Multivariate optimization of cloud point extraction for the simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of cobalt and nickel in water samples

In this paper a new and simple cloud point extraction (CPE) method has been developed for the preconcentration and simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of binary mixtures of cobalt and nickel in water samples, without prior separation steps. This method is based on the mean centering of ratio spectra. 1-nitroso-2-naphthol was used as the chelating agent and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), was used as extracting agent at room temperature. Central composite design (CCD) based response surface method (RSM) was applied for the optimization of main experimental parameters such as pH of solutions, concentration of the chelating agent, surfactant and salt. Under the optimum conditions the analytical characteristics of the method such as limit of detection, linear range, relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) and relative standard error (R.S.E.) were calculated. Calibration graphs were linear in the range of 5–300 and 10–320 ng mL−1 with detection limits of 0.73 and 0.85 ng mL−1 for Co(II) and Ni(II), respectively. The limit of quantification was 2.43 and 2.83 ng mL−1 for Co(II) and Ni(II), respectively. The interference effect of some anions and cations was also tested. The method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of Co(II) and Ni(II) in water samples.

Simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of cobalt, copper and nickel using 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol by chemometrics methods

The simultaneous determination of cobalt, copper and nickel using 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol (first figure of this article) by spectrophotometric method is a difficult problem in analytical chemistry, due to spectral interferences. By multivariate calibration methods, such as partial least squares (PLS) regression, it is possible to obtain a model adjusted to the concentration values of the mixtures used in the calibration range. Orthogonal signal correction (OSC) is a preprocessing technique used for removing the information unrelated to the target variables based on constrained principal component analysis. OSC is a suitable preprocessing method for PLS calibration of mixtures without loss of prediction capacity using spectrophotometric method. In this study, the calibration model is based on absorption spectra in the 550–750-nm range for 21 different mixtures of cobalt, copper and nickel. Calibration matrices were formed from samples containing 0.05–1.05, 0.05–1.30 and 0.05–0.80 μg mL −1 for cobalt, copper and nickel, respectively. The root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) for cobalt, copper and nickel with OSC and without OSC were 0.007, 0.008, 0.011 and 0.031, 0.037, 0.032 μg mL −1, respectively. This procedure allows the simultaneous determination of cobalt, copper and nickel in synthetic and real samples and good reliability of the determination was proved.

Simultaneous Spectrophotometric Determination of Cobalt and Nickel by Partial Least Square Regression in Micellar Media

Diphenycarbazone has been used for the simultaneous determination of cobalt and nickel by partial least square regression method. DPC complexes of cobalt and nickel at pH 7-10 are of pink color, which are soluble in TX-100 micellar media. A partial least square multivariate calibration method for the analysis of binary mixtures of cobalt and nickel was developed. The total relative standard error for applying the PLS method was calculated. The accuracy and reproducibility of the determination method for various known amounts of Co(II) and Ni(II) in their binary mixtures were tested. The effects of diverse ions on the determination of cobalt and nickel to investigate the selectivity of the method were also studied. The proposed method was applied to the synthetic binary mixtures, alloys and pharmaceutical samples.

Simultaneous determination of cobalt, nickel and iron by multi-wavelength spectrophotometry

A method for the simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of cobalt, nickel and iron based on the formation of their complexes with 1,5-bis(di-2-pyridylmethylene) thiocarbonohydrazide is proposed. The absorption curves of these complexes overlap severely in the scanning range 390–510 nm. The analyte concentrations are calculated by a least squares fit of the pure spectra to the mixture spectra, which therefore makes the simultaneous determination of these metallic ions possible without tedious pretreatment. The detection limits afforded by the proposed method range from 0.05 μg/ml for Fe and Ni to 0.1 μg/ml for Co. Root-mean-squared errors of prediction of 0.085 μg/ml for Co, 0.048 μg/ml for Ni and 0.1172 μg/ml for Fe were obtained using the wavelength range 400–510 nm and 0.147 μg/ml for Co, 0.107 μg/ml for Ni and 0.127 μg/ml for Fe using the wavelength range 420–434 nm. The effect of interferences is studied and the proposed method is applied to analysis for the above elements in synthetic samples and real samples, such as biological materials and alloys.

Simultaneous Spectrophotometric Determination of Cobalt, Copper and Nickel by the Full Spectrum Technique in the Fourier Domain

Abstract Two methods, the multivariate linear regression and full spectrum technique in the fourier domain, were studied for simultaneous determination of cobalt(I), copper(I) and nickel(I) in mixture. Two programs, SPGRMLR and SPGRFSQ, were designed to perform these calculations. In the full spectrum method, seven error functions were calculated for estimating the number of factors and data reduction was fulfilled by factor analysis. Experimental results showed the full spectrum method to be more powerful than multivariate linear regression. Both methods were demonstrated to be successful in the present case.

2,2′-Dipyridylketone-2-pyridylhydrazone (DPPH) was used for the simultaneous determination of cobalt (0.6–6 ppm) and iron (1–12 ppm). Interferences from nickel, copper, zinc, and manganese were avoided by controlling the pH at 3.5. Isoquinoline-3-aldehyde-2-pyridylhydrazone (IAPH) was used for the simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of cobalt, nickel, and iron. Interferences from copper, zinc, and manganese were avoided by use of EDTA and ammonia.

Analysis of fluoroborate alloy plating solutions to determine iron, cobalt and nickel

A rapid method for the determination of iron, cobalt and nickel in fluoroborate solutions has been devised and tested. It involves an initial dichromate titration to determine both iron(II) and iron(III) followed by the simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of cobalt and nickel at wavelengths 394 and 512 nm after reduction of all the iron to the iron(II) state.The recommended procedure, which can be completed in less than 1 hour, has been successfully applied to typical plating solutions.

Simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of cobalt, nickel and copper with 2,3-quinoxaline- dithiol

In aqueous ethanol cobalt(II), nickel(II) and copper(I) react instantaneously with 2,3-quinoxalinedithiol at pH 2 to form strongly coloured complexes exhibiting absorption maxima at 510, 606 and 665, and 625 nm, respectively. At pH 6 the reaction of copper can be virtually eliminated, while the cobalt and nickel reactions show only small decreases in sensitivity. This behaviour has been made the basis of a rapid method for the simultaneous determination of these three elements. The absorbances of the complexes have been found to be additive for all combinations of these elements in which the individual concentrations have been varied from approximately 0.1 to 1 ppm. A least-squares estimate of the concentration of any of the elements may be readily obtained by using a simple linear equation based on the absorbance readings and a set of constants derived from the spectrophotometric data. The analyses of seven synthetic solutions and four NBS Standard Reference Materials yielded a maximum error of 6.0% and an average error of 1.6%.
