Dietary sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) consumption did not attenuate atherosclerosis in low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout mice.

We previously demonstrated the beneficial effects of U.S.-grown sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima), a brown seaweed, on reducing serum triglycerides (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) and protecting against inflammation and fibrosis in the adipose tissue of diet-induced obesity mice. In this current study, we aimed to explore whether the dietary consumption of sugar kelp can prevent atherosclerosis using low-density lipoprotein receptor knockout (Ldlr KO) mice fed an atherogenic diet. Eight-week-old male Ldlr KO mice were fed either an atherogenic high-fat/high-cholesterol control (HF/HC) diet or a HF/HC diet supplemented with 6% (w/w) sugar kelp (HF/HC-SK) for 16 weeks. Consumption of sugar kelp significantly increased the body weight gain without altering fat mass and lean mass. Also, there were no significant differences in energy expenditure and physical activities between the groups. The two groups did not show significant differences in serum and hepatic TG and TC levels or the hepatic expression of genes involved in cholesterol and lipid metabolism. Although serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity did not differ significantly between the two groups, there were significant increases in the expression of macrophage markers, including adhesion G protein-coupled receptor E1 and cluster of differentiation 68, as well as tumor necrosis factor alpha in the HF/HC-SK group compared to the HF/HC mice. The consumption of sugar kelp did not elicit a significant effect on the development of aortic lesions. Moreover, lipopolysaccharide-stimulated splenocytes isolated from HF/HC-SK-fed mice showed no significant changes in the mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory genes compared with those from the HF/HC mice. In summary, the consumption of dietary sugar kelp did not elicit anti-atherogenic and hepatoprotective effects in Ldlr KO mice.

Sonochemical oxidation activity in 20-kHz probe-type sonicator systems: The effects of probe positions and vessel sizes

The 20-kHz probe-type sonicator systems were investigated for the enhancement of the cavitational oxidation activity under various geometric conditions including vertical and horizontal probe positions and vessel sizes/volumes as a following study to our previous study. The sonochemical oxidation activity (mass-based I3- ion generation rate) increased significantly for all vessel size conditions as the probe was placed close to the vessel bottom, owing to the expansion of the sonochemical active zone induced by the reflections of ultrasound at the bottom and the reactor wall. A concentric circular active zone is observed at positions close to the bottom. The highest sonochemical activity was obtained at 1 cm (vertical position) in the 20 cm vessels (input power: 50 %). At the vertical positions of 11 cm to 7 cm, no significant difference in the sonochemical activity was observed for all input power conditions (25, 50, and 75 %) because no meaningful reflections occurred. Higher sonochemical activities were obtained at an input power of 75 % owing to the increased power and strong reflection. The highest cavitational yield considering the energy efficiency was obtained at 6 cm (vertical position) for 75 % of all power and geometric conditions. Horizontal probe position tests showed that the asymmetric formation of the sonochemical active zone could significantly enhance the sonochemical activity. The highest activity was obtained at 1 cm (vertical position) and 2.5 cm (horizontal position) in the 20 cm vessel.

Comparable efficacy of oral bendamustine versus intravenous administration in treating hematologic malignancies.

The purpose of this study was to analyze potential differences in antitumor efficacy and pharmacokinetics between intravenous (IV) bendamustine and a novel orally administered (PO) bendamustine agent that is utilizing the beneficial properties of superstaturated solid dispersions formulated in nanoparticles. Pharmacokinetics of IV versus PO bendamustine were determined by analysis of plasma samples collected from NSG mice treated with either IV or PO bendamustine. Plasma samples were analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry following a liquid-liquid extraction to determine peak bendamustine concentration, area under the concentration-time curve, and the half-life in-vivo. In-vitro cytotoxicity of bendamustine against human non-Hodgkin Burkitt's Lymphoma (Raji), multiple myeloma (MM.1s), and B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (RS4;11) cell lines was determined over time using MTS assays. Luciferase-tagged versions of the aforementioned cell lines were used to determine in-vivo bendamustine cytotoxicity of IV versus PO bendamustine at two different doses. Bendamustine at a high dose in-vitro causes cell death. There was no significant difference in antitumor activity between IV and novel PO bendamustine at a physiologically relevant concentration in all three xenograft models. In-vivo pharmacokinetics showed the oral bioavailability of bendamustine in mice to be 51.4%. The novel oral bendamustine agent tested exhibits good oral bioavailability and systemic exposure for in-vivo antitumor efficacy comparable to IV bendamustine. An oral bendamustine formulation offers exciting clinical potential as an additional method of administration for bendamustine and warrants further evaluation in clinical studies.

Evaluation of the metabolic activity of the torn rotator cuff muscles by 18 F-2-deoxy- d -glucose PET-computed tomography scan.

Fatty atrophy and fatty infiltration have been considered as limiting factors for rotator cuff repair. The metabolic activity of the muscle can be measured noninvasively by PET. In our study, we aim to compare the metabolic activity between the shoulders with rotator cuff tears and normal shoulders. All the patients with unilateral full-thickness rotator cuff tears were included. The patients were divided into two groups based on fatty atrophy and the metabolic activities of the rotator cuff muscles, trapezius, and deltoid were calculated using an 18 F-2-deoxy- d -glucose PET-computed tomography scan for comparison. A total of 17 patients were included. The standardized uptake values were compared between the affected shoulder and the normal shoulders. There was a significant increase in uptake in the insertion sites and musculotendinous junctions in the rotator cuff torn group. The standardized uptake values showed no significant difference between the low-grade and high-grade groups. Our first hypothesis was also proven wrong; when we found that there was no statistically significant difference in the metabolic activity in muscle bellies of normal shoulders and those with rotator cuff tears. Our second hypothesis was proven wrong when found that there was no statistically significant difference in the metabolic activities of rotator cuff muscles between high-grade and low-grade fatty atrophy groups. The metabolic activities of the middle deltoid and trapezius are inversely related. Based on the findings of our study, fatty atrophy or fatty infiltration alone cannot be considered a limiting factor for rotator cuff repair.

Anti-Inflammatory, Wound Healing, and Anti-Diabetic Effects of Pure Active Compounds Present in the Ryudai Gold Variety of Curcuma longa.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) contains curcumin, demethoxycurcumin (DMC), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BDMC). Nevertheless, curcumin is the most researched active ingredient for its numerous pharmacological effects. We investigated the impact of these curcuminoids found in Ryudai gold, an approved cultivar of Curcuma longa, on wound healing, inflammation, and diabetes. Sub-planter injections of carrageenan induced acute paw inflammation in rats. The wound-healing ability of 1% curcuminoids was examined by making a 6 mm round wound on the shaved dorsum of the mice with a biopsy punch. A single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg) was used to induce diabetes in mice. Curcuminoids at a dose rate of 100 mg/kg body weight were used with feed and as a gastric gavage to treat diabetes and inflammation in experimental animals. Paw thickness was measured at 1, 3, and 6 h following carrageenan injection. After three hours, mean paw volume was 58% in carrageenan-injected mice, which was 35%, 37%, and 31% in the curcumin, DMC, and BDMC groups, respectively. Histopathology of the paw tissue demonstrated severe infiltration of inflammatory cells and thickening of the dermis, which were remarkably improved by the curcuminoids. The wound-healing abilities were significantly higher in the curcumin- (95.0%), DMC- (93.17%), and BDMC-treated (89.0%) groups, in comparison to that of the control (65.09%) group at day nine. There were no significant differences in wound-healing activity among the groups treated with 1% curcuminoids throughout the study. Streptozotocin-induced diabetes was characterized by an increased blood glucose (552.2 mg/dL) and decreased body weight (31.2 g), compared to that of the control rats (145.6 mg/dL and 46.8 g blood glucose and body weight, respectively). It also caused an increase in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT; 44.2 U/L) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST; 55.8 U/L) compared to that of the control group (18.6 U/L and 20.1 U/L, respectively). Histopathological examination of the liver showed that diabetes caused hepatic cellular necrosis, congestion of the central vein, and parenchymatous degeneration. However, all three curcuminoids significantly decreased blood glucose levels, ALT, and AST and improved the histopathological score of the liver. These results evidenced that not only curcumin but also DMC and BDMC have potent anti-inflammatory, wound healing, and anti-diabetic efficacy, and the Ryudai gold variety of turmeric could be used as a functional food supplement.

Analysis on Silica and Graphene Nanomaterials Obtained From Rice Straw for Antimicrobial Potential

This study focuses on the encapsulation of silica and graphene nanoparticles and their potential applications. The encapsulation enhances the properties and effectiveness of these nanoparticles, with silica providing stability and graphene contributing to high surface area and electrical conductivity. Characterization of silica-graphene nanoparticles was conducted using various techniques including High Power Microscope (HPM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and 3D Nano Profiler. The antimicrobial activity of silica, graphene, and silica-graphene nanoparticles was evaluated using a disc diffusion assay against E. coli and B. subtilis at varying concentrations. Results showed significant antimicrobial activity, with the inhibition zone being directly proportional to the concentration. Silica-graphene nanoparticles demonstrated higher efficacy against E. coli compared to B. subtilis, attributed to differences in cell wall structure. Statistical analysis using ANOVA confirmed significant differences in antimicrobial activity among the tested components.

Using phosphonic acid monolayers to control CO2 adsorption and hydrogenation onPt/Al2O3

Phosphonic acid (PA) self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) were deposited onto Pt/Al2O3 catalysts to enable control over CO2 adsorption and CO2 hydrogenation activity. Significant differences in catalytic activity toward CO2 hydrogenation (reverse water‐gas shift, RWGS) were observed after coating Al2O3 with PAs, suggesting that the reaction was mediated by CO2adsorption on the support. Amine‐functionalized PAs were found to outperform their alkyl counterparts in terms of activity, however there was little effect of amine location in the SAM (i.e., spacing between the amine functional group and phosphonate attachment group). One amine‐PA and one alkyl‐PA, aminopropyl phosphonic acid (C3NH2PA) and methyl phosphonic acid (C1PA), respectively, were investigated in more detail. The C3NH2PA‐modified catalyst was found to bind CO2 as a combination of carbamate and bicarbonate. Additionally, at 30 °C, both PAs were found to reduce CO2 adsorption uptake by approximately 50% compared to unmodified 5%Pt/Al2O3. CO2 adsorption enthalpy was measured for the catalysts and found to be strongly correlated with hydrogenation activity, with the trend in binding enthalpy and CO2 hydrogen rate trending as uncoated > C3NH2PA > C1PA. PA SAMs were found to have weaker effects on CO binding and CO selectivity, consistent with selective modification of the Al2O3support by the PAs.

Neuroimaging evaluation of the long term impact of a novel paired meditation practice on brain function.

A growing number of advanced neuroimaging studies have compared brain structure and function in long term meditators to non-meditators. The goal is to determine if there may be long term effects on the brain from practicing meditation. In this paper, we present new data on the long term effects of a novel meditation practice in which the focus is on clitoral stimulation. The findings from such a study have implications for potential therapeutic uses with regard to various neurological or psychiatric conditions. We evaluated the cerebral glucose metabolism in 40 subjects with an extended history (>1 year of practice, 2-3 times per week) performing the meditation practice called Orgasmic Meditation (OM) and compared their brains to a group of non-meditating healthy controls (N = 19). Both meditation and non-meditation subjects underwent brain PET after injection with 148 to 296 MBq of FDG using a standard imaging protocol. Resting FDG PET scans of the OM group were compared to the resting scans of healthy, non-meditating, controls using statistical parametric mapping. The OM group showed significant differences in metabolic activity at rest compared to the controls. Specifically, there was significantly lower metabolism in select areas of the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes, as well as the anterior cingulate, insula, and thalamus, in the OM group compared to the controls. In addition, there were notable distinctions between the males and females with the females demonstrating significantly lower metabolism in the thalamus and insula. Overall, these findings suggest that the long term meditation practitioners of OM have different patterns of resting brain metabolism. Since these areas of the brain in which OM practitioners differ from controls are involved in cognition, attention, and emotional regulation, such findings have implications for understanding how this meditation practice might affect practitioners over long periods of time.

Fabrication of a coral-like barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coating and its effect on promoting osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in vitro

Objective: To investigate the biocompatibility of coral-like barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coatings and the influence of ultrasound-excited piezoelectric effect on the early osteogenic differentiation. Methods: The barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coating (the coating group) was prepared on the surface of titanium metal by anodic oxidation, hydrothermal reaction and high-temperature annealing, and polished titanium specimens were used as control group. The surface morphology, composition, and crystal phase and hydrophilicity of the two groups of titanium specimens were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and contact angle meter. The piezoelectric properties of the materials were characterized by piezoresponse force microscopy. Rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSC) were cultured and identified and seeded the surface of titanium specimens in two groups. The cells seeded on blank culture plates were used as blank group. After low intensity pulsed ultrasound intervention, cell proliferation and live/dead staining were detected to evaluate cytocompatibility of the coatings. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of each group was detected by ALP staining kit, and the expression of osteogenesis-related genes [integrin, bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2), Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2)] was detected by real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) to evaluate the effect of the coating on promoting the early osteogenic differentiation of BMSC. Results: The surface of titanium specimens in the coating group showed a uniform coral-like morphology, and the diameter of the coral tentacles was 70-100 nm. The main component was tetragonal barium titanate. The surface hydrophilicity of the coating group (water contact angle 10.12°± 0.93°) was significantly better than that of the control group (water contact angle 78.32°±0.71°) (F= 10 165.91, P<0.001). The coating has a stable piezoelectric property with a piezoelectric constant of about 5 pC/N. Cell experiments showed that, with or without ultrasound, the cell proliferation activity of the coating group was significantly lower than that of the blank group and the control group on the third day (P<0.05). On the fifth day, with or without ultrasound, there was no significant difference in cell proliferation activity between the three groups (P>0.05). After 7 days of culture, the ALP activity of the coating group was significantly higher than that of the blank group and the control group (P<0.05). The results of RT-qPCR showed that the mRNA expression of integrin and BMP-2 in the coating group with ultrasound was significantly higher than that in the other groups with ultrasound, and was higher than that of the coating group without ultrasound (P<0.05). The expression of integrin mRNA in the control group with ultrasound was significantly higher than that in the control group without ultrasound (P<0.05). The expression of RUNX2 mRNA in the coating group with ultrasound was significantly higher than that in the coating group without ultrasound (P<0.05). Conclusions: The coral-like barium titanate nano-piezoelectric coating exhibits favorable biocompatibility and stable piezoelectric property, and facilitates the early osteogenic differentiation of BMSC under the excitation of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound.

Antibacterial Activity Of Toothpaste Formulation Containing Spirulina platensis Extract Against Streptococcus mutans

Background: The main bacteria involved in the formation of dental caries is Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). One approach to reduce the growth of S. mutans bacterial colonies is by brushing teeth with toothpaste containing antibacterial agent. The commonly used antibacterial agent is chlorhexidine, which is the gold standard chemical in reducing the colonization of S. mutans bacteria and other oral biofilms. However, over time, it causes various side effects, thus necessitating the search for alternative natural ingredients. One of potential ingredient with antibacterial agent is the Spirulina platensis, which contains secondary metabolites known to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Thus, Spirulina platensis can be added to toothpaste as an antibacterial agent. Method: This study employed an experimental laboratory design with a post-test-only control group design. The study consisted of 7 treatments with 5 replications. Antibacterial activity was tested using the agar diffusion method by observing the average diameter of the inhibition zone formed. Data were analyzed using parametric one-way ANOVA. Discussion and Results: In this study, toothpaste with Spirulina platensis extract at concentrations of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 3% can inhibited the growth of S. mutans with average inhibition zone diameters of 20.4 mm, 20.8 mm, 21.8 mm, 22.3 mm, and 22.7 mm. The one-way ANOVA parametric test results showed a value of p0.05, indicating a significant difference in the antibacterial activity of S. mutans in all treatment groups. Conclusion: Toothpaste formulations with Spirulina platensis extract have antibacterial activity against S. mutans bacteria.

Efficacy of ozonated olive oil against peri-implant microbes isolated from peri-implantitis.

This study aimed to investigate the antibacterial and antimicrobial activity of ozone gel against oral biofilms grown on titanium dental implant discs. The experiment used medical grade five titanium discs on which peri-implant isolated biofilms were grown. The experimental groups were control, Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Granulicatella adiacens (G. adiacens), (n = 6). The oral microbes grown on titanium discs were exposed to ozone gel for 3 minutes and the antibacterial activity was assessed by turbidity test and adherence test for the antibiofilm activity test. Bacterial morphology and confluence were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), (n=3). Two bacterial species were identified from the peri-implant sample, S. mutans and G. adiacens. The results showed that adding ozone to the bacterial biofilm on titanium dental implants did not exhibit significant antibacterial activity against S. mutans. Moreover, there was no significant difference in antibiofilm activity between control and treatment groups. However, significant antibacterial and antibiofilm effect was exhibited by ozone gel against G. adiacens. Ozonated olive oil can be considered as a potential antimicrobial agent for disinfecting dental implant surfaces and treating peri-implantitis.

Effects of Pain Relief Through Minimal Exercise Intervention in a Rat Model of Neuropathic Pain.

We aimed to minimize the frequency of exercise intervention and test the efficacy of pain relief. We also investigated the mechanism of neuropathic pain to determine the best frequency of pain relief for neuropathic pain. The chronic constriction injury (CCI) rat model was randomly divided into three groups: exercise (Ex), No-Ex, and normal. The treadmill exercise intervention was administered, and the 50% withdrawal threshold was assessed using the Von Frey Test. Ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1 (IBA1), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), C-C chemokine receptor type 2 (CCR2), and tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) activation was determined through immunohistochemistry. In the brain, we examined the increased expression of β-endorphin/met-enkephalin in the gray matter of the midbrain aqueduct. Co-expression of CCR2, IBA1, and Neu-N was observed in the spinal cord dorsal horn by immunofluorescence staining. The 50% pain response threshold was significantly lower in the Ex group than in the No-Ex group at five weeks post-CCI, indicating a high analgesic effect. In the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, IBA1 and GFAP were significantly decreased in the Ex group than in the No-Ex group at five weeks post-CCI. However, no significant difference in activation of BDNF, CCR2, and TRAF6 was observed. In the midbrain, the Ex group showed a significant increase compared to the No-Ex group. In summary, our results suggest that in minimal-exercise intervention, neuropathic pain relief is achieved by activation of the descending pain inhibitory system in the midbrain.

Psychophysiological and Psychological Responses of Teenage Students Conducting Computer Programming Activities Combined with Horticultural Activities

This study investigated whether coding (computer programming) and horticultural activities alone and combined have psychophysiological and psychological effects. Compulsory computer programming has been required in elementary schools in South Korea since 2018. A total of 34 participants, who were students between the ages of 11 and 16 years were involved in the study. Participants undertook the following activities in random order: connecting components, coding, horticultural activities, and combining coding and horticultural activities (run program, horticultural activities, and coding modifications). Brain waves were measured during the activity, and a subjective self-report evaluation was conducted at the end of each activity. In a spectral edge frequency of 50% of the alpha spectrum band, which indicates a comfortable, stable, and relaxed state, there was a significant difference in the left prefrontal pole when participants performed a combination of coding and horticultural activities (P &lt; 0.001). In addition, there were significant differences in the coding activities based on horticultural activities (P &lt; 0.05, P &lt; 0.001), with a relatively low beta, indicating attention and alertness; relative mid beta, indicating active awareness; ratio of SMR to theta, indicating focused attention; and the ratio of mid beta to theta, indicating concentrated focus. It is judged that activities involving plant engagement can contribute to comfort, stability, focused attention, and positive effects in response to active stimuli. As a result of a subjective evaluation, it was found that horticultural activities had a positive effect on participants’ emotions (P &lt; 0.01). This study demonstrates that horticulture-based coding activities have a positive impact on physiological relaxation and cognitive enhancement, and are also associated with subjectively reported positive emotions.

Sex differences in basal motivated behavior, chronic ethanol drinking, and amygdala activity in female and male mice

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a major public health concern that despite its prevalence, lacks a widely-effective treatment due to the complexity of AUD pathology. AUD is highly comorbid with other psychiatric conditions including anxiety and mood disorders, however it is unclear how these disorders influence each other. The underlying etiology of these comorbidities is difficult to decipher and factors including sex, stress, and the environment further complicate both diagnosis and treatment strategies. To understand more about this bidirectional relationship between AUD and comorbid psychiatric disorders, we ran male and female C57Bl/6j mice through baseline behavioral testing followed by intermittent access-two bottle choice (IA-2BC) drinking. We found no sex differences in basal anxiety-like or depressive-like behavior, however females displayed enhanced motivated feeding behavior. Females consumed more ethanol than males, at both 1hr and 24hr timepoints. Basal affective state did not predict subsequent ethanol intake in either sex, however exploratory behavior was positively correlated with drinking in males but not females. We then re-assessed negative affect behavior following chronic ethanol drinking to determine if drinking impacted subsequent affective behavior and found no relationship between ethanol intake and affective state in males or females. We also examined how chronic ethanol drinking affected central amygdala (CeA) and basolateral amygdala (BLA) neuronal activity in males and females. Ethanol-drinking females had a decrease in CeA neuronal activity, driven by reduced activity in the lateral (CeAl) sub-region, while in males there was no significant difference in CeA activity compared to water controls. Neither males or females had a significant change in BLA neuronal activity following chronic ethanol drinking. Collectively, these results demonstrate sex differences in basal motivated behavior, drinking behavior, and subregion-specific amygdala neuronal activity following chronic ethanol drinking which may inform the sex differences seen in patients diagnosed with AUD and comorbid conditions.

Operando Spectroscopy to Understand Dynamic Structural Changes of Solid Catalysts.

Solid materials like heterogeneous catalysts are highly dynamic and continuously tend to change when exposed to the reaction environment. To understand the catalyst system under true reaction conditions,operando spectroscopy is the key to unravel small changes, which can ultimately lead to a significant difference in catalytic activity and selectivity. This was also the topic of the 7th International Congress on Operando Spectroscopy in Switzerland in 2023. In this article, we discuss various examples to introduce and demonstrate the importance of this area, including examples from emission control for clean air (e.g. CO oxidation), oxidation catalysis in the chemical industry (e.g. oxidation of isobutene), future power-to-X processes (electrocatalysis, CO2 hydrogenation to methanol), and non-oxidative conversion of methane. All of these processes are equally relevant to the chemical industry. Complementary operando techniques such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and Raman spectroscopy were utilized to derive the ultimate structure of the catalyst. The variety of conditions requires distinctly different operando cells that can reach a temperature range of 400-1000 °C and pressures up to 40 bar. The best compromise for both the spectroscopy and the catalytic reaction is needed. As an outlook, we highlight emerging methods such as modulation-excitation spectroscopy (MES) or quick-extended X-ray absorption fine structure (QEXAFS) and X-ray photon in/out techniques, which can provide better sensitivity or extend X-ray based operando studies.

The impact of virtual reality scenes on stress response characteristics of individuals with different personality traits

Virtual reality based physical stress (VRPS) paradigms could eliminate the influence of social factors on participants, and it may be a desirable tool to explore the impact of personality traits on stress levels. In this study, we attempt to explore the effects of VRPS on stress response among individuals with different personality traits. Forty male participants with an average age of 22.79 ± 0.41 years were divided into two groups based on Harm Avoidance (HA) scores of Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ), referred to as the Low-HA group and the High-HA group. The stress levels of the participants were assessed using salivary α-amylase (sAA) activity and heart rate variability (HRV) indices pre- and post-stress. The influence of personality traits on stress response among different groups was analyzed. VRPS significantly affected the sAA activity and HRV indicators of both groups. During and after stress, there were significant differences in sAA activity and HRV indicators between the two groups. The sAA levels and HRV indices of the Low-HA group were lower than those of the High-HA group. Furthermore, sAA levels and HRV indices were correlated with the scores of TPQ. VRPS scenarios elicit different stress responses on individuals with different harm avoidance personality traits. Stress evaluation based on VR scenarios presents potential in personality trait assessments, particularly for distinguishing between individuals with low and high HA tendencies.

Physiological and molecular mechanism of Populus pseudo-cathayana × Populus deltoides response to Hyphantria cunea

Populus pseudo-cathayana × Populus deltoides is a crucial artificial forest tree species in Northeast China. The presence of the fall webworm (Hyphantria cunea) poses a significant threat to these poplar trees, causing substantial economic and ecological damage. This study conducted an insect-feeding experiment with fall webworm on P. pseudo-cathayana × P. deltoides, examining poplar's physiological indicators, transcriptome, and metabolome under different lengths of feeding times. Results revealed significant differences in phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity, total phenolic content, and flavonoids at different feeding durations. Transcriptomic analysis identified numerous differentially expressed genes, including AP2/ERF, MYB, and WRKY transcription factor families exhibiting the highest expression variations. Differential metabolite analysis highlighted flavonoids and phenolic acid compounds of poplar's leaves as the most abundant in our insect-feeding experiment. Enrichment analysis revealed significant enrichment in the plant hormone signal transduction and flavonoid biosynthetic pathways. The contents of jasmonic acid and jasmonoyl-L-isoleucine increased with prolonged fall webworm feeding. Furthermore, the accumulation of dihydrokaempferol, catechin, kaempferol, and naringenin in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway varied significantly among different samples, suggesting their crucial role in response to pest infestation. These findings provide novel insights into how poplar responds to fall webworm infestation.

Effect of Macro and Microalgae Addition on Nutritional, Physicochemical, Sensorial, and Functional Properties of a Vegetable Cream.

Algae are a booming resource in the food industry due to their several health benefits. This study assesses the impact of the combined use of selected macro- and microalgae to improve the nutritional profile and the labeling of a vegetable cream by the introduction of nutrition and health claims. As macroalgae, two Ascophyllum nodosum L., one natural (An) and one smoked (AnS), were selected for their high iodine concentration and flavor notes. A new strain of Chlorella vulgaris, golden (CvG), was selected as the microalgae, which is rich in proteins and has a neutral sensorial profile (golden color and mild flavor). In this study, two vegetable creams were compared. The control (CTRL) versus one enriched with a mixture of macroalgae and microalgae (CV-AN). Sensory, physicochemical, and functional properties of both vegetable creams were evaluated. The bioactivity assessed was the effect of iodine as a health claim and antioxidant and antihypertensive properties. CV-AN vegetable cream showed significantly higher values (p < 0.05) for protein content, iodine value, and antioxidant activity, with no significant differences (p > 0.05) in antihypertensive activity or sensory panel. The incorporation of these algae resulted in a vegetable cream with a better nutritional profile and sensory acceptability comparable to the control, offering protein and iodine source claims in the labeling.

Lactobacillus acidophilus VB1 co-aggregates and inhibits biofilm formation of chronic otitis media-associated pathogens.

This study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Lactobacillus acidophilus, alone and in combination with ciprofloxacin, against otitis media-associated bacteria. L. acidophilus cells were isolated from Vitalactic B (VB), a commercially available probiotic product containing two lactobacilli species, L. acidophilus and Lactiplantibacillus (formerly Lactobacillus) plantarum. The pathogenic bacterial samples were provided by Al-Shams Medical Laboratory (Baqubah, Iraq). Bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing for 16 antibiotics were performed using the VITEK2 system. The minimum inhibitory concentration of ciprofloxacin was also determined. The antimicrobial activity of L. acidophilus VB1 cell-free supernatant (La-CFS) was evaluated alone and in combination with ciprofloxacin using a checkerboard assay. Our data showed significant differences in the synergistic activity when La-CFS was combined with ciprofloxacin, in comparison to the use of each compound alone, against Pseudomonas aeruginosa SM17 and Proteus mirabilis SM42. However, an antagonistic effect was observed for the combination against Staphylococcus aureus SM23 and Klebsiella pneumoniae SM9. L. acidophilus VB1 was shown to significantly co-aggregate with the pathogenic bacteria, and the highest co-aggregation percentage was observed after 24h of incubation. The anti-biofilm activities of CFS and biosurfactant (BS) of L. acidophilus VB1 were evaluated, and we found that the minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration that inhibits 50% of bacterial biofilm (MBIC50) of La-CFS was significantly lower than MBIC50 of La-BS against the tested pathogenic bacterial species. Lactobacillus acidophilus, isolated from Vitane Vitalactic B capsules, demonstrated promising antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities against otitis media pathogens, highlighting its potential as an effective complementary/alternative therapeutic strategy to control bacterial ear infections.

Activity of propyl-propane-thiosulfinate and propyl-propane-thiosulfonate against carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

Organosulfur compounds derived from plants of the Allium genus, such as propyl-propane-thiosulfinate (PTS) and propyl-propane-thiosulfonate (PTSO), have been proposed as an alternative in antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to compare the activity of these substances with other antibiotics against clinical isolates of carbapenem-resistant (CAR-R) and carbapenem-susceptible (CAR-S) Gram-negative bacteria. A total of 126 clinical isolates of CAR-R and 155 CAR-S bacteria were selected, including Enterobacterales, A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa. The antibiotic susceptibility of all isolates was assessed using the microdilution and Kirby-Bauer methods for PTS, PTSO, amoxicillin/clavulanate, piperacillin/tazobactam, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, cefepime, imipenem, ciprofloxacin, and amikacin. Both PTS and PTSO demonstrated in vitro bactericidal activity against CAR-R Enterobacteriaceae and A. baumannii, with no significant difference in activity compared to their response against CAR-S isolates. However, both compounds were less active against P. aeruginosa than against any of the other bacteria, regardless of their resistance to carbapenems. In all cases, the minimum inhibitory concentration values of PTSO were significantly lower than those of PTS. These findings offer valuable information about the potential antibacterial use of these substances, particularly against infections that currently have limited therapeutic options.
