostatic cancer cell line (PC-3; the 2nd most common male cancerous disease), showing a significant anticancer activity (50-60% at 500μg·mL-1). In turn, a high biocompatibility by both, the complexes and their precursors in human immunological HL-60 cells, was evidenced. In view of the strongest toxic effect in the tumoral cell line provided by the free 5-npic ligand (~ 40-50%), the overall anticancer complex performance seems to be triggered by the presence of this molecule.

New 19(10 → 9)abeo-euphane-type triterpenoids from Trichilia dregeana leaves and NO production inhibitory activities

Phytochemical investigation of the EtOAc soluble fraction from leaves of Trichilia dregeana Sond. (Meliaceae) afforded naturally rare four new pentacyclic triterpenoids (1–4), together with five known pentacyclic analogs (5–8, and 11) and two steroids (9 and 10). Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic techniques such as 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS data analyses. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by using the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The nitric oxide (NO) production inhibitory assay indicated that the EtOAc fraction as well as 4 and 7 inhibited the NO production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophage cells with the IC50 values of 83.53 μg/mL and 81.31 and 85.71 μM, respectively. Compounds 1–4 are rare 19(10 → 9)abeo-euphane-type triterpenoids bearing a 3,10-ether bridge. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first isolation of triterpenoids with the 3,10-ether bridge in their skeleton from the genus Trichilia, providing new insights into the chemodiversity of the terpenoids in T. dregeana.

Characteristic cembrane-type diterpenoids with nitric oxide inhibitory activity from the gum resin of Boswellia carterii Birdw

Five new characteristic cembrane-type diterpenoids (olibacartiols A–E, 1–5) were acquired from the gum resin of Boswellia carterii. The structures of these diterpenoids were characterized by detailed spectroscopic analysis, and compounds 1–3 were unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. The anti-inflammatory activities of the isolated compounds were evaluated using LPS-induced BV2 cell model and compounds 2–5 showed moderate NO inhibitory effects with IC50 values of 8.84 ± 1.02, 9.82 ± 1.95, 9.75 ± 2.24, and 7.39 ± 1.24 μM, respectively.

Silver(I) Octanuclear Complexes Containing N'-(4-Oxotiazolidin-2-Iliden)picolinohydrazonamide and Nitrate as Bridge Ligands. An Example of Solvatomorphism?

The versatile coordination chemistry of (2Z,N'E)-N'-(4-oxothiazolidin-2-ylidene)picolinohydrazonamide (HAmDHotaz) facilitated the synthesis of new complexes with different silver(I) salts. This paper describes the synthesis and characterization, through elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques (when solubility permits), of a series of compounds that illustrate the coordinative and structural diversity achievable with the HAmDHotaz ligand. Five silver clusters containing the [Ag8(AmDHotaz)4]4+ nucleus were structurally analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and were found to exhibit solvomorphism. The compositions of these are [Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)3(MeOH)(H2O)](NO3)·MeOH·7.5H2O (1), {[Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)3(H2O)2](NO3)·9.5(H2O)}n (2), {[Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)3(H2O)2](NO3)·11.5(H2O)}n (2a), {[Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)2(H2O)2](NO3)(OH)·6H2O}n (3), and {[Ag8(AmDHotaz)4(NO3)2(H2O)](NO3)(OH)·4.5H2O}n (3a). Argentophilic interactions are present in each of the octanuclear structures, where Ag···Ag distances range from 2.828(2) to 2.986(1) Å. These distances are influenced by crystal packing, determined by the counterion and solvent molecules in the structure. In the solvatomorphs, solvent molecules were observed to be disordered. Various hydrogen-bonding interactions, such as N-H···O-N, O-H···O, N-H···O═C, C-H···O-N, and π-π stacking interactions, contribute to the crystal packing. The influence of these weak interactions on the crystal packing was further analyzed using DFT calculations and Bader's theory of atoms-in-molecules, with a focus on argentophilic interactions and Ag···S interactions.

Design, Synthesis, and Biological Activity of Novel Triketone-Containing Phenoxy Nicotinyl Inhibitors of HPPD.

4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) is a crucial target enzyme in albino herbicides. The inhibition of HPPD activity interferes with the synthesis of carotenoids, blocking photosynthesis and resulting in bleaching and necrosis. To develop herbicides with excellent activity, a series of 3-hydroxy-2-(6-substituted phenoxynicotinoyl)-2-cyclohexen-1-one derivatives were designed via active substructure combination. The title compounds were characterized via infrared spectroscopy, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The structure of compound III-17 was confirmed via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Preliminary tests demonstrated that some compounds had good herbicidal activity. Crop safety tests revealed that compound III-29 was safer than the commercial herbicide mesotrione in wheat and peanuts. Moreover, the compound exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against Arabidopsis thaliana HPPD (AtHPPD), with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 0.19 μM, demonstrating superior activity compared with mesotrione (0.28 μM) in vitro. A three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship study revealed that the introduction of smaller groups to the 5-position of cyclohexanedione and negative charges to the 3-position of the benzene ring enhanced the herbicidal activity. A molecular structure comparison demonstrated that compound III-29 was beneficial to plant absorption and conduction. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations further verified the stability of the complex formed by compound III-29 and AtHPPD. Thus, this study may provide insights into the development of green and efficient herbicides.

Five Novel Polymorphs of Cardarine/GW501516 and Their Characterization by X-ray Diffraction, Computational Methods, Thermal Analysis and a Pharmaceutical Perspective

GW501516, also known by the name of cardarine, is a synthetic peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPR-δ) agonist agent developed for applications in the treatment of metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases. A broad polymorph screening in various solvents and mixtures was completed in order to explore its capabilities to grow polymorphs. The crystal structures of four polymorphs were elucidated using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, while one structure was solved via a powder X-ray diffraction method. The solid state features (nature of intermolecular interactions) were investigated by computational methods. The polymorphs were further investigated by thermal DSC analysis and X-ray diffraction on powders. From a pharmaceutical perspective, the stability and solubility of the polymorphs were analyzed as well.

Dauresorcinols A and B, two pairs of merosesquiterpenoid enantiomers with new carbon skeletons from Rhododendron dauricum

Five pairs of new merosesquiterpenoid enantiomers, named dauresorcinols A−E (1−5), were isolated from the leaves of Rhododendron dauricum. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic data analysis, quantum chemical calculations, Rh2(OCOCF3)4-induced ECD, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Dauresorcinols A (1) and B (2) possess two new merosesquiterpene skeletons bearing an unprecedented 2,6,7,10,14-pentamethyl-11-oxatetracyclo[8.8.0.02,7.012,17]octadecane and a caged 15-isohexyl-1,5,15-trimethyl-2,10-dioxatetracyclo[7.4.1.111,14.03,8]pentadecane motif, respectively. Plausible biosynthetic pathways of 1−5 are proposed involving key oxa-electrocyclization and Wagner−Meerwein rearrangement reactions. (+)/(−)-1 and 3−5 showed potent α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, 3 to 22 times stronger than acarbose, an antidiabetic drug targeting α-glucosidase. Docking results provide a basis to design and develop merosesquiterpenoids as potent α-glycosidase inhibitors.

Host-Host Interactions Enhanced the Structural Rigidity in a 6-Fold Interpenetrated Diamondoid Metal-Organic Framework Exhibiting C2H2/C2H4 Separation.

Multi-interpenetrated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited excellent performance in selective adsorption due to the variable post-interspersed flexibility, but the design and control remain challenging. Herein, two anthracene-based ligands, 4,4'-(anthracene-9,10-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2L1) and 9,10-di(pyridin-4-yl)anthracene (L2), are used to construct a new three-dimensional 6-fold interpenetrated MOF [Zn(L1)(L2)]n (NBU-X1), which exhibits multiple C-H···π interactions that enhance the structural rigidity, thereby entangling with a C2H2/C2H4 separation performance. In this material, the incorporation of abundant anthracene rings within the framework not only partitions and restricts the pore window size to a quasi-double pore but also stabilizes it through host-host interactions. The structural stability upon heating or guest displacement/removal has been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and in situ variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, in contrast to the extreme flexibility of most multi-interpenetrated MOFs. The performance of purifying C2H4 from C2H2/C2H4 mixtures has been proved by dynamic breakthrough tests.

A tetrahedral neptunium(V) complex.

Neptunium is an actinide element sourced from anthropogenic production, and, unlike naturally abundant uranium, its coordination chemistry is not well developed in all accessible oxidation states. High-valent neptunium generally requires stabilization from at least one metal-ligand multiple bond, and departing from this structural motif poses a considerable challenge. Here we report a tetrahedral molecular neptunium(V) complex ([Np5+(NPC)4][B(ArF5)4], 1-Np) (NPC = [NPtBu(pyrr)2]-; tBu = C(CH3)3; pyrr = pyrrolidinyl (N(C2H4)2); B(ArF5)4 = tetrakis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluourophenyl)borate). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, solution-state spectroscopy and density functional theory studies of 1-Np and the product of its proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reaction, 2-Np, demonstrate the unique bonding that stabilizes this reactive ion and establishes the thermochemical and kinetic parameters of PCET in a condensed-phase transuranic complex. The isolation of this four-coordinate, neptunium(V) complex reveals a fundamental reaction pathway in transuranic chemistry.

Preparation of single crystals of palmatine-sulfophenyl acids pharmaceutical salts by substituting Cl− in palmatine chloride to improve hygroscopic stability and antibacterial activity of palmatine and to preserve its solubility

To enhance the hygroscopic stability of palmatine chloride (PMTCl) while maintaining its solubility, several unexplored pharmaceutical salts of palmatine (PMT) were synthesised using benzenesulfonic acid (PMT-BSA), p-toluenesulfonic acid (PMT-PTSA), and aminobenzenesulfonic acid (PMT-SUL). These novel salts were thoroughly characterized using techniques such as single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and Hirshfeld surface analysis to determine their structural properties. Surprisingly, it was discovered that these salts exhibited improved antibacterial activity in addition to their enhanced hygroscopic stability. As anticipated, all three pharmaceutical salts demonstrated improved hygroscopic stability. This improvement might be attributed, to some extent, to the introduction of safe, stable, and less electronegative anions (BSA, PTSA, and SUL) to replace the more electronegative chloride (Cl−) in PMTCl. The replacement of Cl− hindered the binding of the pharmaceutical with external water molecules, thus increasing its resistance to moisture. Moreover, the interaction between PMT and the anions from the benzenesulfonic acid group via hydrogen bonding might have played a role in the improved hygroscopic stability. The crystal structure formed by the PMT molecules exhibited long-range order, while the benzenesulfonic acid anions cleverly avoided potential binding sites for water molecules. Additionally, the antibacterial activities of all three pharmaceutical salts were enhanced. This improvement can be attributed to the alteration of electron cloud density (ρe) in the isoquinoline group of PMT upon the introduction of benzenesulfonate anions to form the pharmaceutical salts. This hypothesis was supported by analyzing the molecular electrostatic potential, electron cloud density, and Hirshfeld surface. The successful outcome of this study suggests that modifying the ρe of the isoquinoline group in protoberberines through the introduction of benzenesulfonic acid anions to form pharmaceutical salts can potentially alter their physicochemical properties and biological activities. This finding paves the way for future research on improving the physicochemical properties of protoberberines-based pharmaceuticals.

Toward New Horizons in Verdazyl-Nitroxide High-Spin Systems: Thermally Robust Tetraradical with Quintet Ground State.

High-spin organic tetraradicals with significant intramolecular exchange interactions have high potential for advanced technological applications and fundamental research, but examples reported to date exhibit limited stability and processability. In this work, we designed the first tetraradical based on an oxoverdazyl core and nitronyl nitroxide radicals and successfully synthesized it using a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of an oxoverdazyl radical bearing three iodo-phenylene moieties with a gold(I) nitronyl nitroxide-2-ide complex in the presence of a recently developed efficient catalytic system. The molecular and crystal structures of the tetraradical were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The tetraradical possesses good thermal stability with decomposition onset at ∼125 °C in an inert atmosphere; in a toluene solution upon prolonged heating at 90 °C in air, no decomposition was observed. The resulting unique verdazyl-nitroxide conjugate was thoroughly studied using a range of experimental and theoretical techniques, such as SQUID magnetometry of polycrystalline powders, EPR spectroscopy in various matrices, cyclic voltammetry, and high-level quantum chemical calculations. All collected data confirm the high thermal stability of the resulting tetraradical and quintet multiplicity of its ground state, which makes the synthesis of this important paramagnet a new milestone in the field of creating high-spin systems.
