The large bright quasar survey. 6: Quasar catalog and survey parameters

Abstract Positions, redshifts, and magnitudes for the 1055 quasars in the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS) are presented in a single catalog. Celestial positions have been rederived using the PPM catalog to provide an improved reference frame. J2000.0 coordinates are given together with improved B1950.0 positions. Redshifts calculated via cross correlation with a high signal-to-noise ratio composite quasar spectrum are included and the small number of typographic and redshift misidentifications in the discovery papers are corrected. Spectra of the 12 quasars added to the sample since the publication of the discovery papers are included. Descriptions of the plate material, magnitude calibration, quasar candidate selection procedures, and the identification spectroscopy are given. Calculation of the effective area of the survey for the 1055 quasars comprising the well-defined LBQS sample is specified in detail. Number-redshift and number-magnitude relations for the quasars are derived and the strengths and limitations of the LBQS sample summarized. Comparison with existing surveys is made and a qualitative assessment of the effectiveness of the LBQS undertaken. Positions, magnitudes, and optical spectra of the eight objects (<1%) in the survey that remain unidentified are also presented. Strategies for a european catalog

The economic and legal integration of Europe and the convergence of needs for business-to-business markets as well as for consumer goods suggest that Europe is a common market. Furthermore, for economic reasons, technological factors promote a single catalog for European markets. Conditions are met for a pan-European catalog. However, analysis of six companies’ strategies leads to the conclusion that it is not always the case and that other factors, such as the activities of producers versus distributors or channel confrontation, can explain the choices. Key words in the analysis include catalog, Europe, globalization, and standardization.

The No-Main-Entry Principle and the Automated Catalog

The No-Main-Entry Principle and the accompanying Description-Idependent System of cataloging, described in a 1989 article by Takawashi, Shihota and Oshiro, is analyzed in relation to the online catalog. The development of the main entry concept, from the time of the single entry catalog to the advent of the automated catalog is described. The relation between the available technologies of the time and the main entry concept is explored. Although the necessity for a main entry, or full cataloging record, in a single entry catalog is acknowledged, it is suggested that in an automated catalog it is no longer relevant. A recommendation that libraries with online catalogs explore the possibilities of cataloging according to the no-main-entry principle is accompanied by a statement of the advantage of such a system and suggestions for implementing it.

The SRS Catalog of 20,488 Star Positions Culmination of an International Cooperative Effort

A major international effort to observe and compile the results of observations from many transit circle programs into a single catalog of positions referred to the FK4 system came to a conclusion with the completion and distribution of the Southern Reference Star (SRS) catalog of 20,488 stars. Previous discussions focussed on the adjustments to the observational material to refer it to the FK4 system and on the random errors as estimated from residual differences. In the present discussion, we give the results of internal comparisons which have been made between the individual contributing catalogs and the final combined SRS catalog. Also, results of a comparison between the SRS catalog and the AGK3R catalog are given where they overlap in the declination zone from +5 to −5 degrees. The possibility of magnitude equation and color error in the SRS catalog is discussed.The reduction procedure used to transform the version of the SRS catalog based on the FK4/B1950.0 system to the version based on the FK5/J2000.0 system is given.
