The impact of green innovation on organizational resilience

Organizational resilience can help an enterprise to recover quickly in the crisis, and even achieve growth against the trend, which is crucial for an enterprise. From the perspective of green innovation, this paper selects Shougang Group, BAIC Group and BOE Group as research samples for case analysis. This paper summarizes the following conclusions: green innovation can promote the sustainable development of enterprises, which is the external recognition and support of enterprises, thus enhancing the resilience of the organization. And give some suggestions: 1) Enterprises should be firmly determined to green innovation, and dare to try according to the actual situation of enterprises.2) Enterprises should work together to grow together, and help to green innovation and digital transformation and upgrading. 3) Actively cooperate with relevant departments to promote the green development of enterprises.

Measuring the environmental protection efficiency and productivity of the 49 largest iron and steel enterprises in China

China is the largest source of carbon emissions in the world, and the Chinese iron and steel sector is the main contributor to the growth in greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to excessive greenhouse gas emissions, climate change and global warming have seriously threatened the survival of animals, plants and even humans. To cope with global climate problems, it is our responsibility to establish environment-friendly iron and steel enterprises. In this study, data envelopment analysis (DEA) is used to evaluate the environmental protection performance of China’s iron and steel enterprises based on the panel data during 2015–2017. We first establish an environment-related index system for the industry and build a range-adjusted measure model. Then, the global Malmquist productivity index based on DEA is introduced to analyse environmental efficiency and environmental productivity. The results show that most Chinese iron and steel enterprises achieved high environmental efficiency. However, many enterprises exhibited low environmental productivity and especially Shougang Group, HBIS Tangsteel and Anyang Iron and Steel continued to decline from 2015 to 2017. In general, Valin Hengyang and Shaanxi Iron and Steel achieved better performance in environmental protection. Based on the above results, the environmental problems in our country are still very serious. Thus, the government needs to formulate suitable environmental regulations to reduce the gap between the global frontier and contemporaneous frontier over two periods. Furthermore, entrepreneurs should introduce some advanced environmental technologies to improve their technical level and environmental protection level.

LanzaTech enables plastics from steel

LanzaTech’s technology to convert industrial emissions into ethanol with microbes is being used to make polyester. A joint venture between LanzaTech, the Chinese steel maker Shougang Group, and New Zealand’s TangMing has produced about 35 million L of ethanol from the emissions of a steel recycling mill in its first year of operations. The alcohol has been used as a fuel so far, but it will now go to India Glycols for conversion into ethylene glycol. Far Eastern New Century will react the glycol with terephthalic acid to make polyester for fiber use.

Spatial and Temporal Analysis of the Mitigating Effects of Industrial Relocation on the Surface Urban Heat Island over China

Urbanization is typically accompanied by the relocation and reconstruction of industrial areas due to limited space and environmental requirements, particularly in the case of a capital city. Shougang Group, one of the largest steel mill operators in China, was relocated from Beijing to Hebei Province. To study the thermal environmental changes at the Shougang industrial site before and after relocation, four Landsat images (from 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2016) were used to calculate the land surface temperature (LST). Using the urban heat island ratio index (URI), we compared the LST values for the four images of the investigated area. Following the relocation of Shougang Group, the URI values decreased from 0.55 in 2005 to 0.21 in 2016, indicating that the surface urban heat island effect in the area was greatly mitigated; we infer that this effect was related to steel production. This study shows that the use of Landsat images to assess industrial thermal pollution is feasible. Accurate and rapid extraction of thermal pollution data by remote sensing offers great potential for the management of industrial pollution sources and distribution, and for technical support in urban planning departments.

A Temperature Field Analysis for Contraction and Collapse of 72AU2 Hot-Rolled Steel

Hot rolled coil after winding cooled to room temperature in the storage room often takes 4 to 5 days. The process of coil cooling sometimes produces collapse defects in industrial applications. In this research, the cooling process after coiling of Shougang Group 72AU2 hot-rolled strip steel was taken as the research material. We used finite element method (FEM) software ABAQUS to analyze the temperature field of coil after coiling. At first, a temperature field model of hot-rolled coil during cooling was established by the finite element method. The simulation results show that, the maximum temperature difference is 206°C, when the cooling-time is about 50th min. The highest temperature node was about at 44% apart from inside diameter distance position in the thickness direction, and finally moved to the node which is at 26% apart from inside diameter distance position. Temperature field calculation considered the anisotropy of the heat transfer. The temperature of each node can be obtained by this simulation, which cannot be obtained from field measurements and experiments. Thereby this research has a significant impact on further research on the causes of the contraction and collapse.

Construction of Collaborative Innovation Mechanism of Knowledge Alliance between Chinese State-Owned Enterprises and Organizations

In order to improve learning ability and innovation ability in a competitive marketplace rapidly, more enterprises begin to explore a collaborative innovation model which takes knowledge alliance as its organizational form. Experts and practitioners particularly focus on collaborative innovation operation mechanism of knowledge alliance. This paper makes use of grounded theory to refine a collaborative innovation mechanism model of knowledge alliance by analyzing a concrete case from the collaborative innovation center of Dongda and Shougang Group and collecting related data by open questionnaires. It is found in the research that the collaborative innovation mechanism of knowledge alliance is composed of dynamic mechanism, operating mechanism, dispersal mechanism and safeguard mechanism. The research also elucidates the elements and concrete content of the four mechanisms of knowledge alliance's collaborative innovation. On this basis, empirical analysis conducted by SPSS validates and improves innovative mechanism model of knowledge alliance, which provides enterprises with theoretical foundation and practice guidance for knowledge alliance's collaborative innovation.

Design and assessment of urban drainage and water reuse systems for the reconstruction of formerly industrial areas: a case in Beijing

The Shougang Group is an industrial steel enterprise occupying 800 ha in Beijing that will cease production by 2010. The area will be converted to a new financial and commercial zone. The rebuilding of the water infrastructure in this area should address water shortages in Beijing and retain the industrial landmark of a large cooling water tank. A design framework and an assessment system with 11 indicators were developed for this purpose. Four reconstruction schemes are presented here. Scheme 1 is a traditional system that completely depends on outside the municipal facility. Schemes 2, 3, and 4 are systems to separately discharge greywater and blackwater. Scheme 4 uses a vacuum system that allows the reclamation of nutrients. Schemes 2 and 4 use wetland-treated greywater to fill the water tank. Scheme 3 reuses greywater for toilets after on-site treatment. Scheme 2 is recommended due to its lower cost, greater environmental benefit, moderate resource reclamation, and higher technical feasibility.

Research on the Contribution of Structure Adjustment on Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reduction based on LMDI Method

With the big challenge from global climate change and energy crisis, and having observed the relationship between structure adjustment with the change of carbon dioxide emissions intensity, the author wants to ascertain the effect of industry and energy structure adjustment on the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions at Shijingshan district in Beijing, where the project of removing Shougang group and the “coal to gas” have been taken place at “11th five-year plan” period. Based on the use of the long-mean Divasia Index Decomposition method (LMDI), the carbon dioxide emissions intensity is decomposed into the contribution from four components: industry structure effect, industrial energy intensity effect, energy structure effect and emission coefficient effect. It is found that the contribution of industry and energy structure effect into the decrease of carbon dioxide emissions intensity is 53.98% and 26.84%, respectively. The result shows that the relocation of Shougang group and the “coal to gas” engineering have a great influence on reducing carbon dioxide emissions, the contribution of structure adjustment is significant. The structure adjustment is still the major contributor on carbon dioxide emissions reduction in the future.

Research on the Contribution of Structure Adjustment on SO2 Emissions Reduction---Case Study Shijingshan District, Beijing

Having observed the relationship between structure adjustment with the change of SO2 emissions intensity, the author wants to ascertain the effectiveness of industry and energy structure adjustment on the reduction of SO2 emissions at Shijingshan district in Beijing, where the project of relocation of Shougang group and the “coal to gas” have been taken place at “11th five-year plan” period. Through the use of the long-mean Divasia Index Decomposition method (LMDI), the SO2 emissions intensity was decomposed into the contribution from four components: industry structure effect, industrial energy intensity effect, energy structure effect and emission coefficient effect. It was found that the contribution of industry and energy structure effect into the decrease of SO2 emissions intensity were 21.84% and 38.44%, respectively. The result showed that the relocation of Shougang group and the “coal to gas” engineering had a great influence on reducing SO2 emissions, the contribution of structure adjustment is significant. Furthermore, in basis of the reasonable forecast about energy consumption structure and SO2 emissions at “12th five-year plan” period at Shijingshan district, the predictive result shows that the contribution of industry and energy structure effect into the decrease of SO2 emissions intensity will be 6.52% and 58.24%, respectively. This indicates that the structure adjustment will be still the major contributor on SO2 emissions reduction in the future.

Development and application of roll contour configuration in temper rolling mill for hot rolled thin gauge steel strip

In order to improve the flatness of hot rolled thin gauge steel strip, a new type of roll contour configuration was developed for a four-high temper rolling mill based on the finite element method analysis. The roll contour configuration consists of a variable contact back-up roll contour and a positive crown work roll contour. Both can be described as sixth order polynomial functions. The variable contact back-up roll not only reduces the roll stack deflection and contact stress concentration between work and back-up rolls, but also increases the control capability of the bending force of the work roll. Positive crown work roll contour is utilised to compensate roll wear and in turn the length of temper rolling schedule can be prolonged. After this roll contour configuration was applied on the temper rolling mill of Qiangang Company of Shougang Group, the flatness of hot rolled thin gauge strip was improved by 10% and the working efficiency was also increased as the length of temper rolling schedule was increased.

Large firms and catch-up in a transitional economy: the case of Shougang Group in China

This study examines the possibility of catch-up of the Chinese steel industry, in particular the Shougang Group, with the leading global steel giants. Shougang is one of the four steel companies that have been selected by the Chinese government to constitute the core of the future Chinese steel industry. The contract system at Shougang, which operated from 1979 to 1995, unleashed an extraordinary entrepreneurial energy in the formerly traditional state-run steel plant. In the post-contract system, Shougang's range of decision-making independence in respect to the purchase of inputs, its production structure and product marketing has increased substantially compared to the contract system, when the government still controlled many of the key decisions. As a result of institutional constraint, the low value-added steel products dominate Shougang's portfolio. To challenge the established giants in the steel industry, Shougang has to divest the loss-making non-core businesses, slowly downsize employment in the core business, raise capital on the stock market and generates the resources for continued upgrading of its steel technology and diversifying its product portfolio.
