This research generally aims to analyze the skills of students in writing short stories. The method used in this reseairch is descriptive quailitaitive method. The object of this reseairch is students' essaiys which aire aissessed from the aispects of spelling usaige aind writing, word writing/diction, cohesiveness between pairaigraiphs aind overaill content. The source of this daitai is graide VI students of Kairtikai XVII-1 Pontiainaik Kotai Elementairy School, totailing 24 students. This reseairch used interview techniques, tests aind documentaition. The results of this study indicaite thait the aiveraige skill of students in writing short stories is 58.58 in the caitegory of less. This cain be seen in terms of the percentaige of students getting scores in the very good caitegory there aire 3 students or 0.12%, the good caitegory is 2 students or 0.08%, the sufficient caitegory is 7 students 0.29%, the less caitegory is 10 students or 0.41% aind for the very poor caitegory there aire 2 students or 0.08%. In writing short story writing skills there aire severail aispects including the use aind writing of spelling (use of caipitail letters, punctuaition mairks, writing words thait aire still laicking letters, hyphenaition), integraition between pairaigraiphs aind overaill content. Thus it cain be concluded thait the skills of writing short stories in claiss VI students aire in the lower caitegory becaiuse there aire still some students who aire still inaiccuraite in writing short stories.

Translation of a story into Chilean Sign Language: productions by deaf co-teachers

IntroductionThe incorporation of narratives in Chilean Sign Language enriches classroom practices, preserving and transmitting Deaf culture. However, that within the Chilean educational context, the narratives used for instructing Deaf students are translations from written Spanish. This study aims to describe and analyze the narrative structure and the use of Highly Iconic Structures in these translations conducted by Deaf co-teachers into Chilean Sign Language.MethodThe research adopts a qualitative approach and a descriptive case study design, involving two deaf teachers from an Inclusive Education Program in a school. The data analyzed focus on the video-recorded LSCh translations of the short story “The Greedy Squirrel”. Manual annotations were made on the corpus gloss transcription to first segment by narrative structure for description and then to identify the transfer operations.ResultsThe co-teachers make variations to the narrative structure of the translated text and incorporate specific visual-gestural elements such as the change of narrator to first person; the 45% of the translation is composed of transfer operations.DiscussionThese findings suggest that the variations in structure and the new visual-gestural information provided by the co-teachers reflect their understanding and use of sign language narrative norms for translation. The use of transfer operations enhances the storytelling experience, although it cannot be conclusively stated how and why teachers decide to use them in translation. The results are limited, as they require comparison with other corpora on translations from written Spanish to LSCh and software-assisted analysis to standardize data, which implies further research on the topic. For now, it is essential that the time allocated to the preparation of educational materials in LSCh be more extensive and better planned.

Ethnomulticultural dimensions in Osing literature of Banyuwangi: An analysis of Samar Wulu and Lintrik

This study explores the ethnomulticultural content in Osing literature, highlighting how it expresses the Osing ethnic identity through its unique characteristics and traditions. Through a qualitative-interpretative-anthropological method, this study examined data in the form of words, sentences, and paragraphs extracted from two short stories. The short stories under investigation included a short story entitled Samar Wulu (Dusk; the time when the Sun is about to set) by Andika Fitriyah and Lintrik (Love Spell) by Dyah Agustin Wulandari. In this literary anthropology research, the data in the two short stories were analyzed based on their ethnomulticultural content. The ethnomulticultural analysis explored cultural phenomena and traditions, which included worldviews and local wisdom. The researchers conducted a three-stage reading process of the short stories for the representation of Osing cultural content: receptive reading, repeated readings to gather data on ethno-multicultural elements, and interpretive reading using a literary anthropology approach to analyze the worldview and local wisdom of the Osing community. The results revealed the significant role rituals play in expressing Osing cultural identity. Rituals like Kebo-Keboan, for overcoming plagues, and Lintrik, for warding off misfortune, are deeply rooted in Osing society and reflect themes of magic and tragedy. These rituals embody the Osing worldview, where harmony between the micro and macro cosmos is essential. The presence of magical realism in these rituals affirms the local identity of the Osing people in postcolonial society. The findings suggest potential avenues for integrating cultural insights into pedagogical approaches at the junior high school level.

“I’ve Read You Right—I’m With You Now”: Aesthetic Reading in Virginia Woolf's Metafictional Short Stories

“I’ve read you right—I’m with you now”: Aesthetic Reading in Virginia Woolf’s Metafictional Short Stories. Despite critical interest in Virginia Woolf’s intense preoccupation with the imaginative process at the root of literary creation, little attention has been paid to the manner in which, through metafiction, the writer turns her short stories into reflections upon the nature of reading. In works such as “An Unwritten Novel” (1921) and “The Lady in the Looking-Glass. A Reflection” (1926), the boundaries between literature and criticism, between fiction and reality, take center stage and it is precisely this point of convergence that metafictional works take as subject matter. Thus, Virginia Woolf’s ‘character-reading’ makes its way into her stories and the author’s critical stance upon the act of reading, revealed primarily in her essays, is now transmitted thematically through characters who appropriate the readers’ active construction of meaning while living in the same textual world inhabited by the fictitious characters they ardently wish to interpret. Through the advancement of a specific type of reading: active, emotive, empathetic, fluid, inquisitive, intimate and indeterminate, yet always close to the text it is engaged with, Virginia Woolf may be said to prefigure the type of transactional reader-response criticism underpinned by Louise Rosenblatt, whose insistence upon aesthetic reading calls for a two-way transmission of meaning that is simultaneously constitutive of the literary work and of the reader’s self. EKSPLORASI KEMAMPUAN PESERTA DIDIK SEKOLAH DASAR DALAM MENULIS CERITA PENDEK MENGGUNAKAN MODEL PEMBELAJARAN PROBLEM-CENTERED LEARNING (PCL)

This study aims to identify students' ability in writing short stories after participating in learning with the Problem-Centered Learning (PCL) model, as well as to analyze the difficulties they face and the obstacles faced by teachers in implementing PCL. This study applied a qualitative case study approach at SDN 112/IX Muhajirin, involving 17 students of fourth grade and one teacher. Data were collected through observation, assessment of student writing content, and interviews, then analyzed descriptively and thematically. The results showed that PCL had a positive impact on improving students' ability in writing short stories by developing clear themes, deep characters, and effective storylines. However, students faced difficulties in developing the author's background and adapting the language style. Teachers also faced challenges in technical readiness and institutional support. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that PCL is effective in improving elementary school students' short story writing skills despite facing implementation challenges. The need of additional support for the development of teaching strategies and in-depth training for teachers to overcome these difficulties is emphasized.

The subversive semantic power of the revenant or reanimated corpse in Victorian literature serves as a crucial indicator of the era’s preoccupation with the body as a cultural domain. Deeply entwined with the uneasy relationship between the advancement of anatomical science and criminality, the body is marked as the site of fraught boundaries imbued with social order and its attendant anxieties. This paper explores the narrative strategies of Stevenson’s short story “The Body Snatcher” (1884) where resurrectionist motifs resist the enforcement of the condition of anonymity that was entailed by anatomical dissection and signal the impossibility of closure through the trope of return of the repressed sub specie of the dissected cadaver. This dual ‘resistance’ culminates in the symbolism of the revenant corpse’s movement, abandoned in its progress towards the future. Stevenson’s story reveals a hermeneutic complexity that intertwines the themes of contamination, ethical collusion, commodification of the dead body through the entanglement of medical practice and narrative opacity. This offers further insights into the Victorian resurrectionist imagination, in the light of that ‘aura’ of the corpse which the regulation of the 1834 New Poor Amendment Act failed to dispel.

The Cruciality of Self-Determination on James Baldwin’s Bruce and the Spider

This paper exposes the crucial points of self-determination in the flash fiction of James Baldwin entitled Bruce and the Spider. The short story is a narrative that describes a brief moment in the life of the main character, Bruce, a Scottish king who was defeated many times by the King of England. When he saw a spider weaving its web in the corner of his retreat, this moment became symbolic of Bruce's emotional journey and self-determination within himself and the kingdom of Scotland. In this flash fiction, it is witnessed how Bruce struggles amid his repeated failures. Using qualitative research method, this article illustrates small changes in perception and courage and asks questions about how simple moments can have a profound impact on a person's life. This writing is supported by Self-Determination Theory as conceptualized by Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci. Through explorative approach, the analysis includes how self-determination accompanies the reflections of the meanings behind simple actions and the importance of facing failure. In conclusion, it is self-determination through self-confidence, self-understanding, and self-reliance that directs King Bruce to defeat his despair, get back up, and beat back the English soldiers.

Peace and Conflict in Two Friends: A Naturalistic Short Story

As a mover and shaker man of letters, the French short story writer Guy de Maupassant penned hundreds of groundbreaking stories, yet sundry of them are still eclipsed owing to the rarity of reviews. Two Friends (1882), one of his eloquent works, is a pertinent case worth reading and analyzing. As a corollary, this article comes to terms with Two Friends to uncover the story’s narrative structure, point of view, setting dimensions, historical context, style, and symbolism to cognize readers about the significance of this piece of work that comes to grips with two dialectical phenomena which are peace and brutality. This juxtapositional datum in human nature echoes how realistic literature in the 19th century represented societies by shedding light on divergent issues in Two Friends and conversing about the impulse that thrusts Guy de Maupassant to tell about the faith of two commoners living in Paris. This investigation indulges realism in Maupassant’s work through the projection of commoner characters entangled with the dire reality of armed conflicts. Besides, naturalism discloses the reasonable forces of the environment and innate heredity that navigate the characters' actions. This will inform us about how war sometimes has the repercussions of foolish decisions or human greed, out of which innocent human beings are the overt victims who pay a heavy price.

Effectiveness of the Basic Education Remediation Kits on Improving the Reading Skills of Novice Readers

Remediation is crucial for strengthening students’ reading abilities, particularly for novice readers aged six to seven. Basic education practitioners must design intervention approaches that address reading and comprehension educational gaps. In response, this paper analyzed the effectiveness of the Basic Education Remediation Kits (BERKs) in improving the reading skills of struggling novice readers by revealing their reading skill level and revealing significant differences in the pre-test and post-test mean scores. The study employed a Quasi-experimental methodology with One-Group Pre-Test Post-Test Design and used purposive sampling as the sampling technique. The pre-/post-test consisted of two parts: 1) letter sounds and syllables and 2) short story with comprehension questions. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired samples t-tests to determine significant differences between the assessment results and the effectiveness of the remediation kit used. Findings revealed an increase in the students’ mean scores following kit implementation. The paired samples t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference between pretest and post-test scores, further affirming its effectiveness. The kit assists novice readers, particularly those in the early stages of literacy; nevertheless, its effectiveness varies according to reading level; thus, the use of a single teaching strategy may not be equally beneficial to all students. The long-term impact of the remediation kit may be evaluated considering aspects such as intervention duration, teaching pedagogy, and demographics. A group of participants with the same reading level may be used to further assess its efficacy.

The Insiders and the Outsiders in Short Fiction: Is the Behaviour of Women and Men Determined by Living in and Living Out?

The study discusses traditional gender roles and the resulting behavior in the selected works of short fiction. These gender roles dictate that men must work outside to provide for their families while women are compelled to remain inside the house, taking care of children and doing household chores. These roles are accompanied by different stereotypical traits: Men are thought to have positive traits like rationality and bravery while women are said to possess negative traits like sentimentality and cowardice. As writers are also part of society, so we can expect to see the same gendered thinking in their creation. This research takes up five short stories and looks at the behavioral traits of male and female characters and the connection of these traits with the fact that males are outsiders and females are insiders.

The Implementation of Make a Match Method to Improve Students’ Vocabulary Mastery of Eighth Grade at MTsN Soppeng

The objective of the research was to find out whether the use of Make a Match method can improve vocabulary mastery in terms of meaning, use, and form of the eighth grade students of MTsN Soppeng. The researcher applied pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population of the research was the eighth grade students of MTsN Soppeng. The total sample of the research was 27 students. It was taken by using cluster random sampling. The data were collected through vocabulary test 9pre-test and post-test). To find out whether or not the implementation of reading short stories improves the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grade students of MTsN Soppeng, the researcher used t-test analysis. The result of the data analysis showed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. It can be seen from the result of statistical calculation where it showed that the value of sig (2-tailed) was smaller than the value a 0.05 (0.00<0.05). based on the finding and discussion of the study, the researcher concludes that use make a match method is able to improve vocabulary mastery of eighth grade students of MTsN Soppeng.

ANALISIS KEBUTUHAN E-MODUL MULTIMODAL BERKEARIFAN LOKAL MADURA UNTUK MENULIS TEKS CERPEN

Multimodal e-modules develop students' abilities in understanding a variety of multimodal texts which encourage intellectual quality and broader learning experiences. Multimodal-based learning can be integrated with local wisdom as an effort to preserve cultural values. The aim of the research is to determine the need for a multimodal e-module based on Madurese local wisdom for writing short story texts. This research is aqualitative descriptive research oriented towards the development of a product. The data collection technique was carried out through a questionnaire distributed to Indonesian language teachers and also to students at two high schools in Pamekasan Regency via Google Forms. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and the percentage of the total number of answers given was divided by the total number of respondents multiplied by 100%. The results of this research show that learning to write short story texts has never been carried out using e-modules, the use of multimodal teaching materials has never been done, and the short story texts presented in learning have not been based on local Madurese wisdom. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the development of a multimodal e-module based on local Madurese wisdom is really needed by students so it needs to be developed to support the short story writing skills of class XI high school students.

Response to A Story During Cognitive Screening – Expression of the Inherent Awareness of Survival of Fellow Human Beings

Abstract Background The comprehensive assessment of cognition should include the immediate recall of information as well as that provided after delay. The phenomenon of patients providing intrusions is well recognised in the realm of cognitive assessment. Certain intrusions have been found to recur across patient performances. Methods Retrospective analysis was undertaken of patients (n=9) screened for dementia using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (Pearson) between 2022 and 2024. Data was sourced from MDT notes cataloguing the results of memory tests undertaken whereby the patient had added information regarding loss of life for persons involved in a fire. Data were elicited regarding List Learning (LL) and Recall; Story Memory and Recall, Figure Copy and Recall. The final sheet was used to elicit scores for each category. Results Median age was 76 (range 61-84 years). Male to female was 4:5. Patients were found to make a comment regarding loss of life e.g. ‘nobody was hurt’ where the information did not exist in the original story script. This occurred equally at Story Memory Stage and Story Recall Stage (77.7%). When compared with list and figure copy elements- only one patient also had errors in both LL and memory figure. Six patients had intrusion errors across other elements. Where the story was accentuated in both immediate and delayed recall stages- pts had intrusions in list learning (n=2, 22%) list recall (n=3, 33.3%) but no intrusions on Figure Copy- immediate or delayed. Conclusion Although this cohort of patients was small- each one of them included the status of life lost when given a short story to recite and then recall. These comments occurred both on immediate episodic recall and after delay and were not always associated with a replicated intrusion phenomena across other elements. This inherent interest in the survival of other humans is worth highlighting.

Todas las aguas el agua: The Water Within “La casa inundada” by Felisberto Hernández

“La casa inundada” (1960) presents a peculiar, meditative, and uncanny short story by the Uruguayan writer, Felisberto Hernández. The story is narrated via the memories (and the male fantasies) of a writer who once took on the odd job of rowing a large woman around the inside of her flooded house day after day in a small boat. Throughout most of the story, the woman, Margarita, remains a mystery to the narrator and to the reader, as do the reasons for her taciturn disposition and for having purposefully flooded her own house. In this article, rather than rescue what is unknown so that the mysterious woman’s apparent ‘“dirty little secret’” can be recovered from the swell, I explore the ontological, epistemological, and affective attributes of water itself. In so doing, I build on Felisberto’s expanding bibliography, calling particular attention to his understudied motifs of “pereza” and “deslizarse.” Unlike most critics of Felisberto, I utilize concepts that both come from and critique psychoanalysis; additionally, the underappreciated theories of Gaston Bachelard regarding water as a “true mother substance” serve as a vital source of theoretical interpretation. In the course of Felisberto’s story, the narrator comes to believe that, for the motherly—and tantalizing—character of Margarita, “lo que más quería [ella], era comprender el agua.” Ultimately, as I demonstrate, “La casa inundada,” similarly helps readers to better think, understand, and sense water and its myriad ways.

Legitimating language and emotional tone in antenarratives: A cultural entrepreneurship perspective

The concept of storytelling has gained prominence within entrepreneurship, especially as the key property underpinning the process of cultural entrepreneurship. Although it is conventionally assumed that entrepreneurial communications take the form of fully formed stories (e.g., business pitches), by relaxing this assumption, we are able to advance cultural entrepreneurship and test its boundaries. We theorize that when new ventures choose specific legitimating language to share very short story fragments (i.e., antenarratives) online, the audience is compelled to engage. Furthermore, we suggest that the effect of legitimating language on stakeholder engagement will vary based on the emotional tone conveyed in these antenarratives. To test our theory, we construct dictionaries to measure three types of legitimating language (pragmatic, moral, cognitive) and empirically analyze a large, unique dataset of new ventures from X. Results offer support for our theorizing.

Structural and Coherence Analysis Towards The Renunciation

While many researchers have paid attention to Rabindranath Tagore's poems, few have analyzed his short stories, still less on a specific story, like The Renunciation. The fiction critiques the caste system of Hinduism and portrays a unique female character. This paper proposes that structural and coherence analysis can assist in a better appreciation of the story. The disruption of the timeline emphasizes the importance of a series of events occurred in the past. Coherence relations within them are established and analyzed so that the caste system's role as the origin of perpetuating tragedy among Hindus is explicitly revealed. The blank in the timeline along with the nightingale which appears throughout the novel indicates the plight of women in Hindu society. Analyses in this paper provide argumentation for views proposed in previous studies, namely Tagore's firm stance against the caste system and his empathy for suffering women, from a new angle. It also demonstrates the feasibility of linguistic theories appliance to the field of literary criticism.

Food, Migration, and Place Consciousness in Chika Unigwe’s Better Never than Late

ABSTRACT In this study, we examine the multidimensional facets of food, migration, and individuals’ sense of otherness and dis/connection to place as represented in selected fictional works from Nigeria. The article pays attention in particular to Chika Unigwe’s short story collection, Better Never than Late (2019), which explores the experiences of a group of Nigerian migrants and Europeans living in Belgium through connected stories. Drawing on the theoretical insights of postcolonialism, negofeminism, and affect theory, we explore the connectedness of African migrant personae and their sensitiveness to food and place in the fictive universe of this short story collection. We disentangle the manner in which food and the occasions of meals creatively catalyze different forms of migrant and diasporic consciousness and embodied experiences, including gender consciousness, personhood, and sociocultural angst. The article traces the representation of food in different but connected narratives of estrangement within the African diaspora. The representation of food in fictional works allows for reflection on the psychosocial and existential realities of Africans in a fluid late modern world.
