The effect of reflexology on pain perception aspects in nurses with chronic low back pain in Isfahan.

Background:The most important part in experiencing and recognizing the threshold of pain is the perception of pain. Reflexology is a kind of complementary therapy which is rooted in the beliefs of the community. This study was aimed to determine the effect of reflexology on pain perception aspects in patients with chronic low back pain.Materials and Methods:This single-blind clinical trial study was performed on 50 nurses with chronic low back pain, who were selected by convenient sampling and then randomly divided into the case and the control groups. Reflexology was conducted for 2 weeks in both groups as three 40-min sessions per week. Perception aspects of pain were measured using the McGill pain perceptual dimension scale score. Data analysis was performed using SPSS.Results:The overall mean scores of perceptual aspects of pain after the intervention in the case and the control groups were 20 ± 5.97 and 29.60 ± 7.38, respectively, and independent t-test showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.001). Comparing the results in the cognitive aspects of pain separately showed a significant difference between the two groups in the aspects of sensory, pain assessment, and diversity before and after the intervention (P < 0.001), but the difference in the emotional aspect was not significant.Conclusions:Reflexology, which can be done by nurses, has the ability to reduce the intensity score and cognitive aspects of pain. Therefore, it is proposed to be included in patients’ surveillance.

Effect of vimala massage on physiological jaundice in infants: a randomized controlled trial.

Considering the prevalence of Jaundice in newborn infants and the risk of developing acute Bilirubin encephalopathy, in early weeks after birth. the importance of Infancy, as well as positive effects of giving massage on physical and behavioral growth and evolution of infants, the current study has been aimed to investigate the effects of Vimala massage on neonatal physiological Jaundice. This is a single blind clinical trial study, 43 healthy term infants, with 1(st) day Bilirubin levels of less than 5mg/dl, carried out in Tabriz Al-Zahra hospital. Newborns were selected through convenience sampling and then randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Control group received routine care, while newborns of intervention group received four days of Vimala massage starting from the first day of their birth. Main variables of study include transcutaneous Bilirubin and frequency of defecation. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS Ver.13 through Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests. There were no statistical significant differences between two groups for skin bilirubin, however the number of defecations in the intervention group exceeded than of control group, and was statistically significant. The RESULTS show that Vimala massage within four days has no effect on increasing process of bilirubin, yet can affect the incidence rate of physiological Jaundice and care of infants by increasing defecation frequency.

The Effects of Propofol and Isoflurane on Blood Glucose during Abdominal Hysterectomy in Diabetic Patients.

BackgroundAcute hyperglycemia in the perioperative period is associated with significantly increased complications. In few human studies the effects of propofol and inhalational anesthetic on the glucose metabolism were compared. In this study we evaluated the effect of propofol and isoflurane on blood glucose during abdominal hysterectomy in diabetic patients.MethodsAfter approval by the Ethical Committee and written informed consent, thirty 35 to 65 years old diabetic women underwent for elective abdominal hysterectomy under general anesthesia were studied in this randomized single blind clinical trial study. The plasma glucose was maintained at 100 to 180 mg/dL during the operation. Anesthesia protocol was similar in two groups except maintenance of anesthesia that was with infusion of propofol in the propofol group and with isoflurane in the isoflurane group. Blood glucose level and the rate of insulin intake during surgery compared between two groups.ResultsMean blood glucose before induction of anesthesia did not have significant difference between two groups, but 60 and 90 minutes after starting the operation blood glucose in the propofol group was significantly lower than isoflurane group. Also with using Repeated Measure test, two groups was significantly different according to blood glucose (P=0.045). Mean of administration of insulin during the surgery did not have significant difference between two groups by using repeated measure test and P=0.271. Also mean of bispectral index in different times during the surgery between two groups didn't have significant difference (P=0.35 repeated measure test).ConclusionBlood glucose increased during maintenance of anesthesia with isoflurane compared to propofol during the surgery.

A Randomized Clinical Trial of the Efficacy of KID21 Point (Youmen) Acupressure on Nausea and Vomiting of Pregnancy

BackgroundNausea and vomiting in pregnancy is a common complaint of nearly 50-80% of pregnant women. The problem begins around the 4th weeks of pregnancy and often stays up to the 12th weeks and may continue to the 16th week in a few patients.ObjectivesThe aim of our study is to determine the effect of acupressure (on KID21 point) on nausea and vomiting of pregnancy.Materials and MethodsThis single blind clinical trial study was performed on 80 women with nausea and vomiting in the first trimester of pregnancy. Women were randomly divided to two groups; study group with the acupressure on KID21 point and the placebo group with pressure on sham acupressure for 20 minutes per day in four consecutive days. The intensity of nausea was assessed by visual Analogue scale (VAS) and vomiting frequency was evaluated by counting during these four days. Then the results compared with each other.ResultsThe intensity of nausea and vomiting between two groups on the fourth day was shown differences (P<0.001).ConclusionsAcupressure on KID21 point is more effective than sham acupressure in reduction of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.

P-1348 - The effects of herbal medicin and homeopathic remedy on insomnia

Introduction Insomnia is one of the most common sleep complications which are defined as a problem in the beginning of sleep or its permanence. Aims The aim of this study was the effects of herbal medicine (Valeriana officinalis) and homeopathic remedy (Coffea cruda) on insomnia. Methods This is a single blind clinical trial study, conducted on 90 students who suffered on insomnia. They were chosen by volunteer sampling and randomly allocated in two groups. One group received homeopathic remedy Coffea cruda drop and placebo capsule and other ones used allopathic medicine Valeriana officinalis capsule and placebo drop. Both groups used one capsule one hour before sleep every night and one drop every 8 hours for one month. The ethical committee of the university approved the study. Data were collected through 3 questionnaires: Demographic, Petersburg sleep quality index and Standard Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Content validity and test-retest methods were used for validity and reliability. Data analysis using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results Before usage, the quality and severity average of Sleep in Valeriana officinalis group was mean =11.78and15/14 before and 7.56and8/6 after a period of 1 months. The quality and severity average of Sleep in Coffea curada group was mean =11/51 and14/53 before usage and 5.51and 6/05 after a period of 1 months. We have obtained a significant difference between 2 groups 1 month after the start of consumption (P Conclusion The results of this study suggested, Cafea cruda, is more and low side effect methods than herbal medicine.

Effects of ginger capsules on pregnancy, nausea, and vomiting.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of ginger in nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. This was a single blind clinical trial study. The study was conducted in a selected prenatal care clinic of Isfahan City hospitals. The subjects included 67 pregnant women who complained of nausea and vomiting from Isfahan city hospitals participated in the study. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups, an experimental group and a control group. The groups were matched according to the age, gestational age, parity, occupational status, and educational level of the participants. The experimental group received ginger 250 mg capsules for 4 days, and the control group received placebo with the same prescription form. Effects of treatment of nausea were evaluated twice daily for 4 days by a before-and-after treatment questionnaire. The mean ages of the experimental and control groups were 24.1 +/- 4.8 and 23.3 +/- 5 years, respectively. The mean gestational age was 13 +/- 3 weeks, and the mean parity was 1.6 +/- 0.8. The ginger users demonstrated a higher rate of improvement than the placebo users did (85% versus 56%; p < 0.01). The decrease in vomiting times among ginger users was also significantly greater than among the women who received the placebo (50% versus 9%; p < 0.05). A daily total of 1000 mg of ginger in a capsule preparation can be suggested by care providers as a means of decreasing pregnancy nausea and vomiting in women who tend to herbal medicines. Ginger is an effective herbal remedy for decreasing nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
