A Single‐Step Cleaning Process for Simultaneous Removal of Surface Impurities and Passivation of Sub‐Surface Defects in Perovskite Solar Cells

AbstractPerovskite solar cells (PSCs) suffer from the presence of non‐active and metastable species on the surface of solution‐processed perovskite films, and their adverse effects on charge extraction and long‐term stability cannot be fully addressed by conventional surface passivation strategies. In this study, a novel concept is proposed to achieve both precise removal of surface impurities and effective passivation of sub‐surface defects in a single step, utilizing a functional polymer‐based cleaning strategy. The moderate intermolecular force provided by the functional polymer and their inherent robust interchain interactions enable effective surface cleaning without disturbing the active crystal lattice. Following surface cleaning, the electron‐donating groups (C═O) in the polymer passivate the uncoordinated Pb2+ defects at the sub‐surface level. This synergistic effect of surface cleaning and sub‐surface defect passivation leads to a drastic reduction in interfacial non‐radiative recombination, elimination of ion migration pathways, and prevention of triggers for photodegradation. As a result, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) significantly improved from 22.84% to 25.51%, accompanied by a remarkable enhancement in operational stability. Moreover, the operability and effectiveness of this approach make it highly suitable for scaling up perovskite solar modules in the future.

Simultaneous removal of As(V) and sulfamethazine from water in FeS2-H2O2 system

Sulfamethazine (SMT) and organic arsenic are usually used as feed additives in animal husbandry and aquaculture, which will produce severe compound pollution after metabolism and discharge. In this work, the FeS2-H2O2 system was used to simultaneously remove As(V) and SMT. Under 0.8 g/L of FeS2, 40 mM of H2O2, the simultaneous removal efficiency of SMT and As(V) was up to 97 %. The initial concentration of As(V) was unfavourable for SMT degradation, while the effect of initial concentration of SMT on As(V) removal could be ignored. Meanwhile, increasing FeS2 and H2O2 dosages enhanced removal efficiency of SMT and As(V). However, excessive FeS2 was detrimental to the removal of As, and the ·OH, ·O2−, and 1O2 were generated to degrade SMT. As was adsorbed on the surface of positively charged FeS2 firstly and then reacted with Fe(III) on the surface of FeS2 or released by Fenton reaction to form FeAsO4. No As(III) was detected during the simultaneous removal process in the FeS2-H2O2 system. This study revealed that SMT and As(V) could be removed simultaneously in the FeS2-H2O2 system, which produced new insight into animal husbandry and aquaculture wastewater treatments.

Porous Fe-modified CuCeZr catalysts for simultaneous removal of NO and toluene at low-medium temperatures: Promoted activity and SO2 effect on the reaction process

Developing non-vanadium-based SCR catalysts with high performances for simultaneous removal of NO and toluene at low-medium temperatures remains a challenge in addressing SO2 poisoning. Herein, porous Fe-modified CuCeZr catalysts prepared via KIT-6 hard-templating method was conducted to investigate the simultaneous removal of NO and toluene at low-medium temperatures. A suite of experiments and characterizations was systematically used to probe into the effect of SO2 on the reaction process. The results indicated that porous Fe-modified CuCeZr displayed excellent performance for simultaneous removal of NO and toluene. The introduction of Fe into CuCeZr enhances both acid sites and redox properties via the redox cycle between Cu2++Ce3+↔Cu++Ce4+ and Fe3++Ce3+↔Fe2++Ce4+ redox cycle. Importantly, Fe incorporation leads to the formation of lattice defects and oxygen vacancies, generating abundant active sites that mitigate the detrimental effects of SO2 poisoning, and promote the efficient removal of NO and toluene simultaneously. Besides, a mechanism influence of SO2 on the reaction process for simultaneous removal of NO and toluene at low-medium temperatures was proposed. This mechanism has the potential to provide an effective solution for developing non-vanadium-based SCR catalysts with sulfur resistance.

Simultaneous removal process of hydrogen sulfide and siloxanes and field application of iron hydroxide desulfurization agent for green hydrogen production from biogas

Biogas, one of renewable energies, is a key element necessary for a carbon-neutral policy and to build a hydrogen economy. In order to utilize biogas, impurities of biogas such as moisture, hydrogen sulfide(H2S), siloxanes, and VOCs should be removed. In particular, since H2S causes corrosiveness of equipment by sulfur oxides, and is harmful to the human body if leaked, it is a major target material to be removed. The minimum concentration of H2S obtainable from the wet method is several ppm. It is known, however that the iron hydroxide-based adsorbent in the dry method can obtain ultimately low concentration of H2S down to 0.1 ppm or less. The DeHyS was manufactured through a series of processes such as mixing iron cloride solution or iron sulfate solution, NaOH solution, and inorganic binder. During the adsorption process, H2S was removed in the form of iron sulfide through a chemical reaction, and siloxanes are known to be removed through physical adsorption. It was also applied to various biogas plant sites such as landfill gas, sewage sludge, livestock manure, and food waste. At this time, the H2S removal efficiency was known to be 99.9% or more, while simultaneous removal of 90% or more of the total siloxanes was possible. Moreover, the biogas produced at the Chungju Food Bioenergy Center was pretreated using the DeHyS and supplied to the nearby Chungju Bio Green Hydrogen Charging Station to produce hydrogen through steam methane reforming(SMR), producing 500 kg of hydrogen from 8,000 m3 of biogas per day.

Anoxic granular activated sludge process for simultaneous removal of hazardous perchlorate and nitrate

An airtight, anoxic bubble-column sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was developed for the rapid cultivation of perchlorate (ClO4-) and nitrate (NO3-) reducing granular sludge (GS) in this study. Feast/famine conditions and shear force selection pressures in tandem with a short settling time (2-min) as a hydraulic section pressure resulted in the accelerated formation of anoxic granular activated sludge (AxGS). ClO4- and NO3- were efficiently (>99.9%) reduced over long-term (>500-d) steady-state operation. Specific NO3- reduction, ClO4- reduction, chloride production, and non-purgeable dissolved organic carbon (DOC) oxidation rates of 5.77 ± 0.54 mg NO3--N/g VSS·h, 8.13 ± 0.74 mg ClO4-/g VSS·h, 2.40 ± 0.40 mg Cl-/g VSS·h, and 16.0 ± 0.06 mg DOC/g VSS·h were recorded within the reactor under steady-state conditions, respectively. The AxGS biomass cultivated in this study exhibited faster specific ClO4- reduction, NO3- reduction, and DOC oxidation rates than flocculated biomass cultivated under similar conditions and AxGS biomass operated in an up-flow anaerobic sludge blank (UASB) bioreactor receiving the same influent loading. EPS peptide identification revealed a suite of extracellular catabolic enzymes. Dechloromonas species were present in high abundance throughout the entirety of this study. This is one of the initial studies on anoxic granulation to simultaneously treat hazardous chemicals and adds to the science of the granular activated sludge process.

Simultaneous removal of SO2, NO and Hg0 using porous carbon/heat-coactivated persulfate system

A novel simultaneous removal technique of SO2, NO, and Hg0 using porous carbon/heat-coactivated persulfate (PS) system was proposed. A series of experiments and theoretical analysis were conducted to explore simultaneous removal process of Hg0, SO2, and NO. Study demonstrates that the developed porous carbon/heat-coactivated PS system gains larger free radical yield and higher pollutants simultaneous removal efficiency than other comparison systems, which are associated with the synergism between porous carbon and heat. High temperature plays a vital role in this co-activation system. Both SO4−· and ·OH play an important role in NO and Hg0 removal, but ·OH is more important for NO removal while SO4−· is more important for Hg0 removal. Both NO and Hg0 removal processes meet pseudo-first-order rapid reaction kinetics, and their removal processes are controlled by mass transfer. Removal efficiencies of NO and Hg0 are increased first and then are decreased with increasing PS concentration, temperature and porous carbon concentration. Increasing pH and concentrations of SO2, NO and Hg0 reduce the NO and Hg0 removal efficiencies. The highest simultaneous removal efficiency of Hg0, SO2, and NO is up to 98.4% for Hg0, 100% for SO2, and 89.3% for NO under an optimized test condition.

Synthesis of multi-layered nanoswabs for simultaneous and expeditious removal of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, dyes, and antibiotics from wastewater

Multi-layered glyoxylic-functionalized triptycene nanoswabs (G-TCNS) were synthesized using a novel one-step intercalation cross-linked polymerization process for simultaneous removal of different types of water contaminants. In this study, expeditious adsorption of the dyes methylene blue(MB) and rhodamine B (RhB), the antibiotics gentamicin (GM) and ofloxacin (OFL), and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs), and the removal of three types of emerging antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) from water were studied. A contaminant removal efficiency of 99 % was achieved within 7 min using G-TCNS dosage of 20 mg L−1 at pH 8 and 295 K. The adsorption capacities (Qe) of G-TCNS for the different contaminants were in the range 450–556 mg g−1. The G-TCNS exhibited high adsorption capacities as a result of their multi-layered micro-porous structure and high surface area, and improved water purification due to their excellent water selectivity. The NRs also showed high efficiencies of bacteria removal and inactivation against 107 CFU mL−1 of ARB. They were more effective as an antibacterial agent compared to (unfunctionalized) triptycene nanoswabs (TCNS) and other commercially available antibiotics. The results also revealed that G-TCNS is an efficient, highly recyclable, and eco-friendly adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of various contaminants from water.

Heterotrophic denitrification: An overlooked factor that contributes to nitrogen removal in n-DAMO mixed culture

Nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) has been recognized as a sustainable process for simultaneous removal of nitrogen and methane. The metabolisms of denitrifying anaerobic methanotrophs, including Candidatus Methanoperedens and Candidatus Methylomirabilis, have been well studied. However, potential roles of heterotrophs co-existing with these anaerobic methanotrophs are generally overlooked. In this study, we pulse-fed methane and nitrate into an anaerobic laboratory sequencing batch bioreactor and enriched a mixed culture with stable nitrate removal rate (NRR) of ∼28 mg NO3−-N L−1 d−1. Microbial community analysis indicates abundant heterotrophs, e.g., Arenimonas (5.3%–18.9%) and Fimbriimonadales ATM1 (6.4%), were enriched together with denitrifying anaerobic methanotrophs Ca. Methanoperedens (10.8%–13.2%) and Ca. Methylomirabilis (27.4%–34.3%). The results of metagenomics and batch tests suggested that the denitrifying anaerobic methanotrophs were capable of generating methane-derived intermediates (i.e., formate and acetate), which were employed by non-methanotrophic heterotrophs for denitrification and biomass growth. These findings offer new insights into the roles of heterotrophs in n-DAMO mixed culture, which may help to optimize n-DAMO process for nitrogen removal from wastewater.

MnOx catalysts with different morphologies for low temperature synergistic removal of NOx and toluene: Structure–activity relationship and mutual inhibitory effects

The simultaneous catalytic removal of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and toluene, in an existing selective catalytic reduction (SCR) unit, has drawn much attention. Exploring the interaction effects between the catalytic oxidation of toluene and the reduction of NOx is crucial to ensure the successful design and development of catalysts for their simultaneous removal. MnOx nanorod and MnOx nanocuboid were synthesized to compare their catalytic performances for the simultaneous removal of NOx and toluene. The MnOx nanorod catalyst possessed greater catalytic activity than the MnOx nanocuboid catalyst and exhibited a greater than 85% catalytic activity in the simultaneous abatement of NOx and toluene at 275 °C. The MnOx nanorod catalyst had a higher proportion of Mn4+ and a better redox ability compared with the MnOx nanocuboid, resulting in an excellent catalytic activity. Thus, it was selected as a model catalyst to investigate the interaction effects. Compared with the separate NH3-SCR and toluene oxidation reactions, there was a mutual inhibitory effect between the SCR reaction and toluene oxidation in the simultaneous removal process over the model catalyst (MnOx nanorod). This mutual inhibitory effect was investigated systematically using TPD, GC-MS and in situ DRIFTs. Mutual inhibitory effect over the model catalyst mainly manifested as follows: 1) the formation of intermediate products in the oxidation process of toluene covered the active sites; 2) the competitive adsorption of NH3 and toluene occurred; and 3) the SCR reaction and toluene oxidation process competed for reactive oxygen species.

Buffer effect of MgO on Na2SO3 to stabilize S(IV) for the enhancement in simultaneous absorption of NOx and SO2 from non-ferrous smelting gas.

Oxidation-reduction-absorption based on sulfite is a promising process for simultaneous removal of NOx and SO2. However, excessive oxidation of sulfite and competitive absorption between NOx and SO2 limit its application. A matching strategy between antioxidants and alkaline agents has been proposed to solve these problems and enhance the absorption process. The comparison results of inhibitors showed that hydroquinone exhibited long-term high-efficiency inhibition of S(IV) (SO32-/HSO3-) oxidation. The comparison of alkaline agents showed that the Na2SO3 solution with heterogeneous mixture of MgO and hydroquinone exhibited better absorption performance than that with other combinations. The absorption amounts of NOx in 0.15mol/L Na2SO3 50mL solution added 0.1% hydroquinone (HQ) with 0.09mol/L MgO were 2.24mmol, which improved 5 times than that without additives. In addition, studies on the influence of pH showed that the pH of MgO mixture could be stabilized at 9-10 for a long time, while the pH of Na2CO3 mixture decreased faster. Further studies suggested that the hydration of MgO resulted in the solution with MgO keeping high pH. This is also the main reason why the combination of MgO and hydroquinone is superior to the combination of Na2CO3 and hydroquinone in desulfurization and denitration performance.

Enhanced Phosphorus Removal during Municipal Wastewater Treatment by the Biological Aeration Filter with Modified Steel Slags

Excessive phosphorus in aquatic environments can lead to eutrophication, posing a significant deterioration of water quality. In this study, modified steel slag was used as a novel filter media in the biological aeration filter (BAF) to achieve a bioinduced phosphorus crystallization process for simultaneous removal and recovery of phosphorus from municipal wastewater. Phosphorus removal efficiency could reach 80% during 4 days of operation due to high adsorption capacity of the modified steel slag in the single BAF reactor, but the phosphorus removal efficiency decreased to 30% after 30 days of operation. The phosphorus removal efficiency of the BAF system increased to 70% under alternating anaerobic-aerobic (A/O) operation condition. Concentration of PO43−-P in anaerobic effluent reached 19.9 mg/L at 68 days of operation and exceeded that in influent (10.6 mg/L), indicating that phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs) were successfully enriched in the alternating A/O BAF system. Hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystals formation was confirmed based on analysis of scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The proposed phosphorus removal mechanism suggests that the release of phosphorus from PAOs and the release of Ca2+ and OH− from the modified steel slag is beneficial to HAP crystals formation. These results indicated that the bioinduced phosphorus crystallization process achieved to improve phosphorus removal efficiency of the alternating A/O BAF system. This finding is a significant improvement to both biological and crystallization phosphorus removal processes, and has significant potential application for removal and recovery of phosphorus in wastewater treatment.

Deciphering the simultaneous removal of carbamazepine and metronidazole by monolithic Co2AlO4@Al2O3 activated peroxymonosulfate

Reported here is a pioneering work on the co-removal of carbamazepine (CBZ) and metronidazole (MNZ) by Co2AlO4@Al2O3 millispheres activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Compared with the single removal, the reduced ratios for the removal kinetics of MNZ (72.16%) are two times higher than that of CBZ (35.41%) within initial pH 3 – 9. This is essentially due to the higher oxidation affinity of SO4•– and 1O2 toward CBZ than MNZ. Cl− facilitated the degradation of CBZ but inhibited the degradation of MNZ, probably ascribed to the formation of HOCl and Cl2•−. HCO3− and PO43− significantly inhibited the removal of CBZ and MNZ by scavenging SO4•– and/or passivating the active sites of Co2AlO4@Al2O3. The degradation of CBZ is mainly due to the electron abstraction and oxygen addition, while the primary oxidation processes of MNZ include the denitration, ring opening and/or N-C cleavage. Because of the competition of CBZ against SO4•−, the simultaneous removal process remarkably changed the main products of MNZ compared with the single removal process. The simultaneous removal of CBZ and MNZ increased the total bioaccumulation potential and mutagenicity risk of degradation products but helped to reduce their total developmental toxicity. The products formed in the co-removal process showed higher total acute toxicity to Daphnia magna than those of the single process, while for the total acute toxicity to Oral rat, the results are reversed. This work will spark more interest of simultaneously removing multiple emerging pollutants with monolithic catalysts-oriented oxidation processes.

Evaluation of Contemporary Computational Techniques to Optimize Adsorption Process for Simultaneous Removal of COD and TOC in Wastewater

This study was aimed at evaluating the artificial neural network (ANN), genetic algorithm (GA), adaptive neurofuzzy interference (ANFIS), and the response surface methodology (RSM) approaches for modeling and optimizing the simultaneous adsorptive removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) in produced water (PW) using tea waste biochar (TWBC). Comparative analysis of RSM, ANN, and ANFIS models showed mean square error (MSE) as 5.29809, 1.49937, and 0.24164 for adsorption of COD and MSE of 0.11726, 0.10241, and 0.08747 for prediction of TOC adsorption, respectively. The study showed that ANFIS outperformed the ANN and RSM in terms of fast convergence, minimum MSE, and sum of square error for prediction of adsorption data. The adsorption parameters were optimized using ANFIS-surface plots, ANN-GA hybrid, RSM-GA hybrid, and RSM optimization tool in design expert (DE) software. Maximum COD (88.9%) and TOC (98.8%) removal were predicted at pH of 7, a dosage of 300 mg/L, and contact time of 60 mins using ANFIS-surface plots. The optimization approaches showed the performance in the following order: ANFIS-surface plots>ANN-GA>RSM-GA>RSM.

Quantitative proteomic analysis reveals the metabolic characteristics and adaptive mechanism of Cupriavidus oxalaticus T2 in the process of simultaneous nitrogen and phenol removal

Phenol and ammonia in wastewater pose a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. However, the currently limited studies on single bacterium simultaneously removing phenol and nitrogen pollution have not fully elucidated the relevant metabolic mechanisms. The differences in proteomic profile after supplementing with phenol and ammonia for 6 and 24 h, respectively, were evaluated to explore the metabolic characteristics and adaptive mechanism of Cupriavidus oxalaticus T2 during the simultaneous removal process of phenol and nitrogen. Results revealed that a new potential phenol para-degradation pathway appeared in T2. Phenol induced changes in nitrogen metabolism, resulting in increased denitrification and decreased synthesis of glutamate from ammonia at 6 h. In addition, phenol exposure enhanced the expression of cytochrome oxidases with high oxygen affinity and increased ATP synthesis. The increase in chemotaxis and flagellar assembly was conducive to the uptake and utilization of phenol. The synthesis of lipoic acid and biotin was also promoted to resist phenol toxicity. Moreover, phenol triggered cellular stress response, thereby leading to the upregulation of anti-stress proteins, such as universal stress protein, iron‑sulfur cluster protein, and chaperones. This study contributes to revealing the metabolic characteristics and adaptive mechanism of T2 during simultaneous nitrogen and phenol removal. SignificancePhenol and ammonia often co-exist in wastewater, causing serious environmental problems. The information on the metabolic mechanism of simultaneously removing these two pollutants by bacteria is insufficient at present. Moreover, phenol is toxic to microbial and causes cells damage. Therefore, exploring the response mechanism of bacteria to phenol stress is conducive to understand their tolerance mechanism to aromatic compounds. In this study, the metabolic characteristics and adaptive mechanism of C. oxalaticus T2 during the simultaneous removal of phenol and nitrogen process were evaluated by comparing the proteome profiles at different stages. The results revealed the degradation pathways of phenol and nitrogen by strain T2. A variety of phenol response mechanisms were determined, including enhanced energy production, improved cell motility, increased the synthesis of lipoic acid and biotin, and combined action of multiple anti-stress proteins. This study is potentially useful to future phenol and nitrogen co-pollution bioremediation strategies and provides insight into the phenolic compound resistance mechanism in bacteria.

Solar-driven free chlorine advanced oxidation process for simultaneous removal of microcontaminants and microorganisms in natural water at pilot-scale

Contamination of natural water (NW) by emerging contaminants has been widely pointed out as one of the main challenges to ensure high-quality drinking water. Thus, the effectiveness of a solar-driven free chlorine advanced oxidation process simultaneously investigating the elimination of six organic microcontaminants (OMCs) and three bacteria from NW at a pilot-scale was evaluated in this study. Firstly, the solar/free chlorine process was studied at lab-scale using a solar simulator to evaluate the effect of free chlorine concentration (0.5–10 mg L−1) on OMC degradation and generation of toxic oxyanions (e.g., ClO3− ions). Thus, the best free chlorine concentration observed was applied for the simultaneous removal of OMCs and pathogens under natural solar light at pilot scale. At lab-scale, the solar/free chlorine (2.5 mg L−1) process achieved 80% of total degradation in 5 min (1.4 kJ L−1 of accumulative UV energy) with an oxidant consumption of 0.3 mg L−1 and without ClO3− generation. Similar results were attained under natural solar irradiation at a pilot-scale. For all bacteria strains, the legally required detection limit (DL = 1 CFU 100 mL−1) for reclaimed water reuse was attained in a short contact time. Still, more importantly, the solar/free chlorine (2.5 mg L−1) process effectively avoided the possible bacterial regrowth in the post-treated sample after six days. Finally, the combination of free chlorine with solar irradiation provided a simple and energy-efficient process for OMC and bacteria removal in NW at a pilot-scale.

Mutual inhibition mechanism of simultaneous catalytic removal of NOx and toluene on Mn-based catalysts

NOx and toluene have been identified as the dominant air pollutants in solid wasted combustion, and it is of great importance to remove these two pollutants simultaneously. Here, we found that Mn/CeO2 and Mn/TiO2 exhibited a bifunctional property in both NO reduction and toluene oxidation, and both of which could achieve 80% of conversion rate in NO reduction and toluene oxidation processes. However, the activity of both Mn/CeO2 and Mn/TiO2 decreased in simultaneous removal of NOx and toluene compared with separate NOx reduction and toluene oxidation. This indicates that there is a mutual inhibition between NOx reduction and toluene oxidation in simultaneous removal process over Mn-based catalysts, attributing to the competitive adsorption and utilization of active oxygen. In detail, the adsorption of toluene occupied the Lewis acid sites and restrained the NH3 adsorption. Meanwhile, the competitive utilization of active oxygen by NH3/NOx inhibited toluene oxidation to CO2 by active oxygen species as the reaction between NH3/NOx and active oxygen species would occur more easily.

Bioelectrochemical process for simultaneous removal of copper, ammonium and organic matter using an algae-assisted triple-chamber microbial fuel cell

Considering the adverse effect of heavy metals (such as Cu2+) on biological wastewater treatment processes, an algae-assisted triple-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) was established to remove Cu2+, COD and nitrogen sequentially, and also generate electricity. About 86.2% of the Cu2+ was removed in the first cathodic chamber, and the remaining Cu2+ was largely eliminated by algal uptake, contributing to an overall Cu2+ removal rate of 99.9% across the whole system. The nitrogen removal rate reached 79% in the system. The majority of the ammonium was assimilated by algae, and nitrogen oxides formed during the light period were denitrified at the cathode in the dark period. The variation in electrode potentials indicated that the cathode and anode potentials not only depended on the respective substrate concentrations, but also affected each other. The influence of algae on the microbial communities was greater than that of Cu2+ or the system structure. Devosia, Thauera, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter and Flavobacterium may influence nitrogen removal, while Delftia, Thauera and Pseudomonas may play an important role in power generation. The present study has developed a practical method for removing pollutants from the wastewater containing heavy metals.

Coupling of cathodic aluminum dissolution and anodic oxidation process for simultaneous removal of phosphate and ammonia in wastewaters

Removal of excessive nutrients (N and P) is one of the most concerned issues for wastewater treatment. This study presents a paired electrolytic system consisting of Al cathode and RuO2/Ti anode for the simultaneous removal of phosphate and ammonia in wastewaters. The comparative study on the dissolving behaviors of Al cathode and Al anode showed that Al cathode could achieve a continuous and stable dissolution of aluminum, thereby forming flocs and small amounts of water soluble aluminum species for decontamination. The electrogenerated OH– in the vicinity of cathode raised the local alkalinity and caused the chemical dissolution of aluminum. According to the experiment of non-electrolytic dissolution of aluminum in alkaline solution, the local pH resulting in the cathodic dissolution of Al was estimated. The paired electrolytic system showed the capability to simultaneously remove ammonia and phosphate in simulated wastewater, and the pH neutralizing effect in association with the formation of Al species could promote the electrochemical oxidation of ammonia. When the paired electrolytic system was applied to the treatment of landfill leachate, 96.9% of ammonia nitrogen, 87.4% of total phosphorous and 89.9% of COD could be eliminated after three hours of electrolysis at 80 mA/cm2. The results shown in study reveal that the dissolution process of Al cathode enables a convenient control on the dissolving-out amounts of aluminum via regulating the applied current density, and the paired electrolytic system can be developed as an energy-efficient electrochemical wastewater treating method.
