Digital Teaching Materials Narrative Text-The Fiction of Good Character-Oriented for Class VII MTS/SMP

The results of research on digital teaching materials for narrative texts - fiction oriented towards noble morals which are arranged in the form of digital flipbook teaching modules, contain linguistic elements, structure, content, inspirational characters and the four characteristics of the apostle (noble character). The implementation of digital teaching materials after going through limited trials and expanding as learning progressed, Indonesian language teachers and students stated that the short story texts containing the four characteristics of the apostle (noble morals) were very suitable and appropriate as teaching material in learning.

Who is Mobilized to Vote by Short Text Messages? Evidence from a Nationwide Field Experiment with Young Voters

AbstractUsing a large randomized controlled trial and rich individual-level data on eligible voters and their household members, we evaluate how get-out-the-vote (GOTV) appeals affect inequalities in voting, transmit from treated to untreated individuals within households, and how the transmission of voting decisions through family networks influences inequalities in voting. We find that receiving a text message reminder before the Finnish county elections in 2022 mobilized mainly low-propensity voters. As a result, the GOTV intervention reduced existing social inequalities in voting within the target group of young voters. We remarkably find that over 100% of the direct treatment effect spilled over to untreated household members. These spillovers reduced inequality in political participation among the older voters who were not part of the target group. Overall, our results exemplify how randomized controlled trials with a limited focus on the analysis of individuals in the treatment and control groups alone may lead to misestimating the compositional effects of get-out-the-vote interventions.

Gender differences in literacy in PIAAC: do assessment features matter?

BackgroundPrevious research based on large-scale studies consistently suggests that on average, male students tend to have lower literacy compared to their female students during secondary schooling. However, this gender gap in literacy seems to “disappear” during adulthood. Up until today, only a few studies investigated the role of assessment features in gender differences in literacy performance in adulthood. This study aims to understand the relationship between assessment features and gender differences in literacy skills.MethodsUsing the German 2012 PIAAC data (N = 4,512), we applied item-level analyses using linear probability models to examine gender differences in the probability of solving a literacy item correctly with six assessment features including (1) text format, (2) text topics, (3) text length, (4) cognitive strategies, (5) numerical content of the text/questions, and (6) gender typicality of content.ResultsWe found that men had a 13.4% higher probability of solving items with a noncontinuous text format correctly than women. Men also had a 9.4% higher probability of solving short text items correctly and a 4.6% higher probability of solving items with a medium/high numerical content in the question correctly than women. There were small to negligible gender differences in literacy performance in terms of text topics, cognitive strategies, and gender typicality of content.ConclusionsOur findings highlight the role of text format, text length, and numerical content in gender differences in literacy skills, suggesting that further refining these practices can enhance the fairness and accuracy of literacy assessments. Specifically, we advocate for ongoing research aimed at understanding and minimizing the potential bias introduced by these assessment features. Such efforts are not only crucial for developing instruments that accurately measure literacy skills, but they also yield insights that hold significant implications for educational researchers and practitioners dedicated to creating more equitable assessment environments.

The Afterlife of Energy Post-carbon and Feminist Post-work Politics

In the conclusion to her book The Birth of Energy: Fossil Fuels, Thermodynamics, and the Politics of Work, political scientist Cara Daggett considers “A Post-Work Energy Politics” in which she examines the historical coupling of energy and work—meaning human, waged work—in an invitation to disassociate their values and futures. The exponential power of fossil fuels animated the pipedream that powerful, inorganic slaves could substitute unfree human labor, ideas that have driven European imperialism. Fossil fuel systems did not lead, however, to a world beyond work. Rather, today’s “patriarchal slave states” continue to manage the project of putting the world to work through the maximization of productivity, and the subordination of racialized, immigrant, and gendered bodies—who would work for lower, or for no, wages. “The project of work,” Daggett argues, “is in tension with the project of life.” 1 And the rise of “work–life balance” is a mere tactic of governance in which the enemy is fatigue, exhaustion, and burn-out. She suggests, in turn, an alliance between post-carbon and feminist post-work politics and asks: what might it mean for energy politics to refer to the politics of ensuring public vitality? In order to advance a feminist revaluation of work, Daggett draws on Kathi Weeks’s The Problem with Work to outline a project that makes two utopian demands. One demand articulates a paradoxical relationship between the pragmatism of (present) demands and the speculative seeds of possibility; a second demand outlines a utopian form for such politics: partial, fragmented kin to the genre of the manifesto. Daggett concludes with an invitation that “a radical planet politics, if it seeks to contest ecomodernist claims, needs its own politics of pleasure.” 2 In an echo to Daggett’s invitation, the authors of this Educators’ Roundtable were invited to contribute a short text that picks up on the possibilities of a post-carbon, post-work politics.

Application of Chain Writing Method to Improve Short Story Writing Skills in Grade VIII Students of SMP Negeri 16 Cimahi

This research aims to reveal the improvement in learning outcomes of short story texts using picture story books in class VIII students at SMP Negeri 16 Cimahi. The problem of this research is related to the use of the chain writing method in learning short story texts in class VIII of SMP Negeri 16 Cimahi. The research method used in this research is PTK (Classroom Action Research) or CAR (Classroom Action Research). Classroom Action Research is carried out in four stages, namely planning, implementing actions, observing and reflecting. This research was carried out at FFF Middle School, data collection techniques were carried out through direct observation in the classroom while teaching and learning activities were taking place. The results of the research show that there is an increase in student learning outcomes in learning short story texts using the chain fifth method. This is shown by an increase in the number of 31 students who took part in cycle I and cycle II. Each cycle experiences an increase in the pretest and posttest results. The increase in cycle I reached 19.35% and the increase in cycle II reached 51.3%. This increase made the writer feel that it was sufficient so that he did not continue with cycle III. In this way, the author concludes that picture story book media can improve the activities and learning outcomes of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 16 Cimahi.

Clustering Integrated Fusion Model Based on the Maximum Matching Problem

The maximum-weight perfect matching inverse issue in graph theory and text clustering are the two primary topics of this study. We suggest a novel approach to text clustering that makes use of self-encoders and BERT embeddings for feature extraction in order to increase clustering accuracy. According to experimental results, our technique enhances the clustering results greatly and performs well on numerous short text datasets. In the context of graph theory, we examine the unit paradigm inverse issue of maximum-weight perfect matching with value constraints and provide a robust polynomial-time method for its solution. In addition to effectively solving the maximum-weight perfect matching inverse issue, our technique can also produce the best weight vector configuration scheme for real-world uses. In conclusion, our work has advanced the domains of text clustering and graph theory significantly, offering fresh approaches and theoretical underpinnings for future investigations.

A Comparative Study of Topic Modelling Approaches for User-generated Point of Interest Data

This study aims to enhance urban planning and management by harnessing the power of machine learning (ML) andbig data. We focus on Urban Functional Zones (UFZs), the fundamental units for human socio-economic activities. Ourmethodology involves compiling Point of Interest (POI) data from various sources for comprehensive analysis. Weemploy various topic modeling approaches such as Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), Latent Semantic Index (LSI),Hierarchical Dirichlet Process (HDP), and Top2Vec. Our principal results reveal significant differences in theperformance and coherence of these models on short text documents. Consequently, our major conclusion isidentifying the better-performing topic model for classifying UFZs from POI data. We also explore four textpreprocessing steps to optimize the performance of the topic models. This study contributes to the field by providinga nuanced understanding of UFZs, paving the way for future data-driven urban planning and management.

The dialect of the village of Gammalsvenskby (Rus. Старошведское; current Ukrainian name Змiïвка) belongs historically to the Swedish dialects of Estonia, which were spoken before World War II in the Noarootsi peninsula (Sw. Nuckö), in the villages of Kurkse (Korkis) and Vihterpalu (Vippal), and in the islands of the Moonsund archipelago: Osmussaar (Odensholm), Vormsi (Ormsö), Hiiumaa (Dagö), as well as on the islands Suur- and Väike-Pakri (Stora och Lilla Rågöarna), Ruhnu (Runö), Naissaar (Nargö). In 1782, around 1,000 Swedes from the island of Dagö, which at the time belonged to the Russian Empire, were resettled in the Kherson Governorate. There, on the bank of the Dnieper River, a village that later came to be called Gammalsvenskby was founded. The native language of its founders was the dialect of Dagö. Up to end of the 2010s, some of the elderly residents of the present-day village preserved a language variety that goes back to the dialect of Dagö; this is the dialect of Gammalsvenskby. The present-day state of this dialect has not been systematically described in linguistic literature. The only source of data for this article is fi eldwork with speakers of the dialect. The main objective is to present material recorded in the interviews in the most complete way possible and to describe the state of the vocabulary and infl ection in the dialect. The entries include the following information: type of infl ection; translation; phrases, sentences and short texts illustrating the usage (with initials of the informants). In many cases full paradigms are given as well. They include all phonetic and morphological forms that have occurred in the interviews.

Impact of mobile health technologies on human papillomavirus vaccination uptake among mothers of unvaccinated girls aged 9-14 years in Lagos, Nigeria (mHealth-HPVac): Study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

Despite the availability of effective vaccines, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake remains low in most resource-limited settings including Nigeria. Mobile health technology (mHealth) may empower patients to control their health, reduce inequalities, and improve the uptake of HPV vaccination. The "mHealth-HPVac" study will assess the effects of mHealth using short text messages on the uptake of HPV vaccination among mothers of unvaccinated girls aged 9-14 years and also determine the factors influencing the uptake of HPV vaccination among these mothers. This protocol highlights a randomised controlled trial involving women aged 25-65 years who will be enrolled on attendance for routine care at the General Outpatient clinics of Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria between July and December 2024. At baseline, n=224 women will be randomised to either a short text message or usual care (control) arm. The primary outcome is vaccination of the participant's school-age girl(s) at any time during the 6 months of follow-up. The associations between any two groups of continuous variables will be tested using the independent sample t-test (normal distribution) or the Mann-Whitney U test (skewed data) and that of two groups of categorical variables with Chi-square (X2) or Fisher's exact test where appropriate. Using the multivariable binary logistic regression model, we will examine the effects of all relevant sociodemographic and clinical variables on HPV vaccination uptake among mothers of unvaccinated but vaccine-eligible school-age girls. Statistical significance will be defined as A P<0.05. The mHealth-Cervix study will evaluate the impact of mobile technologies on HPV vaccination uptake among mothers of unvaccinated but vaccine-eligible school-age girls in Lagos, Nigeria as a way of contributing to the reduction in the wide disparities in cervical cancer incidence through primary prevention facilitated using health promotion to improve HPV vaccination uptake. On the use of SMS messages in teaching foreign language communication, with a focus on German as a Foreign Language

Acquiring proficiency in conveying information through short text messages is clearly connected with the changes that have taken places in the world around us. It should, therefore, find its reflection in the teaching of foreign languages, especially in language studies. It is worth noting that SMS messages, as a means of communication, can be an interesting and useful topic for students who can no longer (or perhaps do not want to) function without a smartphone. The considerations presented here are rooted in educational practice and provide a description of a project aimed at developing proficiency in understanding and creating text messages in practical German language classes. Features included writing with correct spelling, the style of SMS messages, the choice of linguistic elements and the use of abbreviations, both in German and English. The paper also includes examples of exercises and discusses the impact of SMS messages on the progress and quality of German language classes. The project presented aims to demonstrate the relevance of introducing such texts and their didactic value in foreign language teaching. It offers sample solutions that can be employed in the process of developing writing skills in a foreign language and suggests how SMS messages can be used as a communication tool in foreign language classes to broaden and reinforce vocabulary related to mobile phones.

Conducting a diabetes mellitus prevention trial in women with GDM in Pakistan: a feasibility study

BackgroundWomen with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) than women without GDM. Despite this elevated risk, few trials on the prevention of T2DM among South Asian women with GDM have been reported. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the feasibility of conducting a diabetes prevention program on women with a history of GDM to inform the development of a contextually relevant definitive trial.MethodsUsing a randomized controlled trial, women with GDM (n = 180) who delivered at the study hospitals (one public and one private teaching hospital, Karachi) with fasting blood glucose levels < 120 mg/dl at 6 weeks postpartum were randomized to the intervention (n = 88) or control arms (n = 92). Women in the intervention group received individualized home-based educational sessions from trained community health workers at 0, 1, 3, 6, and 9 months. In addition, they received short text messages, prerecorded messages, and printed educational material (calendars and pamphlets) for reinforcement. The intervention was centered on equipping women with knowledge, skills, and confidence to eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and perform regular physical activity based on walking and household chores to reduce weight (up to 5% of their initial body weight). Women in the control arm received standard care. The feasibility outcomes of the study included screening, recruitment, and retention rates and in-depth interviews at 6 months post-intervention to explore women’s experiences with the intervention. Descriptive analysis and thematic analysis were performed.ResultsOf the 324 women screened during the antenatal care visits and after delivery, 255 (78.7%) were contactable 6 weeks postpartum, and 180 (70.6%) were eligible and randomized to intervention (n = 88) and control (n = 92) groups. Loss to follow-up in the intervention and control arms was 22.7% (n = 20/88) and 18.5% (n = 17/92), respectively. Women expressed satisfaction with home-based counseling and follow-up visits, text message reminders, and printed material in the form of a calendar through our qualitative interviews.ConclusionsHome-based lifestyle modification intervention augmented with text messages and printed material is feasible. However, to evaluate the intervention’s effectiveness, a larger trial is warranted to assess its long-term impact on diabetes prevention.Trial registrationISRCTN, ISRCTN11387113. What type of social media posts about sustainable construction is better for audience engagement?

In an effort to move to a sustainable society, new concepts and findings related to sustainable construction are being developed. With ambition to transfer newly developed knowledge to society, various communication paths are being used. In this study we investigated what kind of messages shared on institutional social media channels (Facebook, Twitter (now renamed to X), and LinkedIn) about sustainable construction create more audience engagement. The study consisted of two phases of weekly social media posts. In each phase, 15 posts were published on the same day and time, while engagement was monitored. Three different types of posts were created, that were sequential cycling each week. Type 1 was written informative content related to research activities; type 2 was image content related to the research activities and equipment, with a short text caption of the image; and type 3 was image content with people - scientists working on research activities with a short text caption of the image. Poisson regression analysis revealed that type 3 posts result in the most audience engagement on LinkedIn, suggesting that using images of people in combination with short text captions is the most effective way to engage social media audiences. These findings can help organizations to use social media to promote sustainable construction and other sustainability-related research. The engagement was lower on Facebook and Twitter (X). As the science is aiming to be closer to the society, these findings deliver an important insight of science communication through the social media. Although the study delivered several lessons learnt related to science communication through social media studies, it provides an important bases for further studies. Conclusions can support research organizations in improving their science communication.

Pipelining Semantic Expansion and Noise Filtering for Sentiment Analysis of Short Documents – CluSent Method

The challenge of constructing effective sentiment models is exacerbated by a lack of sufficient information, particularly in short texts. Enhancing short texts with semantic relationships becomes crucial for capturing affective nuances and improving model efficacy, albeit with the potential drawback of introducing noise. This article introduces a novel approach, CluSent, designed for customized dataset-oriented sentiment analysis. CluSent capitalizes on the CluWords concept, a proposed powerful representation of semantically related words. To address the issues of information scarcity and noise, CluSent addresses these challenges: (i) leveraging the semantic neighborhood of pre-trained word embedding representations to enrich document representation and (ii) introducing dataset-specific filtering and weighting mechanisms to manage noise. These mechanisms utilize part-of-speech and polarity/intensity information from lexicons. In an extensive experimental evaluation spanning 19 datasets and five state-of-the-art baselines, including modern transformer architectures, CluSent emerged as the superior method in the majority of scenarios (28 out of 38 possibilities), demonstrating noteworthy performance gains of up to 14% over the strongest baselines.

Chromatin remodelers are molecular motors that act on nucleosomes: they move them along DNA or (dis-)assemble them. Despite the fact that they perform essential regulatory functions in cells-their deregulation can contribute to the development of cancers and lead to cell death-chromatin remodelers have only received meager attention in the biophysics community so far. In this short text, we attempt to present the key features of this interesting class of enzymes obtained with different experimental and theoretical methods, thereby providing a concise introduction for biophysicists to further stimulate interest in their properties.

What frequencies tell us of the foodstuffs used as source domain to conceptualize attractive people in Peninsular Spanish

Abstract This paper offers a study of the foodstuffs used by speakers of Peninsular Spanish when referring to an attractive individual. Two online forums were scanned to automatically search for linguistic realizations of the metaphor an attractive individual is appetizing food. A corpus of 860 short texts was compiled, which contains the food terms used in context. The frequency distribution of the type of food and the variable of gender was measured. Results indicate a preference to exploit the metaphor through salty food products and that the foodstuffs used are highly dependent on the variable of gender. Contrary to previous studies (e.g., Caitlin Hines 2000; Irene López Rodríguez 2007, 2008), the frequency of sweets and desserts is not higher with female referents. The findings do not agree with prior assumptions about the foodstuffs used in Peninsular Spanish to conceptualize attractive people and the cultural stereotypes associated with them.
