Moderating Role of Self-Control Between Anger-Youth Violence Relationship

This study is designed to test whether low self-control moderates the relationship between anger and violent behavior of youth. To that aim, two waves of panel data from the Korean Youth Panel Survey were employed ( N = 3132) to estimate the moderating effect of low self-control between anger and violent behavior by youth. The results suggested that aggressive youth with low self-control are more likely to engage in violent behavior, and low self-control is found to exert significant conditional effects on the relationship between anger and violent behavior of youth.

Intrasession Caffeine Intake and Cycling Performance After Accumulated Work: A Field-Based Study.

Preexercise caffeine intake has proven to exert ergogenic effects on cycling performance. However, whether these benefits are also observed under fatigue conditions remains largely unexplored. We aimed to assess the effect of caffeine ingested during prolonged cycling on subsequent time-trial performance in trained cyclists. The study followed a triple-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled cross-over design. Eleven well-trained junior cyclists (17 ± 1years) performed a field-based 8-min time trial under "fresh" conditions (i.e.,after their usual warm-up) or after two work-matched steady-state cycling sessions (total energy expenditure∼20kJ/kg and ∼100min duration). During the latter sessions, participants consumed caffeine (3mg/kg) or a placebo ∼60min before the time trial. We assessed power output, heart rate, and rating of perceived exertion during the time trial and mood state (Brunel Mood Scale) before and after each session. No significant condition effect was found for the mean power output attained during the time trial (365 ± 25, 369 ± 31, and 364 32W for "fresh," caffeine, and placebo condition, respectively; p = .669). Similar results were found for the mean heart rate (p = .100) and rating of perceived exertion (p = 1.000) during the time trial and for the different mood domains (all p > .1). Caffeine intake during prolonged exercise seems to exert no ergogenic effects on subsequent time-trial performance in junior cyclists. Future studies should determine whether significant effects can be found with larger caffeine doses or after greater fatigue levels.

Combined role of PEAR1 and GP genes in the mechanism of aspirin resistance and its clinical significance

Exploring the mechanism of aspirin resistance helps to improve the prevention and treatment of ischemic stroke diseases and reduce the interference of resistance mechanism on the therapeutic effect of aspirin. In this paper, the Affiliated Hospital of Beihua university, together with two other hospitals, was chosen as the research unit, from which 260 AIS patients were selected for aspirin resistance study. The joint role of PEAR1 gene and GP gene in the mechanism of aspirin resistance was discussed by genotyping, TEG assay, univariate analysis, and binary logistic analysis methods. Among the GP1BA genes in AIS patients, the frequency of CC-type genes was as high as 92.03%, and the risk of aspirin resistance was significantly increased in CC-type relative to TT-type. The incidence of rs5924 allele T was significantly higher in the AR group than in the AS group (OR = 1.632, p = 0.006), and there was a significant effect of diabetic conditions on aspirin resistance at the 1% level. Diabetes significantly inhibits plasma proteins in AIS patients and makes aspirin less inhibitory to platelets. Therefore, clarifying the influence of PEAR1 and GP genes in the mechanism of aspirin resistance can be used to obtain the precise loci from the gene therapy point of view to enhance the disease treatment effect of aspirin.

Immersive Virtual Reality to Reduce Pain and Anxiety in Individuals Undergoing Orthopedic Surgery for Acute Trauma: A Randomized Clinical Trial

ABSTRACT Controlling acute pain for individuals undergoing orthopedic surgery is highly desirable as it is related to various treatment outcomes. Immersive, virtual reality hypnosis (VRH) is one potential treatment modality to aid in pain management. This three-arm, randomized clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of two hypnosis interventions for reducing post-surgical pain and anxiety in addition to evaluating the effects on sleep quality, mental health, and physical functioning. Results indicated no statistically significant main effects associated with intervention groups for pre-post change scores of pain intensity (F(3, 177) = 0.35, p = .71, partial η2 = .004), anxiety (F(3, 177) = 0.20, p = .81, partial η2 = .002) or sleep quality (F(3, 175) = 0.81, p = .45, partial η2 = .009). Additionally, there were no statistically significant group effects of treatment condition on mental health (F(2, 162) = .71, p = .49, η2 = .009) or physical functioning (F(2, 165) = .43, p = .65, η2 = .005). Issues and future directions for this line of research are discussed.

Effects of behavioral interventions on stress reactivity in adults with substance use disorders.

Heightened reactivity to stress is associated with poor treatment outcome in people with substance use disorders (SUDs). Behavioral strategies can reduce stress reactivity; however, these strategies are understudied in people with SUDs. The objective of this study was to test the effect of two behavioral strategies (cognitive reappraisal and affect labeling) on stress reactivity in people with SUDs. Treatment-seeking adults with SUDs (N = 119) were randomized to receive brief training in cognitive reappraisal, affect labeling, or a psychoeducational control, followed by a standardized stress induction. Markers of stress reactivity were collected before and following stress induction and included self-reported negative affect and substance craving, as well as salivary cortisol, and skin conductance response. Analyses of covariance did not indicate a significant effect of treatment condition on negative affect, cortisol, or skin conductance response. Participants in the affect labeling condition had greater increase in craving than those in the cognitive reappraisal condition; neither condition differed from control. Results indicated that, although participants were able to implement behavioral skills following a brief training, training condition did not modify stress reactivity, on average, relative to control. Future directions include consideration of individual differences in response to training and determination of whether higher "dosing" of skills via multiple sessions or extended practice is needed to influence stress reactivity in people with SUDs. Moderating effect of entrepreneurial self-efficacy on the strength of the mediated relationship between networking capabilities and SME performance via entrepreneurial competencies

The purpose of this study was determine the effect of networking capabilities on firm performance while controlling for entrepreneurial competencies, to determined the moderating effect of entrepreneurial self-efficacy on the relationship between entrepreneurial competencies and SME performance and ultimatrely to establish the moderating effect of entrepreneurial self-efficacy on the strength of the mediated relationship between networking capabilities and Small and Mediam Enterprises (SME) performance via entrepreneurial competencies. The study sdopted the positivist research philosophy asserting the existence of an objective reality that can be quantified, offering both explanatory and predictive capabilities. The research adopted an explanatory research design. Hayes Model 4 and 59 process Macro approach was used to analyse data and test the hypotheses. The results showed that networking capabilities had a significant direct effect on firm performance. The study also revealed that the interaction of entrepreneurial self- efficacy between the entrepreneurial competencies and firm performance was significant. Ultimately, the study determined the conditional indirect effect of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy (ESE) on the strength of the mediated relationship between networking capabilities and SME performance via entrepreneurial competencies. The study concluded that positive and significant moderated mediation analysis was evident. More importantly, the conditional indirect effect was much stronger with firms having lower levels of ESE. The study concluded that entrepreneurial self-efficacy has significant conditional indirect effect on the strength of the mediated relationship between networking capabilities and SME performance via entrepreneurial competencies. These findings emphasise the importance of self-efficacy, networking capabilities and competencies of the entrepreneurs as a predictor to improved firm performance.

Does the flutter kick increase hand propulsion in front crawl swimming?

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the effect of the flutter kick on the propulsive force generated by a stroke. Eight male swimmers performed 20 m front crawl trials under two conditions: the Whole Condition, involving maximum effort (T100%) and stroke frequencies at 70, 80, and 90% of T100%, and the Arm Condition, which excluded the flutter kick and matched stroke frequencies with the Whole Condition. Various parameters, including swimming velocity, stroke frequency, stroke length, three-dimensional (3D) resultant hand speed, and hand propulsion were calculated based on underwater 3D motion analysis and hand pressure distribution measurements. A two-way repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted to assess differences, considering the conditions and instructed frequencies as the two factors. There was no significant interaction between the condition and intensity for any of the variables. There was a significant main effect of condition on swimming velocity and stroke length, with these variables being 16.9–18.5% higher and 17.3–19.5% longer, respectively, in the Whole Condition compared to the Arm Condition. However, there was no difference in hand propulsion between the conditions, and it was clarified that the flutter kick did not affect hand propulsion at any swimming velocity.

Do Social Media Likes Affect Food Consumption?

Social norms can affect food consumption. Although social media could be used to disseminate such norms, there is limited experimental research on the subject. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of socially endorsed social media food posts, in the form of Instagram likes, on participants’ eating behavior of wheat food products. The survey was conducted in sensory booths where 149 participants were assigned to one of three conditions viewing three types of images: traditional Greek foods, modern foods, and home decoration as control. However, only one type was socially endorsed with likes. Participants self-reported on a series of questionnaires and were offered traditional Greek rusks (paximathia) and modern crackers as a snack reward during break time on two separate dishes. The hypothesis was that those who had paid attention to socially endorsed images of traditional foods would prefer to consumer Greek rusks, whereas those having paid attention to socially endorsed modern foods would opt for the crackers. Using the ANCOVA model, there was not identified any significant effect of condition on rusk or cracker consumption in grams after controlling the covariates. The results propose that exposure to socially endorsed images with Instagram likes, as a form of social media norm, do not incite people to consume more of either traditional rusks or modern crackers.

Impact of virtual reality immersion on exercise performance and perceptions in young, middle-aged and older adults.

This study compared the effect of high and low levels of virtual reality (VR) immersion during moderate and high intensity cycling-exercise in younger (18-35 years), middle-aged (36-50 years), and older (51-69 years) adults. Thirty participants (5 female and 5 males per age group) completed moderate (steady state: 15 minutes at 60-75% maximum heart rate (MHR)) and high (sprint: 10 x 30 second sprints at 75-85% MHR) intensity cycling in four conditions: VR using a head-mounted display (High HMD), room-projector (Low Room), screen-projector (Low Screen) and No VR. Exercise performance measures (cadence, distance, power output) were recorded. Following each VR condition, exercise enjoyment (PACES) and exercise engagement (Flow State Scale) were measured. Results showed that exercise intensity had a significant effect of age on; heart rate (steady state and sprint), cadence (sprint) and distance (sprint) (p's <0.05). A significant effect of condition was observed during the sprint exercise for heart rate (p < 0.05). No other significant condition effects were observed for exercise performance. Significant effects of condition were identified for exercise engagement relating to sense of control (p < 0.01) and loss of self-consciousness (p < 0.05) with the highest values occurring in the Low Screen condition for all age groups, while transformation of time was significantly different (p < 0.05) for the middle-aged adults (highest during High VR and Low Screen). These results indicate that irrespective of age, participants found themselves in control and immersed more during the Low Screen VR condition than the other VR and No VR conditions. The findings indicate that VR immersion impacts exercise performance and exercise engagement in different age-groups and therefore should be considered when using VR to promote exercise behaviour.

Motion Tape Strain During Trunk Muscle Engagement in Young, Healthy Participants.

Motion Tape (MT) is a low-profile, disposable, self-adhesive wearable sensor that measures skin strain. Preliminary studies have validated MT for measuring lower back movement. However, further analysis is needed to determine if MT can be used to measure lower back muscle engagement. The purpose of this study was to measure differences in MT strain between conditions in which the lower back muscles were relaxed versus maximally activated. Ten participants without low back pain were tested. A matrix of six MTs was placed on the lower back, and strain data were captured under a series of conditions. The first condition was a baseline trial, in which participants lay prone and the muscles of the lower back were relaxed. The subsequent trials were maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs), in which participants did not move, but resisted the examiner force in extension or rotational directions to maximally engage their lower back muscles. The mean MT strain was calculated for each condition. A repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to analyze the effects of conditions (baseline, extension, right rotation, and left rotation) and MT position (1-6) on the MT strain. Post hoc analyses were conducted for significant effects from the overall analysis. The results of the ANOVA revealed a significant main effect of condition (p < 0.001) and a significant interaction effect of sensor and condition (p = 0.01). There were significant differences in MT strain between the baseline condition and the extension and rotation MVIC conditions, respectively, for sensors 4, 5, and 6 (p = 0.01-0.04). The largest differences in MT strain were observed between baseline and rotation conditions for sensors 4, 5, and 6. MT can capture maximal lower back muscle engagement while the trunk remains in a stationary position. Lower sensors are better able to capture muscle engagement than upper sensors. Furthermore, MT captured muscle engagement during rotation conditions better than during extension.

Do treatment responders maintain their gains following a randomized clinical trial comparing an acceptance-based behavior therapy to applied relaxation for generalized anxiety disorder?

ABSTRACT To examine the maintenance effects of acceptance-based behavior therapy (ABBT) and applied relaxation (AR) for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) 46 adults (69.6% female, 82.6% White) with high end-state functioning following an RCT comparing ABBT to AR were re-assessed at 12- and 24-month follow-up. End-state functioning was based on post-treatment scores within one standard deviation of the mean on three of five outcome measures [Clinician Severity Rating (CSR), Hamilton Anxiety, Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale stress subscale (DASS-Stress), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)]. At 12 months, 93.8% of high endstate responders in ABBT and 95.5% in AR had maintained gains. At 24 months, 71.4% of responders from ABBT and 83.3% from AR maintained gains. Mixed-effects regression models revealed a significant effect for Time and Condition for DASS-Stress but not for Condition X Time. There was also a significant time effect for PSWQ, indicating PSWQ and DASS-Stress scores increased across follow-up. The rate of increase did not differ across conditions. Non-significant, small effects were found for all other outcomes indicating that symptoms did not significantly change across follow-up regardless of condition. While the results are limited by dropout rates, clients receiving ABBT or AR appear to maintain gains over long-term follow-up.

A multimodal approach to faking detection in a selection interview

AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of faking detection in a selection interview using a multimodal approach based on paraverbal, verbal/nonverbal cues, and facial expressions. In addition, we compared detection accuracies of simple linear and complex nonlinear machine learning algorithms. A sample of 102 participants were interviewed in two conditions—honest responding and simulated highly realistic selection. Results showed only several significant univariate effects of experimental condition for paraverbal, verbal, and facial expression cues. All the algorithms performed comparably and above chance levels, except for random forests, which overfitted on the training sets and underperformed on the testing sets. Still, considering the algorithms' accuracy was limited, usefulness of multimodal data for deception detection remains questionable.

The Effects of Multiple Acute Turkesterone Doses on Indirect Measures of Hypertrophy and Metabolic Measures: A Preliminary Investigation

Turkesterone is a naturally occurring plant steroid touted for its medicinal, pharmacological, and biological properties with no reported adverse side effects compared with traditional anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS). However, this ostensible enhancement to increase muscle protein synthesis and facilitate augmented thermogenesis remains undescribed despite uninformed and potentially haphazard consumption. To investigate whether turkesterone enhances insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and resting metabolic rate (RMR), eleven apparently healthy males (23.3 ± 2.2) volunteered to participate in the present study with samples collected pre-, 3H post-, and 24H post-ingestion. Subsequent analyses failed to reveal any significant main condition, time, or interaction main effects for serum IGF-1, RMR, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism (p &gt; 0.05). However, non-significant serum IGF-1 concentrations increased with both turkesterone conditions and remained elevated when compared with placebo. Similarly, RMR remained elevated above baseline across the 3 h assessed. Although these data fail to fully support turkesterone as a potent anabolic supplement, nevertheless, our findings are foundational to persistently tease apart this supplement’s purported ergogenic effects and underscore its favorable hemodynamic and gastrointestinal tolerability profile. Future investigations should, therein, aim to assess turkesterone-mediated IGF-1 increases on long-term whole-muscle growth across several training sessions to further substantiate its efficacy on anabolism.

How Does the Tibetan Plateau Land Thermal Initial Condition Influence the Subseasonal Prediction of 2020 Record‐Breaking Mei‐Yu Rainfall

AbstractAccurate subseasonal prediction of heavy rainfall is helpful for disaster mitigation but challenging. The land thermal condition of Tibetan Plateau (TP), usually with climate memory ranging from weeks to seasons, has been seen as a potential predictability source for subseasonal prediction. Aiming at 2020 record‐breaking Mei‐yu rainfall, this study attempts to investigate whether and how the influence of initial TP surface thermal condition near late June influences the July rainfall prediction over the Middle and Lower Yangtze River Region (MLYR), based on two contrasting prediction experiments using a global climate ensemble prediction system. The results show that the most distinguishable change in the downstream prediction in July is the anomalous low‐tropospheric cyclone and the associated increased rainfall over MLYR corresponding to the warmer initial condition of surface TP. Influenced by the invasion of the positive potential vorticity (PV) center that generated over TP and propagated eastward, this low‐level cyclone anomaly over MLYR is formed within the first week of prediction, and persists for the next 3 weeks maintained by the positive feedback between the low‐level cyclone and middle‐tropospheric latent heating over MLYR in the prediction. This study confirmed the significant effect of TP initial thermal condition on downstream prediction ahead of 3 weeks during the Mei‐yu season (peak summer) with strong land–atmosphere coupling over TP.

Barefoot vs shod walking and jogging on the electromyographic activity of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius

Gastrocnemius weakness is associated with Achilles tendinopathies and muscle strains, with the medial gastrocnemius (MG) more commonly injured than the lateral gastrocnemius (LG). Walking and jogging are common in daily activities and sports, and biomechanical differences between shod and barefoot exercise may influence MG and LG activation. Understanding these activation patterns could help optimize training programs for injury prevention and/or rehabilitation. The aim was to compare MG and LG electromyographic activity during walking and jogging, both shod and barefoot. Twenty-nine participants (25.28 ± 4.53 years, 171.31 ± 0.76 cm, 72.68 ± 6.36 kg) completed a warm-up followed by 1 min of walking (80–99 steps/min) and jogging (130–150 steps/min) in both conditions (barefoot and shod, random order). Electromyographic signals were recorded using wearable devices (mDurance Solutions S.L., Granada, Spain; 1024 Hz sampling rate). We measured the root-mean-square (RMS) amplitudes for an entire stride cycle and digitally filtered the signals. For analysis, we normalized electromyographic values to the average peak values obtained during two sprints. We analyzed differences with a repeated-measures analysis of variance. Significant effects of condition (barefoot-shod) and gastrocnemius (MG-LG) were observed (all p ≤ 0.023, ƞp2 = 0.17–0.39), with higher MG activation compared to LG in the barefoot conditions (p = 0.004–0.027, d = 0.72–0.83), and nonsignificant differences between muscles in the shod conditions (p > 0.05). Shod exercise compared to barefoot resulted in lower MG activation (p = 0.001–0.003, d = 0.62–0.63) and non-significant differences in LG activation. These results indicate that barefoot walking and jogging increase MG activation compared to shod conditions, with no differences in LG activation. Additionally, footwear reduces differences between MG and LG.

No Incidental Memory Advantage for Mixed Handed vs. Consistent Right Handed Participants: Conflicting Results From Earlier Research.

Individuals who vary their preferred hand when performing different types of manual activities, so-called mixed handers (MH), have been frequently reported to outperform individuals with a consistent (right) hand preference (cRH) on tasks assessing declarative-memory functions. For example, in one influential study, this MH advantage extended to incidental learning from presumed "deep" semantic processing of verbal stimuli but not from "shallow" phonemic or structural processing. In the present study, we aimed to replicate this research finding in two separate participant samples. First, in a pre-registered and sample-size planned experiment we confronted 49 participants (23 MH; 26 cRH) with "phonemic" and "semantic" word evaluation tasks (using a within design), followed by a surprise delayed recognition test. In a second experiment, we repeated the same procedure with 65 other participants (31 MH, 34 cRH). A mixed-effect analyses of variance found a significant main effect of Encoding Condition (phonemic vs. semantic tasks) in both experiments (effect size: ηp2 = .81 to .85), indicating the classical level-of processing effect with higher recognition hits and sensitivity (d') for words that followed semantic versus phonemic encoding. However, the predicted interaction effect of Encoding Condition with Handedness Group was not statistically significant for either sample (all ηp2 < .03), nor was the main effect of Handedness Group. Thus, our findings conflicted with those of the original study in two independent samples. As we had sufficient statistical power to be confident in our failure to detect a genuine group difference, we cannot confirm the previously reported MH over cRH advantage in incidental learning of verbal material. We discuss possible reasons for these contradictory results and the theoretical implications of this discovery.

Sintering process optimization of the additively manufactured pure copper parts through the metal paste deposited process

The fabrication process, sintering cycles through two sintering methods, microstructural and texture characterization, mechanical properties, and electrical conductivity of metal paste-deposited copper parts were investigated in this study. In the first condition, samples were air-debinded for carbon content removal followed by a sintering cycle. A sintering profile with the maximum sintering temperature and time of 1080 °C and 1 hr. was implemented after performing the air-debinding cycle at 250 °C for 2 hrs. In the second condition, samples were sintered in the environment of copper oxide for carbon removal in the early stages of the sintering cycle, i.e., 1070 °C for 1 hr and 1080 °C for 1, 2, and 3 hrs. The microstructural observations revealed coarser grains in the air-debinded samples, perhaps due to additional generated heat during carbon oxide formation, which may produce destructive effects on the boundary (HAGBs, twins, and CSL) volume and densification behavior of copper parts. However, through the second method, much finer grains and higher densities of boundaries were detected in the microstructure. Despite the significant effect of sintering conditions on the microstructure, texture interpretations revealed minor changes in the pole figures for different situations. Using the second sintering method and owing to the less carbon content and based on the density of the boundaries and their configurations, higher electrical conductivity (98.4±1.3 % IACS) was recorded by sintering the green parts. The comparison between the data from this study with other parts printed through other additive manufacturing techniques demonstrated a superior electrical conductivity level and acceptable balance between strain and strain notably with the sample sintered for 3 hrs.

Neck muscle stiffness during craniocervical flexion under functional upper extremity conditions in patients with chronic non-specific neck pain: A shear-wave elastography study

ObjectiveThe primary objective of the present study was to examine the differences and patterns of change in the neck extensor (NE) muscle stiffness during the Cranio-cervical flexion (CCF) task under different functional conditions of the upper extremity between CNSNP participants and asymptomatic controls. MethodsIn the current case-control study, 25 participants with CNSNP and 25 asymptomatic controls were recruited. The stiffness of the superficial (i.e., upper trapezius, splenius capitis, and semispinalis capitis) and deep (i.e., semispinalis cervicis and multifidus) NE muscles was measured at prone resting, sitting resting, and during the CCF task in different functional conditions of upper extremity using shear wave elastography. ResultsThe findings showed that there was a significant main effect of condition in all NE muscles (P < 0.05), as well as a significant main effect of the group on the stiffness of superficial neck muscles (P < 0.05), indicating higher muscle stiffness in participants with CNSNP compared to the control group. There was no significant group-by-condition interaction effect on the stiffness of NE muscles (P > 0.05), except for the upper trapezius muscle (P = 0.00), indicating a different pattern of stiffness changes compared to the other muscles. ConclusionsIndividuals with CNSNP exhibited significantly greater stiffness in the superficial neck extensor muscles compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, the CCF task performed under functional upper extremity conditions, which includes bilateral shoulder scaption and shoulder abduction-external rotation while seated, resulted in increased stiffness of the NE muscles. Additionally, participants with CNSNP exhibited a higher magnitude of stiffness changes in the upper trapezius muscle across different conditions.

Impact of Digital Game-based Learning Experiences on Reasoning Skills and Science Engagement

This research seeks to use games to promote scientific reasoning and inquiry skills among middle-school children. Particularly, it focuses on the Control of Variables Strategy (CVS), a fundamental component of scientific thinking which enables individuals to test hypotheses and make valid causal inferences based on evidence. The present study draws on and combines existing streams of research in the fields of science education, embodied cognition, and game-based learning to investigate the efficacy of an intervention using the Preparation for Future Learning paradigm in which students play an online text-based adventure simulation game about solving escape rooms in order to prime them for later formal instruction in CVS via a randomized-controlled trial, as well as whether structured or unstructured access to the game has a differential impact on immediate learning vs. retention after a delay. Students were given tests of scientific reasoning at baseline, immediately following the training phase, and a week thereafter. The impact of playing this game on motivation and engagement with science is also analyzed in this trial through the use of survey data. The study found significant effects of study condition on all measures, with students assigned to the game groups outperforming control students, and the unstructured play group showing the strongest performance in the post-study test while the structured play group performed the most poorly in the retention test. The unstructured play group also showed the highest level of intrinsic motivation, as well as higher self-determination and self-efficacy than the structured playing group in the science engagement survey.

Influence of Walking Modification Strategies on Frontal Plane Hip Joint Moment and Gait Naturalness in Healthy Adults

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of lateral trunk lean and step width modification on hip adduction moment in healthy participants and examine their influence on walking naturalness. METHODS: Ten healthy participants underwent gait analysis under 4 walking conditions: natural walking, large trunk lean, doubled step width, and combined modification with slight trunk lean and 1.5 times step width. Early stance and late stance hip adduction moment were analyzed and compared using repeated-measures analysis of variance. Subjective naturalness of gait was also recorded. RESULTS: We observed a significant effect of walking condition on the hip adduction moment during early stance (F3,36 = 6.665, P = .001) and gait naturalness (F3,36 = 30.519, P&lt;.001), but not hip adduction moment during late stance ( P = .733). Pairwise comparison indicated significantly reduced hip adduction moment during early stance with large trunk lean when compared to natural walking (36.7% less, P = .002, Cohen’s d = −1.41). Both combined and doubled step width modifications did not yield the expected hip adduction moment reduction ( P&gt;.296). The perceived naturalness of the doubled step width modification was most comparable to natural walking ( P = .529), while the trunk lean modification was significantly less natural than natural walking and the least natural modification overall (81.1% less, P&lt;.001, Cohen’s d = −4.34). CONCLUSION: Although trunk lean modification effectively reduces hip joint loading, it is perceived as the least natural pattern. Step width was more challenging to modify than trunk lean.
