Shear Bond Strength of Clear Aligner Attachment Using 4-META/MMA-TBB Resin Cement on Glazed Monolithic Zirconia.

Increasing demand for adult orthodontic treatment using clear aligners has highlighted challenges in bonding clear aligner attachments to various restorations. Specifically, the bond strength of clear aligner attachments to glazed monolithic zirconia has not been extensively studied. This study aims to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) and mode of failure (MOF) of conventional bonding methods versus Superbond C&B (4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement) for clear aligner attachments on glazed monolithic zirconia. Fifty sintered and glazed zirconia samples were divided into five groups and attached with clear aligner attachments: Si (silane), B (bonding agent), SiB (bonding agent and silane), SU (Superbond C&B), and SiSU (silane and Superbond C&B). SBS and MOF of these samples were analyzed. Results indicated a significant difference in bond strength among the groups. SiSU exhibited the highest bond strength, followed by SU, while B had the lowest bond strength. SEM analysis revealed that SiSU and SU predominantly exhibited mixed failure, indicating high bond strength without affecting the glazed layers of the zirconia. In contrast, B exhibited only adhesive failure at the interface, resulting in insufficient bond strength for effective orthodontic treatment. In conclusion, using 4-META/MMA-TBB resin cement provides high bond strength for clear aligner attachments on glazed zirconia with minimal material damage during debonding.

The Effect of Carbamide Peroxide Bleaching Gel with and without Remineralizing Agents on Microtensile Bond Strength of Resin Composites to Enamel

Introduction: Carbamide peroxide bleaching gel, along with remineralizing agents, can induce changes in the structure and mineral content of enamel, potentially leading to a decrease in the bond strength of resin composite to the enamel. Therefore, this laboratory study aimed to determine the effect of carbamide peroxide bleaching gel with and without remineralizing agents on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of resin composites with microhybrid and nanofill structures to enamel. Materials and Methods: Thirty extracted third molar teeth were randomly divided into five groups, each group subdivided into two equal subgroups: Group 1: Control group, Group 2: Bleaching gel without fluoride, Group 3: Bleaching gel containing fluoride, Group 4: Bleaching gel containing CPP-ACP, and Group 5: Bleaching gel containing fluoride and CPP-ACP. In the first subgroups, nanofilled resin composite Filtek Z350, while in the second subgroups, microhybrid resin composite Filtek Z250 were bonded to enamel surface. After specimen preparation, µTBS was measured using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using parametric tests (P value<0.05). Results: The highest µTBS of resin composite to enamel was observed in the control group, while the lowest bond strength was seen in the fluoride-containing bleaching group. Comparisons of µTBS between the study groups pairwise, except for the comparison between the control group and the bleaching group, the bleaching group with (CPP-ACP+Fluoride), and the (CPP-ACP) group with the fluoride group, showed significant differences in bond strength. Although, the mean µTBS of the Filtek Z250 composite was higher than the Filtek Z350 composite in all groups, but this difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The use of carbamide peroxide bleaching gel with remineralizing agents leads to a decrease in µTBS of the resin composite to the enamel.

Efficacy of root-end filling techniques using premixed putty type bioceramic cements: an ex vivo study.

Currently, premixed putty-type bioceramic cements (PPBCs) have become popular materials for root-end fillings. This study investigated three root-end filling techniques using PPBCs and calcium silicate-based sealers including EDTA pretreatment. Ninety root segments were prepared and standardized with an artificial fin and lateral canal, and assigned to three groups (n = 30). Root-end fillings were placed using BC-RRM Putty alone (Group PA), injection of BC sealer followed by BC-RRM Putty (Lid Technique: Group LT) or BC-RRM Putty with BC sealer coating (Deep putty packing technique: Group DP). Half of each group was pretreated with 17% EDTA. The radiographic images of the specimens were assessed by five graders and push-out bond strength tests were conducted. The data were analyzed with a general linear model including two-way ANOVA and chi-square test at a significance level of 5%. DP approach demonstrated significantly higher bond strength than LT (P < 0.05). However, there was no statistically significant difference in bond strength between PA and either DP or LT. EDTA pretreatment had no significant effect on push-out bond strength. Radiographically, for the main canal, PA and DP scored significantly higher than LT. In the fin, PA scored significantly higher than others (P < 0.05). Our study highlights variations in root-end filling techniques. Injecting a bulk of bioceramic sealer before the placement of PPBCs may reduce bond strength and radiopacity. The application of PPBCs alone or in the deep putty technique demonstrates potential for favorable outcomes. EDTA pretreatment did not enhance bond-strength. Careful selection and application of bioceramic materials and techniques in root-end fillings may influence the outcome of endodontic root-end surgery. When PPBCs and calcium silicate-based sealers are used together for root-end fillings, sealer followed by deep putty application may offer improved bond strength and radiographic fill compared to the lid technique.

Effect of Salvadora persica on resin-dentin bond stability

BackgroundThe stability of resin–dentin interfaces is still highly questionable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Salvadora persica on resin–dentin bond durability.Materials and methodsExtracted human third molars were used to provide mid-coronal dentin, which was treated with 20% Salvadora persica extract for 1 min after acid-etching. Microtensile bond strength and interfacial nanoleakage were evaluated after 24 h and 6 months. A three-point flexure test was used to measure the stiffness of completely demineralized dentin sticks before and after treatment with Salvadora persica extract. The hydroxyproline release test was also used to measure collagen degradation by endogenous dentin proteases. Statistical analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA followed by post hoc Bonferroni test and unpaired t-test. P-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.ResultsThe use of Salvadora persica as an additional primer with etch-and-rinse adhesive did not affect the immediate bond strengths and nanoleakage (p > 0.05). After 6 months, the bond strength of the control group decreased (p = 0.007), and nanoleakage increased (p = 0.006), while Salvadora persica group showed no significant difference in bond strength and nanoleakage compared to their 24 h groups (p > 0.05). Salvadora persica increased dentin stiffness and decreased collagen degradation (p < 0.001) compared to their controls.ConclusionSalvadora persica extract pretreatment of acid-etched dentin preserved resin–dentin bonded interface for 6 months.Clinical significanceDurability of resin-dentin bonded interfaces is still highly questionable. Endogenous dentinal matrix metalloproteinases play an important role in degradation of dentinal collagen within such interfaces. Salvadora persica may preserve resin-dentin interfaces for longer periods of time contributing to greater clinical success and longevity of resin composite restorations.

Effect of Different Primers on Shear Bond Strength of Base Metal Alloys and Zirconia Frameworks.

Ensuring a secure bond between a framework structure and layering composite resin veneer is essential for a long-lasting dental restoration. A variety of primer systems are available to facilitate the adhesive bonding. Nevertheless, the growing preference for efficiency and simplicity in dentistry has made the one-bottle universal primers a desirable option. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of universal primers on the shear bond strength (SBS) of base metal alloy (BMA) and zirconia to layering composite resin. Each 160 BMA and zirconia 20 × 10 × 5 mm test specimen was fabricated. Eight different primers (SunCera Metal Primer, Metal Primer Z, Reliance Metal Primer, Alloy Primer, MKZ Primer, Monobond Plus, ArtPrime Plus, and Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus) were applied to 20 specimens in each group. Subsequently, a 5 × 2 mm composite resin build-up was applied. SBS tests were performed after 24 h of water storage and after thermocycling (25,000 cycles, 5-55 °C). On BMA, after water storage for 24 h, the bond strength values ranged from 26.53 ± 3.28 MPa (Metal Primer Z) to 29.72 ± 2.00 MPa (MKZ Primer), while after thermocycling, bond strength values ranged from 25.19 ± 1.73 MPa (MKZ Primer) to 27.69 ± 2.37 MPa (Clearfil Ceramic Primer Plus). On a zirconia base, after 24 h, the bond strengths values ranged from 22.63 ± 2.28 MPa (Reliance Primer) to 29.96 ± 2.37 MPa (MKZ Primer) and from 23.77 ± 3.86 MPa (Metal Primer Z) to 28.88 ± 3.09 MPa (Monobond Plus) after thermocycling. While no significant difference in bond strength was found between the primers on the BMA base, five primer combinations differed significantly from each other on zirconia (p = 0.002-0.043). All primers achieved a bond strength greater than 23 MPa on both framework materials after thermocycling. Thus, all primers tested can be applied to both framework materials with comparable results.

Filling Material Bond Strength to Dentin Is Positively Influenced by the Agitation of Endodontic Final Irrigating Solutions.

The final step of irrigation has been considered to of increase the bonding strength of filling material to dentin. This study investigated the impact of three final-step irrigation methods on the endodontic sealer bond strength to dentin by using a micro push-out test. Palatal roots of human maxillary molars were cleaned and shaped and randomly divided in six groups (n=15) according to the final-step irrigation method and the type of root canal sealer used. The solutions used for the final-step irrigation were 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and 2.5% sodium hypochlorite, which underwent three methods: 1) syringe-needle irrigation/conventional, 2) passive ultrasonic irrigation, and 3) XP-endo Finisher agitation. The root canal sealers used were: EndoSequence BC Sealer, and AH-Plus sealer. Roots were obturated with the single cone technique and then, cross-sectioned in 2-mm-thick slices (3 slices from each root). Push-out test was performed on the sliced specimens (cervical, middle, and apical thirds) with a universal testing machine. Bond strength values were recorded in megapascal (MPa). Subsequently, each specimen was longitudinally split to verify the type of failure. Data analysis was performed using Johnson transformation, three-way analysis of variance, Tukey's post-hoc tests, and the partial Eta squared test. There were significant differences in bond strength between the sealers [AH: 4.46±2.24 and BC: 3.47±2.19 MPa (P<0.001)]; between final-step irrigation methods [passive ultrasonic irrigation: 4.52±2.25, XP-endo Finisher: 3.93±3.93 and syringe-needle irrigation/conventional: 3.37±2.51 MPa (P<0.001)], and between the root canal thirds represented by the sliced specimens [cervical: 5.45±2.39, middle: 4.14±1.99 and apical: 2.30±1.30 MPa (P<0.001)]. The interaction between the variables had no significance (P>0.05). Agitation of the final irrigating solution may improve the bonding of the sealer to canal walls. AH-Plus sealer had the highest bond strength. The bond strength reduced significantly towards the apical third.

Evaluation of Sealer Remnants Using a Bioceramic Sealer Single-cone Technique after Post Space Preparation and its Influence on the Adhesion of Fibre Posts in vitro.

To compare calcium silicate-based endodontic sealer and epoxy resin-based sealer remnants on root canal walls after post space preparation and their influence on the bond strength of fibre posts fixed with a dual-cured resin cement. Thirty-six extracted single-root mandibular premolars were instrumented and divided randomly into two equal groups with different endodontic sealers. iRoot SP (Innovative BioCeramix, Vancouver, Canada) was employed in the experimental group and AH Plus (Dentsply Sirona, Charlotte, NC, USA) was used in the control group. Sealer remnants were observed under an endodontic microscope after root canal therapy and post space preparation. Fibre posts were fixed with dual-cured resin cement. Specimens were taken at each third of the post space. The push-out bond strength was measured using a universal testing machine and fracture modes were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using an independent samples t test and one-way analysis of variance. There was no statistically significant difference in bond strength of fibre posts between the control and experimental group (P > 0.05); however, sealer remnants were observed in 38.9% of the samples treated with iRoot SP and none of the samples treated with AH Plus. The major fracture mode in samples treated with iRoot SP was adhesive failure between the resin cement and the post, and no adhesive failure between the resin cement and dentine occurred at the site of the sealer remnant. The presence of iRoot SP remnants on the root canal walls after post space preparation did not interfere with bonding. iRoot SP is a viable option for root canal obturation before fibre post cementation.

Bond Strength of a Novel Universal Resin Cement to Dentin with or without an Adhesive Bonding Agent: An In Vitro Study.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength and fracture mode of universal resin cement to dentin compared to self-adhesive and adhesive resin cement with and without an adhesive bonding agent. Seventy-two molar teeth were sectioned to expose coronal dentin, divided into three groups, and assigned to RelyX Universal (universal), RelyX Ultimate (adhesive), or RelyX Unicem 2 (self-adhesive) cements from 3M. The 3 groups were further subdivided into 2 subgroups of 12 specimens each, with or without the use of an adhesive bonding agent. Lithium-disilicate discs were bonded to the dentin surface using the cements, stored for 24 hours in distilled water, and subjected to 2,000 thermocycles before shear bond strength testing and fracture mode analysis. Significant differences in bond strength and fracture mode were found between groups based on cement or the use of a bonding agent. Both the universal and adhesive cements had significantly greater bond strengths to dentin with the use of a bonding agent versus no bonding agent. With the self-adhesive cement, there was no significant increase in bond strength to dentin with the use of a bonding agent. The novel universal resin cement had similar bond strengths to dentin as the adhesive cement with the use of a bonding agent, and similar bond strengths as the self-adhesive cement without the use of a bonding agent. The adhesively bonded universal cement had the greatest percentage of mixed and cohesive fractures. When greater adhesion is needed clinically, the novel universal resin cement may be used with an adhesive bonding agent. However, when less adhesion is needed, it could be used without a bonding agent in self-adhesive mode.

In vitro performance of an autocured universal adhesive system in bonding to dentin

BackgroundThe successful integration of resin-based dental adhesives significantly impacts restorative dentistry, providing efficient and aesthetically pleasing caries treatments. Among various adhesives, one-step self-etching adhesives (1-SEAs) have gained popularity due to their simplicity and short application time. However, concerns have been raised regarding their bonding performance and marginal adaptation characteristics, which differ from two-step self-etching adhesives (2-SEAs) and three-step etch-and-rinse adhesives. Additionally, light-cured bonding materials may encounter challenges in deep cavities and inaccessible areas, necessitating extended light irradiation time. Autocured bonding materials are a potential solution, but limited comparative studies have been conducted on their performance.MethodsIn this in vitro study, we evaluated a new autocured universal bonding material (Bondmer Lightless 2) and compared the results with recent light-cured bonding materials. Microshear bond strength (μSBS) tests were performed on 25 human molars using five different combinations of adhesives and composite resins: Bondmer Lightless 2 with Estelite Bulk Fill Flow (BE group), Bondmer Lightless 2 with a prototype composite resin (BO group), Prime&Bond Universal with SDR flow + (PS group), Scotchbond Universal with Filtek Bulk Fill (SF group), and G-Premio Bond with Gracefil BulkFlo (GG group). The bond strengths and failure modes were assessed using a universal testing machine and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. Marginal adaptation was evaluated using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) on 40 sound bovine maxillary incisors.ResultsThe μSBS test showed no significant differences in bond strength among the tested groups. Most failure modes were observed at the bond interface between the adhesive and the dentin. The autocured bonding material demonstrated significantly higher marginal adaptation (SI%) than PS, SF, and GG. The CLSM images corresponded with gaps observed in the SS-OCT images, indicating improved marginal sealing in the autocured group.ConclusionsThe new autocured universal bonding material exhibited comparable bond strength to a conventional light-cured material while demonstrating a superior marginal adaptation level. This finding suggested that the autocured material could be a valuable alternative, especially when extended light irradiation would pose a challenge. Further clinical studies would be warranted to evaluate the performance of the autocured bonding material in actual restorative dental practice.

Synthesis and analyses of injectable fluoridated-bioactive glass hydrogel for dental root canal sealing.

This study aimed to synthesize fluoride-doped bioactive glass (F-BG) based thermo-sensitive injectable hydrogel for endodontic applications. The structural and phase analyses were done with Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction, respectively. The setting time of prepared injectable was investigated at 21°C (in the presence and absence of an ultrasonic scalar) and at 37°C. Flowability was tested according to ISO-6876:2012 specifications, whereas injectability was checked by extrusion method using 21-, 22-, and 23-gauge needles. The in vitro bio-adhesion and push-out bond strength were studied on days 7 and 90 and compared with the commercially available TotalFill®. The ion release profile was analyzed for up to 30 days with Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy. The fluoride release analysis was conducted periodically for up to 21 days in deionized water and artificial saliva using an ion-selective electrode. The final setting time at 21°C, 21°C+ultrasonic scalar, and 37°C were 38.66±3.21, 29.12±1.23, and 32±3.46 min, respectively. The flowability was 25±3.94 mm, and the injectability coefficient was ≥70.3 for 22, 21, and 57% in a 23-gauge needle. Fluoride release in deionized water was found to be significantly higher than in artificial saliva and increased with time. A significant difference in bond strength was found between days 7 and 90, where the strength was increased, and a new apatite layer was formed on the tooth surface. A rapid release of calcium, phosphate, and silicon ions was seen initially, whereby the continuous release of these ions was observed for up to 30 days. The prepared F-BG injectable hydrogel has shown promising results and has the potential to be used as an endodontic sealer.

Root canal filling quality and bond strength of endodontic sealers to human and bovine dentin

Objective: This study aimed to compare the filling quality and bond strength of two endodontic sealers, AH Plus and Bio-C Sealer, in human and bovine teeth. Methods: The root canals of 60 [30 human (H) and 30 bovine (B)] single-rooted teeth were prepared and filled by lateral condensation of gutta-percha and AH Plus (groups AP-H and AP-B) or Bio-C Sealer (groups BC-H and BC-B). Six 1.5-mm-thick slices were obtained from each root. The specimens were observed under a stereomicroscope to assess filling quality, considering possible voids within the filling material. Subsequently, root slices were evaluated in terms of push-out bond strength and failure mode. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney tests and Spearman correlation coefficients (α=5%). Results: The filling quality provided by AP and BC was similar in both dentin substrates. However, when comparing human and bovine teeth, void scores were greater in the bovine samples, for both sealers. AP had higher bond strength to human and bovine dentin than BC. However, there was no significant difference in bond strength between dentin substrates, for both sealers tested. Also, there was a positive and moderate correlation between the bond strength values of human and bovine teeth. The mixed failure mode was the most prevalent. Conclusion: AP and BC provide similar filling quality, but the first presents higher bond strength values to human and bovine dentin. The use of bovine teeth as substitutes for human samples seems adequate in studies related to bond strength, but not in those testing root canal filling quality.&#x0D; Keywords: Dentin, Endodontics, Root canal filling materials.

Influence of surface treatments and adhesive protocols on repair bond strength of glass-matrix and resin-matrix CAD/CAM ceramics.

To specify the effects of self-etching ceramic primer, Monobond Etch and Prime (MEP), and universal adhesive (UA) on repair bond strength between CAD/CAM blocks and resin composite. Vita Mark II (VM), IPS e.max CAD (EMAX), Shofu Block HC (SHC), and Tetric CAD (TET) blocks were sliced and thermocycled. They were divided into four groups according to surface treatments (n = 24): control, sandblasting (AL), hydrofluoric acid etching (HF), and MEP application. SEM analysis assessed surface topography. Subdivided, specimens followed distinct adhesive protocols (n = 12): control (silane + adhesive [SA] or adhesive [A] only for MEP group) and UA. Microshear bond strength (μSBS) was measured following resin composite repair. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (p < 0.05). The μSBS of CAD/CAM blocks was significantly influenced by surface treatment type and adhesive protocol. The highest μSBS values for each block, considering surface treatment + adhesive protocol, were VM, HF + SA, or HF + UA; EMAX, MEP + A; and SHC and TET, AL + SA, or AL + UA. Except for EMAX, it was not the adhesive protocol that made the significant difference in bond strength for each CAD/CAM block, but the surface treatment. MEP + UA application on glass ceramics lowered μSBS values significantly, so it is not recommended in clinical conditions. Repair is an essential therapeutic option, particularly in esthetic restorations, to swiftly repair the impaired esthetics caused by fracture. Repair protocol is dependent on the restorative material, and to have a reliable repair bond strength, the following surface treatment and adhesive protocol combinations are recommended for each CAD/CAM block: VM, HF + SA, or HF + UA; EMAX, MEP + A; and SHC and TET, AL + SA, or AL + UA.

Effect of water aging on the shear bond strength of different self-adhesive restorative materials to dentin

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of water aging on the shear bond strength of four self-adhesive restorative materials on dentin. Sixty permanent human molars recently extracted for prophylactic purposes were used in this study. The crown of each tooth was cut under water-cooled conditions using a plaster cutting engine to expose the middle dentin surface of the teeth. The prepared teeth were randomly divided into six groups according to the restorative materials [KERR Vertise Flow (VF), GC EQUIA Forte (EQ), PENTRON Fusio Liquid Dentin (PF), IMICRYL Nova Compo SF (NC) Clearfil Majesty ES-2 (CM-control) and Clearfil Majesty ES Flow (CF-control)]. Each restorative material was applied to two different areas of each tooth (n = 120) using cylindrical silicone molds with dimensions of 2 mm × 2 mm. Macro-shear tests were conducted using a Universal Testing Machine (1 mm/min) initially (24 h) and after aging (6 months of water aging), and the failure types were analyzed. For the initial values, a significant difference in the shear bond strength of the self-adhesive and control groups was observed. After aging, the bond strength increased for flowable composite material (CF) and decreased for two different self-adhesive restorative material groups (NC and EQ). There was no significant difference in the bond strength before and aging in the paste-like control composite group (CM) and in the two self-adhesive restorative material groups (VF and PF). Differences in the shear bond strength were observed between the self-adhesive and control materials both before and after aging.

Push-out bond strength and SEM fractographical analysis of hollow fibre posts used with self-adhesive resin cement: a pilot study.

Detachment is the major cause of failure of endodontic fibre posts. Hollow posts have been recently introduced to overcome such issue. The primary aim of this pilot study was to compare the push-out bond strength of hollow posts and traditional solid posts. Eight round-shaped single-canal premolars extracted for periodontal reason were selected as sample and equally randomized into two groups: (i) traditional solid fibre posts-TECH21xop and ii) hollow fibre posts-TECHOLE. A dual-curing self-adhesive cement (new TECHCEM) was used for posts placement. Six horizontal sections-two from each portion of the root (coronal, middle and apical)-were obtained from each sample root, yielding a total of 24 sections for each group. Push-out test was performed on the sections and bond strength values were compared between groups and within each group. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) fractographical analysis was conducted on each section. Additional SEM and EDX analyses were performed on new samples of both posts, to assess fibres density and distribution, and the chemical composition of the fibres and the matrix. Hollow posts showed a significantly higher push-out bond strength (6.36±1.22 MPa) than solid posts (3.64±1.62 MPa). Among the three root portions of the same group, there was no significant difference in bond strength. In both groups, the most frequent type of fracture was a mixed adhesive failure with the cement covering 0 to 50% of the post perimeter. Hollow post fibres appear more similar in size and have a more homogeneous distribution, compared to solid posts. The two post types also have different chemical compositions.

Influence of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy on the bond strength of endodontic sealers to intraradicular dentin: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) was to investigate the influence of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on the bond strength of endodontic sealers to intraradicular dentin. This SRMA followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and was registered in the International Prospective Registry of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) (CRD42022319856). A population, intervention, control, and outcome (PICO) question was formulated: "Does antimicrobial photodynamic therapy decrease the bond strength of root canal sealers?". A literature search was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and ProQuest databases until July 2022. Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Assessment Guidelines for Quasi-Experimental Studies were used for quality assessment. The meta-analysis was based on the inverse variance (IV) method (p<0.05). Out of an initial 345 articles, 8 in vitro studies were included, published between 2013 and 2022. The studies were qualitatively analyzed; two studies showed a positive effect, two studies a negative effect, and the other studies showed no effect on bond strength of endodontic sealers to intraradicular dentin. Seven of the studies were included in the SRMA, which indicated that there was no significant difference in bond strength when using aPDT (P=0.90; MD: -0.03; 95% CI: -0.46 to -0.41). There was a high level of evidence for each meta-analysis outcome. It can be concluded that the use of aPDT as a method of root canal disinfection does not negatively influence the bond strength of endodontic sealers in the root canal.

Biomechanical performance of three fiberglass post cementation techniques: Imaging, in vitro, and in silico analysis.

The structural integrity of the resin cement layer, the bond strength, and the biomechanical behavior of different fiberglass post cementation techniques were evaluated. Thirty-three bovine incisors were divided into three groups (n = 11): conventional fiberglass post (CFP), conventional fiberglass post in flared root canals (CFL), and relined fiberglass post (RFP). Six specimens from each group were submitted for high-resolution microcomputed tomography (μCT) to evaluate the integrity and presence/volume of voids at the resin cement layer. Finite element analysis (FEA) of two three-dimensional (3D) models of each group were conducted, one considered ideal (without interface defects) and another containing the conditions identified in the μCT analysis. Push-out bond strength tests were conducted for all specimens. The CFL group had the greatest mean values of void (Thirds cervical: 73.67; middle: 95.67; apical: 47.33) and gap concentration (Thirds cervical: 14.67; middle: 15.83; apical: 8.33) compared with CFP and RFP. A significant difference in bond strength was observed between the cervical (1.33 MPa) and middle thirds (1.85 MPa) compared with the apical third (4.85 MPa) of the CFL. A significant difference was observed in the bond strength in the CFL (1.33 MPa) and RFP (3.29 MPa) in the cervical third, which were statistically similar to the bond strength of the CFP. The tensile stress distributions were similar in most structures, localized in the cervical region on the lingual surface. Structural defects in the interface layer might influence the bond strength and biomechanical behavior under the different fiberglass post cementations.

Effect of multi-purpose primer on bonding of acrylic resin to cast titanium and gold alloy after airborne-particle abrasion.

To clarify the effect of a multi-purpose primer combining several functional monomers on two prosthodontic materials (cast titanium and a gold alloy) after airborne-particle abrasion. Disk-shaped adherends were prepared from cast titanium (CP Titanium JIS2) and a gold alloy (Casting Gold M.C. Type IV). A silane-containing two-liquid primer (M&C primer (MC)) and two silane-free single-liquid primers (Alloy Primer (AP) and V-Primer (VP)) were used as surface-treatment agents. The shear bond strengths were determined before and after thermocycling to evaluate the adhesive durability, and the results were compared using a non-parametric statistical analysis. The effect of airborne-particle abrasion with alumina on the titanium surface was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). There was no significant difference in bond strength between the MC and AP before and after thermocycling, whereas VP showed significantly lower values. XPS revealed that the titanium acquired hydrophilic properties after the airborne-particle abrasion. The novelty of this study is that it shows that the presence/absence of the silane had no effect on the bonding of cast titanium with an acrylic resin. The study also showed that the multi-purpose primer can be used without any problems with both cast titanium and gold alloy, in combination with airborne-particle abrasion with alumina.

Influence of Fit-checking Material and Cleaning Protocols on the Bond Strength of Lithium Disilicate Glass-ceramics.

To evaluate the bond strength of a resin luting agent to a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic after the use of different fit-checking materials and cleaning protocols. Two hundred and forty-two (242) ceramic specimens were etched with 5% hydrofluoric acid for 20 seconds and distributed into 22 groups (n=10), in total. Four (4) groups were created based on fit-checking material and that had no following cleaning protocol: no fit-checking material used (control group); articulating paper; articulating spray; and fit-checker liquid. For each fit-checking material (3), 6 cleaning protocols were tested creating an additional 18 groups (n=10): air/water spray; 70% alcohol (ethanol); acetone; 35% phosphoric acid; 5% hydrofluoric acid; and a commercially available cleaning paste (Ivoclean, Ivoclar Vivadent). Silane and bonding resin were applied to all ceramic surfaces. Resin luting agent cylinders (1 mm in diameter) were created using silicone matrices, light-cured, and specimens were stored in deionized water at 37°C for 24 hours. Microshear bond strength test (μSBS) was performed on a universal testing machine (DL 500, EMIC) at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure. Results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). Articulating paper and fit-checker liquid, when not properly removed, negatively affected the bond strength (p<0.05). None of the tested cleaning protocols were effective for articulating paper (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in bond strength after the cleaning protocols between articulating spray and fit-checker liquid when compared to the control group (no contamination) (p>0.05). The cleaning protocols tested can effectively restore the bond strength of resin luting agents to lithium disilicate ceramics that were exposed to articulating spray or fit-checker liquid. The use of articulating paper is not recommended for fit-checking indirect lithium disilicate restorations.

Influence of atmospheric pressure changes on dentin bond strength of conventional, bulk-fill and single-shade resin composites.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the dentin bond strength of composite resins in response to environmental pressure changes. Ninety extracted human molar teeth were used. A mould (3 mm x 4 mm) was adapted on dentin, resin composites (conventional [n = 30] and single-shade composites [Ohmnicroma] [n = 30]) were filled in two increments of 2 mm. The bulk-fill composites (n = 30) were filled with one 4 mm increment. The specimens were stored for 30 days in artificial saliva. The specimens were exposed to hyperbaric pressure (283.6 kPa; 2.8 atmospheres absolute [atm abs]) or hypobaric pressure (34.4 kPa; 0.34 atm abs) once daily for 30 days and the control group was stored at atmospheric pressure for 30 days. The bond strength was tested with a universal testing machine and the failures were examined with a stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope. Statistical analyses were performed using analysis of variance with post hoc tests, and the Weibull analysis. Regardless of environmental pressure changes, the bulk-fill composites showed the highest bond strength. There was no significant difference in bond strength between the hypobaric and atmospheric pressure (control) groups after 30 days in all resins. The hyperbaric group showed lower bond strength for bulk-fill composites than the control group. Dentists experienced in diving and aviation medicine should definitely take part in the initial and periodic medical examinations of divers and aircrew to give appropriate treatment. Bulk-fill composite resins can be preferred in divers and aircrew due to high bond strength values.

Evaluating the Bond Strength of a Polymer Infiltrated Ceramic Network to Zirconia Using the Crossbeam Push-Off Method.

Porcelains and glass-ceramics have been used to produce CAD-milled veneers and crowns for zirconia copings and implant-abutments. This study evaluated the bondstrength of a polymer-infiltrated-ceramic-network to zirconia using two adhesive cement systems: Panavia 21 and Multilink Automix. Lithium disilicate and feldspathic porcelain were also tested as reference CAD-On materials. Long beams (3x6x40 mm³) of zirconia and short beams (3x6x15 mm³) of the CAD-On materials were prepared. Zirconia and each CAD-On material were bonded in a crossbeam arrangement and subjected to a modified tensile bond-strength test. Half of the samples in each group (n=10) were tested 5 days after bonding (baseline) and the remaining (n=10) underwent aging (50,000 thermocycles at 5°C and 55°C) prior to bond-strength testing. The effects of material, cement, and aging on the tensile bond-strength were tested using a three-way ANOVA. The reference lithium disilicate/Multilink system showed no significant differences in bond strength compared to polymer-infiltrated-ceramic-network and porcelain. The long-term retention of polymer-infiltrated-ceramic-network was not statistically different compared to the baseline values and the two reference materials. With comparable bond strength between all materials, polymer-infiltrated-ceramic-network is the favorable choice for CAD-On to zirconia copings and implant-abutments due to its superior resistance to fatigue fracture relative to porcelain.
