Physical activity among children and adolescents: recommendation compliance according to sex and age

Aim: To describe physical activity (PA) patterns among children and adolescents according to sex and age and the accomplishment of PA recommendations. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, with a non-randomized sample of 1,710 children and adolescents, selected from two Portugal databases. The sample was divided into 4 age groups [children (3-5-year-old) and (6-10-year-old); adolescents (11-14-year-old) and (15-18-year-old)]. PA was measured by accelerometry. Two-way analysis of variance ANOVA was carried out to test the main effects of age group, sex, and interactions (age group*sex). Results: Significant age group and sex interaction effects were found in light (L)PA and vigorous (V)PA. Moreover, LPA is higher in adolescents in comparison to children, the inverse occurs in moderate (M)VPA. Preschoolers are engaged in more MVPA, and less LPA compared to other age groups. The proportion of children and adolescents who meet the MVPA and steps number recommendation ranged from 6.0-96.2% and 15.6-87.5%, respectively. Conclusion: Girls spent less time in PA than boys. Children and adolescents, boys and girls have significant differences in their relationship with the PA and their recommendations. Children spent more time in MVPA and less time in LPA than adolescents did, and a higher proportion of boys met the MVPA recommendation than girls.

The effects of a short exercise bout on executive functions in healthy older adults

Regular physical activity is associated with healthier brains and improved cognition among older adults. Yet, the impact of a short bout of exercise on older adults’ cognition still is not fully clarified. The present study explored the effects of 20 min of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (on a cycle ergometer) on cognition. Forty-eight healthy older adults were randomly assigned to an exercise or a control group and completed four cognitive tests: Affective Go/No-Go (AGN), Simple Reaction Time (SRT), Spatial Working Memory (SWM) and a Backward Counting task. Tests were administered prior to and immediately after 20 min of cycling (exercise group) or rest (control group). Mixed-design 2 × 2 ANOVAs indicated a significant interaction of Group x Session, for commission errors on the positive valence of the Affective Go/No-go task, indicating that the exercise group performed better on one aspect of this inhibition test after cycling (p = 0.004), while the control group’s performance declined after rest. A similar pattern was found for the SWM, with the exercise group showing a significantly better performance after the exercise both for total error (p = 0.027) and the strategy (p = 0.002), while no improvement was observed after rest (controls). The study suggests that inhibitory control functions and working memory may be improved by a single relatively short bout of moderate exercise. However, the null effects of exercise on the other cognitive measures indicate that the neurocognitive benefits of acute exercise for older adults may be selectively sensitive to exercise parameters and to specific aspects of cognition.

Implications for fall efficacy strategies on center of pressure and center of gravity sway distances in adults with chronic low back pain

BackgroundAlthough chronic low back pain (LBP) is a complex condition often associated with altered motor control and compensatory postural adjustments, existing literature provides inconsistent reports on the underlying control mechanisms for maintaining balance.PurposeThis study aimed to compare differences in sway distances between the center of pressure (COP) and the center of gravity (COG), while considering limb dominance, in adults with and without LBP.MethodsThere were 26 subjects with LBP and 39 control subjects who performed three repeated unilateral standing tasks on a force platform. Outcome measures included the sway distances between COP and COG in the anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions, as well as the results of the fall efficacy scale (FES).ResultsA significant group interaction was demonstrated on limb dominance and direction for the sway distance (F = 5.46, p = 0.02). Specifically, the third trial in the ML direction while standing on the dominant limb indicated a significant difference in COP-COG sway distance (t = -2.30, p = 0.01). When FES scores were used as a covariate, a significant three-way interaction (dominance x direction x trial) was found (F = 4.06, p = 0.04).ConclusionAlthough no significant group interaction was observed for dominance, direction, and trial, the LBP group demonstrated an ability to leverage fall efficacy following repeated trials to reduce ML balance deficits. Clinicians should consider neuromuscular control and limb dominance when developing fall efficacy strategies for postural adaptations in adults with LBP.

Comparison of short term recovery in patients with midportion Achilles tendinopathy with varying degrees of kinesiophobia treated with the Silbernagel protocol: A prospective single cohort analysis

ObjectiveTo assess short term recovery between individuals with Achilles tendinopathy with varying degrees of kinesiophobia when treated with the Silbernagel protocol. Secondarily to investigate short term change in degree of kinesiophobia. DesignProspective single cohort analysis. SettingUniversity/Clinical. Participants116 participants with midportion Achilles tendinopathy were grouped from their baseline Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK) score: Low (≤33), Medium (34–41), and High (≥42). Main outcome measuresSymptom severity, Achilles tendon structure, and function were assessed at baseline and 8-weeks following initiation of the Silbernagel protocol. Differences in recovery between TSK groups were analyzed. ResultsNo group by time interactions were observed for symptoms, structure, or function. A significant interaction of group by time was observed for TSK score. The Medium (n = 66) and High (n = 28) TSK groups significantly decreased TSK score after 8 weeks by 2.4 and 4.4 points respectively while the Low TSK group (n = 22) did not change. ConclusionThere were no differences in short term recovery of symptoms, Achilles tendon structure, and function in individuals with midportion Achilles tendinopathy treated with the Silbernagel protocol regardless of baseline degree of kinesiophobia. Those with moderate and high levels of kinesiophobia at baseline decreased TSK score in the short term.

Is the Frequency of a Targeted Neuromuscular Training Program a Factor in Modifying Knee Joint Loading During Typical Netball Landing Tasks?

Unplanned sidestep cutting and forward single-leg jump-landing contribute to non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in netball. Neuromuscular training programs (NMTPs) have shown promising results in reducing injury risk in certain populations when compliance is high. Compliance is easier to achieve when NMTPs are effective yet require minimal time for completion. Once- and thrice-weekly intervention groups would be equally effective in reducing knee abduction and internal rotation moments during forward single-leg jump landing and unplanned sidestep cutting. Randomized controlled trial. Level 3. External peak knee abduction and peak knee internal rotation moments during unplanned sidestep cutting and forward single-leg jump-landing were assessed pre- and post-intervention for 17 elite-level female netballers assigned randomly to either a once-weekly or thrice-weekly group. Regular netball training continued throughout the intervention, which lasted 6 weeks (30 minutes/session). One-way analysis of covariance (α = 0.05) was utilized to compare post-intervention peak knee abduction and peak knee internal rotation moments between groups, controlling for pre-intervention knee moments during the forward single-leg jump-landing and unplanned sidestep cut. Paired t tests were used to examine within-group changes in knee moments pre- versus post-intervention. For unplanned sidestep cuts on the right leg, both groups differed significantly, with the once-weekly group displaying a decrease in peak knee internal rotation moments [F(1,14) = 5.23; P = 0.04] whereas the thrice-weekly group did not. No other significant group interactions were found. A condensed NMTP with targeted exercises, performed once-weekly as part of regular training, shows potential to reduce peak knee internal rotation moments that are injurious to the ACL during unplanned sidestep cutting in adult female netballers. A once-weekly targeted NMTP would pose minimal disruption to a high-performing athlete's training schedule and likely increase compliance to ensure the success of the NMTP.

Acute effects of cold, heat and contrast pressure therapy on forearm muscles regeneration in combat sports athletes: a randomized clinical trial.

Due to the specific loads that occur in combat sports athletes' forearm muscles, we decided to compare the immediate effect of monotherapy with the use of compressive heat (HT), cold (CT), and alternating therapy (HCT) in terms of eliminating muscle tension, improving muscle elasticity and tissue perfusion and forearm muscle strength. This is a single-blind, randomized, experimental clinical trial. Group allocation was performed using simple 1:1 sequence randomization using the website randomizer.org. The study involved 40 40 combat sports athletes divided into four groups and four therapeutic sessions lasting 20min. (1) Heat compression therapy session (HT, n = 10) (2) (CT, n = 10), (3) alternating (HCT, n = 10), and sham, control (ShT, n = 10). All participants had measurements of tissue perfusion (PU, [non-reference units]), muscle tension (T-[Hz]), elasticity (E-[arb- relative arbitrary unit]), and maximum isometric force (Fmax [kgf]) of the dominant hand at rest (Rest) after the muscle fatigue protocol (PostFat.5min), after therapy (PostTh.5min) and 24h after therapy (PostTh.24h). A two-way ANOVA with repeated measures: Group (ColdT, HeatT, ContrstT, ControlT) × Time (Rest, PostFat.5min, PostTh.5min, Post.24h) was used to examine the changes in examined variables. Post-hoc tests with Bonferroni correction and ± 95% confidence intervals (CI) for absolute differences (△) were used to analyze the pairwise comparisons when a significant main effect or interaction was found. The ANOVA for PU, T, E, and Fmax revealed statistically significant interactions of Group by Time factors (p < 0.0001), as well as main effects for the Group factors (p < 0.0001; except for Fmax). In the PostTh.5min. Period, significantly (p < 0.001) higher PU values were recorded in the HT (19.45 ± 0.91) and HCT (18.71 ± 0.67) groups compared to the ShT (9.79 ± 0.35) group (△ = 9.66 [8.75; 10.57 CI] > MDC(0.73), and △ = 8.92 [8.01; 9.83 CI] > MDC(0.73), respectively). Also, significantly (p < 0.001) lower values were recorded in the CT (3.69 ± 0.93) compared to the ShT (9.79 ± 0.35) group △ = 6.1 [5.19; 7.01 CI] > MDC(0.73). For muscle tone in the PostTh.5m period significantly (p < 0.001) higher values were observed in the CT (20.08 ± 0.19Hz) group compared to the HT (18.61 ± 0.21Hz), HCT (18.95 ± 0.41Hz) and ShT (19.28 ± 0.33Hz) groups (respectively: △ = 1.47 [1.11; 1.83 CI] > MDC(0.845); △ = 1.13 [0.77; 1.49 CI] > MDC(0.845), and △ = 0.8 [0.44; 1.16 CI], < MDC(0.845)). The highest elasticity value in the PostTh.5m period were observed in the CT (1.14 ± 0.07) group, and it was significantly higher than the values observed in the HT (0.97 ± 0.03, △ = 0.18 [0.11; 0.24 CI] > MDC(0.094), p < 0.001), HCT (0.90 ± 0.04, △ = 0.24 [0.17; 0.31 CI] > MDC(0.094), p < 0.001) and ShT (1.05 ± 0.07, △ = 0.094 [0.03; 0.16 CI] = MDC(0.094), p = 0.003) groups. For Fmax, there were no statistically significant differences between groups at any level of measurement. The results of the influence of the forearm of all three therapy forms on the muscles' biomechanical parameters confirmed their effectiveness. However, the effect size of alternating contrast therapy cannot be confirmed, especially in the PostTh24h period. Statistically significant changes were observed in favor of this therapy in PU and E measurements immediately after therapy (PostTh.5min). Further research on contrast therapy is necessary.

Effect of the ACTN3 R577X Polymorphism on Serum Creatine Kinase and Interleukin-6 Levels after Maximal Eccentric Exercise.

This study explored the interaction among ACTN3 R577X polymorphism, muscle damage, and post-exercise inflammatory response by assessing changes over time in serum creatine kinase and interleukin-6 levels. Ninety-five active Japanese participants (50 men and 45 women: 22.2 ± 2.3 years) who did not perform daily upper limb strength exercises were enrolled. Participants executed five sets of six maximal eccentric elbow flexion exercises. The exercise duration was 9 min, including rest between sets (90 s). Maximum voluntary isometric contraction, range of motion, muscle soreness, and serum creatine kinase and interleukin-6 levels were assessed pre and post and 1, 2, 3, and 5 d after exercise. Genotype groups were classified as RR + RX and XX based on the absence of ACTN3 expression. A significant time and group interaction (p = 0.045) on creatine kinase levels was observed between the groups, indicating that the absence of ACTN3 significantly affects creatine kinase changes. Conversely, no significant interaction on change in interleukin-6, maximum voluntary isometric contraction, range of motion, and muscle soreness was observed between groups. The results highlight an interaction on creatine kinase activity post-exercise by ACTN3 R577X polymorphism, with elevated activity in the XX genotype.

A - 79 Comparison of Neuropsychological Test Performance between Monolingual Older Adults with Varying Cognitive Profiles

Abstract Objective With the rapid aging and cultural differences of the Latinx population, psychologists have expressed concerns regarding neuropsychological evaluations used for Alzheimer’s disease (ad), including the appropriateness of normative data and misinterpretation of test scores. This study explores various facets of neuropsychological performance between Spanish and English-speaking older adults with ad or normal cognition (NC). Method Participants (N = 17,716) from a de-identified database from the National Alzheimer’s’ Coordinating Center were administered Boston Naming Test-30 items (BNT-30), Animal &amp; Vegetable Verbal Fluency, Digit Symbol, Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE), Logical Memory I &amp; II (LM-I &amp; II), and Trail Making Test A &amp; B (TMT-A &amp; B). Correlations, multiple linear hierarchical regressions, and two-factor Analyses of Variance (ANOVAs) were used. Results Significant associations between interest areas (e.g., sex, ethnicity, race, age, education level, and/or age of cognitive onset) and test performances were found in each diagnosis group. Primary language, education level, and diagnosis were found to be significant predictors of LM-I (f2 = 0.19), LM-II (f2 = 0.22), and TMT-B (f2 = 0.15) performance. Significant interactions of primary language and diagnosis group were found among test performances for the MMSE, LM-II, Animals Verbal Fluency, TMT-A, and TMT-B (p &amp;lt; 0.05). Conclusions Further research is warranted to understand the complexity of using neuropsychological assessments to detect ad-related deficits among Spanish-speaking Latinx individuals. Evidence-based neuropsychological practice guidelines must acknowledge the importance of education level and primary language on test performance.

Subcortical volume in middle-aged adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Studies of youth and young adults with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have most consistently reported reduced volumes of the corpus callosum, cerebellum and subcortical structures. However, it is unknown whether this continues into middle adulthood or if individuals with PAE may experience premature volumetric decline with aging. Forty-eight individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and 28 healthy comparison participants aged 30 to 65 participated in a 3T MRI session that resulted in usable T1-weighted and T2-weighted structural images. Primary analyses included volumetric measurements of the caudate, putamen, pallidum, cerebellum and corpus callosum using FreeSurfer software. Analyses were conducted examining both raw volumetric measurements and subcortical volumes adjusted for overall intracranial volume (ICV). Models tested for main effects of age, sex and group, as well as interactions of group with age and group with sex. We found the main effects for group; all regions were significantly smaller in participants with FASD for models using raw volumes (P's < 0.001) as well as for models using volumes adjusted for ICV (P's < 0.046). Although there were no significant interactions of group with age, females with FASD had smaller corpus callosum volumes relative to both healthy comparison females and males with FASD (P's < 0.001). As seen in children and adolescents, adults aged 30 to 65 with FASD showed reduced volumes of subcortical structures relative to healthy comparison adults, suggesting persistent impact of PAE. Moreover, the observed volumetric reduction of the corpus callosum in females with FASD could suggest more rapid degeneration, which may have implications for cognition as these individuals continue to age.

Effects of 16weeks of plyometric training on knee biomechanics during the landing phase in athletes.

This study investigated the effects of plyometric training on lower-limb muscle strength and knee biomechanical characteristics during the landing phase. Twenty-four male subjects were recruited for this study with a randomised controlled design. They were randomly divided into a plyometric training group and a traditional training group and underwent training for 16weeks. Each subject was evaluated every 8weeks for knee and hip isokinetic muscle strength as well as knee kinematics and kinetics during landing. The results indicated significant group and time interaction effects for knee extension strength (F=74.942 and p=0.001), hip extension strength (F=99.763 and p=0.000) and hip flexion strength (F=182.922 and p=0.000). For landing kinematics, there were significant group main effects for knee flexion angle range (F=4.429 and p=0.047), significant time main effects for valgus angle (F=6.502 and p=0.011) and significant group and time interaction effects for internal rotation angle range (F=5.475 and p=0.008). The group main effect for maximum knee flexion angle was significant (F=7.534 and p=0.012), and the group and time interaction effect for maximum internal rotation angle was significant (F=15.737 and p=0.001). For landing kinetics, the group main effect of the loading rate was significant (F=4.576 and p=0.044). Significant group and time interaction effects were observed for knee extension moment at the moment of maximum vertical ground reaction force (F=5.095 and p=0.010) and for abduction moment (F=8.250 and p=0.001). These findings suggest that plyometric training leads to greater improvements in hip and knee muscle strength and beneficial changes in knee biomechanics during landing compared to traditional training.

The effects of life review-based collage book making on psychosocial functioning and discrepancy between patients' and hospital staff's perception of daily functioning in long-term hospitalized patients with schizophrenia: A randomized controlled trial

The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychosocial effects of life review-based collage book making on long-term inpatients with schizophrenia, and to verify the effectiveness of this program in reducing the discrepancy between self-perception and others' evaluation of patients' day-to-day functioning. Participants were randomly assigned to intervention or control group. The intervention group participated in an individual program of life review-based collage book making. At three evaluation points (pre-and post-intervention and at 3-month follow-up) the patients rated their subjective difficulties, and the staff rated the objective severity of the patient's day-to-day functioning, using the Schizophrenia Cognition Rating Scale Japanese version (SCoRS-J). The Profile of Mood Status-Brief Form (POMS), Recovery Assessment Scale, and Life Skills Profile were used to assess psychosocial functioning, and the changes in scores on the scales were compared between the two groups. In addition, for those with large discrepancy between patient and staff rating scores on the SCoRS-J at baseline, the change in the discrepancy scores were compared between the two groups. As a result, there was a significant group main effect and interaction between the two groups in the changes in the Confusion subscale scores of the POMS, indicating an alleviation of confusion in this program. In addition, for those with large discrepancy scores on the SCoRS-J, there was a significant group main effect and interaction between the two groups in discrepancy scores, indicating that this program can contribute to the reduction of discrepancies in the perceptions, and to the collaborative approach to treatment.

Evaluating the effectiveness of the Complex Behaviour Forum—A multisystem approach to supporting people with complex challenging behaviour

AbstractBackgroundThis study assessed the effectiveness of a cross‐departmental case review panel—the Multicap Complex Behaviour Forum (CBF)—in reducing challenging behaviour exhibited by people with intellectual disabilities.MethodsThirty participants (15 CBF participants and 15 matched‐control participants) took part in the study. Behavioural data was collected for each CBF participant (and their matched control) for the three‐month period before entering the CBF, during their time in the CBF, and the 3 months after exiting the CBF.ResultsThere was a significant interaction of group and time observed, with the CBF participants showing more change in behavioural incidents across time. Associated with this change was a noticeable reduction in staff injury costs related to the challenging behaviour of the CBF participants.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that positive behavioural and organisational outcomes are enhanced by fostering collaboration across multiple organisational systems when it comes to supporting people who exhibit challenging behaviours.

A low-calorie meal replacement improves body composition and metabolic parameters in shift workers with overweight and obesity: a randomized, controlled, parallel group trial

BackgroundShift work has been identified as a risk factor for several chronic health conditions including obesity. This study evaluated the impact of a low-calorie meal replacement (MR) as a dinner substitute on body composition and metabolic parameters in shift workers with overweight and obesity.MethodsAn 8-week parallel, randomized controlled trial was conducted on overweight and obese shift workers in a large hospital. An intervention group (IG) (n = 25) was provided with a low-calorie MR shake (∼200 kcal) as a replacement for dinner, every day for 8 weeks, while the control group (CG) (n = 25) continued their habitual diet. Anthropometric measurements, body composition, biochemical, and lifestyle data were assessed at the first and last visits. Analyses were done per protocol (PP) and by intention to treat (ITT).ResultsOver the study duration, both groups displayed moderate changes in anthropometric measurements and body composition, although these were not statistically significant according to the PP analysis. In the ITT analysis, apart from the hip circumference (HC), all other anthropometric parameters demonstrated significant group and time interactions, suggesting the advantageous effects of the meal replacement over the study period (P < 0.05). HDL and VLDL cholesterol measures showed significant main effects, influenced by both group (P = 0.031) and time (P = 0.050) respectively. The most pronounced dietary shift in the IG was a reduction in carbohydrate consumption and an increase in protein intake. Throughout the study, the meal replacement was well-tolerated, with no adverse events reported.ConclusionsThe meal replacement dietary intervention appears to offer beneficial health effects over time. Psychosocial Training Program for Lifeguards: A Pilot Study.

Research has highlighted the need for training lifeguards in psychosocial skills. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a short 10-h training program encompassing dimensions associated with emotional management, focus of attention, interpersonal relationships, and lifeguard behavior, and its effects on their psychosocial skills. A total of 64 lifeguards with experience ranging from 1 to 25 years (M = 5.93, SD = 6.07), randomly divided into experimental and control groups, participated in this study. The d2 Test of Attention, the Social Intelligence Test of O'Sullivan and Guilford, and the MSCEIT Emotional Intelligence Test were used to assess psychosocial skills. A multivariate analysis of variance for repeated measures (2 × 3 (Group × Time) MANOVA) was performed to analyze the effects of the training program on psychosocial skills. The results revealed that the experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in focus of attention and emotional intelligence compared to the control group. However, it is worth noting that no statistically significant group interactions were observed for measures of social intelligence. Taken together, these results seem to highlight the importance of including psychosocial content in the general training of lifeguards.

Effect of physical activity education on shoulder girdle pain and muscle strength in participants with fibromyalgia: a pilot experimental study.

In patients with fibromyalgia, exercise and education are recommended to decrease pain level and improve pain management. The latest scientific evidence recommends to focus interventions on the upper limb. The aim of this pilot study was to compare the immediate effect of physical activity education vs. a control group on pain and muscle capacity in fibromyalgia patients. Fifty-six participants with fibromyalgia were randomized into an experimental group and a control group. The intervention consisted in watching a five-minute video that provided information about fibromyalgia, pain, kinesiophobia and physical activity. The control group watched a neutral five-minute video about beavers in Quebec. Following the video, participants performed a muscular fatigue task consisting of a repeated unilateral shoulder abduction task. At baseline and following the muscular fatigue task, maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in shoulder abduction was assessed as well as pain level and pressure pain threshold (PPT) in the upper limb. Electromyographic activity was also assessed for upper trapezius and middle deltoid muscles. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was used to compare the MVC, PPT, and pain level before and after the muscular fatigue task between groups. The experimental group showed a significantly lower increase in pain than the control group in the middle deltoid muscle (p = 0.002) when assessed by verbal pain rating scale. No significant interaction or main effect of Group and Time were observed for the pain level at the upper trapezius and elbow extensor muscles nor for any of the PPT measures. According to electromyographic data, the median frequency values indicate that neither group experienced muscle fatigue during the repeated contraction task. The preliminary results suggest that a short physical activity education video positively influenced middle deltoid pain following repeated abduction in participants with fibromyalgia. Electromyographic analysis showed no evidence of objective muscle fatigue, suggesting that there might be a partial disconnection between the perception of muscle fatigue and the physiological biomarkers associated with muscle fatigue.

Effects of dual-task resistance exercise on cognition, mood, depression, functional fitness, and activities of daily living in older adults with cognitive impairment: a single-blinded, randomized controlled trial

BackgroundRegular exercise is emphasized for the improvement of functional capacity and independence of older adults. This study aimed to compare the effects of a dual-task resistance exercise program and resistance exercise on cognition, mood, depression, physical function, and activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults with cognitive impairment.MethodsA total of 44 older adults participated in the study. Participants were randomly allocated to an experimental group (n = 22) performing a dual-task resistance exercise program for cognitive function improvement and a control group (n = 22) performing a resistance exercise program. Both groups performed the exercise for 40 min per session, three times a week, for 6 weeks (18 sessions). Cognition, mood, depression, functional fitness, and ADL were quantified before and after the intervention using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), profile of mood states (POMS), geriatric depression scale (GDS), senior fitness test (SFT), and Korean version of ADL, respectively.ResultsThere was a significant time and group interaction on the MMSE (p = 0.044). There were no significant time and group interactions in the POMS, GDS, SFT, or ADL. Cognitive function (p < 0.001), mood (p < 0.001), depression (p < 0.001), functional fitness (p < 0.001), and ADL (p < 0.001) significantly improved after dual-task resistance exercise, and cognitive function (p < 0.001), mood (p < 0.001), depression (p < 0.001), functional fitness (p < 0.001), and ADL (p < 0.001) significantly improved after resistance exercise.ConclusionsDual-task resistance exercise is more effective than resistance exercise in improving cognitive function in older adults with cognitive impairment. Both dual-task resistance exercise and resistance exercise improves mood, depression, functional fitness, and ADL after the intervention. We propose using dual-task resistance exercises for cognitive and physical health management in the older adults with cognitive impairment.Trial registrationThis study was registered with the Clinical Research Information Service (WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform) (Registration ID, KCT0005389; Registration date, 09/09/2020).

Kinesiology taping improves balance in football players with chronic ankle instability

IntroductionThere appears to be no consensus on the usefulness of kinesiological tape in athletes with chronic ankle instability, therefore the aim of this study was to examine the effects of kinesiological tape on dynamic balance in football players with chronic ankle instability. Design, setting and participantsFootball players who were eligible for this randomized controlled study were randomly assigned (allocation ratio 1:1:1) to one of three groups: experimental group, placebo group or control. InterventionsThe experimental group received kinesiological tape bands applied to the peroneal and tibialis anterior muscles. The tape was applied for 48 h. The placebo group received a sham kinesiological tape application for the same duration, while the control group did not receive any tape. Outcome measuresBalance was assessed using the Y-Balance Test at baseline and 48 h later, with the kinesiological tape still in place, either sham or control. ResultsA total of 69 (23 per group) semi-professional, male, players (22.1 ± 4.3 years) completed the study. There was a significant change in test performance over time (F1,66 = 9.425; P = 0.003; ηp2 = 0.125), with a significant interaction for group × time (F2,66 = 11.154; P < 0.001; ηp2 = 0.253). The kinesiological tape group improved the overall performance in the Y-balance test (85.2 ± 8.7% to 90.3 ± 8.4%, P < 0.001), while no differences were observed for the placebo and control groups. ConclusionThe application of kinesiological tape for 48 h improved overall dynamic balance performance on the Y-balance test. These findings suggest that kinesiological tape could be a beneficial strategy for addressing the consequences of chronic ankle instability.

Effect of three months high-intensity anaerobic treadmill-based exercise on intuitive decision-making capability

Background. Quick decision making capability is critical for handling critical situation. Intuitive decision making is most desirable for situations requiring quick and heedful decisions. Decision making, just like other cognitive skills can be modified through several factors like physical activity. In this study we aim to decipher the effects of high-intensity treadmill-based exercise on intuitive ability. Methods. A prospective cohort design with convenience sampling with a sample of 80 participants from various gym centres. Following ethical approval and informed consent, participants were divided in to either no exercise (NE) (n = 38) condition or treadmill-based exercise (TBE) group (n = 42). Data on socio-demographic characters, self-reported mental health history and IDM scores were obtained. Data were obtained at baseline and after 34 sessions of treadmill-based exercise for TBE and 12 weeks of normal physical activity for NE group. Mixed-factor ANOVA, paired t-test and regression analysis was used utilizing SPSS version 21. Results. A significant improvement in IDM scores was observed in TBE group after 34 exercise sessions as compared to NE group (p &lt; .01). A significant interaction of time points and group was also revealed through mixed-factor ANOVA (p &lt; .01). Socio-demographic characters and mental health history had no significant impact on IDM scores. Chi-square analysis of the IDM sub-categories showed a significant increase in intuitive decision making individuals in the TBE group post intervention (p &lt; .01). Conclusion. Exercise training can be used as a potential training tool for improving decision making outcomes in critical settings.

Effect of 24-form simplified Tai Chi on executive inhibitory control of college students: a randomized controlled trial of EEG.

College students, undergoing crucial cognitive development, face challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic that impact their executive functions. While existing research indicates positive effects of Tai Chi (TC) on college students' cognitive abilities, there is a scarcity of studies investigating its impact on executive functions and frontal brain activity. This study aimed to compare the effects of 24-form simplified TC training on college students' executive functions and frontal brain electrical activity. The hypothesis posited that the TC group would exhibit superior performance compared to the control group during COVID-19 pandemic. Seventy college students were randomly assigned to either TC group or control group, engaging in 36 sessions (3 sessions per week, 45 min each) over 12 weeks. Executive inhibitory control was assessed using the Stroop Color and Word Test, and resting brain electrical activity in the frontal area was recorded through Electroencephalography. ACC was influenced by group, group-time interaction, and Stroop task-time interaction. RT was affected by time, task condition, task condition-time interaction, and task condition-group interaction. Notably, the TC group showed improved ACC (from 96.54 ± 3.27% to 98.90 ± 1.32%) and decreased RT (from 0.73 ± 0.12 to 0.66 ± 0.07 s), particularly in the inconsistent task. Regarding EEG band power, significant Group and Time interaction effects were found in F3-θ, F3-α, F3-β, F4-θ, and F4-α. Moreover, within the TC group, significant increases in F3-θ band power (from 4.66 ± 3.55 to 7.71 ± 8.44) and F4-θ band power (from 4.41 ± 2.82 to 8.61 ± 9.51) (10-3·μV·Hz) were noted pre-and post-tests. In the control group, significant decreases were observed in F3-α band power (from 5.18 ± 4.61 to 2.79 ± 2.11) and F4-α band power (from 5.57 ± 6.58 to 2.48 ± 1.95) (10-3·μV·Hz). The pandemic-induced panic may impact frontal lobe brain activity in college students. TC training not only improves executive inhibitory control but may also enhance localized brain activity, suggesting its potential as a holistic intervention for cognitive and neurological well-being during stressful periods.

Reprint of Altered corollary discharge in the auditory cortex could reflect louder inner voice experience in patients with verbal hallucinations, a pilot fMRI study

IntroductionWide range of evidence associates auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) with frontotemporal corollary discharge deficit. AVH likely reflect altered experiences of the inner voice and are phenomenologically diverse. The aspects of hallucinations (and related inner voice experiences) that could be explained by this deficit remain unclear. To address this important subject, we examined the temporal cortex activity during two tasks with and without corollary discharge. MethodsWe carried out an event-related BOLD fMRI study to examine temporal cortex activity in seven patients and eight healthy controls during two tasks with and without corollary discharge: reading aloud and hearing, respectively. Data were denoised by removing independent components related to head movement and subsequently processed using finite impulse response basis function to address hemodynamic response variations. To mitigate the small sample size, final analyses were carried out using permutation-based analysis of variance. ResultsThere was a significant group interaction in the Read relative to Hear condition during the early post-stimulus stage in the left Heschl's Gyrus (p<0.01, corrected for multiple comparisons, at peak voxel [−72,53,41]). This effect was driven by a higher activity in the Read relative to the Hear condition in the same area in the patients (p<0.02, corrected). ConclusionsOur results are consistent with prior literature indicating abnormal frontotemporal disconnection in participants with hallucinations. The functional repercussions of this deficit were limited to the primary auditory cortex in early post-stimulus stage, which suggests louder experience of the inner voice in patients and could account for the loudness of their hallucinations.
