The distribution of [α/Fe] in the Milky Way disc

ABSTRACT Using a sample of red giant stars from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) Data Release 16, we infer the conditional distribution $p([\alpha /{\rm Fe}]\, |\, [{\rm Fe}/{\rm H}])$ in the Milky Way disk for the α-elements Mg, O, Si, S, and Ca. In each bin of [Fe/H] and Galactocentric radius R, we model p([α/Fe]) as a sum of two Gaussians, representing ‘low-α’ and ‘high-α’ populations with scale heights $z_1=0.45\, {\rm kpc}$ and $z_2=0.95\, {\rm kpc}$, respectively. By accounting for age-dependent and z-dependent selection effects in APOGEE, we infer the [α/Fe] distributions that would be found for a fair sample of long-lived stars covering all z. Near the Solar circle, this distribution is bimodal at sub-solar [Fe/H], with the low-α and high-α peaks clearly separated by a minimum at intermediate [α/Fe]. In agreement with previous results, we find that the high-α population is more prominent at smaller R, lower [Fe/H], and larger |z|, and that the sequence separation is smaller for Si and Ca than for Mg, O, and S. We find significant intrinsic scatter in [α/Fe] at fixed [Fe/H] for both the low-α and high-α populations, typically ∼0.04-dex. The means, dispersions, and relative amplitudes of this two-Gaussian description, and the dependence of these parameters on R, [Fe/H], and α-element, provide a quantitative target for chemical evolution models and a test for hydrodynamic simulations of disk galaxy formation. We argue that explaining the observed bimodality will probably require one or more sharp transitions in the disk’s gas accretion, star formation, or outflow history in addition to radial mixing of stellar populations.

How to bend galaxy disc profiles: the role of halo spin

Abstract The radial density profiles of stellar galaxy discs can be well approximated as an exponential. Compared to this canonical form, however, the profiles in the majority of disc galaxies show downward or upward breaks at large radii. Currently, there is no coherent explanation in a galaxy formation context of the radial profile per se, along with the two types of profile breaks. Using a set of controlled hydrodynamic simulations of disc galaxy formation, we find a correlation between the host halo's initial angular momentum and the resulting radial profile of the stellar disc: galaxies that live in haloes with a low spin parameter λ ≲ 0.03 show an up-bending break in their disc density profiles, while galaxies in haloes of higher angular momentum show a down-bending break. We find that the case of pure exponential profiles (λ ≈ 0.035) coincides with the peak of the spin parameter distribution from cosmological simulations. Our simulations not only imply an explanation of the observed behaviours, but also suggest that the physical origin of this effect is related to the amount of radial redistribution of stellar mass, which is anticorrelated with λ.

Diffuse gas properties and stellar metallicities in cosmological simulations of disc galaxy formation

We analyse the properties of the circum-galactic medium and the metal content of the stars comprising the central galaxy in eight hydrodynamical `zoom-in' simulations of disc galaxy formation. We use these properties as a benchmark for our model of galaxy formation physics implemented in the moving-mesh code AREPO, which succeeds in forming quite realistic late-type spirals in the set of `Aquarius' initial conditions of Milky Way-sized haloes. Galactic winds significantly influence the morphology of the circum-galactic medium and induce bipolar features in the distribution of heavy elements. They also affect the thermodynamic properties of the circum-galactic gas by supplying an energy input that sustains its radiative losses. Although a significant fraction of the heavy elements are transferred from the central galaxy to the halo, and even beyond the virial radius, enough metals are retained by stars to yield a peak in their metallicity distributions at about $Z_{\odot}$. All our default runs overestimate the stellar [O/Fe] ratio, an effect that we demonstrate can be rectified by an increase of the adopted SN type Ia rate. Nevertheless, the models have difficulty in producing stellar metallicity gradients of the same strength as observed in the Milky Way.

MaGICC-WDM: the effects of warm dark matter in hydrodynamical simulations of disc galaxy formation

We study the effect of warm dark matter (WDM) on hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation as part of the Making Galaxies in a Cosmological Context (MaGICC) project. We simulate three different galaxies using three WDM candidates of 1, 2 and 5 keV and compare results with pure cold dark matter simulations. WDM slightly reduces star formation and produces less centrally concentrated stellar profiles. These effects are most evident for the 1 keV candidate but almost disappear for |$m_ {\rm \small {wdm}} >2$| keV. All simulations form similar stellar discs independent of WDM particle mass. In particular, the disc scalelength does not change when WDM is considered. The reduced amount of star formation in the case of 1 keV particles is due to the effects of WDM on merging satellites which are on average less concentrated and less gas rich. The altered satellites cause a reduced starburst during mergers because they trigger weaker disc instabilities in the main galaxy. Nevertheless we show that disc galaxy evolution is much more sensitive to stellar feedback than it is to WDM candidate mass. Overall, we find that WDM, especially when restricted to current observational constraints (⁠|$m_ {\rm \small {wdm}} >2$| keV), has a minor impact on disc galaxy formation.

Using Mock Velocity Field Observations to Determine the Dark Matter Distribution in Dwarf Galaxies

High-resolution Hα velocity fields provide important observational constraints on the dark matter distribution in dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies. These two-dimensional data show that dark matter-dominated galaxies tend to be more consistent with cored halos than cuspy halos, at odds with theoretical expectations. Using N-body/SPH simulations of disk galaxy formation in cuspy spherical and triaxial dark matter halos, as well as cored dark matter halos, we “observe” the simulated galaxies under a variety of realistic observing conditions. We use these mock IFU velocity field observations to determine how well the underlying dark matter halo can be recovered and to test the hypothesis that cusps can be obscured by triaxial dark matter halos.

The modelling of feedback processes in cosmological simulations of disc galaxy formation

We conduct a systematic study of the angular momentum problem in numerical simulations of disk galaxy formation. We investigate the role of numerical resolution using a semi-cosmological setup which combines an efficient use of the number of particles in an isolated halo while preserving the hierarchical build-up of the disk through the merging of clumps. We perform the same simulation varying the resolution over 4 orders of magnitude. Independent on the level of resolution, the loss of angular momentum stays the same and can be tied to dynamical friction during the build-up phase. This is confirmed in a cosmological simulation. We also perform simulations including star formation and star formation and supernova feedback. While the former has no influence on the angular momentum problem, the latter reduces the loss to a level potentially in agreement with observations. This is achieved through a suppression of early star formation and therefore the formation of a large, slowly rotating bulge. We conclude that feedback is a critical component to achieve realistic disk galaxies in cosmological simulations. Numerical resolution is important, but by itself not capable of solving the angular momentum problem.

X-ray coronae in simulations of disc galaxy formation

The existence of X-ray luminous gaseous coronae around massive disc galaxies is a long-standing prediction of galaxy formation theory in the cold dark matter cosmogony. This prediction has garnered little observational support, with non-detections commonplace and detections for only a relatively small number of galaxies which are much less luminous than expected. We investigate the coronal properties of a large sample of bright, disc-dominated galaxies extracted from the GIMIC suite of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations recently presented by Crain et al. Remarkably, the simulations reproduce the observed scalings of X-ray luminosity with K-band luminosity and star formation rate and, when account is taken of the density structure of the halo, with disc rotation velocity as well. Most of the star formation in the simulated galaxies (which have realistic stellar mass fractions) is fuelled by gas cooling from a quasi-hydrostatic hot corona. However, these coronae are more diffuse, and of a lower luminosity, than predicted by the analytic models of White & Frenk because of a substantial increase in entropy at z ~ 1-3. Both the removal of low entropy gas by star formation and energy injection from supernovae contribute to this increase in entropy, but the latter is dominant for halo masses M_200 <~ 10^(12.5) Msun. Only a small fraction of the mass of the hot gas is outflowing as a wind but, because of its high density and metallicity, it contributes disproportionally to the X-ray emission. The bulk of the X-ray emission, however, comes from the diffuse quasi-hydrostatic corona which supplies the fuel for ongoing star formation in discs today. Future deep X-ray observations with high spectral resolution (e.g. with NeXT/ASTRO-H or IXO) should be able to map the velocity structure of the hot gas and test this fundamental prediction of current galaxy formation theory.

Simulations of Disk Galaxy Formation in their Cosmological Context

AbstractTogether with the discovery of the accelerated expansion of the present Universe and measurements of large-scale structure at low redshift, observations of the cosmic microwave background have established a standard paradigm in which all cosmic structure grew from small fluctuations generated at very early times in a flat universe which today consists of 72% dark energy, 23.5% dark matter and 4.5% ordinary baryons. The CMB sky provides us with a direct image of this universe when it was 400,000 years old and very nearly uniform. The galaxy formation problem is then to understand how observed galaxies with all their regularity and diversity arose from these very simple initial conditions. Although gravity is the prime driver, many physical processes appear to play an important role in this transformation, and direct numerical simulation has become the principal tool for detailed investigation of the complex and strongly nonlinear interactions between them.The evolution of structure in the gravitationally dominant Cold Dark Matter distribution can now be simulated in great detail, provided the effects of the baryons are ignored, and there is general consensus for the results on scales relevant to the formation of galaxies like our own. The basic nonlinear units are so-called “dark matter halos”, slowly rotating, triaxial, quasi-equilibrium systems with a universal cusped density profile and substantial substructure in the form of a host of much less massive subhalos which are concentrated primarily in their outer regions.Attempts to include the baryons, and so to model the formation of the visible parts of galaxies, have given much more diverse results. It has been known for 30 years that substantial feedback, presumably from stellar winds and supernovae, is required to prevent overcooling of gas and excessive star formation in the early stages of galaxy assembly. When realistic galaxy formation simulations first became possible in the early 1990's, this problem was immediately confirmed. Without effective feedback, typical halos produced galaxies which were too massive, too concentrated and had too little disk to be consistent with observation.Simple models for disk formation from the mid 1990's show that the angular momentum predicted for collapsing dark halos is sufficient for them to build a disk population similar to that observed. Direct simulations have repeatedly failed to confirm this picture, however, because nonlinear effects lead to substantial transfer of angular momentum between the various components. In most cases the condensing baryonic material loses angular momentum to the dark matter, and the final galaxy ends up with a disk that is too compact or contains too small a fraction of the stars.These problems have been reduced as successive generations of simulations have dramatically improved the numerical resolution and have introduced “better” implementations of feedback (i.e. more successful at building disks). Despite this, no high-resolution simulation has so far been able to produce a present-day disk galaxy with a bulge-to-disk mass ratio much less than one in a proper ΛCDM context. Such galaxies are common in the real Universe; our own Milky Way is a good example. The variety of results obtained by different groups show that this issue is very sensitive to how star formation and feedback are treated, and all implementations of these processes to date have been much too schematic to be confident of their predictions.The major outstanding issues I see related to disk galaxies and their formation are the following: Do real disk galaxies have the NFW halos predicted by the ΛCDM cosmology? If not, could the deviations have been produced by the formation of the observed baryonic components, or must the basic structure formation picture be changed? How are Sc and later type galaxies made? Why don't our simulations produce them? What determines which galaxies become barred and which not? Can we demonstrate that secular evolution produces the observed population of (pseudo)bulges from pre-existing disks? How does the observed population of thin disks survive bombardment by substructure and the other transient potential fluctuations expected in ΛCDM halos? Is a better treatment of feedback really the answer? If so, can we demonstrate it using chemical abundances as fossil tracers? And how can we best use observations at high redshift to clarify these formation issues?

Boxy/peanut and discy bulges: formation, evolution and properties

AbstractThe class ‘bulges’ contains objects with very different formation and evolution paths and very different properties. I review two types of ‘bulges’, the boxy/peanut bulges (B/Ps) and the discy bulges. The former are parts of bars seen edge-on, have their origin in vertical instabilities of the disc and are somewhat shorter in extent than bars. Their stellar population is similar to that of the inner part of the disc from which they formed. Discy bulges have a disc-like outline, i.e., seen face-on they are circular or oval and seen edge-on they are thin. Their extent is of the order of 5 times smaller than that of the boxy/peanut bulges. They form from the inflow of mainly gaseous material to the centre of the galaxy and from subsequent star formation. They thus contain a lot of young stars and gas. Bulges of different types often coexist in the same galaxy. I review the main known results on these two types of bulges and present new simulation results.B/Ps form about 1Gyr after the bar, via a vertical buckling. At that time the bar strength decreases, its inner part becomes thicker – forming the peanut or boxy shape – and the ratio $\sigma_z^2/\sigma_r^2$ increases. A second buckling episode is seen in simulations with strong bars, also accompanied by a thickening of the peanut and a weakening of the bar. The properties of the B/Ps correlate strongly with those of the bar: stronger bars have stronger peanuts, a more flat-topped vertical density distribution and have experienced more bucklings.I also present simulations of disc galaxy formation, which include the formation of a discy bulge. Decomposition of their radial density profile into an exponential disc and a Sérsic bulge gives realistic values for the disc and bulge scale-lengths and mass ratios, and a Sérsic shape index of the order of 1.It is thus clear that classical bulges, B/P bulges and discy bulges are three distinct classes of objects and that lumping them together can lead to confusion. To avoid this, the two latter could be called B/P features and inner discs, respectively.

The Tully-Fisher relation and its evolution with redshift in cosmological simulations of disc galaxy formation

We present predictions on the evolution of the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation with redshift, based on cosmological N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of disc galaxy formation and evolution. The simulations invoke star formation and stellar feedback, chemical evolution with non-instantaneous recycling, metallicity dependent radiative cooling and effects of a meta-galactic UV field, including simplified radiative transfer. At z=0, the simulated and empirical TF relations are offset by about 0.4 magnitudes (1 sigma) in the B and I bands. The origin of these offsets is somewhat unclear, but it may not necessarily be a problem of the simulations only. As to evolution, we find a brightening of the TF relation between z=0 and z=1 of about 0.85 mag in rest-frame B band, with a non-evolving slope. The brightening we predict is intermediate between the (still quite discrepant) observational estimates. This evolution is primarily a luminosity effect, while the stellar mass TF relation shows negligible evolution. The individual galaxies do gain stellar mass between z=1 and z=0, by a 50-100%; but they also correspondingly increase their characteristic circular speed. As a consequence, individually they mainly evolve ALONG the stellar mass TF relation, while the relation as such does not show any significant evolution.

Angular momentum transport and disc morphology in smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of galaxy formation

We perform controlled N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of disc galaxy formation by cooling a rotating gaseous mass distribution inside equilibrium cuspy spherical and triaxial dark matter haloes. We systematically study the angular momentum transport and the disc morphology as we increase the number of dark matter and gas particles from 10 4 to 10 6 , and decrease the gravitational softening from 2 kpc to 50 pc. The angular momentum transport, disc morphology and radial profiles depend sensitively on force and mass resolution. At low resolution, similar to that used in most current cosmological simulations, the cold gas component has lost half of its initial angular momentum via different mechanisms. The angular momentum is transferred primarily to the hot halo component, by resolution-dependent hydrodynamical and gravitational torques; the latter arising from asymmetries in the mass distribution. In addition, disc particles can lose angular momentum while they are still in the hot phase by artificial viscosity. In the central disc, particles can transfer away over 99 per cent of their initial angular momentum due to spiral structure and/or the presence of a central bar. The strength of this transport also depends on force and mass resolution - large softening will suppress the bar instability, and low mass resolution enhances the spiral structure. This complex interplay between resolution and angular momentum transfer highlights the complexity of simulations of galaxy formation even in isolated haloes. With 10 6 gas and dark matter particles, disc particles lose only 10-20 per cent of their original angular momentum, yet we are unable to produce pure exponential profiles due to the steep density peak of baryons within the central kpc. We speculate that the central luminosity excess observed in many Sc-Sd galaxies may be due to star formation in gas that has been transported to the central regions by spiral patterns.

The RAVE survey: constraining the local Galactic escape speed

We report new constraints on the local escape speed of our Galaxy. Our analysis is based on a sample of high-velocity stars from the RAVE survey and two previously published data sets. We use cosmological simulations of disc galaxy formation to motivate our assumptions on the shape of the velocity distribution, allowing for a significantly more precise measurement of the escape velocity compared to previous studies. We find that the escape velocity lies within the range 498 <v(esc) <608 km s(-1) (90 per cent confidence), with a median likelihood of 544 km s(-1). The fact that v(esc)(2) is significantly greater than 2v(circ)(2) (where v(circ) = 220 km s(-1) is the local circular velocity) implies that there must be a significant amount of mass exterior to the solar circle, that is, this convincingly demonstrates the presence of a dark halo in the Galaxy. We use our constraints on v(esc) to determine the mass of the Milky Way halo for three halo profiles. For example, an adiabatically contracted NFW halo model results in a virial mass of 1.42(-0.54)(+1.14) x 10(12) M-circle dot and virial radius of (90 per cent confidence). For this model the circular velocity at the virial radius is 142(-21)(+31) km s(-1). Although our halo masses are model dependent, we find that they are in good agreement with each other.

The RAVE Survey: Constraining the Local Galactic Escape Speed

AbstractWe report new constraints on the local escape speed of our Galaxy. Our analysis is based on a sample of high velocity stars from the RAVE survey and two previously published datasets (the Geneva-Copenhagen survey and the Beers et al. catalogue of metal-poor stars). We use cosmological simulations of disk galaxy formation to motivate our assumptions on the shape of the velocity distribution, allowing for a significantly more precise measurement of the escape velocity compared to previous studies. We find that the escape velocity lies within the range 492 km s−1 &lt; vesc &lt;594 kms (90% confidence), with a median likelihood of 536 kms. The fact that v2esc is significantly greater than 2v2circ implies that there must be a significant amount of mass exterior to the Solar circle, i.e. this convincingly demonstrates the presence of a dark halo in the Galaxy. For a simple isothermal halo, one can calculate that the minimum radial extent is ~54 kpc. We use our constraints on vesc to determine the mass of the Milky Way halo for three halo profiles. For example, an adiabatically contracted NFW halo model results in a virial mass of 1.31+0.97−0.49 × 1012M⊙ and virial radius of 297+60−44 kpc (90% confidence). For this model the circular velocity at the virial radius is 141+27−19kms. Although our halo masses are model dependent, we find that they are in good agreement with each other.

Internal Alignment of the Halos of Disk Galaxies in Cosmological Hydrodynamic Simulations

Seven cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of disk galaxy formation are analyzed to determine the alignment of the disk within the dark matter halo and the internal structure of the halo. We find that the orientation of the outer halo, beyond ~0.1rvir, is unaffected by the presence of the disk. In contrast, the inner halo is aligned such that the halo minor axis aligns with the disk axis. The relative orientations of these two regions of the halo are uncorrelated. The alignment of the disk and inner halo appears to take place simultaneously through their joint evolution. The lack of connection between these two regions of the halo should be taken into account when modeling tidal streams in the halos of disk galaxies and when calculating intrinsic alignments of disk galaxies based on the properties of dark matter halos.

Cosmological simulations of the high-redshift radio universe

Using self-consistent cosmological simulations of disc galaxy formation, we analyse the 1.4 GHz radio flux from high-redshift progenitors of present-day normal spirals within the context of present-day and planned next-generation observational facilities. We demonstrate that while current radio facilities such as the Very Large Array (VLA) are unlikely to trace these progenitors beyond redshifts z 1, and may be a non-negligible contributor to the micro-Jansky source counts derived from current deep VLA cm-wave surveys.

Mass to Light Ratio, Initial Mass Function, and Chemical Evolution in Disk Galaxies

AbstractCosmological simulations of disk galaxy formation, when compared to the observed Tully–Fisher relation, suggest a low mass to light (M/L) ratio for the stellar component in spirals. We show that a number of 'bottom-light' initial mass functions (IMFs) suggested independently in the literature, do imply M/L ratios as low as required, at least for late type spirals (Sbc–Sc). However the typical M/L ratio, and correspondingly the zero point of the Tully–Fisher relation, is expected to vary considerably with Hubble type.Bottom-light IMFs tend to have a metal production in excess of what is typically estimated for spiral galaxies. Suitable tuning of the IMF slope and mass limits, post-supernova fallback of metals onto black holes or metal outflows must then be invoked, to reproduce the observed chemical properties of disk galaxies.

Forming stars on a viscous time-scale: the key to exponential stellar profiles in disc galaxies?

We argue for implementing star formation on a viscous time-scale in hydrodynamical simulations of disc galaxy formation and evolution. Modelling two-dimensional isolated disc galaxies with the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (BGK) hydrocode, we verify the analytic claim of various authors that if the characteristic time-scale for star formation is equal to the viscous time-scale in discs, the resulting stellar profile is exponential on several scalelengths whatever the initial gas and dark matter profile. This casts new light on both numerical and semi-analytical disc formation simulations that either (a) commence star formation in an already exponential gaseous disc, (b) begin a disc simulation with conditions known to lead to an exponential, i.e. the collapse of a spherically symmetric nearly uniform sphere of gas in solid-body rotation under the assumption of specific angular momentum conservation, or (c) in simulations performed in a hierarchical context, tune their feedback processes to delay disc formation until the dark matter haloes are slowly evolving and without much substructure so that the gas has the chance to collapse under conditions known to give exponentials. In such models, star formation follows a Schmidt-like law, which for lack of a suitable time-scale, resorts to an efficiency parameter. With star formation prescribed on a viscous time-scale, however, we find gas and star fractions after ∼12 Gyr that are consistent with observations without having to invoke a ‘fudge factor’ for star formation. Our results strongly suggest that despite our gap in understanding the exact link between star formation and viscosity, the viscous time-scale is indeed the natural time-scale for star formation.

Formation of Disk Galaxies: Warm Dark Matter and the Angular Momentum Problem

We have performed TreeSPH simulations of disk galaxy formation in various warm dark matter (WDM) cosmologies. Our results indicate that for a range of WDM free-streaming masses, the disk galaxy formation angular momentum problem can be considerably alleviated (and, we speculate, perhaps even completely resolved) by going to the WDM structure formation scenario, without having to invoke stellar feedback processes. They also strongly suggest that part of the angular momentum problem is due to numerical effects, most likely related to the shock-capturing artificial viscosity used in smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Furthermore, we find that we can match the observed I-band Tully-Fisher (TF) relation, provided that the mass-to-light ratio of disk galaxies is M/LI 0.6-0.7. We argue that this is a fairly reasonable value compared to various dynamical and spectrophotometric estimates, including two given in this paper. Finally, we extensively discuss possible physical candidates for WDM particles. We find that the most promising are neutrinos with weaker or stronger interactions than normal, majorons (light pseudo-Goldstone bosons), or mirror- or shadow-world neutrinos.
