Assessment of academic burnout among undergraduate medical and health sciences students: a survey study from the United Arab Emirates

PurposeThis study aims to assess the prevalence of burnout among undergraduate medical and health science students and to identify the factors associated with its development.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional study was conducted involving students from Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health Science University. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey was used to evaluate three subscales of burnout. Ethical considerations were met, and informed written consent was obtained from participants. Bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between demographic, personal and school environment factors and burnout.FindingsOut of 453 students surveyed, the majority were females (74.8%) aged 18–20 years (60%). Significant levels of burnout were reported, with emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment affecting over half of the participants (69%). Factors such as being in the clinical years, long-distance commuting challenges and involuntary college selection were identified as predictors of burnout.Research limitations/implicationsWhile the study provides valuable insights, limitations may include the specific context of the university and potential biases in self-reported data.Practical implicationsThe findings underscore the importance of raising awareness, maintaining work-life balance and implementing coping strategies to support student well-being and foster a positive learning environment. Suggestions include time management and seeking guidance from mentors or mental health professionals.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the understanding of burnout among medical and health science students, especially within the unique context of the United Arab Emirates, given the convergence of students from diverse nationalities and cultural backgrounds.

A Mixed Method Analysis of Burnout and Turnover Intentions among Higher Education Professionals during COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic rapidly and dramatically altered higher education, including changes to the workplace. Many staff and faculty positions were eliminated, while other employees experienced furloughs or reduced work hours. This study examines the experiences of 1,080 higher education professionals from 782 institutions of higher education in the United States serving in various functional roles during the COVID-19 pandemic. We utilized an explanatory sequential mixed methods research design to examine quantitative and qualitative survey data from October 2020 to understand how jobs in higher education changed during the pandemic and how these changes were associated with individuals’ burnout and intention to leave higher education. Using multiple regression and thematic analysis and the job demands and resources framework, we find that higher education professionals who experienced significant disruption in their work had increased odds of experiencing burnout. We also find that eliminating staff positions and significant levels of burnout were associated with increased intentions to leave their current profession in higher education. In open-ended responses, higher education professionals described how increased job demands through decreased staff and increased workloads were not accompanied with increased resources, leading to burnout. These working conditions negatively affected participants’ personal lives, including their physical and mental health. We conclude with recommendations for research on working conditions in higher education in the pandemic-era and emphasize that institutional leaders should seek systemic changes to support employees.

Prevalence of burnout syndrome and its related risk factors among physicians working in primary health care centers of the Ministry of Health, Al Ahsa region, Saudi Arabia, 2018-2019.

Burnout syndrome (BS) is a relatively common occupational problem. It is a psychological and behavioral syndrome described by three dimensions: emotional exhaustion (EE); depersonalization (DP); and low personal accomplishment (PA).Objectives:This study aims to calculate the prevalence of BS and its related risk factors among physicians of primary health care centers (PHCCs) of the Ministry of Health (MOH, Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia.Materials and Method:A cross-sectional study was conducted in which 280 physicians working in PHCCs were selected as a comprehensive sample, the response rate was 80.7%. We excluded the trainee of residency programs, interns, and hospital physicians providing partial service in PHCCs. The data was collected by using two-part self-administered questionnaire including sociodemographic data, working conditions, and Maslach Burnout Inventory™-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel—MBI-HSS (MP). This data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program.Results:The mean score for EE was 24.99 ± 11.54 SD. The mean score for DP was 9.19 ± 6.13 SD. For PA, it was 29.41 ± 9.9 SD. The percentage of participants who scored high in EE was 47.3%. About one-half of the participants scored high DP and 59.7% had diminished PA. About one-quarter of the participants (24.3%) scored high burnout in all three dimensions. High EE was present in ages from 35 to 45 years, Saudi participants, rotating or covering physicians, and participants who were satisfied with their job. High DP was seen in Saudi physicians, family physicians, rotating or covering physicians, those who were not satisfied with their job, and physicians who work in rural areas. Low PA was seen in physicians who were not satisfied with their job, rotating or covering physicians, participants who do not have tasks other than clinical work, and physicians who work in Omran sector.Conclusion:There is a significant level of burnout among physicians working in PHCCs in Al Ahsa. High burnout was associated with some risk factors. Further research is needed to study this problem in depth.

The Roles of Empathy, Attachment Style, and Burnout in Pharmacy Students’ Academic Satisfaction

Objective. To investigate empathy, burnout, and attachment style, and explore the relationships between these variables and academic satisfaction in a group of pharmacy students. Methods. Students enrolled in the first two years (n=200) and last two years (n=210) of a five-year master's degree program in pharmaceutical sciences were invited to participate. The data collected included sociodemographic characteristics; responses on the Portuguese version of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) to assess empathy levels; responses on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) to measure emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment; responses on the Adult Attachment Scale (AAS) to evaluate students' attachment style; and responses on an original academic satisfaction scale. Results. Although students in both groups had similar levels of empathy, female students had significantly higher scores in the IRI subscales and in emotional exhaustion. Students in the last two years of the program had significantly higher depersonalization scores. The majority of students reported that they were satisfied with the quality of their academic experience, however, the satisfaction scores of students enrolled in their first two years were significantly higher. Attachment styles explained 14% of all students' depersonalization and academic satisfaction scores (11%). Burnout explained 39% of all students' academic dissatisfaction. Conclusion. Although a majority of pharmacy students were satisfied with their academic life, burnout negatively influenced the academic satisfaction of some students completing the final years of their education. The type of interpersonal relationship students have influences their ability to understand patients and the quality of their learning experience. A large percentage of students indicated they had a significant level of burnout, which underscores the need to provide preventive and restorative interventions for these students.

Factors Influencing Work-Life Balance in Physicians and Advance Practice Clinicians and the Effect of Heartfulness Meditation Conference on Burnout.

BackgroundBurnout levels have risen in recent years and satisfaction with work–life balance has decreased. Individual and organizational factors may affect burnout in physicians and advance practice clinicians (APCs). Meditation is a tool to mitigate stress and enhance well-being. In this study, we assessed the factors affecting work–life balance in physicians and APCs. We also measured the impact of Heartfulness meditation conference on burnout.MethodsPhysicians and APCs were surveyed through an abbreviated Maslach burnout inventory (aMBI) to assess the burnout levels and a question to assess the factors influencing work–life balance. Wellness initiatives included either attending a Heartfulness meditation conference or reading a book about burnout and wellness (approximated at a 3-h read). A repeat aMBI survey was sent 8 weeks after the conference. Pre- and postburnout scores were assessed.ResultsOf the 1393 physicians and APCs, 537 responded to the aMBI, and there were 414 comments (663 factors) for the question on work–life balance. Among the respondents, 60.5% and 32% had symptoms of moderate to severe emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization, respectively. Twenty-eight percent of the respondents had symptoms of moderate to low personal accomplishment. The major factors impacting work–life balance included work load, work flow, and scheduling. A follow-up aMBI survey was completed by 79 from the conference group and 264 from the nonconference group. In the age-group between 30 and 50 for the conference group (n = 40), mean EE decreased from 9.8 to 8.6 with statistical significance (P = .014). There was no statistically significant change in the nonconference group in any age-group.ConclusionWorkload, workflow, and scheduling issues were the major factors affecting work–life balance. There is a significant level of burnout in physicians and APCs. Heartfulness meditation conference was associated with a significant decrease in EE in those aged 30 to 50 years. There was no significant change seen in the nonconference/book reading group.

Burnout, stress and satisfaction among Australian and New Zealand radiation oncology trainees.

IntroductionTo evaluate the incidence of burnout among radiation oncology trainees in Australia and New Zealand and the stress and satisfaction factors related to burnout.MethodsA survey of trainees was conducted in mid‐2015. There were 42 Likert scale questions on stress, 14 Likert scale questions on satisfaction and the Maslach Burnout Inventory‐Human Services Survey assessed burnout. A principal component analysis identified specific stress and satisfaction areas. Categorical variables for the stress and satisfaction factors were computed. Associations between respondent's characteristics and stress and satisfaction subscales were examined by independent sample t‐tests and analysis of variance. Effect sizes were calculated using Cohens's d when significant mean differences were observed. This was also done for respondent characteristics and the three burnout subscales. Multiple regression analyses were performed.ResultsThe response rate was 81.5%. The principal component analysis for stress identified five areas: demands on time, professional development/training, delivery demands, interpersonal demands and administration/organizational issues. There were no significant differences by demographic group or area of interest after P‐values were adjusted for the multiple tests conducted. The principal component analysis revealed two satisfaction areas: resources/professional activities and value/delivery of services. There were no significant differences by demographic characteristics or area of interest in the level of satisfaction after P‐values were adjusted for the multiple tests conducted. The burnout results revealed 49.5% of respondents scored highly in emotional exhaustion and/or depersonalization and 13.1% had burnout in all three measures. Multiple regression analysis revealed the stress subscales ‘demands on time’ and ‘interpersonal demands’ were associated with emotional exhaustion. ‘Interpersonal demands’ was also associated with depersonalization and correlated negatively with personal accomplishment. The satisfaction of value/delivery of services subscale was associated with higher levels of personal accomplishment.ConclusionsThere is a significant level of burnout among radiation oncology trainees in Australia and New Zealand. Further work addressing intervention would be appropriate to reduce levels of burnout.

Personal meaning and eating disorder treatment: Comment on Warren et al.

Comments on an article by C. S. Warren et al. (see record 2013-21802-001). Clinicians who treat eating disorders are reported by Warren, Schafer, Crowley, and Olivardia (2013, pp. 553-564) to have significant levels of burnout, with significant observed relationships to important factors such as experience in the field and recent patient mortality. The levels of burnout among those who persist in treating patients with eating disorders, however, were lower than expected, and clinicians with a personal history of eating disorders reported finding higher levels of meaning in their work. This comment explores the possibility that many eating disorder clinicians find satisfaction and meaning in this work for reasons that may not be immediately obvious. Additionally, it considers the possibility that some of the personal meaning derived from clinicians who report themselves "recovered" may be due to residual, unrecognized, or unreported emotional struggle surrounding eating and exercise that lends additional personal significance to this work.

Psychological distress and burnout in australian employment service workers: Two years on

During 2001, 152 case managers providing intensive assistance to the unemployed completed the 12‐item General Health Questionnaire (D. P. Goldberg, 1978) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI; C. Maslach, S. E. Jackson, & M. P. Leiter, 1996). Of the 152 case managers, 48% endorsed responses indicating psychological distress, and on emotional exhaustion, the core dimension of burnout on the MBI, the mean for these case managers was significantly higher than that published for other human service workers. The results confirm data from a 1999 longitudinal study and indicate significant levels of burnout and distress in employment service case managers in the Australian Job Network.

Burnout and the academic teaching librarian: an examination of the problem and suggested solutions

Research indicates significant levels of burnout in academic teaching librarians. This article describes parallels with other “helping professions” and examines characteristics, causes, and solutions of burnout, inside and outside the classroom. Solutions should be sought in research on similar professions and their effectiveness should be measured.
