The prevalence of obesity in adolescents has increased very significantly. One of the causes of the high number of cases of obesity is that the diet changes. The purpose of community service activities is to provide education related to healthy food to adolescents/students to prevent overnutrition and obesity in adolescents. The method of activity in this community service activity is counseling with a target of 29 class XII students of SMKN 62 Jakarta. The results of the counseling showed a significant increase in student knowledge as seen from the significant difference between the prestest and postest scores. Providing education through counseling is an effective effort that can be used in nutrition and health education

Implementation of a Standardized National HIV Curriculum in a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program.

Although efforts have been made to improve and integrate an HIV curriculum in schools of nursing, little has been done to standardize the integration of competencies related to HIV care in primary care nurse practitioner (NP) programs. The purpose of this study was to understand the effect of integrating the 6 core competencies from the National HIV Curriculum (NHC) on NP students' perceived knowledge about HIV care. This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre/posttest design that measured NP students' self-perceived knowledge of the 6 core competencies from the NHC. A total of 375 student NHC training sessions were implemented across 5 semesters (fall 2019 through fall 2021 academic years). In each of the 3 courses that integrated the NHC, there were statistically significant increases in student knowledge from pre- to posttest for each of the 6 competencies. This project supports using a standardized HIV curriculum as part of primary care NP curricula.

Enhancing student competency in risky clinical environments: Evaluating an online education program

ObjectiveTrainees across the healthcare sector contend with ubiquitous risk during clinical placement. This has prompted educative action to enhance student competency in unpredictable clinical environments. The objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the impact of Risk Aware, an online blended simulation‐based learning program, upon student preparedness and confidence for clinical placement.MethodA sequential explanatory mixed‐methods design was utilised to evaluate Risk Aware. The Risk Aware program was trialled on 149 first‐year professional psychology postgraduate students across seven Australian universities prior to their first clinical placement. Repeated measures t‐tests investigated the impact of Risk Aware learning modules upon student knowledge and confidence; descriptive statistics and analysis of frequencies summarised student competency following Risk Aware (N = 120). Follow‐up qualitative interviews explored the nature of student knowledge and confidence, and student impressions of Risk Aware (N = 8).ResultsPreliminary quantitative findings demonstrated significant increases in student knowledge and confidence (p < 0.05), and low‐to‐average competence, after Risk Aware. Qualitative results corroborated increases in student knowledge and confidence and pointed to early signs of clinical competency. Student impressions of Risk Aware were generally positive and included suggestions to improve program usability.ConclusionsFindings highlight Risk Aware's capacity to increase students' ability to identify and detail responses to risks arising during placement. Further field testing to ascertain students' application of skills is required. Results will inform program modifications to enhance future Risk Aware iterations.

Social Worker Integrated Care Competencies Scale (SWICCS): Assessing social worker clinical competencies for health care settings

ABSTRACTIntegrating physical and behavioral health services has the potential to reduce health disparities and service inequities among persons most at risk. However, clinical social workers in integrated health settings must possess relevant knowledge and skills to provide quality care to diverse populations. The Social Worker Integrated Care Competency Scale (SWICCS), developed to complement the Integrated and Culturally Relevant Care (ICRC) field education curriculum, measures students’ self-perceptions of knowledge and skills associated with providing behavioral health care. Three student cohorts (n = 38) completed the SWICCS three times during an integrated care field practicum. Results indicated a statistically significant increase in student knowledge and skills at each time point, with a large effect size (r = −.87). The SWICCS demonstrated utility in measuring and tracking social work student acquisition of knowledge and skills required for practice in integrated care environments.

The Impact of Speedometry on Student Knowledge, Interest, and Emotions

ABSTRACTGiven the dearth of high-quality curriculum materials aligned with the new standards (NGSS and CCSS) and low student persistence in STEM fields, we sought to develop and test a STEM curriculum that would improve student knowledge, interest, and emotions. A cluster randomized control trial was conducted to assess the impact of Speedometry, a two-unit STEM curriculum that uses familiar toy cars to explore math and science concepts. A total of 1,615 fourth-grade students across 48 classrooms and 17 schools in an urban district participated in the study. Using a 3-level multilevel model (students nested within teachers and schools) and controls for student and teacher characteristics, we found that Speedometry led to significant increases in student knowledge and positive emotions such as excitement. Speedometry also led to significant decreases in negative emotions such as boredom, frustration, and confusion. The curriculum was implemented with high fidelity as evidenced by classroom observations and teacher self-reports.

The Brewsters

One of the barriers to interprofessional ethics education is a lack of resources that actively engage students in reflection on living an ethical professional life. This project implemented and evaluated an innovative resource for interprofessional ethics education. The objective of this project was to create and evaluate an interprofessional learning activity on professionalism, clinical ethics, and research ethics. The Brewsters is a choose-your-own-adventure novel that addresses professionalism, clinical ethics, and research ethics. For the pilot of the book, a pre-test/post-test design was used. Once implemented across campus, a post-test was used to evaluate student learning in addition to a student satisfaction survey. A total of 755 students in six academic schools in a health science center completed the activity as part of orientation or in coursework. The project was approved as exempt by the university's Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects. The pilot study with 112 students demonstrated a significant increase in student knowledge. The 755 students who participated in the project had relatively high knowledge scores on the post-test and evaluated the activity positively. Students who read The Brewsters scored well on the post-test and had the highest scores on clinical ethics. Clinical ethics scores may indicate issues encountered in mass media. The Brewsters is an innovative resource for teaching interprofessional ethics and professionalism. Further work is needed to determine whether actual and long-term behavior is affected by the activity.

Using Experiential Learning and OSCEs to Teach and Assess Tobacco Dependence Education with First‐Year Dental Students

Previous research has indicated that dentists do not routinely engage in tobacco cessation interventions with their patients due, in part, to a lack of training in the predoctoral curriculum. From 2010 to 2012, this study at one U.S. dental school evaluated the effectiveness of experiential learning and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) to improve first-year dental students' knowledge and beliefs about tobacco dependence and cessation interventions. Analysis indicated acceptable reliability and student performance for the OSCE. In all three years, there were statistically significant increases in student knowledge (p<0.001). In each year, there were also statistically significant shifts in student perceptions of preparedness (p<0.001 to p=0.034) and willingness (p<0.001 to p=0.005) to provide tobacco dependence treatment to patients. Results suggest that OSCEs utilizing standardized patients may be an effective method for assessing tobacco dependence education. Preparing for and participating in an OSCE with a standardized patient may help increase student knowledge and shape the beliefs of early dental students about engaging in patient tobacco cessation interventions. Findings were mixed on the impact of experiential learning on OSCE performance, suggesting further research is needed.

Understanding Implementation and Effectiveness of Strong Start K-2 on Social-Emotional Behavior

Strong Start K-2 is a social-emotional learning curriculum, designed for use with children in kindergarten through grade 2. The objectives of this study were twofold. First, authors aimed to evaluate the feasibility and quality of Strong Start implementation. Additionally authors examined the effect of Strong Start on first grade students’ perceptions of emotion and teacher ratings of social behavior and affect. Results suggested that Strong Start was implemented with integrity, and that significant increases in student knowledge about emotion situations and significant decreases in student internalizing behaviors were associated with exposure to the program. Limitations of this study as well as directions for future research are discussed.

A Culturally Appropriate School Wellness Initiative: Results of a 2-Year Pilot Intervention in 2 Jewish Schools

Despite the growing number of school-based interventions designed to reduce childhood obesity or otherwise promote health, no models or materials were found for Jewish schools. The current study describes an effort within a Jewish school system in Chicago to create, implement, and evaluate a school-based intervention tailored to the unique characteristics of Jewish religion, culture, and school structures. Two schools (with approximately 600 students) were selected for the 2-year pilot study. The schools were required to form a wellness council, write a wellness policy, and implement policy changes or activities in 5 target areas (health education, physical education, school environment, family involvement, and staff wellness). Objectives were measured using pre- and postintervention surveys for students, as well as the School Health Index and other tools. Findings showed several significant increases in student knowledge, as well as an increase in the percentage of older students regularly meeting physical activity guidelines. Few changes in attitudes, other behaviors, or environmental factors were seen. Due to a strong partnership between researchers, schools, and community organizations, meaningful changes were made within the pilot schools. These changes were reflected in a limited number of improvements in student knowledge and activity levels. Future work is needed to determine how to bring about behavioral changes, how to increase the sustainability of all of the changes, and how to disseminate the model and products of this intervention to other day schools.

The Use of a Simulated Nursing Practice Lab in a Distance Practical Nursing Program

Background This study was designed to provide simulated clinical scenarios for practical nursing students in a distance education program. Method This mixed methods pre–post test experimental design study used a nonprobability convenience sample of 33 students. Results Participation in simulation scenarios resulted in a statistically significant increase in student knowledge. Students also revealed an increased sense of connectedness and self-confidence. Conclusion The project proved to be an effective strategy for teaching nursing in a distance learning program.

Knowledge, attitudes, and confidence levels of dental hygiene students regarding teledentistry: A pilot study

Teledentistry provides a viable option for dental professionals to increase care in underserved areas. Dental hygiene students at a state university completed a course in teledentistry that includes performing oral health screenings on children using intraoral cameras and electronic submission of dental images to an off-site dentist for diagnosis. Purpose: The objectives of this study were to examine student knowledge, attitudes, and confidence levels before and after completion of a course on teledentistry. Method: A 5-point Likert scale survey consisting of 10 items was administered to students ages twenty-two to twenty-five (N=24) in a teledentistry course the first and last day of class. The survey included current knowledge of teledentistry, attitudes regarding effectiveness of teledentistry, and confidence in acquiring the necessary technical skills. Results: Survey results were analyzed using a matched-pairs t-test and Wilcoxon signed-rank test. There were significant increase in student knowledge, attitudes, and confidence in 9 of the 10 questions (p&lt;.01). Conclusion: This study indicates that student attitudes were positively changed in their knowledge of the effectiveness of teledentistry in identifying dental needs in underserved areas, the role dental hygienists play in access to care, and confidence in acquiring and submitting dental images. These findings, in conjunction with research by other investigators, support continued implementation of teledentistry in dental hygiene education.

The Impact of an HIV and AIDS Life Skills Program on Secondary School Students in KwaZulu–Natal, South Africa

The evaluation of the Department of Educations' life skills program on HIV and AIDS prevention among Grade 9 students in 22 randomly allocated schools in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, showed only a significant increase in student knowledge about HIV/AIDS in the intervention group compared with the control group. No effects were found on safe sex practices (condom use, sexual intercourse) or on measures of psychosocial determinants of these practices (attitude and self-efficacy). A process evaluation among the teachers showed that some implemented the program fully (seven schools) and some partially (four schools). An exploratory analysis showed that students who received the full intervention were more positive in their perceptions about sexual behavior and social connectedness (at 10-month follow-up) and reported less sex and more condom use (at 6-month follow-up) than students in the partial and control groups. These limited effects therefore call for further analysis of the content and implementation strategies used in the classroom.

A Healthy Lifestyle Program: Promoting Child Health in Schools

The problem of overweight children is an increasing public health concern in the United States. Many children today consume diets that are high in fat, lack regular physical activity, and receive minimal amounts of nutrition education at school. School-based education about nutrition and healthy lifestyles provides an opportunity for intervention with all children. A program for 4th- and 5th-grade students was designed to increase the student’s knowledge about nutrition and healthy lifestyles. After implementation of the program, there was a significant increase in student knowledge of nutrition and healthy lifestyles as determined by a pretest and posttest evaluation. The results have implications for school nurses because childhood behaviors have such a profound impact on future adult lifestyle choices.

Can computer technology affect teenage attitudes towards AIDS?

&lt;span&gt;Over the past five years the issue of AIDS has been a major concern for health education professionals and an examination of the literature suggests there have been a variety of initiatives undertaken. Gruen et al (1991) have demonstrated significant increases in student knowledge through the involvement of medical and professional personnel in the establishment of a school based AIDS teaching unit. Walker et al (1991) have utilised AIDS data in statistical computing courses as a means of more up to date data to students, while Lipson and Brown (1991) have reported some modest 'success' utilising video tapes.&lt;/span&gt;

Teaching human sexuality in junior high school: an interdisciplinary approach.

A pilot educational program in human sexuality designed for junior high age adolescents was conducted jointly by the St. Paul, Minnesota Maternal and Infant Care Project and the St. Paul Public Schools. This program encompassed two courses which presented a comprehensive view of young men and women as sexual beings. The goal was to affect primary prevention of adolescent pregnancy and other problems related to adolescent sexuality. Pre- and posttest scores demonstrated a statistically significant increase in student knowledge, and weekly evaluations revealed consistent interest in subject matter presented.
