1. 1. The effect of salinity on the level of glucose, trehalose, glycerol, glycogen and ninhydrin positive material and the initiation of respiration during Artemia morphogenesis was studied. 2. 2. The effect of salinity on trehalose levels suggests the possibility of another role for this compound besides that of a store of oxidisable substrate. 3. 3. Hydration rather than salinity determines the initiation of respiration. 4. 4. No significant effect of salinity on the specific activity of trehalase, maltase, lactic dehydrogenase, glyceraldehyde dehydrogenase or phosphofructokinase could be detected during morphogenesis.
