Allylic Epoxides Increase the Strain Energy of Cyclic Olefin Monomers for Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization.

Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) is an effective method for synthesizing functional polymers, but since the technique typically relies on high ring strain cyclic olefins, the most common monomers are norbornene derivatives. The reliance on one class of monomer limits the obtainable properties of ROMP polymers. In this work, we investigate new bicyclic monomers synthesized via epoxidation of commercial dienes. DFT estimates of these monomers' ring strains suggests a significant increase in strain for cyclic olefins containing allylic epoxides. We found that the eight-membered (3,4-COO) and five-membered (CPO) cyclic olefins were particularly effective for ROMP. CPO was of especially intriguing due to its excellent polymerizability when compared to the limited reactivity of other five-membered rings. Unlike polynorbornenes, the resulting polymers of both monomers displayed glass transition temperatures well below room temperature. Interestingly, poly(3,4-COO) showed both high stereo- and regioregularity while poly(CPO) showed little regularity. Both polymers could be readily modified via post-polymerization ring-opening of the reactive allylic epoxides. With a high epoxide density in poly(CPO), CPO is an exciting new ROMP monomer that is easily synthesized, can be polymerized to high conversion at room temperature, and may be facilely modified to yield a wide range of functional materials.

In vivo measurement of strain in the periodontal space of pig (Sus scrofa) incisors using in-fiber Bragg sensors.

The incisor teeth in pigs, Sus scrofa, function in association with a disc-shaped snout to explore the environment for potential food. Understanding how mechanical loading applied to the tooth deforms the periodontal ligament (PDL) is important to determining the role of periodontal mechanoreceptors during food exploration and feeding. The objective of this study was to use fiber Bragg (FBG) sensors to measure strain in vivo within the PDL space of pig incisors. The central mandibular incisors of pigs underwent spring loaded lingual tipping during FBG strain recording within the labial periodontal space. FBG sensors were placed within the periodontal space of the central mandibular incisors of ~2-3-month-old farm pigs. The magnitude and orientation of spring loads are expected to mimic incisor contact with food. During incisor tipping with load calibrated springs, FBG strains in vitro (N = 6) and in vivo (N = 6) recorded at comparable load levels overlapped in range (-10-20 με). Linear regressions between peak FBG strains, that is, the highest recorded strain value, and baseline strains, that is, strain without applied spring load, were significant across all in vivo experiments (peak strain at 200 g vs. baseline, p = .04; peak strain at 2000 g vs. baseline p = .03; peak strain at 2000 g vs. 200 g, p = .004). These linear relationships indicate that on a per experiment basis, the maximum measured strain at different spring loads showed predictable differences. A Friedman test of the absolute value of peak strain confirmed the significant increase in strain between baseline, 200 g, and 2000 g spring activation (p = .02). Mainly compressive strains were recorded in the labial PDL space and increases in spring load applied in vivo generated increases in FBG strain measurements. These results demonstrate the capacity for FBG sensors to be used in vivo to assess transmission of occlusal loads through the periodontium. PDL strain is associated with mechanoreceptor stimulation and is expected to affect the functional morphology of the incisors. The overall low levels of strain observed may correspond with the robust functional morphology of pig incisors and the tendency for pigs to encounter diverse foods and substrates during food exploration.

Effect of Sulfate Attack on the Expansion Behavior of Cement-Treated Aggregates.

The expansion induced by sulfate attack on cement-treated aggregates (SACA) is a well-known problem that can be solved. It causes obvious heaves in road bases and railway subgrades. In this paper, the effects of the sodium sulfate content, cement content, degree of compaction, sulfate types, attack types, aluminum ion supply, concentration of curing sulfate solution, and temperature on the expansion behavior induced by SACA were investigated over 60 days in the laboratory. Based on the Sobol sensitivity analysis method, the influence of the sensitivity of each factor on the expansion was quantitatively analyzed, and the dominant factor of expansion was proposed. Results show that sulfate content is the domain factor of expansion that is induced by SACA, and it presents a logarithmic function relationship with strain. The 0.5% sodium sulfate content is the minimum sulfate content which causes the expansion that is induced by SACA. When the sulfate content is less than 1%, the expansion induced by SACA is minor. When the sulfate content is between 1% and 3%, the expansion behavior is expressed in four stages as follows: rapid strain increase, followed by a short stagnation period, then a significant strain increase and, finally, constant strain. When the sulfate content is greater than 5%, there are two stages comprising the expansion behavior as follows: the rapid strain increases and constant strain occurs. Greater sulfate content, greater degree of compaction, and lower temperature have positive effects on the expansion induced by SACA. The cement content does not have a consistent effect on expansion behavior. Compared with a sodium sulfate attack, both the reaction rate and expansion of cement-treated aggregates that are attacked by gypsum are smaller, and the attack period is also longer. When the sulfate content is greater than 1%, the addition of kaolin promotes the progression of the expansion induced by SACA. A small amount of water is sufficient for the demand for the sulfate attack. When the sulfate content is at a certain level, the expansion induced by SACA that is under external attack is much smaller than the expansion that is under internal attack. This study is expected to serve as a reference for future research on the mechanics of SACA, and it attempts to provide theoretical support for amending expansions that are induced by SACA.

Fast grip force adaptation to friction relies on localized fingerpad strains.

During object manipulation, humans adjust the grip force to friction, such that slippery objects are squeezed more firmly than sticky ones. This essential mechanism to keep a stable grasp relies on feedback from tactile afferents innervating the fingertips, that are sensitive to local skin strains. To test if this feedback originates from the skin-object interface, we asked participants to perform a grip-lift task with an instrumented object able to monitor skin strains at the contact through transparent plates of different frictions. We observed that, following an unbeknown change in plate across trials, participants adapted their grip force to friction. After switching from high to low friction, we found a significant increase in strain inside the contact arising ~100 ms before the modulation of grip force, suggesting that differences in strain patterns before lift-off are used by the nervous system to quickly adjust the force to the frictional properties of manipulated objects.

Mechanical Properties of PLA/PCL Blends Compatibilized with PEG‐b‐PCL Multiblock Copolymer

AbstractAmong the various kinds of copolymers that can be used as compatibilizers in poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) blends, copolymers containing segments of ε‐caprolactone and ethylene glycol (PEG) are an interesting choice because they are also biodegradable and biocompatible. A multiblock copolymer containing PEG and PCL segments, synthesized via one‐step bulk polycondensation, is added into PLA/PCL blend (80/20 wt%) at 1 and 5 wt% from the molten state, using a twin‐screw extruder. The effect of the PEG‐b‐PCL copolymer on the mechanical properties of PLA/PCL blends is investigated by tensile and Izod impact tests. The mixing of PCL with PLA does not promote adequate matrix toughness due to the incompatibility between the phases. The addition of only 1 wt% of the multiblock copolymer little changes the mechanical behavior of the blend. Only the compatibilized PLA/PCL blend with 5 wt% of the multiblock copolymer exhibits a significant increase in strain at break and notches Izod impact resistance in comparison with uncompatibilized PLA/PCL blends or neat PLA. Therefore, the addition of the PEG‐b‐PCL multiblock copolymer results in a marked change in the mechanical behavior, from brittle to ductile at room temperature, and confirms its compatibilization potential for the PLA/PCL immiscible blends.

A cadaveric study of ulnar nerve strain at the elbow associated with cubitus valgus/varus deformity

BackgroundCubital tunnel syndrome can be caused by overtraction and dynamic compression in elbow deformities. The extent to which elbow deformities contribute to ulnar nerve strain is unknown. Here, we investigated ulnar nerve strain caused by cubitus valgus/varus deformity using fresh-frozen cadavers.MethodsWe used six fresh-frozen cadaver upper extremities. A strain gauge was placed on the ulnar nerve 2 cm proximal to the medial epicondyle of the humerus. For the elbow deformity model, osteotomy was performed at the distal humerus, and plate fixation was performed to create cubitus valgus/varus deformities (10°, 20°, and 30°). Ulnar nerve strain caused by elbow flexion (0–125°) was measured in both the normal and deformity models. The strains at different elbow flexion angles within each model were compared, and the strains at elbow extension and at maximum elbow flexion were compared between the normal model and each elbow deformity model. However, in the cubitus varus model, the ulnar nerve deflected more than the measurable range of the strain gauge; elbow flexion of 60° or more were considered effective values. Statistical analysis of the strain values was performed with Friedman test, followed by the Williams’ test (the Shirley‒Williams’ test for non-parametric analysis).ResultsIn all models, ulnar nerve strain increased significantly from elbow extension to maximal flexion (control: 13.2%; cubitus valgus 10°: 13.6%; cubitus valgus 20°: 13.5%; cubitus valgus 30°: 12.2%; cubitus varus 10°: 8.3%; cubitus varus 20°: 8.2%; cubitus varus 30°: 6.3%, P < 0.001). The control and cubitus valgus models had similar values, but the cubitus varus models revealed that this deformity caused ulnar nerve relaxation.ConclusionsUlnar nerve strain significantly increased during elbow flexion. No significant increase in strain 2 cm proximal to the medial epicondyle was observed in the cubitus valgus model. Major changes may have been observed in the measurement behind the medial epicondyle. In the cubitus varus model, the ulnar nerve was relaxed during elbow extension, but this effect was reduced by elbow flexion.

Effect of the spin‐line temperature profile on the mechanical properties of melt electrospun polyethylene fibers

AbstractThe covid‐19 pandemic has revealed the need for alternative production approaches with low startup costs like electrospinning for filter needs, the most imperative element of the personal protective equipment (PPE). Current attempts in advancing melt electrospinning deal with developing strategies for fiber diameter attenuation toward sub‐micron scale. Here, the attunement in the spinning‐zone temperature known as ''spin‐line temperature profile'' was utilized as a baseline for fiber diameter reduction. The mechanical performance of the melt‐electrospun linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) fibers is reported to characterize their structural transformation with respect to various spin‐line temperature profiles. With an increase in the spin‐line temperature to above 100°C in the area of cone formation, an increased tensile and yield strength along with fiber diameter reduction by four‐folds was demonstrated. A significant increase in toughness, by almost three times, without compromising the stiffness and Young's modulus was observed. The dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that spinning in high temperatures produces changes in the alpha (α) relaxation, contributing to the significant increase in strain at break. These results are significant because polyolefin fibers are an imperative element of medical textiles and PPE. Therefore, developing a correlation for process‐structure‐properties for emerging production techniques like melt electrospinning becomes critical.

Forces at the Anterior Meniscus Attachments Strongly Increase Under Dynamic Knee Joint Loading

Background: The anatomic appearance and biomechanical and clinical importance of the anterior meniscus roots are well described. However, little is known about the loads that act on these attachment structures under physiological joint loads and movements. Hypotheses: As compared with uniaxial loading conditions under static knee flexion angles or at very low flexion-extension speeds, more realistic continuous movement simulations in combination with physiological muscle force simulations lead to significantly higher anterior meniscus attachment forces. This increase is even more pronounced in combination with a longitudinal meniscal tear or after total medial meniscectomy. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: A validated Oxford Rig–like knee simulator was used to perform a slow squat, a fast squat, and jump landing maneuvers on 9 cadaveric human knee joints, with and without muscle force simulation. The strains in the anterior medial and lateral meniscal periphery and the respective attachments were determined in 3 states: intact meniscus, medial longitudinal tear, and total medial meniscectomy. To determine the attachment forces, a subsequent in situ tensile test was performed. Results: Muscle force simulation resulted in a significant strain increase at the anterior meniscus attachments of up to 308% (P < .038) and the anterior meniscal periphery of up to 276%. This corresponded to significantly increased forces (P < .038) acting in the anteromedial attachment with a maximum force of 140 N, as determined during the jump landing simulation. Meniscus attachment strains and forces were significantly influenced (P = .008) by the longitudinal tear and meniscectomy during the drop jump simulation. Conclusion: Medial and lateral anterior meniscus attachment strains and forces were significantly increased with physiological muscle force simulation, corroborating our hypothesis. Therefore, in vitro tests applying uniaxial loads combined with static knee flexion angles or very low flexion-extension speeds appear to underestimate meniscus attachment forces. Clinical Relevance: The data of the present study might help to optimize the anchoring of meniscal allografts and artificial meniscal substitutes to the tibial plateau. Furthermore, this is the first in vitro study to indicate reasonable minimum stability requirements regarding the reattachment of torn anterior meniscus roots.

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty glenoid lateralization influences scapular spine strains.

Scapular spine insufficiency fractures following reverse shoulder arthroplasty are poorly understood. There exists limited literature regarding the role of reverse shoulder arthroplasty lateralization on scapular spine strains and fractures. The purpose of this cadaveric biomechanical simulator study was to evaluate the role of glenoid lateralization on scapular spine strain. Eight cadaveric shoulders were tested using an in-vitro simulator. A custom modular reverse shoulder arthroplasty was implanted that allowed for in-situ glenoid lateralization adjustment. Scapular spine strain was measured by strain gauges placed in clinically relevant Levy zones along the scapular spine. All specimens were tested in loaded forward elevation and abduction. Glenoid lateralization from 0 to 5 mm caused negligible changes in scapular spine strains. Lateralization from 5 to 10 mm, however, caused significant increases in strain at 0° forward elevation in all strain gauges (p < 0.026). Strains measured in Levy zone 2 were significantly higher than all other locations (p < 0.039). Additionally, forward elevation resulted in significantly higher strain values than abduction (p = 0.001). Glenoid lateralization is an important parameter in reverse shoulder arthroplasty; however, our results demonstrate higher degrees of lateralization may place higher strains on the scapular spine. An understanding of reverse shoulder arthroplasty lateralization and scapular spine strains is important to optimize parameters and to mitigate negative effects. The effect of print speed and material aging on the mechanical properties of a self-healing nanocomposite hydrogel

A UV-curable nanoclay-zwitterionic hydrogel is synthesised and evaluated though rheological and mechanical testing. The results show that aging time of the pre-gel has a big impact on storage and loss of modulus which both increases with increasing aging time, particularly in the first 48 h. The pre-gel is successfully printed and is shown to be able to support itself making it possible to fully print structures before curing. Compression and tensile samples are printed and compared to cast samples. The pre-gel aging time showed that an increased time resulted in a lower strain at failure for both cast and extruded samples. However, when printing with a speed of 10 mm/s with UV-curing during printing, a significant increase in strain at failure is achieved. Furthermore, the compressed samples display self-healing abilities at room temperature and almost completely returns to its original state before compression occurred.

Biomechanical Evaluation of Knotless and Knotted All-Suture Anchor Repair Constructs in 4 Bankart Repair Configurations

To evaluate the biomechanical performance of Bankart repair using 1.8-mm knotless all-suture anchors in comparison to 1.8-mm knotted all-suture anchors with both simple and horizontal mattress stitch configurations. Thirty fresh-frozen human cadaveric shoulders were dissected to the capsule, leaving the glenoid and humeral capsular insertions intact. A standardized anteroinferior labral tear was created and repaired using 3 anchors. A 2× 2 factorial design was implemented, with 6 matched pairs randomized between knotless and knotted anchor repairs and 6 matched pairs randomized into simple and horizontal mattress stitch configurations. In addition, 6 unpaired shoulders were used to evaluate the native capsulolabral state. First failure load, ultimate load, and stiffness were assessed. Linear mixed-effects modeling was used to compare endpoints. Digital image correlation was used to evaluate capsular strain throughout testing. Failure modes were reported qualitatively. The knotless all-suture anchor repair showed similar biomechanical strength to the knotted all-suture anchors for first failure load (coefficient, 142 N; 95% confidence interval [CI], -30 to 314 N; P= .12), ultimate load (coefficient, 11.1 N; 95% CI, -104.9 to 127.2 N; P= .847), and stiffness (coefficient, 3.4 N/mm2; 95% CI, -14.1 to 20.9 N/mm2; P= .697) when stitch configuration was held constant. No statistically significant differences were found on comparison of simple and mattress stitch configurations for first failure load (coefficient, -31 N; 95% CI, -205 to 143 N; P= .720), ultimate load (coefficient, 112 N; 95% CI, -321 to 97 N; P=.291), and stiffness (coefficient, -9.6 N/mm2; 95% CI, -27.3 to 8.1 N/mm2; P= .284) when anchor type was held constant. Specimens with knotless anchors and simple stitch techniques resulted in lower stiffness compared with the native state (P= .030). The knotless-mattress configuration resulted in significantly lower strain than the knotted-mattress (P= .037) and knotless-simple (P= .019) configurations and was the only configuration that did not result in a significant increase in strain compared with the intact specimens (P= .216). Fewer instances of suture slippage (loss of loop security) were observed with knotless anchors versus knotted anchors (11% vs 30%), and less soft-tissue failure was observed with the mattress stitch configuration versus the simple stitch configuration (36% vs 47%). Knotless and knotted all-suture anchor repairs with simple and mattress stitch configurations showed similar values of ultimate load, first failure load, and stiffness. However, the horizontal mattress stitch configuration proved to decrease capsular strain more similarly to the native state compared with the simple stitch configuration. Ultimate load and first failure load for all repairs were similar to those of the native state. Knotless all-suture anchors have a smaller diameter than solid anchors, can be inserted through curved guides, and preserve glenoid bone stock. This study presents knotless, tensionable all-suture anchor repair for labral tears that displays high biomechanical fixation strength, similar to the native capsulolabral state.

Frontal Plane Loading Characteristics of Medial Collateral Ligament Strain Concurrent With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Failure

Background: Both the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the medial collateral ligament (MCL) bear load during athletic tasks of landing, cutting, pivoting, and twisting. As dynamic knee valgus is a purported mechanism for ACL injury, the MCL should bear significant strain load with valgus force. Hypothesis: The intact MCL will demonstrate a significant increase in strain upon failure of the ACL at 25° of knee flexion. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: In vivo kinetics/kinematics of 44 healthy athletic participants were measured to determine stratification of injury risk (ie, low, medium, and high) in 3 degrees of knee forces/moments (knee abduction moment, anterior tibial shear, and internal tibial rotation). These stratified kinetic values were input into a cadaveric impact simulator to assess ligamentous strain during a simulated landing task. Uniaxial and multiaxial load cells and differential variable reluctance transducer strain sensors were utilized to collect mechanical data for analysis. Conditions of external loads applied to the cadaveric limbs were varied and randomized. Results: ACL strain increased with increased dynamic knee abduction moment (χ2[5] = 14.123, P = .0148). The most extreme dynamic knee abduction moment condition demonstrated significantly higher ACL strain compared with lower loaded trials (P≤ .0203). Similarly, MCL strain increased with dynamic knee abduction moment (χ2[5] = 36.578, P < .0001). Matched-pairs analysis compared ACL strain with MCL strain (maximum ACL strain – maximum MCL strain) and demonstrated high strain for the ACL versus the MCL (S177 = 6223.5, P < .0001). Conclusion: Although significant, MCL strain had minimal increase with increased dynamic knee abduction moment, and the event of ACL failure did not significantly increase MCL strain when compared with high dynamic knee abduction moment conditions in the cadaveric model. The ACL bears more strain than the MCL at increasing amounts of dynamic knee abduction moment at 25° of knee flexion, which may explain the limited concomitant MCL injury rate that can occur during a dynamic valgus collapse of the knee. Clinical Relevance: These characteristics of ACL and MCL strain are important to understand the mechanisms that drive these injuries at the knee and will improve rehabilitation and injury prevention techniques.

Biomechanical analysis of metacarpophalangeal joint arthroplasty with metal-polyethylene implant: An in-vitro study

BackgroundThe most common implant options for the metacarpophalangeal joint arthroplasty include silicone, pyrocarbon and metal-polyethylene. A systematic review of outcomes of silicone and pyrocarbon implants was conducted; however, a similar exercise for metal-polyethylene implants revealed a scarcity of published results and lack of long-term follow-up studies. The aim of the present work is to test the hypothesis that the magnitude of metacarpophalangeal joint cyclic loads generates stress and strain behaviour, which leads to long-term reduced risk of metal-polyethylene component loosening. MethodsThis study was performed using synthetic metacarpals and proximal phalanges to experimentally predict the cortex strain behaviour for both intact and implanted states. Finite element models were developed to assess the structural behaviour of cancellous-bone and metal-polyethylene components; these models were validated by comparing cortex strains predictions against the measurements. FindingsCortex strains in the implanted metacarpophalangeal joint presented a significant reduction in relation to the intact joint; the exception was the dorsal side of the phalanx, which presents a significant strain increase. Cancellous-bone at proximal dorsal region of phalanx reveals a three to fourfold strain increase as compared to the intact condition.InterpretationThe use of metal-polyethylene implant changes the strain behaviour of the metacarpophalangeal joint yielding the risk of cancellous-bone fatigue failure due to overload in proximal phalanx; this risk is more important than the risk of bone-resorption due to the strain-shielding effect. By limiting the loads magnitude over the joint after arthroplasty, it may contribute to the prevention of implant loosening.

Release of the medial collateral ligament is mandatory in medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy.

The purpose of this study was to quantify the effect of clinically relevant open-wedge high tibial osteotomies on medial collateral ligament (MCL) strain and the resultant tibiofemoral contact mechanics during knee extension and 30° knee flexion. Six human cadaveric knee joints were axially loaded (1kN) in knee extension and 30° knee flexion. Strains at the anterior and posterior regions of the MCL were determined using strain gauges. Tibiofemoral contact mechanics (contact area, mean and maximum contact pressure) were investigated using pressure-sensitive sensors. Open-wedge osteotomy was performed using biplanar cuts and osteotomy angles of 5° and 10° were maintained using an external fixator. Tests were performed first with intact and then with dissected MCL. Nonparametric statistical analyses indicated a significant strain increase (p < 0.01) in the anterior and posterior fibres of the MCL with increasing osteotomy angle of up to 8.3% and 6.0%, respectively. Only after releasing the MCL the desired lateralisation of the mechanical axis was achieved, indicating a significant decrease in the maximum contact pressure in knee extension of - 25% (p = 0.028) and 30° knee flexion of - 21% (p = 0.027). The results of the present biomechanical study suggest, that an open-wedge high tibial osteotomy is most effective in reducing the medial contact pressure when spreading the osteotomy to 10° and concomitantly releasing the MCL. To transfer the results of this biomechanical study to the clinical day-to-day practice, it is necessary to factor in the individual ligamentous laxity of each patient into the treatment options e.g. particularly for patients with distinct knee ligament laxity or medial ligamentary instability, the release of the MCL should be performed with care. A PDE-constrained optimization approach for topology optimization of strained photonic devices

Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of using tensile-strained, doped Germanium as a means of developing an integrated light source for (amongst other things) future microprocessors. In this work, a multi-material phase-field approach to determine the optimal material configuration within a so-called Germanium-on-Silicon microbridge is considered. Here, an “optimal” configuration is one in which the strain in a predetermined minimal optical cavity within the Germanium is maximized according to an appropriately chosen objective functional. Due to manufacturing requirements, the emphasis here is on the cross-section of the device; i.e. a so-called aperture design. Here, the optimization is modeled as a non-linear optimization problem with partial differential equation and manufacturing constraints. The resulting problem is analyzed and solved numerically. The theory portion includes a proof of existence of an optimal topology, differential sensitivity analysis of the displacement with respect to the topology, and the derivation of first- and second-order optimality conditions. For the numerical experiments, an array of first- and second-order solution algorithms in function-space are adapted to the current setting, tested, and compared. The numerical examples yield designs for which a significant increase in strain (as compared to an intuitive empirical design) is observed.

Effect of wrist and finger flexion in relation to strain on the tendon origin of the extensor carpi radialis brevis: A cadaveric study simulating stretching exercises

BackgroundStretching exercises based on wrist flexion-ulnar deviation with elbow extension, forearm pronation, and additional index or middle finger flexion have been used to stretch the wrist extensors for lateral epicondylitis. The purpose of this study was to quantify the strain on the tendon origin of the extensor carpi radialis brevis in cadaver specimens during these stretching exercises. MethodsWe used 8 fresh frozen/thawed cadaveric upper extremities. The strain on the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon origin was measured by the addition of 4 types of traction (no traction, wrist flexion-ulnar deviation, and index or middle finger flexion in combination with wrist flexion-ulnar deviation) in 7 sequential elbow flexion angles during forearm pronation. Two types of varus stress load to the elbow (none, gravity on the forearm) were also applied. FindingsA significant increase in strain was obtained by wrist traction with 0°, 15° and 30° of elbow flexion (P<0.05). The strain was also significantly increased by adding finger traction (P<0.05) and varus stress load (P<0.05). A maximum strain value of 5.30 (SD 1.73) % was obtained when traction on the middle finger in combination with traction of the wrist was added at 15° elbow flexion with varus stress load. InterpretationThe present study provides data about the amount of strain on the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon during stretching exercises of the wrist and finger extensors. The results of this study could be applied to stretching exercises for patients with lateral epicondylitis.

Experimental study on the compression of concrete filled steel tubular latticed columns with variable cross section

The effects of slenderness ratio, eccentricity and column slope on the load-carrying capacities and failure modes of variable and uniform concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) latticed columns under axial and eccentric compression were investigated and compared in this study. The results clearly show that all the CFST latticed columns with variable cross section exhibit an overall failure, which is similar to that of CFST latticed columns with a uniform cross section. The load-carrying capacity decreases with the increase of the slenderness ratio or the eccentricity. For 2-m specimens with a slenderness ratio of 9, the ultimate load-carrying capacity is increased by 3% and 5% for variable CFST latticed columns with a slope of 1:40 and 1:20 as compared with that of uniform CFST latticed columns, respectively. For the eccentrically compressed variable CFST latticed columns, the strain of the columns at the loading side, as well as the difference in the strain, increases from the bottom to the cap, and a more significant increase in strain is observed in the cross section closer to the column cap.

Development of Bioresorbable Hydrophilic–Hydrophobic Electrospun Scaffolds for Neural Tissue Engineering

In this study, electrospun fiber scaffolds based on biodegradable and bioabsorbable polymers and showing a similar structure to that of the extracellular matrix (ECM) present in the neural tissues were prepared. The effects of electrospun-based scaffolds processed from poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(lactide-b-ethylene glycol-b-lactide) block copolymer (PELA) and PLA/polyethylene glycol (PEG) (50:50 by wt) blends on the morphology, wettability, and mechanical properties, as well as on neural stem cell (NSC) behavior, were investigated. Thus, PLA/PELA and PLA/PEG fiber mats composed of PEG with different chain lengths were evaluated for optimal use as tissue engineering scaffolds. In both cases, the hydrophilic character of the scaffold surface was increased from the introduction of PEG homopolymer or PEG-based block copolymer compared with neat PLA. A microphase separation and a surface erosion of PLA/PEG blend-based electrospun fibers were highlighted, whereas PLA/PELA blend-based fibers displayed a moderate hydrophilic surface and a tunable balance between surface erosion and bulk degradation. Even if the mechanical properties of PLA fibers containing PEG or PELA decreased slightly, an excellent compromise between stiffness and the ability to sustain large deformation was found for PLA/PELA(2k), which displayed a significant increase in strain at break, that is, up to 500%. Our results suggest that both neat PLA and PLA/PELA blends supplemented with growth factors may mimic neural-like constructs and provide structural stability. Nonetheless, electrospun PLA/PELA blends have a suitable surface property, which may act synergistically in the modulation of biopotential for implantable scaffolding in neural tissue engineering.

Lightweight micro-cellular plastics from polylactide/polyolefin hybrids

Abstract Semi-crystalline polylactide (PLA)/polyolefin multi-component blends were used as precursors for the generation of a new class of micro-cellular polymers. Either a polypropylene-based elastomer (PBE) or polypropylene (PP) homopolymer were utilized as dispersed phases at the 10 wt% level. An epoxy-functionalized terpolymer (PEGMMA) was introduced (1 wt%) as a reactive compatibilizer to reduce the dispersed phase droplet size and provide sufficient adhesion between the matrix and dispersed phase. In addition, a polyalkylene glycol liquid (PAG) was added to the blend (4 wt%) to serve as a PLA plasticizer and interfacial modifier. The multicomponent blends exhibited significant increases in strain at break as compared to neat PLA and were subjected to a range of uniaxial strains (10–90%) at room temperature. These cold drawn materials exhibited nearly constant cross-sectional area and fine micro-cellular structures, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. Distinct different voiding mechanisms observed for the PBE- and PP-containing blends were ascribed to the differences in the dispersed phase elastic moduli and deformability. The material density of cold drawn blends was reduced by up to 34% when compared to the precursor blends without a noticeable change in cross-sectional area. The novel low-density microcellular PLA blends demonstrated outstanding mechanical properties such as high strength, high modulus, substantial ductility, and a 14-fold increase in impact resistance as compared to PLA homopolymer.
