Palladium catalyzed direct allylation of azlactones with simple allylic alcohols in the absence of any activators

The first example of the readily scalable direct allylic alkylation of azlactones with simple allylic alcohols has been developed, which is catalyzed by Pd(PPh3)4 alone in the absence of any activators under neutral conditions.

Vanadyl arsenates as catalysts for selective oxidation of organic sulfides and alkenes

Two vanadyl arsenates templated with ethylendiamonium (EnVAs) and piperazonium (PipVAs) were evaluated as catalysts for the oxidation of thioethers and alkenes, using H 2O 2 and t-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as oxidants. The intrinsic activity of EnVAs was higher than that of PipVAs for the oxidation of sulfides. Similar results were obtained when using either H 2O 2 or TBHP as oxidants. However, the sterical effects were enhanced when TBHP was used and higher selectivities towards sulfoxides were achieved with this oxidant. The catalytic activity of the V-based materials in the epoxidation of simple alkenes and allylic alcohols was assessed. Upon reuse, both materials show no significant decrease in their catalytic properties.

Diastereoselective Gold-Mediated Substitution of Allylic Alcohols

Although nucleophilic addition to alkynes and allenes has been actively studied with gold catalysts recently, similar reactions with alkenes have received much less attention. The authors report that Au(I) and Au(III) can be used in ­intramolecular additions of oxygen nucleophiles to simple allylic alcohols. The reaction is synthetically equivalent to the hydroalkoxylation of allenes, with the advantage that the starting materials 1 are easier to prepare than the corresponding allenes. It is noteworthy that even in cases where the allylic alcohol was primary, no preactivation as a leaving group was needed (2a-d). The only byproduct of the reaction is water.

Isomerization Reactions of Allylic Alcohols into Ketones with the Grubbs Reagent

Allylic alcohols were isomerized into ketones by the action of the Grubbs reagent. Some model alcohols were prepared and tested under similar conditions to reveal that less substituted alkenes rearrange more easily. More hindered alcohols are stable under these conditions, however, the simple allylic alcohols tend to isomerize producing ethyl ketone and the corresponding degraded methyl ketone.

WO 4 2−-exchanged LDH catalyses the epoxidation of simple olefins and allylic alcohols. Substrate reactivity, chemo- and regioselectivity vary markedly with the polarity of the peroxotungstate environment.

Stereoselective synthesis of enantiopure 4,5-dihydroxy-2-alkene esters from simple allylic alcohols

A general stereoselective synthesis of 4.5-dihydroxy-2-alkene esters is developed using the photo-induced rearrangement of α,β-epoxy diazomethyl ketones. Starting with readily available enantiopure allylic alcohols that contain a chiral center at C 4, i.e. a protected secondary alcohol function, a neighboring stereogenic center is introduced by irradiation of the mentioned diazo ketones. The configuration of this newly introduced center is determined by the chiral inductor used in the Sharpless epoxidatian of the allylic alcohol and therefore can be selected at will.

Regioselective epoxidation of allylic alcohols with monoperoxyphthalic acid in water

The epoxidation of olefinic alcohols in water only has been investigated. Simple allylic alcohols are eporidized readily and with high yields by m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid. Polyolefinic alcohols are eporidized regioselectively and with excellent yields by monoperoxyphthalic acid controlling the pH of the medium. The reactions have been carried out in the presence and absence of surfactants, and their role has been investigated
