Kalviwadithyrites, a new fungal fruiting body from Sindhudurg Formation (Miocene) of Maharashtra, India

A rich palynoflora consisting of fungal remains, pteridophyte spores and angiosperm pollen has been recovered from Sindhudurg Formation exposed at Kalvlwadi, Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra. In this assemblage, a fungal fruiting body Kalviwadithyrites is proposed as new and it could not be accommodated in any of the known fossil fungal genera.

Amberiwadiacarpon devgarhensis gen. et sp. nov. from Amberiwadi, Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra, India

A fossil carbonised angiospermous fruit, Amberiwadiacarpon devgarhensis gen. et sp. nov. has been recovered for the first time from the Miocene sediments of Amberiwadi Village (Devgarh Taluk), Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra, India. Based on the morphological characters, the affinities of present fossil fruit have been suggested with the extant pantropical family Rubiaceae and more particularly with the taxa Randia Houst. ex Linn. and Psychotria Linn. of this family.

Motivation is an important management tool, especially in those organisations that are heavily dependent on the skills and ability of men rather than on machines. The police department is one such organisation which still today, despite modernisation, is human oriented. Police managers need to understand methods for motivating officers and men working under them. Maslow's Theory of Hierarchy of Needs provides a simple yet effective way of motivating employees. A study conducted in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra State (India) provides an insight into the motivating needs of police officers and men in the district. The study also points towards the steps that senior police managers need to take in order to have a highly motivated police force.

Canariocarpon ratnagiriensis gen. et sp. nov. from Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra, India

Fossil carbonised angiospermous fruil Canariocarpon ratnagiriensis gen. et sp. nov. has been described from the Miocene sediments of Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra, India. The detailed morphological characters indicate its affinities with extant Canarium of Burseraceae. Occurrence of Canarium type fruits in these sediments signifies warm-humid climate prevailing during the time of deposition.

Palynological investigation of the Ratnagiri beds of Sindhu Durg District, Maharashtra

A palynological assemblage consisting of 60 genera and 95 species has been recovered from the Ratnagiri beds of Sindhu Durg District, Maharashtra. Quantitatively, pteridopytic spores and fungal remains are dominant, sharing 44 and 40 percent of the total assemblage respectively. These are followed by angiospermous pollen (16%). On the basis of comparative morphology, the palynofossils have been assigned affinities to extant genera or families. The present day distribution of such taxa suggests a tropical-subtropical climate (warm-humid) with plenty of rainfall. The environment of deposition has been interpreted as near-shore with sufficient fresh water supply.

Geology of the area around Katta, sindhudurg district, Maharashtra. Based on aerospace data

Geological studies of the area around Katta, in the southern part of the Ratnagiri District of Maharashtra, were carried out with the help of visual remote sensing techniques using LANDSAT imageries on 1:250,000 scale and aerial photographs on 1:60,000 scale.
