Development and Validation of the Ease of Imagery Questionnaire.

The present series of studies aimed to develop and provide initial validation of the Ease of Imagery Questionnaire (EIQ)-a measure assessing ease of imaging different positive and negative imagery content reflective of valence and engaging or disengaging in adverse situations. Five studies were conducted to collectively examine the questionnaire's factor structure and concurrent validity. Study 1 (N = 336) and Study 2 (N = 207) informed the development of 16 items of the EIQ, with a four-factor structure supported in Studies 3 (N = 219), 4 (N = 135), and 5 (N = 184) using confirmatory factor analysis. Study 3 also supported concurrent validity with significant bivariate correlations (p < .05) with the similar Sport Imagery Ability Questionnaire subscales, while studies 4 and 5 demonstrated criterion validity in the EIQ's prediction of challenge and threat appraisal tendencies, perceived stress, stress mindset, and anxiety and depressive symptoms. Overall, the EIQ demonstrates a replicable four-factor structure and appears to assess ability to image content associated with positive and negative emotions as well as demanding stress-evoking situations.

The association between maximal muscle strength, disease severity and psychopharmacotherapy among young to middle-aged inpatients with affective disorders – a prospective pilot study

BackgroundMotor alterations and lowered physical activity are common in affective disorders. Previous research has indicated a link between depressive symptoms and declining muscle strength primarily focusing on the elderly but not younger individuals. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between mood and muscle strength in a sample of N = 73 young to middle-aged hospitalized patients (18–49 years, mean age 30.7 years) diagnosed with major depressive, bipolar and schizoaffective disorder, with a focus on moderating effects of psychopharmacotherapy. The study was carried out as a prospective observational study at a German psychiatric university hospital between September 2021 and March 2022.MethodsEmploying a standardized strength circuit consisting of computerized strength training devices, we measured the maximal muscle strength (Fmax) using three repetitions maximum across four muscle regions (abdomen, arm, back, leg) at three time points (t1-t3) over four weeks accompanied by psychometric testing (MADRS, BPRS, YRMS) and blood lipid profiling in a clinical setting. For analysis of psychopharmacotherapy, medication was split into activating (AM) and inhibiting (IM) medication and dosages were normalized by the respective WHO defined daily dose.ResultsWhile we observed a significant decrease of the MADRS score and increase of the relative total Fmax (rTFmax) in the first two weeks (t1-t2) but not later (both p < .001), we did not reveal a significant bivariate correlation between disease severity (MADRS) and muscle strength (rTFmax) at any of the timepoints. Individuals with longer disease history displayed reduced rTFmax (p = .048). IM was significantly associated with decreased rTFmax (p = .032). Regression models provide a more substantial effect of gender, age, and IM on muscle strength than the depressive episode itself (p < .001).ConclusionsThe results of the study indicate that disease severity and muscle strength are not associated in young to middle-aged inpatients with affective disorders using a strength circuit as observational measurement. Future research will be needed to differentiate the effect of medication, gender, and age on muscle strength and to develop interventions for prevention of muscle weakness, especially in younger patients with chronic affective illnesses.

A mixed methods study of moral distress among frontline nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study's purpose was to develop an understanding of factors affecting moral distress among nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. California-licensed, registered nurses who cared for COVID-19 patients for at least 3 months were recruited for an explanatory concurrent mixed methods study. Data are derived from the first of two surveys administered 3 months apart, including open-ended questions. Variables with significant bivariate correlations were included as simultaneous predictors in a linear regression model predicting moral distress. The overall model was significant, explaining a substantial portion of the variance in moral distress, but results showed only organizational support and institutional betrayal uniquely predicted moral distress. Three qualitative themes were identified: Ethical Violations in Care, Institutional Betrayal, and Traumatic Strain. The impacts of organizational support and institutional betrayal on nurses' moral distress are important findings in both datasets. Findings provide insights into how nurses' experiences affected their feelings about work. Participants indicated feeling disregarded by management and institutional structures, indicating potential means of slowing the rates at which nurses plan to leave bedside practice. Effects of nitrogen addition and leaf age on needle traits and the relationships among traits in Pinus koraiensis

Leaf functional traits are essential for the growth and adaptation of trees to environmental changes. However, how needle traits and trait–trait relationships respond to different nitrogen (N) addition rates and leaf ages remain unclear for evergreen coniferous species. Our study aimed to investigate the effects of N addition and leaf age on needle traits and their bivariate correlations. Understanding resource utilization and distribution strategies during tree growth under the background of increased N deposition is important. We conducted a six-year manipulative field experiment in a Pinus koraiensis plantation in northeastern China with variable N addition levels: control (no N addition, CK); 20 kg N ha−1yr−1 (low-N, LN); 40 kg N ha−1yr−1 (medium-N, MN); and 80 kg N ha−1yr−1 (high-N, HN). The needle trait data were collected in September. The morphological traits, i.e., specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC); and chemical traits, i.e., leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC), leaf phosphorus concentration (LPC), and leaf nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) concentrations, were measured to investigate the changes in needle traits and their bivariate correlations. We found that N addition and needle age significantly affected needle traits, and the effect of needle age was much stronger than that of N addition. N addition and needle age had no significant interaction effects on any of the traits except for the LNC. Due to the dispersal trait values of current-year needles, there were almost no significant bivariate correlations between traits under different N addition rates. The SLA–LDMC and LDMC–LNC relationships were found to differ among the various N addition rates, and other traittrait relationships may be relatively stable because of the weak plasticity of older needles. Additionally, needle age significantly affected the slope of the SLA–LDMC relationship and the elevation of the LDMC–LPC and NSC–LNC relationships, indicating differences in the ecological strategies of needles at different ages. In summary, our findings emphasize that trait–trait relationships in current-year and older needles were inconsistent in response to N addition and that the optimal allocation of resources in needles was based on their functional needs during leaf aging.

Age Suppresses the Association Between Traumatic Brain Injury Severity and Functional Outcomes: A Study Using the NIDILRR TBIMS Dataset.

Recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI) is extremely difficult to predict, with TBI severity usually demonstrating weak predictive validity for functional or other outcomes. A possible explanation may lie in the statistical phenomenon called suppression, according to which a third variable masks the true association between predictor and outcome, making it appear weaker than it actually is. Age at injury is a strong candidate as a suppressor because of its well-established main and moderating effects on TBI outcomes. We tested age at injury as a possible suppressor in the predictive chain of effects between TBI severity and functional disability, up to 10years post-TBI. Follow-up interviews were conducted during telephone interviews. We used data from the 2020 NDILRR Model Systems National Dataset for 4 successive follow-up interviews: year 1 (n =10,734), year 2 (n =9174), year 5 (n =6,201), and year 10 (n =3027). Successive cross-sectional multiple regression analyses. Injury severity was operationalized using a categorical variable representing duration of posttrauma amnesia. The Glasgow Outcomes Scale-Extended (GOS-E) operationally defined functioning. Sociodemographic characteristics having significant bivariate correlations with GOS-E were included. Entry of age at injury into the regression models significantly increases the association between TBI severity and functioning up to 10years post-TBI. Age at injury is a suppressor variable, masking the true effect of injury severity on functional outcomes. Identifying the mediators of this suppression effect is an important direction for TBI rehabilitation research.

Farm to fork strategy for evaluating the qualitative and quantitative health risks to the Nepalese population associated with pesticide residues in apple and banana

Studies of pesticide use on commercial fruits are limited in Nepal. We surveyed the experiences and opinions of banana farmers in Nepal and monitored pesticide residues in apples and bananas. We monitored the residual status and associated health risks of 51 multi-group pesticides using Liquid Chromatography Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry. Apple and banana samples were collected from different districts, farms, markets, and seller categories (our farm to fork survey). We found a significant bivariate positive correlation between farmers’ knowledge of pesticide negative effects and safety-promoting behavior among farmers. Residues of tebuconazole, difenoconazole, propargite and imidacloprid were most frequently detected. Of all the detected pesticides, propargite showed the highest concentration in apples, exceeding regulatory maximum residue limits (MRLs) in 24% of the samples. Epoxiconazole, tebuconazole, imidacloprid, quinalphos, fenpropathrin and bifenthrin in apples, and metalaxyl and imidacloprid in bananas also crossed their MRLs. Dietary exposure to pesticides among children and adults was estimated based on a hazard quotient and hazard index by using lower-bound and upper-bound approaches. Our results indicated that children consuming apples with residues of propargite are exposed to the greatest pesticide hazard.

Facilitators and barriers for implementation of health programmes with Māori communities.

Addressing health inequities that Māori (Indigenous peoples) communities face in New Zealand is a key aim of researchers and practitioners. However, there is limited understanding of the implementation processes and outcomes of health programmes for addressing these inequities. The aim of this study was twofold: (a) to identify correlates of implementation outcomes and (b) to identify facilitators and barriers to implementation effectiveness. The study involved a concurrent mixed method approach. Through an online survey, 79 participants with experience in implementing a health programme with a Māori community identified outcomes and processes of the programme. Additionally, nine Māori community providers shared their perceptions and experience of facilitators and barriers to implementation effectiveness through an in-depth interview. The quantitative and qualitative findings were integrated to address the aims of the study. For the first aim, we identified two key outcomes: overall health impacts and sustainability. Three of the variables had significant and positive bivariate correlations with health impacts: cultural alignment, community engagement, and individual skills. The only significant correlate of sustainability was evidence-based. For the second aim, participants described four facilitators (leadership, whanaungatanga [relationships], sharing information, digestible information) and four barriers (system constraints, lack of funding, cultural constraints, lack of engagement) to effective implementation. Overall, leadership, aligning culture, and building on whanaungatanga, while getting financial resources and systems support, are the core elements to supporting implementation efforts in Māori communities.

Longitudinal processes among humility, social justice activism, transcendence, and well-being.

Existing research shows positive associations between humility and well-being, and between civic engagement and well-being. Rarely have humility, civic engagement, and well-being been examined together. We build off of previous cross-sectional findings and a prior longitudinal study that used three waves of data and found significant positive bivariate correlations between humility and the presence of life purpose across time points. Extending these previous findings, we used six waves of data obtained from graduate students at 18 seminaries across North America (N = 574; Mage = 31.54; 46.7% female; 65.3% White) to explore the dynamic associations among humility and life purpose, along with horizontal transcendence (an indicator of the attitudinal dimension of civic engagement) and social justice activism (an indicator for the behavioral dimension). We explored reciprocal short-run processes and dynamic long-run effects using a general cross-lagged panel model. We found robust evidence for a reciprocal influence between the presence of life purpose and horizontal transcendence, and long-run effects for initial levels of life purpose to influence later levels of horizontal transcendence. We also found long-run effects for the influence of initial levels of life purpose on later levels of humility, and initial levels of social justice activism on later levels of horizontal transcendence. Implications center on the use of the findings for planning future one-time life purpose and social justice interventions to affect changes in humility and horizontal transcendence.

Trust and perceived mental health access: Exploring the relationship between perceived access barriers and veteran-reported trust.

The importance of patients' trust in health care is well known. However, identifying actionable access barriers to trust is challenging. The goal of these exploratory analyses is to identify actionable access barriers that correlate with and predict patients' lack of trust in providers and in the health care system. This article combines existing data from three studies regarding perceived access to mental health services to explore the relationship between provider and system trust and other access barriers. Data from the Perceived Access Inventory (PAI) were analyzed from three studies that together enrolled a total of 353 veterans who screened positive for a mental health problem and had a VA mental health encounter in the previous 12 months. The PAI includes actionable barriers to accessing VA mental health services. The data are cross-sectional, and analyses include Spearman rank correlations of PAI access barriers and provider and system trust, and linear regressions examining the effect of demographic, clinical, and PAI barriers on lack of trust in VA mental health providers and in the VA health care system. Age, depression, and anxiety symptoms and PAI items demonstrated statistically significant bivariate correlations with provider and system trust. However, in multivariate linear regressions, only PAI items remained statistically significant. The PAI items that predicted provider and system trust could be addressed in interventions to improve provider- and system-level trust. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved).

Positive cardiovascular health: longitudinal investigation of sustained health behavior in a cross-lagged model.

Our study focuses on the role of psychological states in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and explores the potential of positive psychological factors in reducing CVD risk. While existing research has predominantly examined negative mental states and risk behavior, this longitudinal study takes a novel approach by investigating positive psychological wellbeing and its impact on sustained health behavior. The research involved participants (n = 502) with medium to high cardiovascular risk who underwent a comprehensive risk assessment in 2012, followed by written risk communication. Health behavior and psychological variables were measured in 2012 and 2019. A cross-lagged panel was employed to repeat measures of a cardiovascular health index with latent factors. Results indicated an excellent fit for the model (RMSEA = 0.0644, CFI = 0.936, TLI = 0.921, SRMR = 0.050), with significant associations between the observed variables (p < 0.05) and created latent factors. Furthermore, the model implied significant bivariate correlations (p < 0.05) between latent constructs of sustained health behavior and positive psychological states in 2012 and 2019. A significant regression relationship between Health Awareness Index 2012 and 2019, between Psychological wellbeing in 2012 and 2019 (B = 1.103 p = 0.038), latent factors could be identified (B = 1.103 p = 0.038) using cross-lagged panel model. Results highlighted the importance of cardiovascular health awareness, subjective risk perception, and self-directed efforts in facilitating health behavior change. Relationships between psychological wellbeing and health awareness emphasize that positive experiences and reinforcement are crucial in sustaining optimal health behavior. Our findings offer a new perspective on cardiovascular risk screening and preventive interventions. Extending cardiovascular risk screening with psychological measures may broaden prevention opportunities by including psychological elements reinforcing positive psychological states. The findings suggest that an effective prevention program must consider stabilizing and maintaining positive psychological states to achieve lasting improvements in cardiovascular health.

29 Regulate to Remember: Cognitive Reappraisal Ability Impacts Prospective Memory Performance

Objective:Emotion regulation is generally thought of as the process of overriding one's initial emotional response to personally relevant events. One frequently investigated type of emotion regulation is cognitive reappraisal, which describes one's ability to cognitively alter the meaning of an event. Cognitive reappraisal is associated with better cognitive, social, and health outcomes compared to other emotion regulation strategies. The cognitive building blocks of cognitive reappraisal are related to executive cognitive control processes, which broadly describe one's ability to engage in non-automatic and goal-oriented behaviors. Crucially, executive control processes are also relevant in demanding cognitive tasks such as prospective memory since, similarly to cognitive reappraisal, they involve effortful and purpose driven efforts. However, cognitive reappraisal has thus far not been investigated regarding prospective memory performance despite findings that suggest that emotionally evocative stimuli improve prospective memory performance. The present study investigated whether cognitive reappraisal state and trait measures as well as other types of emotion regulation strategies are associated with prospective memory accuracy of negatively valenced prospective memory targets.Participants and Methods:A total of 45 participants (69% women; M = 22.62 years, SD = 5.69 years) took part in this cross-sectional study. Cognitive reappraisal and prospective memory tasks were administered on the computer. A total of 106 pictures were shown in the prospective memory task, including 12 prospective memory hits. A 2-back paradigm was used as the effortful ongoing task. Dependent measures included accuracy of and reaction times to negative prospective memory hits. A total of 45 pictures were shown in the cognitive reappraisal task. Participants were asked to decrease their negative emotions when looking at previously normed negatively valenced pictures versus merely looking at them (Lang et al., 2001). Dependent measures in the cognitive reappraisal task included success of downregulating negative emotion after the DECREASE versus LOOK instruction. A mood manipulation check and a questionnaire asking about participants' reappraisal strategies was conducted. Trait based measures of emotion regulation included the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and the Dysfunction of Emotion Regulation Scale.Results:Participants endorsed significantly higher negative mood after looking at negative versus neutral pictures, t(48) = 22.77, p , .05). Ratings further indicated that participants were able to significantly decrease how negative they felt when reappraising versus looking at negative pictures, t(44) = 12.82, p , .05. Regarding the relationship between prospective memory accuracy of negatively valanced prospective memory targets and cognitive reappraisal ability, no significant bivariate correlation was found (p &gt; .05). However, a significant bivariate correlation was found between reaction times to negatively valenced prospective memory targets and cognitive reappraisal ability (rs = -.32, p = .03). No significant relationship was observed between prospective memory accuracy of or reaction times to negatively valenced prospective memory targets and trait based measures of emotion regulation (all ps &gt; .05).Conclusions:Hypotheses were partly supported. Higher state-based cognitive reappraisal abilities may be associated with lower cognitive costs when asked to remember negatively evocative pictures and/or higher overall cognitive capacity. The importance of assessing emotion regulation when utilizing emotionally evocative stimuli and their clinical significant is discussed.

Narcissism and relational capacity: the contribution of identity integration and social concordance

Narcissism is often seen as a unidimensional construct, however, more recently, a plethora of studies have pointed to its multidimensional nature. Despite this, the role of narcissism as a multifaceted construct in the quality of interpersonal relationships has rarely been tested. In addition, less is known about what mechanisms may underly this association. In this study, we investigated how grandiose, vulnerable, and isolated narcissism, are associated with relational capacity and whether identity integration and social concordance may underly these associations. The sample included 222 male participants with a mean age of 37.71 (SD = 13.25). Of these, 157 were participants from the community, and 65 were in outpatient treatment at four Dutch forensic centers. The Dutch Narcissism Scale was used to measure three forms of narcissism, while The Severity Indices of Personality Problems – Short Form was used to measure identity integration, social concordance, and relational capacity. The mediation model was tested in R and adjusted for age and criminal behavior. Despite significant bivariate correlations between three narcissistic types and relational capacity only isolated narcissism was directly and negatively associated with relational capacity in the mediation model. Likewise, both identity integration and social concordance were positively associated with relational capacity. Grandiose narcissism was positively, while vulnerable narcissism was negatively associated with relational capacity, but only through identity integration. Identity integration was also a significant mediator in the association between isolated narcissism and relational capacity along with social concordance. Finally, criminal behavior appeared to be the only significant covariate indicating that forensic outpatients (versus community participants) were more likely to have impaired relational capacity. The findings of this study could be useful in clinical practice to improve the treatment of narcissistic individuals and make them less harmful to others in social and intimate relationships.

Vascular function and cognition in persons with multiple sclerosis: Preliminary examination.

Cognitive dysfunction is one of the most common consequences of multiple sclerosis (MS). Recent studies have noted a high incidence of vascular comorbidity that might be associated with cognitive decline among persons with MS. However, there is a lack of evidence on vascular biomarkers (e.g., arterial stiffness indices) that are associated with cognition in MS. The current study characterized differences in vascular function between persons with MS and healthy controls, and examined the association between vascular and cognitive function in persons with MS compared with healthy controls. The MS group had significantly worse cognitive performance and higher cfPWV than healthy controls. There were significant bivariate correlations between the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) score with AIx75 (rs=-0.45) and cfPWV (rs=0.30) in the MS sample, but not in healthy controls. Regression analyses further indicated a nonlinear association between cfPWV and the SDMT in the MS sample (p-values for β coefficients < 0.05; adjusted R2=0.10). No significant associations were observed among other cognitive and vascular outcomes. Our findings suggest significant associations between arterial stiffness and cognitive processing speed in MS. This preliminary examination provides initial, cross-sectional support for future population-based research on cognitive and vascular function in persons with MS. Such results may be clinically important for developing interventions that focus on regulating vascular dysfunction as an early treatment for preventing cognitive impairment in the MS population.

Habituation or sensitization of brain response to food cues: Temporal dynamic analysis in an functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

In the modern obesogenic environment, heightened reactivity to food-associated cues plays a major role in overconsumption by evoking appetitive responses. Accordingly, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have implicated regions of the salience and rewards processing in this dysfunctional food cue-reactivity, but the temporal dynamics of brain activation (sensitization or habituation over time) remain poorly understood. Forty-nine obese or overweight adults were scanned in a single fMRI session to examine brain activation during the performance of a food cue-reactivity task. A general linear model (GLM) was used to validate the activation pattern of food cue reactivity in food > neutral contrast. The linear mixed effect models were used to examine the effect of time on the neuronal response during the paradigm of food cue reactivity. Neuro-behavioral relationships were investigated with Pearson's correlation tests and group factor analysis (GFA). A linear mixed-effect model revealed a trend for the time-by-condition interactions in the left medial amygdala [t(289) = 2.21, β = 0.1, P = 0.028], right lateral amygdala [t(289) = 2.01, β = 0.26, P = 0.045], right nucleus accumbens (NAc) [t(289) = 2.81, β = 0.13, P = 0.005] and left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) [t(289) = 2.58, β = 0.14, P = 0.01], as well as in the left superior temporal cortex [42 Area: t(289) = 2.53, β = 0.15, P = 0.012; TE1.0_TE1.2 Area: t(289) = 3.13, β = 0.27, P = 0.002]. Habituation of blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) signal during exposure to food vs. neutral stimuli was evident in these regions. We have not found any area in the brain with significant increased response to food-related cues over time (sensitization). Our results elucidate the temporal dynamics of cue-reactivity in overweight and obese individuals with food-induced craving. Both subcortical areas involved in reward processing and cortical areas involved in inhibitory processing are getting habituated over time in response to food vs. neutral cues. There were significant bivariate correlations between self-report behavioral/psychological measures with individual habituation slopes for the regions with dynamic activity, but no robust cross-unit latent factors were identified between the behavioral, demographic, and self-report psychological groups. This work provides novel insights into dynamic neural circuit mechanisms supporting food cue reactivity, thereby suggesting pathways in biomarker development and cue-desensitization interventions.

More than one-half of the variance in in vivo proton MR spectroscopy metabolite estimates is common to all metabolites.

The present study characterized associations among brain metabolite levels, applying bivariate and multivariate (i.e., factor analysis) statistical methods to total creatine (tCr)-referenced estimates of the major Point RESolved Spectroscopy (PRESS) proton MR spectroscopy (1 H-MRS) metabolites (i.e., total NAA/tCr, total choline/tCr, myo-inositol/tCr, glutamate + glutamine/tCr) acquired at 3 T from medial parietal lobe in a large (n = 299), well-characterized international cohort of healthy volunteers. Results supported the hypothesis that 1 H-MRS-measured metabolite estimates are moderately intercorrelated (Mr = 0.42, SDr = 0.11, ps < 0.001), with more than one-half (i.e., 57%) of the total variability in metabolite estimates explained by a single common factor. Older age was significantly associated with lower levels of the identified common metabolite variance (CMV) factor (β = -0.09, p = 0.048), despite not being associated with levels of any individual metabolite. Holding CMV factor levels constant, females had significantly lower levels of total choline (i.e., unique metabolite variance; β = -0.19, p < 0.001), mirroring significant bivariate correlations between sex and total choline reported previously. Supplementary analysis of water-referenced metabolite estimates (i.e., including tCr/water) demonstrated lower, although still substantial, intercorrelations among metabolites, with 37% of total metabolite variance explained by a single common factor. If replicated, these results would suggest that applied 1 H-MRS researchers shift their analytical framework from examining bivariate associations between individual metabolites and specialty-dependent (e.g., clinical, research) variables of interest (e.g., using t-tests) to examining multivariable (i.e., covariate) associations between multiple metabolites and specialty-dependent variables of interest (e.g., using multiple regression).

Clinical Trials in Chronic Arthritic Diseases with Underestimated Impact of Placebo Effects on Study Size Calculation.

Whether and to which extent placebo treatment in double-blinded randomized controlled clinical trials is effective in chronic arthritic diseases has not been studied before. Therefore, a systematic literature search was undertaken to detect eligible trials. Demographic data of the placebo groups as well as concomitant and previous disease outcomes were collected. Analyses of significant bivariate correlations and linear regression between clinical endpoints and characteristics of the placebo groups were performed. A total of 152 double-blinded randomized controlled studies, including 21,616 participants in the placebo groups, was analyzed. The results of bivariate correlations and linear regressions revealed significant positive associations between responses in the placebo groups and the following factors: (i) naïvety of previous treatment and (ii) early stage of disease. In addition to the clinical relevance, the results support the importance of the placebo effect on study size calculations, and will allow an optimized calculation of patients' numbers for early placebo-controlled trials conducted in patients with chronic arthritic diseases.

Relationship of Cognition and Alzheimer's Disease with Gastrointestinal Tract Disorders: A Large-Scale Genetic Overlap and Mendelian Randomisation Analysis.

Emerging observational evidence suggests links between cognitive impairment and a range of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) disorders; however, the mechanisms underlying their relationships remain unclear. Leveraging large-scale genome-wide association studies' summary statistics, we comprehensively assessed genetic overlap and potential causality of cognitive traits and Alzheimer's disease (AD) with several GIT disorders. We demonstrate a strong and highly significant inverse global genetic correlation between cognitive traits and GIT disorders-peptic ulcer disease (PUD), gastritis-duodenitis, diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), but not inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Further analysis detects 35 significant (p &lt; 4.37 × 10-5) bivariate local genetic correlations between cognitive traits, AD, and GIT disorders (including IBD). Mendelian randomisation analysis suggests a risk-decreasing causality of educational attainment, intelligence, and other cognitive traits on PUD and GERD, but not IBD, and a putative association of GERD with cognitive function decline. Gene-based analysis reveals a significant gene-level genetic overlap of cognitive traits with AD and GIT disorders (IBD inclusive, pbinomial-test = 1.18 × 10-3-2.20 × 10-16). Our study supports the protective roles of genetically-influenced educational attainments and other cognitive traits on the risk of GIT disorders and highlights a putative association of GERD with cognitive function decline. Findings from local genetic correlation analysis provide novel insights, indicating that the relationship of IBD with cognitive traits (and AD) will depend largely on their local effects across the genome.

Effects of Self-awareness and Cognitive Impairment on Depression Status in Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury

<h3>Research Objectives</h3> To examine the association of self-awareness and cognitive impairments on depression after controlling for potential covariates in a sample of adults with chronic complicated mild to severe traumatic brain injury. <h3>Design</h3> Secondary analysis of a cohort study. <h3>Setting</h3> Community. <h3>Participants</h3> The study included a volunteer sample of sixty-five community-dwelling individuals with a history of complicated-mild-to-severe TBI. Inclusion criteria were: 1) documented history of TBI; 2) over six months post-injury; 3) living in the community; 4) older than 18 years old. <h3>Interventions</h3> Not applicable. <h3>Main Outcome Measures</h3> Depression status was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ9) questions and dichotomized as Current Major or Minor Depression and No Current Depression. Logistic regression models were formed using self-awareness, cognitive impairments, and their interaction as independent variables with dichotomized depression as the dependent variable. <h3>Results</h3> Sixty-three participants with complete data were included in the analysis. Participants were aged 18 to 83 years old (mean=45.51 + 15.90 years), were primarily men (79.37%), and 85.71% of participants had current major or minor depression. Disability was identified as a covariate based on a significant bivariate correlation with depression (r=.286, p < .05). The logistic regression revealed no significant associations of self-awareness and cognitive impairments on depression after controlling for disability, but disability was significantly associated with depression status (p < .05). <h3>Conclusions</h3> Cognitive impairment, self-awareness, and their interaction may not contribute to depression status in chronic TBI, but those with depression did have more disability. It is possible that more impaired cognition and self-awareness acutely after injury contribute to later disability and, subsequently, depression, but a longitudinal prospective study is required to test this hypothesis. <h3>Author(s) Disclosures</h3> The study was supported in part of the SHRS Dissertation Development Fund.

Assessing positive adaptation during a global crisis: The development and validation of the family positive adaptation during COVID-19 scale.

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the psychosocial functioning of children and families. It is important to consider adversity in relation to processes of positive adaptation. To date, there are no empirically validated multi-item scales measuring COVID-related positive adaptation within families. The aim of the current study was to develop and validate a new measure: the Family Positive Adaptation during COVID-19 Scale (Family PACS). The sample included 372 female and 158 male caregivers (73% White-European/North American; median 2019 income = $50,000 to $74,999 USD) of children ages 5–18 years old from the United Kingdom (76%), the United States (19%), Canada (4%), and Australia (1%), who completed measures in May 2020. Participants responded to a 14-item survey indexing a range of perceived coping and adaptation behaviors at the beginning of the pandemic. An exploratory factor analysis yielded an optimal one-factor solution comprised of seven items related to family cohesion, flexibility, routines, and meaning-making (loadings from 0.44 to 0.67). Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated measurement invariance across female and male caregivers, demonstrating that the factor structure, loadings, and thresholds did not vary by caregiver sex. There was evidence for concurrent validity with significant bivariate correlations between the Family PACS scores and measures of caregiver positive coping, parenting practices, couple satisfaction, and family functioning (correlations from 0.10 to 0.23), but not negatively-valenced constructs. Findings inform our conceptualization of how families have adapted to adverse pandemic-related conditions. Further, we provide preliminary support for the Family PACS as a practical tool for evaluating positive family adaptation during this global crisis, with implications for future widespread crises.
