Assessment of the changes in seed yield and nutritional quality of quinoa grown under rainfed Mediterranean environments.

Climate change is considered a serious threat to agriculture and food security. It is linked to rising temperatures and water shortages, conditions that are expected to worsen in the coming decades. Consequently, the introduction of more drought-tolerant crops is required. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) has received great attention worldwide due to the nutritional properties of its seeds and its tolerance to abiotic stress. In this work, the agronomic performance and seed nutritional quality of three quinoa varieties were studied during two consecutive years (2019-2020) under three water environmental conditions of Southwestern Europe (irrigated conditions, fresh rainfed, and hard rainfed) with the goal of determining the impact of rainfed conditions on this crop performance. High precipitations were recorded during the 2020 growing season resulting in similar grain yield under irrigation and fresh rainfed conditions. However, in 2019, significant yield differences with penalties under water-limiting conditions were found among the evaluated environmental conditions. Furthermore, nutritional and metabolomic differences were observed among seeds harvested from different water environments including the progressive accumulation of glycine betaine accompanied by an increase in saponin and a decrease in iron with water limitation. Generally, water-limiting environments were associated with increased protein contents and decreased yields preserving a high nutritional quality despite particular changes. Overall, this work contributes to gaining further knowledge about how water availability affects quinoa field performance, as it might impact both seed yield and quality. It also can help reevaluate rainfed agriculture, as water deficit can positively impact the nutritional quality of seeds.

Comparison of two apheresis systems for granulocyte collection without hydroxyethyl starch.

Granulocyte transfusion (GTX) is a treatment option for severe infections in patients with neutropenia. In previous studies, hydroxyethyl starch (HES) was used to enhance red blood cell sedimentation for granulocyte collection (GC). However, there are safety concerns about HES, and HES is not readily available in some countries. Therefore, we compared the granulocyte counts and GC efficiency achieved by two apheresis systems without HES. All consecutive GC procedures performed between July 2011 and March 2018 at our hospital were analysed. COBE Spectra was used until 5 February 2016, and Spectra Optia was used afterwards. HES was not used. Twenty-six GC procedures were performed, including 18 performed using COBE Spectra and 8 using Spectra Optia. When Spectra Optia was used, >1 × 1010 neutrophils were collected from seven of the eight (88%) procedures. Although there was no significant difference in the granulocyte yield between COBE Spectra-based and Spectra Optia-based GC procedures, the collection efficiency of Spectra Optia was significantly higher than that of COBE Spectra (p = 0.021). Furthermore, the granulocyte yields of Spectra Optia-based GC tended to be more strongly correlated with the peripheral blood neutrophil count on the day of apheresis than those of COBE Spectra-based GC. Our results suggest that Spectra Optia achieves greater GC efficiency than COBE Spectra, even without HES. GTX may be a therapeutic option for severe neutropenia, even in places where HES is not available.

Response of Three Barley Cultivars Hordeum vulgare L. to Water Stress Under Field Conditions

A field experiment was conducted in one of the agricultural fields located in the center of Hilla/Babylon, within latitude 32°31’ north and longitude 44°21’ east. During the season 2021-2022 in a soil with a loam silty texture. The aim of the study is to know the effect of water stress on the yield of green feed and grain and its components and the water use efficiency of the barley crop. A split-plot design with RCBD arrangement was used with three replicates. The irrigation treatments that include the comparison treatment (50% depletion of the available water) were occupied and three water depletion treatments (40, 60, 80%) of the amount of water for the control treatment, the main plot, while the cultivars occupied subplot No significant differences appeared between the control treatment and the irrigation treatment, 80% of the control treatment in the yield of green feed and grains, and thus it was possible to save water by 20% without a significant decrease from the control treatment. The irrigation treatments 80 and 60% showed higher efficiency in using water for grain production than the control treatment. The cultivars showed significant differences in yield, as Bohouth 244 gave the highest yield of feed and grain, and it did not differ significantly from cultivar IPA 99. Also, Bohouth 244 showed the best water use efficiency to produce a larger amount of grain, and it did not differ significantly from IPA 99.

The effects of deficit irrigation on water use efficiency, yield and quality of drip-irrigated tomatoes grown under field conditions in Zimbabwe

Water availability in the root zone directly affects the yield and quality of tomatoes yet in most cases in sub-Saharan Africa water is either expensive or scarce. It is therefore important to establish and utilise suitable irrigation strategies in order to produce the crop in a sustainable way. In this study the effect of conventional and deficit irrigation treatments on yield, fruit quality and water use efficiency (WUE) were determined. Four trials were conducted at the University of Zimbabwe Farm from 2014-2017 with four treatments per trial: T1 = 100%, T2 = 80%, T3 = 60%, and T4 = 50% of crop water requirements (ETc). Treatments had equal number of plants per trial with an in-row plant spacing of 0.3 m and 0.5 m between adjacent rows. ETc was determined daily for each treatment and the corresponding volume applied through one drip emitter per plant. Fruits from each treatment were gathered while ripening and the total yield obtained. WUE was calculated by dividing the total fresh yield by total irrigation water applied. Maximum yield was obtained where 100% ETc was applied, with no significant difference between yield of plants at 80% and 60% ETc, except in 2016. Yield decreased with 50% ETc in 2014, 2015, and 2017 with no significant difference in yield between 60% and 50% ETc treatments in 2016. The 2015 season recorded the highest yield when compared to other trials showing that we can save 40% of water resulting in high WUE with minimum loss in yield. Deficit irrigation reduced fruit water but increased fruit soluble solids (°brix), vitamin C and fruit acid concentrations. Firmness was best when 60% ETc was applied. These results show that deficit irrigation is feasible for crop water management options for the production of high-quality field-grown tomatoes without major yield reductions.

Adaptability comparison and application assessment of various bioenergy grasses on different marginal lands in China

To understand the effects of different marginal land and environments on the growth, biomass yield, quality, and theoretical ethanol yield of different bioenergy grasses, and to compare the adaptability of different bioenergy grasses. This study was conducted in four representative marginal lands located in Chongqing, Liuyang, Nanyang, and Beijing. The agronomic traits, cell wall compositions, and theoretical alcohol yield of nine energy grasses containing 22 accessions were compared. The effects of environmental factors on biomass yield, quality, and theoretical ethanol yield of different accessions were evaluated via parametric and non-parametric statistics and AMMI analysis, and the stability and adaptability of all accessions were also compared. The results revealed that there were significant differences in biomass yield, quality, and theoretical alcohol yield among different species at the same trial site, and the same species also showed large differences between trial sites. Grasses exhibited divergent adaptability across trial sites, such as Saccharum arundinaceum and Miscanthus floridulus were sensitive to low temperatures and could not overwinter normally in Beijing. The biomass yield of Miscanthus sacchariflorus declined as the latitude decreased. Miscanthus × giganteus, Miscanthus lutarioriparius × sinensis, and Panicum virgatum exhibited greater resistance to environmental changes, indicating superior stability and environmental adaptability.

The Adaptation Assessment of Different Sunflower Cultivars under Kabul Agro Climatic Conditions

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is one of the most important oilseeds crops due to its wide adaptability, mechanization potential, low labor requirements, and high oil and protein content. The present study was conducted to evaluate the performance of elite sunflower cultivars under Kabul agro-ecological conditions. The main objective of this research is to identify superior genotypes best adapted to Kabul agro-ecological conditions. Three improved cultivars of sunflowers, two from France (Robiacs and Imeriacs) and a local one were tested for two years, 2018-19, on the farm of Agriculture faculty at Kabul University. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were collected on achene's yield and other parameters. Analysis revealed a highly significant difference among cultivars for all parameters under study except the number of days to complete emergence, number of plants m-2, plant height and leaf area index. Among the cultivars examined, there were significant differences in achene yield. Local cultivar (4696.92kg ha-1) followed by Robiacs (4346.62 kg ha-1) yielded significantly higher than Imeriacs cultivar (3029). These cultivars have shown to be the best local and exotic genotypes in terms of achene's yield. With additional tastings, these potential lines could be released for specific environments in Afghanistan similar to the Kabul agro-ecology.

Comparison of the Spray Effects of Air Induction Nozzles and Flat Fan Nozzles Installed on Agricultural Drones

Pest control is essential for increasing agricultural production. Agricultural drones with spraying systems for pest control have generated great interest among farmers. However, spraying systems installed on unmanned aerial vehicles, like any other sprayer, can cause damage to the environment due to drift of the agent. Air induction (AI) nozzles are known to produce less drift (e.g., larger spray drops) than other nozzles, but there is a lack of research analyzing their effectiveness in combination with drones. In this study, AI and flat fan nozzles were installed on drones to evaluate their spray and pest control performance. Aerial spraying was conducted on rice and soybeans to measure the coverage and penetration ratio and analyze the crop production as well as the crop damage due to pests and diseases. The drone flight was conducted at an altitude of 3 m and a velocity of 2 m/s. Spray droplets were collected using water-sensitive paper at two heights above the soil surface. The experiments showed that the crop coverage with the AI nozzle was 130% higher than that with the flat fan nozzle. The drift reduction of AI nozzles increased the coverage of spray droplets. But the difference in the penetration ratios, which is the ratio of agents to be delivered inside the crop, was not significant between the nozzles. Also, there was no significant difference in crop yield and pest control efficacy. Consequently, the performance of the AI nozzle did not show differences from that of the XR nozzle, except for coverage. However, the AI nozzle raised less drift, so it should be considered for use in aerial control.

Annual Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) Growth Response to Nitrogen in a Sandy Soil Amended with Acidified Manure and Municipal Sludge after “Quick Wash” Treatment

The Quick Wash (QW) treatment extracts phosphorus (P) from manure and municipal sludge (MS), producing an organic acidified by-product with adequate nitrogen (N):P ratio to meet crop N requirements. Yet, data on crop response to N using QW by-products are lacking. We evaluated the response of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and potential N leaching in sandy soil to N applications using raw wastes, their corresponding QW by-products, and ammonium sulfate (AMS) fertilizer. Treatments included a control (no amendment added), raw and acid-washed chicken litter, dairy and swine manure, MS, and AMS at 100, 200, and 400 kg N ha−1. We found no significant differences in annual ryegrass yield and N uptake between the raw and acidified organic QW by-products. However, ryegrass produced 4–30% more biomass with AMS than organic amendments. The total residual soil inorganic N under AMS treatments ranged between 6.3 and 67.9 mg pot−1 and accounted for 5–17% of the total N applied, but it was <1% for all the organic amendments. We found no differences in soil N leaching between raw and acid-washed forms of each organic soil amendment. Our results indicated that acidified organic QW by-products can improve environmental quality by substantially reducing the amount of applied P with no penalties for crop yield losses compared to raw manure and MS.

Shading Effect of Photovoltaic Panels on Growth of Selected Tropical Vegetable Crops

Solar photovoltaic (PV) has grown rapidly over the years, which has led to land competition between installing PV for generating energy and utilizing land for agriculture to meet rising demand in human population consumption. As a result, agrivoltaic systems have become a promising way to grow food crops and produce electricity at the same time. This research assessed the potential crops that can be planted in a solar park in order to determine the possibility in combining energy and food production on the same land. This study observed growth responses of selected vegetable crops (okra, eggplant, green spinach, Chinese cabbage, Chinese kale, Brazilian spinach and pennywort) planted in the outskirt and row between the solar panels while under the panels, there were three distinct locations assessed: the highest elevated area, moderately inclined area, and the lowest point area. Results showed that light restriction in the highest elevated area under the panels reduced the growth of the okra by 18%, eggplant and Brazilian spinach by 50%, Chinese cabbage by 70%, while green spinach and Chinese kale by 90% yet pennywort grew 52% higher compared to the outskirt area. No significant differences in height and fruit yield for all crops grown between rows and outskirt area. Eggplants, Brazilian spinach and Chinese cabbage favor condition between rows as growth parameters were slightly higher compared to outskirt, while Okra, green spinach and Chinese kale prefer otherwise. Only pennywort performed best under panels of highest elevated area. These results suggest that different crops have distinct preferences on light requirement. Although the solar park was built close to the ground, it is still possible to produce vegetables and this study may pave the way for simultaneous generation of food and energy in tropical climate of Southeast Asian countries.

Effect of microrelief features of tillage methods under different rainfall intensities on runoff and soil erosion in slopes

Tillage methods play a crucial role in controlling rainwater partitioning and soil erosion. This study utilized rainfall simulation experiments to investigate the impact of four tillage methods (manual digging (MD), manual hoeing (MH), traditional ploughing (TP), and ridged ploughing (RP)) on runoff and soil erosion at the plot scale. The smooth slope (SS) was used as a benchmark. Rainfall intensities of 30, 60, 90, and 120 mm h−1 were considered. The study revealed that tillage altered rainwater distribution into depression storage, infiltration, and runoff. Tillage reduces runoff and increases infiltration. The four tillage methods (30–73%) increased the proportion of rainwater converted to infiltration to varying degrees compared to the SS (22–53%). Microrelief features influenced the role of tillage methods in soil erosion. Surface roughness and depression storage accounted for 79% of the variation in sediment yield. The four tillage methods reduced runoff by 2.1–64.7% and sediment yield by 2.5–77.2%. Moreover, increased rainfall intensity weakens the ability of tillage to control soil erosion. When rainfall intensity increased to 120 mm h−1, there was no significant difference in runoff yield among RP, TP, MH, and SS. Therefore, assessing the effectiveness of tillage in reducing soil erosion should consider changes in rainfall intensity. Additionally, the cover management (C) factor of the RUSLE was used to assess the effects of different tillage methods on soil loss. Overall, the C factor values for tilled slopes are in the order MH > TP > RP > MD with a range of 0.23–0.97. As the surface roughness increases, the C factor tends to decrease, and the two are exponential functions (R2 = 0.86). These studies contribute to our understanding of how different tillage methods impact runoff and soil erosion in sloped farmland and provide guidance for selecting appropriate local manual tillage methods.

Experimental study on tar formation during underground coal gasification: Effect of coal rank and gasification pressure on tar yield and chemical composition

The yield and composition of tar depending on coal rank and pressure during underground coal gasification (UCG) were studied. Two coals were used in a series of ex-situ UCG experiments: a Welsh semi-anthracite (Six Feet) and a Polish bituminous coal (Wesoła). Four high-pressure gasification trials under two distinct pressure regimes (20 and 40 bar) were conducted. The tar samples were collected directly from the reactor outlet. The following groups of compounds were analysed by use of gas chromatography (GC-MS): light monoaromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX – benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phenols. A series of gasification experiments revealed significant differences in tar yields and composition depending on the coal rank and gasification pressure. Significant decreases in tar contents were observed with the increase in gasification pressure from 20 to 40 bar for both coals. The total yields of the analysed tar components per kg of gasified coal were 2.58 g and 0.41 g for the experiments conducted on the Six Feet samples at 20 bar and 40 bar, respectively. The corresponding values for the Wesoła coal amounted to 5.48 g and 0.95 g. In all experiments, BTEX was a dominant group of tar components, constituting 69–86 % of the total tar yield within the tested range of compounds. The present study further proves that gasification pressure has a significant effect on the chemical composition of the produced UCG tars for both coal samples under study.

Legacy effects of wheat season organic fertilizer addition on microbial co-occurrence networks, soil function, and yield of the subsequent maize season in a wheat-maize rotation system

Organic fertilizer can alleviate soil degradation. While numerous studies have explored the immediate impacts of organic fertilizer on soil properties and crop production, the legacy effects of organic fertilizer addition remain less understood. This research investigated the subsequent effects of organic fertilizer addition during the winter wheat season on soil microbial community structure, co-occurrence networks, soil function, and summer maize yield from 2018 to 2020. Six fertilization treatments were implemented as chemical nitrogen fertilizer (N) alone or combined sheep manure and nitrogen fertilizer (SMN) at low, medium, and high fertilization levels during the winter wheat season, with only N fertilizer applied during the maize season. The findings revealed significant variations in bacterial and fungal community structures between the SMN and N treatments. The SMN treatments increased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes and decreased the relative abundance of Rokubacteria, Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Chloroflexi, and Nitrospirae compared to the N treatment. The SMN treatments had higher fungal network connectivity and lower mean path distance and modularity than the N treatment, resulting in heightened sensitivity of fungi to environmental changes. The legacy effects of organic fertilizer changed the functional potential of the N and C cycles, with keystone taxa such as Proteobacteria, Actinomycetes, Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Bacteroides, and Ascomycota significantly correlating with functional genes related to the C and N cycles. Surprisingly, no significant differences in summer maize yield occurred between the SMN and N treatments. However, the random forest model revealed that the SMN treatments had significantly higher explanatory power of soil microbial community structure for maize yield (74.31%) than the N treatment (13.07%). These results were corroborated in subsequent studies and underscore the legacy effects of organic fertilizer addition on soil microbial communities. This research offers valuable insights into organic fertilizer use for enhancing soil quality and sustaining agricultural productivity.

Effects of Straw Returning with Lime on SOC and Carbon Pool Management in Acidic Paddy Soil

Soil acidification and low SOC are the main limiting factors in acidic paddy soils. Straw returning with lime is an effective measure to alleviate soil acidification and improve soil fertility; however, its interaction effects on SOC and carbon pool management are still unclear. To investigate the impact of straw returning with lime on the organic carbon pool of acidic paddy soil, field experiments were conducted on acidic paddy soil in Baiyun District and Huiyang District of Guangdong Province. The changes in soil total organic carbon (TOC), water-soluble organic carbon (DOC), active organic carbon (LOC), particulate organic carbon (POC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), carbon pool index (CPI), stable organic carbon (IOC), carbon pool activity (L), carbon pool activity index (CPAI), and carbon pool management index (CPMI) were analyzed under three treatments (CK, conventional fertilization; RS, straw returning+conventional fertilization; RS+L straw returning with lime+conventional fertilization). The results demonstrated that compared with that in CK, the TOC, LOC, POC, and MBC in the RS+L treatment were significantly increased by 10.24%-17.79%, 34.49%-44.37%, 19.27%-23.59%, and 33.36%-43.26%, respectively (P<0.05). Compared with that in CK, the RS+L treatment significantly increased the DOC content during the early growth stage (15-45 days after transplanting) of rice (P<0.05) but had no significant influence on the DOC content during the late growth stage of rice. Compared with that in RS, the TOC, LOC, POC, and MBC in the RS+L treatment were increased by 2.15%-6.95%, 1.17%-17.90%, 4.27%-8.65%, and 12.99%-14.53%, respectively. Compared with that in CK, the RS+L treatment significantly increased IOC and CPI by 8.32%-15.57% and 14.00%-20.00%, respectively (P<0.05). Compared with that in the CK treatment, the RS treatment significantly increased CPI by 14.00%-18.00% (P<0.05). No significant differences in L, CPAI, or CPMI were detected among the different treatments. The soil pH in the RS+L treatment was significantly higher than that in the CK treatment (P<0.05). No significant differences in rice yield were detected among the different treatments. Principal component analysis demonstrated that rice yield was primarily correlated with DOC, LOC, CPAI, and CPMI but its contribution to SOC and carbon pool management index was low. Principal component analysis also indicated that straw returning with lime could improve soil pH and nutrient contents of acidic paddy soil, driving the formation and accumulation of organic carbon fraction such as MBC and POC, thus boosting the increase in SOC. In conclusion, straw returning with lime is beneficial to the accumulation of MBC, POC, LOC, and IOC in acidic paddy soil to improve the content and stability of soil total organic carbon, which is an effective way to improve the carbon sequestration of acidic paddy soil.

Method to predict alloy yield based on multiple raw material conditions and a PSO-LSTM network

The production of ferroalloys accounts for a large proportion of the total energy consumption of the steelmaking industry. Accurately predicting alloy element yields is the key to reducing alloy waste, but there are significant differences in alloy yield under different conditions using ferroalloy raw materials during steelmaking. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-model alloy element yield prediction method based on a particle swarm optimization (PSO) hyperparameter-optimized long short-term memory (LSTM) network and raw material condition classification. The accuracy of the PSO-LSTM prediction model was verified through simulations and was significantly higher than that of other network models when using the same raw material conditions. The average absolute error of predictions using raw materials with a low drum index was 0.4485, and it was 0.6162 under a high drum index, which was significantly lower than that (0.7077) under the condition without classification. This demonstrates the rationality of classifying working conditions according to the raw material conditions of ferroalloys. In addition, this paper combines the prediction model with a linear programming algorithm to develop a ferroalloy operating system and uses it in a steel plant to guide workers to complete an alloying operation. After four months of industrial testing, the internal control rate of finished steel composition increased from 91–94 % to 95–98 %. According to statistical analysis, the optimized HRB400E threaded steel consumed 1.23 kg less silicon-manganese per ton of steel, reduced the cost of steel alloy per ton by 8.6 yuan, and significantly reduced the waste of ferroalloys during steelmaking.

Canopy Structure, Light Intensity, Temperature and Photosynthetic Performance of Winter Wheat under Different Irrigation Conditions.

A high-quality canopy architecture is central to obtaining high crop yields. A field experiment was carried out at the Wuqiao Experimental Station from 2015 to 2019 under four irrigation schemes (W0, no irrigation after sowing; W1, 75 mm irrigation at jointing stage; W2, 75 mm irrigation at jointing and anthesis stages, respectively; W3, 75 mm irrigation at tillering, jointing and anthesis stages, respectively) to investigate the canopy structure, canopy apparent photosynthesis (CAP), canopy temperature (CT), yield and water use efficiency (WUE). The results showed that increasing irrigation times improved the leaf area index (LAI), non-leaf area index (NLAI) and light interception (LI) of the spike and total canopy but decreased the canopy temperature (CT) after anthesis. The CAP in the W3 treatment was consistently lower than that in the W1 treatment, suggesting lower effective utilization of light energy under the W3 treatment. Increasing irrigation times improved wheat yield, but the W2 treatment had no significant difference in yield compared to the W3 treatment. In addition, the W1 and W2 treatments had higher WUEs. The CT, organ temperature and LI were closely positively associated with each other, but they were all strongly negatively related to the yield. Overall, the W2 treatment was the best irrigation scheme for constructing a reasonable canopy architecture for winter wheat, obtaining more efficient water use and yield in the North China Plain (NCP). CT and organ temperature can be used as proxy parameters to estimate the canopy structure.

EXPRESSION OF CHITINASE AND -1,3-GLUCANASES IN RICE CULTIVARS IN REACTION TO Rhizoctonia solani,THE CAUSAL AGENT OF RICE SHEATH BLIGHT

Fifteen high yielding rice cultivars were screened for their reaction to sheath blight under field as well as semi-controlled conditions inoculated with the pathogen Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn. Expression of two pathogenesis related proteins (PRPs), Chitinase and -1,3-glucanases activities were estimated. Both chitinase and 1,3-glucanase PR proteins activity in terms of specific activity expressed after 72 h of pathogen inoculation was generally higher in tolerant cultivars (NLR 145, MTU 1061, NLR 3238, MTU 1153) including checks (TETEP and MTU 1001) as compared to control (MTU 7029) and other susceptible cultivars. The presence of a 33 kDachitinase and 32 kDa and -1,3-glucanase proteins was revealed by western blot analysis, across all the rice cultivars following Rhizoctonia solani infection. No significant grain yield difference in relation to the expression of PRPs was observed across the test rice cultivars.

Grazing summer cover crops mix impact on carbon[sbnd]nitrogen cycling, soil water, and wheat yields

Summer fallow practice is common in the US semiarid Southern Great Plains ecoregion. Its primary objective is to store water to enhance winter wheat production for grain and grazing. Prior research on replacing fallow with legume cover crops (CC) (green manure) reported a yield loss through soil moisture depletion for winter wheat. Recent research has shown the potential of grass CC to enhance soil physical properties compared to legume CC. Cost-benefit analyses of CC make it difficult to justify their adoption. Grazing, however, offers an opportunity to mitigate CC costs. The impact of a grazed CC mix on stored soil water, CN cycling, intercropping, and wheat yields was evaluated. Although CC used soil moisture early in the growing season and nitrate+nitrite-N, they recharged soil moisture by the critical wheat seeding and dormancy-breaking periods. In the summer of 2014, net mineralization in CC increased nitrate+nitrite-N by 10-fold compared to 2013 concentrations, resulting in no significant differences in yields in 2015. Nitrate+nitrite-N was reduced by 28% in 2015 compared to the preceding year due to CC growth and net nitrate+nitrite-N immobilization in residues, resulting in 25% less yield in CC treatments in 2016 compared to no-till (NT) fallow. Grazed and ungrazed CC enhanced organic N by up to four times that in NT fallow and sequestered particulate organic N and C by 7–17% and 6–10%, respectively, in micro-aggregates. Despite reducing biomass by 56%, grazing did not differ from most ungrazed measured soil parameters, offering the potential for mitigating CC production costs.

Effects of Bacillus thuringiensis, Beauveria bassiana, Neem, and a Tomato Intercrop on Diamondback Moth (Plutella xylostella L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) in Tharaka-Nithi County, Kenya

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is an important crop in Kenya, ranked 3rd among the exotic vegetables. Diamondback moth (DBM) is a major cabbage pest that can cause a 100% loss in yield if not well managed. Farmers indiscriminately use synthetic pesticides associated with environmental, health, and pest resistance concerns to manage the DBM. To increase the availability of technologies for effective management of DBM in Kenya, three biopesticides; BioPower (Beauveria bassiana 1.0 x 108 CFUs/g), Dipel DF® (Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki), Neemraj Super 3000 (Azadirachtin 0.3% EC), and a tomato intercrop were evaluated. Cabbages (30 plants) spaced at 40 cm x 60 cm were established in 6 m x 6 m plots in 3 replicates per treatment. The treatments applications were; B. bassiana 100 g/20 L, B. thuringiensis 20 g/20 L, and neem 20 mL/20 L. A row of tomato intercrop was established in every two rows of cabbage and distilled water was used on the untreated control. Data on the number of damaged leaves, live larvae, and marketable yields for two seasons was collected from five leaves of ten randomly selected cabbage plants. Results showed significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) between the control and treatments in the mean number of live larvae and the number of damaged leaves. However, there were no significant marketable yield differences between the treatments (P ≥ 0.05). In conclusion, the three bio-pesticides and the tomato intercrop were effective against the DBM damage on cabbage leaves and can be part of integrated pest management (IPM) packages for DBM management on cabbage. There is a need to determine why the treatments did not result in meaningful outcomes against the DBM population and cabbage head weights. In addition, a cost-benefit analysis of each treatment is necessary.

Surgeon, Pathologist and Pathology Technician Effects on Nodal Yield after a Neck Dissection

A minimum nodal count of 18 lymph nodes has been associated with improved survival after neck dissection and has been suggested as a head and neck cancer quality metric. Despite its critical importance, factors affecting nodal yield are poorly studied. In particular, the relative contribution of surgeons, pathologists, and pathology technicians has not been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to understand both patient and provider related factors that affect nodal yield after neck dissection for patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC). This retrospective cohort study involved review of all adult patients with OCSCC undergoing primary neck dissection between 2000-2020 at an academic medical center. The outcome of interest was a continuous variable denoting the number of nodes removed per side during neck surgery. Surgeon and pathologist year of experience were calculated and represented in quartiles. A multilevel multivariable linear regression model was used to assess the association of surgeon/pathologist experience quartiles with nodal yield, controlling for patient age, comorbidity index, previous cancer, tumor grade, and clinical nodal status. The 508 patients included in our cohort were treated by 5 surgeons and 6 pathologists and involved 44 pathology technicians. Of these patients, 310 (61.0%) were male with a mean age of 63. Oral tongue primary tumors were 46.7% of the cohort, while 64.4% of patients had cT1-T2 tumors, and 65.2% were cN0. The mean nodal yield was 24.2 nodes. The ANOVA analysis revealed significant difference in mean nodal yield by surgeon (p-value = 0.03), pathologist (p-value<0.01) and pathology technician (p-value = 0.037). After accounting for patient-level characteristics and patient clustering by surgeon, increasing surgeon experience was found to be significantly associated with a higher nodal yield (joint significance of surgeon years of experience quartiles < 0.01). Specifically, when compared to surgeons with the least experience (1st quartile), those whose years of experience fell into the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quartile removed 4.69 (95% CI: 0.97 to 7.92), 4.47 (95% CI: 0.33 to 7.87), and 7.37 (95% CI: 0.73 to 11.27) more lymph nodes. Meanwhile, there was no association between pathologist experience and nodal yield (joint significance of pathologist years of experience quartiles = 0.27). Additionally, previous cancer diagnosis and cN0 disease were significantly associated with lower nodal yield (all p-values = 0.02). This study demonstrates an independent association between increasing surgeon experience and higher nodal yields. Importantly, it also demonstrates that pathologists and pathology technicians contribute to the variation in nodal yield, and their contribution should not be overlooked in the implementation of a lymph node yield-based quality metric.

Yield and nutritional responses of quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) genotypes to irrigated, rainfed, and drought-stress environments

This study aimed to select higher-yielding and drought-tolerant quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) lines suitable for cultivation in the U.S. Midwest, where water scarcity poses a common challenge for crop production. Quinoa, known as a superfood and climate-smart crop, is rich in nutrients, possesses resilience to abiotic stress, and is ideal for sustainable food production and supporting nutritional security in the face of changing climate conditions. To achieve this goal, 128 quinoa germplasms, collected from the USDA-ARS-GRIN, were evaluated. Among those lines, ten quinoa lines were selected for further assessment and evaluated at four different locations in Missouri, United States. Evaluations were conducted under three environments: irrigated, rainfed, and drought stress, over 2 years (summer of 2021 and 2022). Two of the selected ten lines, Ames13746 and PI614927, produced higher yields across various locations and environments. Remarkably, these lines demonstrated significantly higher grain yields under drought stress compared to irrigated and rainfed conditions. However, there was no significant difference in grain yield between irrigated and rainfed environments. Notably, despite the presence of moisture stress, the concentration of essential amino acids remained unaffected, while there was a slight decrease in the total protein content under drought-stress conditions. These research results and selected genotypes can potentially facilitate quinoa production in the U.S. Midwest regions prone to water stress, contributing to food security and sustainable agricultural practices.
