Exact solutions ofSH wave equation in transversely isotropic inhomogeneous elastic media

TheSH wave equation in a transversely isotropic inhomogeneous elastic medium, where the elastic parameters and density are functions of vertical coordinate, is considered. A general procedure is given for finding the inhomogeneities for which the equation can be solved in terms of hypergeometric, Whittaker, Bessel and exponential functions. A few simple inhomogeneities and the corresponding solutions in terms of these transcendental functions are presented.

Exact solutions of SH wave equation for inhomogeneous media

Abstract The SH wave equation in a vertically inhomogeneous elastic medium has been considered. It is possible to determine all vertical inhomogeneities for which the SH wave equation can be solved in terms of standard transcendental functions. The inhomogeneities where either shear-wave velocity, modulus of rigidity, or density is constant have also been considered. A few simple inhomogeneities and their solutions in terms of hypergeometric, Whittaker, Bessel and exponential functions have been given.

Model for the Metal-Nonmetal Transition in Impure Semiconductors

It is convenient to classify the impurity states in semiconductors into three groups: low, intermediate, and high. Even at high concentrations anomalous (i.e., nonmetallic) properties are observed. A simple inhomogeneity model is proposed in which the impurity states are regarded as spatial mixtures of metallic and nonmetallic regions. The model provides an explanation of the anomalous properties, at least qualitatively.

On the use of stress values as an exploration tool

This paper discusses the possibility of using readily available isallo stress lines referring to the compressional angle γ, as an exploration tool. It is shown that inhomogeneities in the Earth will produce anomalies in the isallo stress lines. Conversely, stress anomalies can be interpreted in terms of inhomogeneities in the Earth. The stress anomalies produced by a simple inhomogeneity are discussed which serves to illustrate the idea.
