The thoracic surgery service at Brooke Army Medical Center performs about 150 coronary artery bypass procedures a year. The hematology service routinely screens these patients with preoperative platelet count, prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time, fibrinogen, bleeding time, and, until recently, platelet function testing. The basis for this screening has been our interest in the reasons for postoperative bleeding in these patients, stimulated in part by the paper of Bick which was not mentioned...Reference1.
